Fantastic food, a great building and an amazing wine list but our server was indifferent and disappeared for long stretches. Despite that we'll go back - everything was delicious
Cramped and noisy. Good for large groups but was hoping for a more intimate setting, especially for the price
Our server, India, was amazing. The food was excellent and just made for an amazing experience.
This was our first visit to Foreign Cinema. The best part of the restaurant was the food. We started with the calamari in a mole sauce. It was quite different from any calamari we'd had before so we gave it a try. Not sure we'd have it again, but for what it was supposed to be it was done very well. The squid was very tender and the sauce was well done and tasty. My wife had the duck and was very impressed. I had the scallops over risotto, which was their featured dish. It tasted great although there was an issue with the presentation... a bit sloppy. For dessert, we shared the chocolate pave. It was delicious! As with just about any restaurant, the noise level was high, especially since we were very close to the next table at which the conversation was loud and lively. Pricing is a bit high I thought, especially with the wine (where I thought the pour was a bit light). Service was both friendly and attentive. All in all, a place we'd come back to.
Never disappoints. Starters were delicious and creative, maybe even moreso than the entrees. Don't get me wrong, our entrees were also so great. Will definitely go back (and they change the menu often so it's exciting to go back). Great for special occasions.
Really really poor quality food. Ordered the most expensive items on the menu. Was very very dissatisfied, both myself and gf were here for her birthday. Our steaks were low quality meat, striped through with grissle we could not even cut through with steel knives. Didn’t complain because I didn’t want to ruin the evening, also 35 isn’t exactly super expensive for an entree. But was surprised how poor the food was. Will never be back.
Beautiful setting even though we were not able to sit in the theater room. Wonderful staff and the food was delicious. Had an amazing wine as well from our home state. Would definitely come back!
I am from Canada and i made the reservation for my birthday. The atmosphere was absolutly incredible the crab was incredible the flat iron steak i didnt enjoy but everything about the venue was amazing i will be back for sure.
They brought me a candle and dessert for my birthday and this was so sweet
Seated way up in the top out of the way. Came for the ambiance and didn’t experience it.
Amazing oyster selection. All dishes for all courses had fresh ingredients, creative construction, and tasted delicious. Our party had roasted beets and calamari for appetizers and lamb, beef, and duck for entree, and tried 3 different desserts. Service was attentive and knowledgable. One pays for this excellence, but for a special occasion it's worth it if you can afford it. We only wished the movie would be projected on an interior wall, not just on the outside patio.
This was my first time here and I plan on coming back. The service was great and the atmosphere was warm and comfortable with the tables not crammed next to each other. The server made a wine suggestion that we enjoyed. We started with the "pop tart" which was delicious. My friend had the Ruben and fries which she really enjoyed. It was a nice size too enabling her to pack half the sandwich to take home. I had the Dungeness Crab Frittata. There was one flavor in it that I didn't care for. I believe it was in the Green Goddess dressing. Other than that, it was good. The portion was on the smaller side but adequate.
We loved our meal at Foreign Cinema. We were attending a dance concert nearby and the service was impeccable, the meal was leisurely (not at all rushed yet very efficient), and the food was delicious.
The bar manager was very responsive to a pre-dinner telephone call about creating a drink that we had a yr ago..Service was very prompt..clearer of plates very attentive.
My oysters were terrific! Tuna poke was also tasty, and loved having the spicy sauce on the side..
Didn't realize how big a space you have esp for parties..
Thanks for a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a birthday...
There whisky list is way over priced, service was slow all the staff spoke really quietly and kept touching touching me
Celebrating a legal victory, had a great time
Everything we ordered was excellent. There were 8 of us and we shared so we tried a lot of dishes. Not one was mediocre, all were spot on. Steak was perfect, lamb was amazing, maybe could have done without sausage but was delicious.
Our waiter was so helpful and took great care of us. Best martini I’ve had in a while!
Went for brunch on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and had a very lovely meal with great friends. Our waitress was super friendly, fun and attentive.
Just a heads up: if you want the pop tarts or sticky buns, you should make a reservation early. We ate around 2:15PM and they were sold out of both. Truly disappointing in the moment but the drinks and the rest of the meal rectified the situation.
All-in-all, had a wonderful experience. Still heartbroken over that pop-tart though :(
I live in Cincinnati but was visiting a friend in San Francisco. I found Foreign Cinema online and it sounded intriguing. I asked my daughter and her boyfriend if they had tried it and whether they thought this would be a good choice for brunch. They had only been there for a Romantic Dinner and had really enjoyed it, but wondered if it might be more formal than what I had in mind. I did not find that to be the case, so I suspect the Brunch atmosphere just has a more casual vibe. The room was well-lit and very busy. We were seated right away and our waiter was at our table almost immediately. My friend and I are both Pescetarian and found plenty of veggie and fish dishes to choose from. We ordered cocktails: Madras Bloody Mary and High Fidelity --both delicious! There were 11 types of Oysters on the menu that can be ordered individually, so we mixed-and-matched a few varieties as an appetizer. For our main course we shared three small plates from the "Weekend Picnic" section of the menu: Pacific Tuna Poke, Brandade (whipped salt cod) served with toasted ciabatta, and Santa Barbara smoked salmon served with dill-crème fraîche and spelt toast. Each dish was beautifully arranged ( I wish I had taken pictures) and tasted amazing. I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite of the three, but I have been craving the Brandade several times in the week since I visited. This ended up being a perfect choice for Sunday Brunch with a friend. And, while I highly recommend Foreign Cinema I suggest you book early for brunch. While I was lucky to get the last available table for two a mere 12 days before my visit, I suspect getting a table for a larger party requires booking much further in advance.
