I took my wife there for her birthday and we were in for a treat. We enjoyed delicious food and drinks and the service was amazing. We went during the day and can’t wait to go at night for dinner.
Our server was amazing! It was a great night and the food was great. It was a unique experience.
Delicious charcuterie platter to start. The curry fried chicken was outstanding. Great wine list, as well. Great outing with friends or a sweetheart.
The entire meal was amazing. We sampled a number of dishes and loved them all. Had a lovely chat with the sommelier about the 2018 vintage, fires, and worldwide. We felt safe and cared for my the staff who were attentive and friendly.
We ate in the very back corner of the outdoor patio, which was warm (with heaters going) and quiet. It was noisier and felt a little crowded in the larger patio area. Fried oyster appetizer was a winner with crispy outside, tender moist interior, crunchy slaw perfect accompaniment. Scallops in broth tasty but nothing remarkable. Fried chicken with middle Eastern twist was yummy (it’s fried chicken, right?). Birthday cake dessert was delicious with 2 kinds of ganache, satisfying for chocolate lovers although we agreed we’d like the cake to icing ratio slightly higher.
Long story short, the food and staff are best in class, the space is unique and wonderful. We're still in a pandemic and with that comes rules designed with everyone's safety in mind. Personally I love it, I feel safe and the process feels organized, there's more space! The rules are outlined when you make your reservation and again when you arrive, these are fair rules and don't take away from the experience. You must order all your food at once to limit interaction and they tell you this before giving you a menu. You must keep your mask on unless you're actively bringing food and drink to your mouth, they tell you this at the host desk before you are seated. You should disregard any reviews that complain about compromised service due to these rules, all this information is provided up front before you arrive, the rules should not surprise you. Once you've mentally accepted the process you're destined to have a fabulous time. Foreign Cinema always offers a spectacular dining experience. The servers are happy to help you curate a delicious combo of apps, mains and drinks, they are happy to describe the many different types of oysters and help you find one that suits your palate. We couldn't decide between a few types of oysters, we "accidentally" ended up with an extra serving on our platter. I believe this was a low key appreciation for us being an easy going table willing to follow the rules and ready to have a fabulous dining experience. I've been dining at Foreign Cinema since 2008, I have to say I love the slower pace and the spaced out seating experience, it's a new vibe in a normally high energy restaurant. Book after dark to catch a movie, we lucked out with a screening of Young Frankenstein.
Very trendy, well decorated space. Tasty, beautifully plated food. The theater element is very cool.
This place is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in SF. Incredible ambiance, great service, flavorful food. You can't go wrong with anything here. Pro tip: the movies only play at certain times. If you want to experience that, make sure your dinner time and their movie times align via the website. Patio seating is the way to go.
The oysters and rolled omelette are my favorite! The staff is very sweet as well.
Hard to think of a nicer place to have brunch then the Foreign Cinema courtyard. Given that the pandemic is still with us, tables were well spaced, roof was partially open, masking and other mitigation steps were in effect, and everyone was thoughtful.
Food was terrific, our server was great, and it felt like a taste of the "Before Times."
Love it always!
Great ambience and table setup. Love the lighting! Check-in service and communication was terrific. A little slow to start in getting drinks/water but overall a nice experience
The food was amazing and the outdoor setting made for perfect date night ambiance. Tables were spaced apart well and the overall experience was absolutely wonderful. We had a wonderful evening!
Wonderful! We will be back!
Great atmosphere matched with wonderful service. Highly recommend!
I love every experience at Foreign Cinema. It’s really a gem here in SF.
Colleen - bartender was awesome. Aged ribeye with truffles? excellent. Specialty drinks? Awesome. It was the best dinner I’ve ever had.
I picked FC to celebrate my birthday for the amazing food, service and atmosphere. The waiter and sommelier were on point. The steak tartar, calamari and oysters were amazing.
The asparagus burrata starter came out HOT, we couldn’t touch the dish it was so hot. The greens were warped with 4 orange slices on top. This was supposed to be a cold plate!
The scallops and whatever else was on the plate were floating in sauce. I think the sauce should have been drizzled? Again, I like sauce but I don't think this was the correct execution. The pork chop was ordered well done and it came out medium at best and very rare at the bone.
We had a great time and paid a hefty bill. Your kitchen needs this feedback as do all the servers presenting the food. We get it, pandemic, we’re all figuring it out.
Extremely slow service. I left hungry - the dishes were sparse and overpriced.
The food and service were excellent, and the courtyard was great ambience!
So many people dining. How exciting. The patio is airy and has enough heat lamps too. What a treat to have great food and enjoy being out Of course the food and service are first rate.
We had a wonderful Sunday brunch, with fantastic food and great service on their patio. Was a beautiful day and we enjoyed ourselves. There was no pressure to rush and the food was brought out at a nice relaxing pace.
The food was amazing as well as the ambiance and service. I will be back!
This place exceeded my expectations!! Everything was just lovely!!
Our Easter Brunch was fantastic and every brunch and dinner I have had here exceeds expectations. I am still thinking about how good the food was1
Divine food! Everything we ordered was delicious!
Very good food an service
Love the ambiance and the food! Would highly recommend sitting in the courtyard area. There were enough heat lamps to keep everyone warm!
Amazing experience. Dinner was fantastic. Highly recommend the fried chicken, calamari, and cheesecake. Ambiance was lovely. Best date night spot in SF thus far.
Birthday celebration take two. Actually we were to dine here last year for my birthday (April) but we all know how that ended. It was a wonderful dining experience. Our waiter was attentive, did not feel rushed. The food was delicious. I enjoyed the duck breast, son ordered the steak and hubby had the halibut.
Always a hit! They make great suggestions on the wine. The food is inventive so definitely ask the server about it. The ambiance is relaxing and modern.
Amazing as always. Love this restaurant and excited to to visit again!
I was charged $4 for a side of brown avocado. I never saw my server while my eggs were getting cold, so I just picked off the brown parts.
The fruit and with “yogurt” was a joke. A very wide bowl-plate with unsweet berries, sour kiwi, one deconstructed blood orange, and some nuts spread out. The yogurt was more of a garnish. There was not even a spoonful. You couldn’t take that on a picnic.
Nobody is tasting the fruit served.
I will say the scramble was delicious, as was the Cinema Paradiso.
I love everything about Foreign Cinema. This is one of the best restaurants in the city.
Wonderful date night spot. They, as all other restaurants are getting used to the new normal and were busy. The server was very friendly, knowledgeable and the staff held it together. Be patient with them, all restaurants are a bit understaffed and getting their legs under them again. I have nothing bad to say about this experience, and I look forward to going back again.
Amazing severs and staff. Food was excellent as was the wine recommendation.
Was an excellent date night, I had been trying to book a reservation and finally found a night that worked- and it turned out to be the perfect evening! The food was delicious, the ambiance was wonderful, and the service was fantastic. We had an early dinner and were able to see the restaurant shift from daytime to night, and catch the very beginning of the movie Fanrastic Mr. Fox right as we ate dessert.
Really cute ambience, excellent and timely food service. We were really full and wanted to get dessert elsewhere in the Mission, but they still came by with a complimentary Kiwi sorbet dessert for my BF's birthday- it was very sweet!
Food was fabulous. Would highly recommend going here for dinner. Lovely atmosphere sitting outside.
Delicious food, I would definitely recommend. My only feedback for improvement is for the staff to smile more.
