The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.
After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

Great! Food and service so good!
And FORMOSA CAFE has all that history!
The Formosa Cafe is one of our favorite places to eat in Los Angeles. It has a history. The staff are always great. The service is always great. Myself and my Girlfriend got engaged there last night and it was beautiful. The staff were so gracious and celebrating with us. Our servers name was Matt and he was wonderful at making it special for us.
We went here for our wedding anniversary and asked for a nice and quiet table. They sat us next to the kitchen doors right next to the DJ Booth. We asked to move and they sat us one booth away. The food was very salty, and I like salt. When the server checked in with us, I said the food was really salty and she just stared at me then asked if I wanted more water. The drinks were like a glass over filled with ice and sour koolaide. Not good drinks, and we like drinks! So if you go, have beer, wine or something simple like a gin & tonic. Skip the fancy drink menu. The resturant is gorgeous with no expense or detail spared, but the DJ playing The Who and Bell Biv Devou serioulsy took the whole vibe out of character, which was a disappointment. It's a beautiful landmark establishment and redone so nicely. It's a shame our special evening was overall a let down.
The cocktails and food were all really delicious. Was an enjoyable meal with friends in a fun environment.
We went to the Formosa after a Hamilton show for dinner. Cocktails were terrific and the food was amazing! It had been a long time since I had been there and the ambience was just as we hoped for. Can’t wait to return!
I loved this place. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and we both really enjoyed it. It’s a very romantic vibe with low level lighting. I loved sitting in the caboose with the blinds open—it felt like we were on vacation. The walnut shrimp and the pork belly pasta dish was incredible. I would definitely go here again. Oh—get the Mai Tai too!
Great vibes. Wonderful staff. Great food. Awesome GM. I will definitely be a regular here. Elise makes the best drinks. Super friendly. Matt, the GM, is a true gem. Made my friends and me feel very at home and welcome.
The food is great, the interior design is great, the servers are all really nice. Our food and drink orders took a bit long, but they're clearly understaffed (really common issue right now, not just them). Every employee was hustling and still being considerate and patient with their customers even though they needed like 3 more people there. They're definitely handling the industry staffing problem better than other places. Also, our food and drink orders, although a bit slow, still came out perfect, hot and delicious. Love this place.
We loved the decor and felt safe because the staff checked our proof of vaccination and the upstairs had plenty of fresh air. We'll be back soon!
Formosa cafe is a real gem. The ambiance takes you back and the food was extraordinary. The orange chicken, soup dumplings , and pork belly noodles were amazing. The only thing better than the food and ambiance was the service.
Mediocre experience. Our server let us order rice without telling us it came with our entrees. My martini was served in a small champagne coupe glass and not a martini glass. I specifically asked if the Hunan Chicken was breast and was told it was. It was not, it was a thigh and a leg. My husband enjoyed it, I ate the cucumbers and rice that came with it. The honey walnut shrimp was very good. The dim sum starter was good, too. Points for being creative with the food.
Excellent food, lovely ambiance and environment, and great service. Can't wait to go back.
If Jordan is there, please ask to be served by him!! He is amazing, attentive and overall a really nice person. We love Formosa!!
Loved seeing the remodel it was beautiful! The food is good, I will definitely be back.
This place is very unique and inviting.. the food was ok, drinks.. hmmm, well, better quality liquor would’ve helped. The service however, was OUTSTANDING…
Loved the cocktails!! Nice atmosphere. Food was good!
Great cocktails, yummy food, fantastic atmosphere.
Fabulous evening of after dinner cocktails with friends to celebrate my birthday.
The renovation is outstanding. You feel like you're back in the 1930s and 40s yet in the moment because everything is fresh and new with the old being polished to a remarkable shine. Excellent food, terrific vibe with very good service and fun innovative cocktails
Food here is always top notch, and so are the drinks. Crowd watching is the best side dish here: and it's free!
Average to substandard food. Brought food out sequentially instead of all at one time or in groups so no one could eat together. It was not as good as several low-end Chinese delivery places in our neighborhood which are half the price. Very disappointing experience.
It is such a lovely atmosphere and an iconic Los Angeles restaurant. The portions are much larger than I remembered or expected and so we took a LOT of food home. The food was very good. The staff were extremely attentive, helpful and friendly and accommodated our every request and need. I highly recommend The Formosa to anyone who wants a lovely evening. A real treat!
I’m so glad the Formosa reopened! This is a real, old-Hollywood place. I love the decor and the atmosphere. Drinks and food are good, too!
Great that they are requiring vaccinations so everyone is safe! Top notch drinks and perfectly cooked food! The server was fun and very attentive. Formosa never disappoints :)
Great atmosphere, cocktails amazing
Very enjoyable. Great atmosphere. Food was excellent especially the walnut shrimp and sirloin with brocolini. Had 5 dishes for 3 people, limited menu but all was delicious just the right amount of food. Got street parking. Very nice evening. Very pleased must be vaccinated to enter
Food is great and the atmosphere is fun. Love the old Hollywood vibe.
Great throw back with updated food and wonderful cocktails.
I esp. liked make its mescal.
Our whole party wants to come back soon!
Great food and they brought a DJ!
Fantastic service, ambiance and food
Extremely delicious food, very good drinks, and the booths are very cozy.
Loved the building & ambience & connection to film history. The vibe was chill and fun, and the food was fantastic.
Love the old Hollywood vibe. We ate upstairs outside and felt like we were swept away from the outside world. Most of the dishes we ordered had quite a little kick but overall the food was excellent. Can’t wait to come back.
Food comes out way too fast. Need to course it out.
Walnut shrimp was okay. Gua Bao shrimp were very spicy and awesome. Chow mien was decent. Drinks are all amazing. Place is nostalgic to say the least. Overall great place
The service was great, food was great. Overall experience was exactly what we wanted.
They have done a wonderful job of remodeling Formosa, the food was good, and very importantly, they require vaccinations. I only want to go to restaurants now that do require vaccinations.
Really nice ambience, very friendly staff, food was pretty tasty
Formosa is a great place to take your loved one on a date. I appreciated the food servings - they were just the right amount, not too much but not too little . Please be patient when waiting for your food, go in for the dine in experience and order a drink while you wait - trust me the food will come out hot and fresh. Formosa is not a fast food restaurant, it’s a sit down dinner restaurant. Also, if you want to get the waiters attention make eye contact-they will quickly come to you. No need to try to flag down the waiter.