The French toast was divine
Food was delicious and the experience was awesome. Definitely worth the price and wait.
It is my husband’s birthday, we reservation seat in the patio, everything is fantastic ! We ordered half Ichabod Flat Oysters and half Moon Shoal Oysters( love it),Gulf white prawn cocktail(like it), Baked fromage d’Affinois,(love it), Scallop entrée pair with red wine(love it), and Crème Brûlée (like it). The movie is Rushmore, it is raining day, but they have hearth, very warm. The atmosphere is great!
First time dining here, exceeded expectations. Building and decor are unique - space is very large with high ceilings. We got a starter (baked fromage), two small plates (arugula salad and plancha), as well as a main (duck) to share with two people and was the perfect amount of food. The plancha blew us away and was our favorite dish, but really all were great. Drinks were good but nothing crazy notable (the tequila one was basically a regular marg). Would come back again!
We chose to celebrate our wedding anniversary here on Friday night and we were not disappointed.
The food and cocktails were absolutely outstanding, flavor full, and truly unique, the ambiance was exceptional with the movie playing, the fairy lights and the little patio making it th perfect spot.
And our sever Leo was by far one of th highlights of the evening - he was professional, so friendly, so knowledgeable about the menu and incredibly attentive to the point that we would finish a drink and he would have the next order on the table within seconds. He was a true joy and the whole evening was just perfect. I recommend this spot very highly.
Thank you for celebrating our anniversary!
This was my second visit but both times I've had great food and service. I haven't experienced outside dining and movie watching yet but maybe next time - if it is warmer.
I started with a little fois gras and some poke, both understandably small but still sharable. My entree this time was a lavender-sprinkled pork chop that was superb. The suggested wine pairing was a hit as well.
I'll definitely go back.
The venue really allowed us to showcase our young love as newlyweds
This please has been in business since over 20 years ago. It had its ups and downs. We have been there number of times. Unfortunately it got worse since. First of all they were trying to sit us not in the main dining room ( even it was only 50% occupied). We went all the wY upstairs to realize that it was completely empty room . After I have declined the table upstairs next to the cleaning quarters we got a nice table at the main dining room . The portions size got smaller and smaller over the years . Kobe beef flat iron stake for a whopping $34 contains of 5 tiny slices of tagliata with a few veggies. Pasta dish for $24 is the cheapest on the menu but kind of small as well. Tina poke was the smallest size of appetiser I have ever seen for $16. The Service was just so , so. Our water glasses were never re filled. Our waiter tried to be help full but he was mainly enjoying to serve a table for 8 people , pouring g the wine, water , etc., There wasn’t the same enthusiasm with us. Overpriced and overrated .
New job and promotion
Made an reservation for outdoor seating for our anniversary and the host told us that the outdoor is full...and we have to wait 30 mins...what the hell!!! would you call A RESERVATION...?!? Horrible.
Food was great and so was the atmosphere and crowd!
Not too pricey either. I do think the staff could have been more friendly and warm.
Wouldn’t choose for a romantic spot due to the noise level which was horrendous!
Food was delicious - shrimp and sole for main, but desert was so-so - - baked pear was too crisp inside and pastry was a little soft - made up for it with the delicious creme brûlée!
Would return but for dinner with friends.
Hands down THE BEST PORK CHOPS EVER!!!!
Hands down LEO IS THE BEST SERVER ON THE PLANET!!!
Mark & Kendra always put Foreign Cinema on the agenda whenever we are in SF. Why?
Because of LEO and the pork chops!
Solid experience all around. Most dishes were good, although one dish wasn't warm when it came out.
Great service, good food , very chic with movie screen wish they had sound
My favorite dish is the brandade from the brunch menu. I’ve been to this restaurant three times now, and it’s fun and the food is great.
Our waitress was slightly on the rude / obnoxious side.. everything was delightful except our server who had an attitude.
Foreign Cinema was definitely a dining experience. I do not recommend Foreign Cinema for casual date goers. It was pretty loud and difficult to hear. In addition, the bar area where we sat before our reservation was ready (I showed up way too early, which is my own bad) was rather small and cramped.
The cocktails were amazing! I highly recommend the Streets of San Francisco (bourbon, aperol, chocolate bitters, among other delicious things). It was just the right amount of sweet and spicy, and it was a perfect midwinter cocktail.
The service was pretty wonderful. Our waitress was knowledgeable and very keen on the energy of our table. She gave us our space, but never forgot to check on us. She was great!
The entrees were also wonderful. I had the Kobe Steak and it was probably one of the top 5 steaks I have ever had. I did order the toast for the appetizer (it had a chorizo like topping), and it did leave a little to be desired. The bread sort of stole the spotlight from the toppings, and I wish I could have identified the toppings better.
Usually a solid choice, this visit was a let down. Service was disengaged, the NY Strip was good but seemed to have been drenched in rendered fat. The biggest confusion was provided by a small bowl of what looked like burnt, crunchy french fries from the bottom of a McDonalds fryer. When I asked the waiter what it was, he said it was 'Bread Salsa'. One of the most disgusting things I've tasked in a while.
Overall food was great. The service wasn’t great.
