An off night for what is usually a reliable operation. While waiting to be seated we heard at least two parties who were still waiting for their tables more than 30 minutes after their reservation time. Thankfully we were seated only about 5 minutes after our reservation time. Our starters came out quickly and were grouped nicely (the baked cheese first, then two seafood starters paired together). But as he cleared the last of the starters, our server announced that the mains (steak and duck breast) would be another 15-20 minutes! When they arrived, the steak was not the requested temperature (rare/medium-rare vs. the requested medium), and the wild rice accompanying the duck was undercooked and quite crunchy. The presentations were also quite messy and looked more scraped onto the plate than composed. For a Tuesday night, the place was quite packed, I can only imagine that they were just a bit overwhelmed or maybe just off their game. I will go back as I've had many flawless meals there, but trying to impress my date on his first visit to Foreign Cinema was a moderate fail.
The food continues to be very good. Unfortunately, we waited a long time for a waiter to take drink orders and there was probably a 30 minute gap between cleared first courses and the arrival of entrees. You know, when everyone keeps breaking off little pieces of bread they don't really want and you hold off pouring more wine because it will be gone by the time the entrees come. When the entrees did arrive, they were staggered--arriving one at a time over about 7 or 8 minutes. These things may seem small but they have a way of bringing a festive dinner down...
We had a great time celebrating a birthday there
For the price, I would expect more from a service aspect. Our entree was clearly forgotten about, and nothing was done to make up for it, or even an apology. Won’t be returning, which is sad because the food was good.
Amazing location and delicious food! Brought friends from out of town and everyone loved it! Our food did take over an hour to get to us though, so don’t be in a rush if you want to eat here during the busy brunch times.
Great place and unique. The food was amazing and the wine/spirits/beer list very comprehensive. The Somm is also available to answer any questions. We ate out on the patio with the movie playing on the wall. Loved the drive-in movie speakers - great touch!
Price is very reasonable. Recommend making dinner reservations at least a week or two ahead of your visit.
The ambiance and theme of the restaurant are great. What was disappointing was the portion size of the food (Kobe steak), considering how pricey it was
Everything about this place is exceptional: food, wines (exceptional list of Sonoma Coast pinots), service, ambiance. I keep coming back.
I think this is a beautiful place to go when you would like to treat yourself. The ambiance was incredible. The cocktails were delicious and I said if I thought the food was great I’d get a copy of their book, I now have a copy on my shelf. Our server was also very friendly so thanks for a great night :) hope to come back when I get paid again haha
Uniquely beautiful atmosphere
Everything was perfect but no one loved their food. Everyone said “it was ok”. It didn’t used to be that way. Otherwise I can’t complain about anything else.
Took too long between appetizers and main course to arrive but otherwise a good dinning out experience.
The calamari was phenomenal
We had a wonderful meal. It was our first time at the restaurant and we will definitely return. Wonderful service and food!
Staff was very polite and accommodating. One of those in our party is in a wheelchair and another is hard of hearing. They were very patient in finding ways to accommodate us and work through what usually might be a challenging situation for some. Food was delicious and the outdoor seating was perfect.
Best brunch in the city HANDS DOWN!! Most romantic spot in the city for a dinner date. This place never disappoints. Make your reservation now!
Wonderful birthday brunch this past Sunday at Foreign Cinema! Thank you for the delicious food, wonderful cocktails and perfect service. It's always a pleasure to return to Foreign Cinema! Hats off to Gayle & John once again.
The service was great and the ambiance was fun. Our entrees took forever and came out cold. It was very pricey for the food they serve.
Phenomenal food and ambiance!
The service is always excellent, kind, informative, prompt and everything you would hope for in a fancy meal. I've always loved how you can sit for a series of dishes so expertly prepared, and be helped by waitstaff who are so kind and helpful. The food was flavorful and expertly designed (in its flavor). I live in Joshua Tree and coming back to town for this brunch was such a special outing. Thank you!
I would say that having a line for those with reservations that is separate from waitlist folks would have been helpful with our schedule for that first morning seating, but it was such a SMALL inconvenience compared to the incredible meal, and in no way represents the takeaway from our wonderful brunch.
