Foreign Cinema Ratings and Reviews
My friends and I have been going to Foreign Cinema for years for casual dinners and special events. We love the lively atmosphere and the cocktails and food are always amazing which was no exception this time. Surprisingly the service was awful. We waited 10 minutes before the server approached the table. He was clearly in the weeds given his short exchange and the additional 15 minutes it took for him to cork the champagne we brought. By the time we ordered appetizers we had already been seated 30 minutes. When the dining room quieted down we assumed the server would approach the table to check on us but we found ourselves having to ask someone to send the server to the table. I'm chalking this up to an off night but if it happens again we will likely take our business elsewhere. We hope that doesn't happen.
I was celebrating a special occasion and it was good but not I was expecting,I felt like the server was trying too hard, because every time he came to the table he would congratulate me. The food was not the greatest, I had the Curry Fried Chicken... it was okay. It was quite pricey for the quality of the food but I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. I will definitely come back but order more cautiously.
Food was very good !
Service was just ok (it took more than 8 minutes for the waitress to approach our table just tog I've us the menus and ask if we wanted something to drink).
Prices pretty steep.
Lively yet cozy environment.
Had a great meal here! Every dish we ate was spot on, beautifully prepared, seasoned and perfectly balanced. Had a late 10pm table but didn't feel rushed and food was fast and service excellent. Movie in the backdrop was also very cool. Would highly recommend
Went here with my boyfriend for my birthday dinner, and it was definitely very romantic. The ambiance was great, the lights outside were so pretty, and the heaters made it okay to dine outside in January in SF. The drinks were great! Loved the selection offered. The food was so delicious, and definitely lived up to the hype. We'll definitely be back again!
Our family of 4 enjoyed a Friday night post-new year dinner in the main dining room (too chilly to watch a movie that night). We started off with cocktails and warm bread. Then we proceeded direct into the Charcuterie platter, Hamachi crudo, and Grilled Monterey calamari. For dinner, the 4 of us shared the following entrees...Five spiced duck breast, Kobe flat iron steak, and Seared sea scallops. The food was great and fulfilling!
Although the food was excellent, the wait service was spotty and infrequent. Water glasses were not attended to and a request for bread went unfulfilled. If it weren’t for the stellar bus boy, the waiter’s behavior could not be tolerated.
From the stone faced hostesses to the rushed waiter and bus staff, our experience was really not very impressive. The food was good enough, but really, given the choice of SF's amazing restaurants with energetic, welcoming, enthusiastic staffs, why would anyone go to Foreign Cinema anymore?
I love this restaurant, it’s a beautiful space however 3 things didn’t work...
1. We sat in the mezzanine- this is a concrete dead spot and has no ambiance. Don’t sit there.
2. Worst of all the food simply wasn’t good. This had not been my experience in the past (~2 yrs ago). We had several starters that were not particularly tasty - cod, melted cheese and olives. For mains we had duck which was tough and lacked flavor (the sides were good), the risotto was bland. It was all just meh!
3. Lastly we moved to the bar to try soak up some of the ambiance downstairs and there was a smell at the bar that was simply atrocious. It’s smelt like fungus ?? We all agreed it was just bad.
So in summary I do love this place but the food was bad and for a restaurant that’s not good.
We’ve been coming to Foreign Cinema regularly for the past 20 years — living just up the hill in Dolores Heights which makes for a lovely walk. We were seated this time (without choice) in their “gallery overflow space” which had absolutely no ambience at all. Service was okay, food remains consistently solid but the coldness and discomfort of the room made this a definitely subpar experience. Would not consider ever coming back if this had been my only experience dining with this restaurant.
I went here for my anniversary and the food, staff, and ambiance were out of this world. Great way to set off the night! They were kind enough to recognize our anniversary and made it feel very special by giving us a couple of surprises! Love foreign cinema!!
When we arrived they initially sat us inside and we were away from the movie and the the general romantic area. Initially kind of bummed out. After seeing an empty table, we asked to move and were kindly accomodated by our server. The outdoor area has heaters and has great vibes and is very romantic. The food is expensive but tasty and our kobe steak was absolutely delicious! The desserts are really tasty as well! Overall great experience!
Although difficult to park in that area we arrived for our 5:30 reservation obtained at 4:30 that Thursday night. Reservations are highly recommended and if you want to eat later you should make them much farther in advance. It was lovely. The only down side was a fireplace (or something else?) in the room was quite smoky. The scallops and risotto were lovely as was the salad with stone fruit and blue cheese.
We didnt had a good time, it was new year’s eve, we had a reservation at 10 pm and they had a pre fix menu, when we ordered they didnt have ravioli and made me order something else that I didnt like, also with the dessert they ran out of the dessert i wanted and made me order another one. On top of this i had to pay full price for dinner. Also they gave hats for some people not for us or the table beside us. It was packed and they didnt plan they food prep well. I will not go back or recommend it.
I have visited Foreign Cinema during lunch time and was seated indoors and for dinner where I was seated outdoors. The outdoor patio at night time was the best experience out of the two. the ambience is romantic and the decor is beautiful. The food was great. Our service from our server was OK, but not spectacular. The busboys were paying more attention to us than our actual server. She was also being a little rude to a tourist couple that was seated next to us– that just turned me off a little.
Overall, beautiful date night.
The food was good but I left there really frustrated with the restaurant.
When I made the reservation, more than a month in advance because it was part of our travel itinerary, I expected to sit in an open area with a movie screen, as shown in the photos on the site.
We were accommodated at a table in another area without screen. We asked to change and had our request denied, because there was no availability, according to the waiter. But the table next to ours during our dinner rearranged couples to the open area twice.
It seems that the management could have a little more attention with the people who have planned their experience at Foreign Cinema in advance and have come so far to this.
Never going back. Terrible service, one of the chef’s screamed and cussed out the table next to us, waiter had no idea about anything on the menu, sat at 2 tables that wobbled before finding a 3rd that didn’t, 2 entrees took 45 minutes to get to our table. Should I keep going..........
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and was not disappointed. While everything is a little pricey, your meal is well worth the money. Each dish we got was amazing in it's aroma and flavor. We opted to sit outdoors while the movie played in the background. Our waiter was attentive and checked on us frequently. He gave his recommendations when asked, and was willing to explain things that were on the menu. There is no free birthday surprise, but if you order a dessert they will put a candle on that dish. My only recommendation is for the movie volume to be a tad louder. There is great restaurant chatter going on so it's different to catch a single word from the movie. Not a huge issue, but it would be nice. Overall a great night.
Terrible service, the only question I asked was “how’s the risotto?” And the answer for my server was “everything is good here” and looking at me like “I wanna take your order and leave. It’s very sad that such a nice place let “order takers” work as a server.