Thanks Foreign Cinema!
Went there for Valentine's Day! Totally disappointing for the $360+ we paid for food + 2 cocktails. Totally not worth it! The panna cotta was probably the worst I've had in my life. So citrusy and awful! Nothing was worth coming back for or even mentioning. The only savior was the ambience.
Went for valentine’s day. Food was awful and over price. Prosciutto was not cured enough. Steaks were raw and cold. Pana Cotta was clumpy and disgusting. Absolutely not worth $140 per person. Will not be coming back.
The Valentine's Day menu was clearly new to the whole team, as the servers didn't know what anything was and the chefs had a hard time executing any of it well. They couldn't even correctly tell us what movie was playing, and that's their whole spiel as a restaurant. They forgot to bring us the shiitake consommé until we asked for it, the sea urchin fettuccine was cold, undercooked, and tough, and the ceviche trio was far too salty. I will say the chèvre cheesecake was absolutely incredible and was really the only redeeming factor of the night.
I was really excited to try this place out for the first time, but ended up leaving sorely disappointed. It wasn't worth a normal dinner price, and it *definitely* was not worth the over-priced prix fixe price for V-Day. Ended up paying $720 for two people (including tax, tip and a bottle of wine), which is just about as much as I could pay at multi-Michelin-star restaurants in the city and would surely have been much better.
Amazing Valentine’s Day meal.
Service was great- definitely not the best food we've had in the city
We had a good time with friends. There were a lot of interesting menu items. This was my first time here. The positives were the space itself, the interesting menu and the super tasty entree I had, the chicken. Some misses were the service , which felt a bit rushed even though there were open tables all around. Also , this might sound pretentious but it’s nice when the waiter reminds us what was in the dish. I could’ve used a little refresher of what we ordered and the main ingredients. But overall we really enjoyed it.
It had really cool decor and great ambiance but unfortunately the food was forgettable and on the pricey side. Service was great but the food took quite a while and the fish and chips were cold when they arrived
After having an extensive conversation with our server about having Celiac, I was given a plate of food with little pasta balls in it. I asked if they were pasta balls and was told they weren't and I asked them to check because they really looked like little pasta balls....they were in fact pasta balls. Unprompted, the manager came over to apologize and offered to comp the app that was glutened. Kind of a crappy way to start my birthday but oh well. The food overall was good but the portions are teeny tiny. The ambiance is where it's at though. Such a pretty space.
Another great visit. Thanks for making my sister’s birthday celebration extra special with the extra TLC. Austin Powers was definitely a good choice! More Mike Myers in the future please!
Everything we ate was fabulous. Service was terrific.
This is the best restaurant in San Francisco.
What a cool place with an amazing menu - food and drinks - and terrific service!
Very few vegetarian restaurants and the wines are nearly all natural (which isn’t to everyone’s taste).
My husband and I had the most wonderful experience dining at Foreign Cinema. It’s a restaurant that’s been around for a long time - an institution.
It was surprisingly our first time dining there and possibly the last supper/date as a couple (I’m 38 weeks pregnant and our first can arrive any day now)! So, we’re extremely happy that this meal was one to remember and share the dining experience with our friends/family.
Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. But what made the evening memorable was our server - she was/is the best! We will be back soon with a plus one! Foreign Cinema is now on our top 5 and a staple to our rotation of restaurants. Thank you!
This place was amazing! I wish the mixed drinks menu had more variety, but over all it was delicious. They were quick, kind, and clean. I do wish the volume of the movie would’ve been a little louder, or had subtitles. It was very hard to hear.
Very Very bad service... to bad and food its just ok...
Nice bright space, excellent food. The citrusy, smoky pulled pork in the breakfast tostada was delicious.
Great service. Provided perfect details during our anniversary meal. Food was exceptional and came out perfectly timed. Will be definitely going back.
Too many servers but good food
It was a great experience
The food never disappoints, the wine list is extraordinary, and the staff is super professional. So happy to have this gem in my neighborhood!
