What Insiders Are Saying
Foreign Cinema in the Mission is a San Francisco classic for brunch, and dinner is solid too.
The food was wonderful except for the rash I broke out in related to Celiac because they cross contaminated my food. I made it clear on my reservation and when I ordered that I was Celiac and they said they could accommodate.
Our server was great, the food was great, and the ambiance was great.
We went during lunch time. The food was just okay for lunch. Nothing special. I can see why people will find it cool to come at night for the ambiance, especially when it is dark.
The service was good. The people that sat us down wasn't attentive and we had to ask for water and a menu. The waiter that came after was nice and accommodated us when we asked for an extra umbrella to block out the sun that beating down on my face.
Overall, a good lunch if you want to check out mission and sit somewhere nice. Not a place for foodie.
Great atmosphere and super nice service but Waited 1 hour to eat
There really is no place like this.
Had a business dinner here but, I felt quite like this would be an ideal place to come and have a romantic dinner w a date/loved one.
Also the movie on our night was Alice in Wonderland. They had two versions. One was from an original film print and the other a DVD.
If you're a film buff, foodie, or you just want to try something really unique for dinner... This is the spot.
Fun place, the movie and overall ambiance is great for an interesting evening out.
Really disappointed. The service was rushed, the server was very rude and the food average, very salty. Nothing special to justify the price. I paid 20 for a glass of rose. Never going back. Total rip off.
Lots of energy with a neat ambience. If you’re in a hurry, this place is not for you. (Just trying to get you in the right frame of mind.) That being said, we had an excellent dinner and wonderful service. Great last night outing before heading back to the East Coast.
Our waitress forgot our second appetizer then ordered the wrong main entree. They brought the swordfish instead of the Salmon wrapped in fig leaf. Didn’t think we were valued as customers.
We had a great night. Loved the food and the restaurant .... a bit of fun in the city...
Definitely have to plan ahead to get a reservation here. The food is always excellent. We had some minor issues with the service. Even though we were seated at 5:30 for our 5:30 reservation, it took a long while for anyone to even come over and take drink orders (probably on order of 10-15 minutes). I think there might've been a waiter in training though. Either way, it didn't ruin our night, just took a little longer than expected.
We took my daughter here for her 25th birthday after not being here for some time and the reason I call it one of my faves still holds true. The starters were exceptional. We loved the goat cheese and salmon tartare. Along with the prosciutto and melon. The flavors are married well.
This place continues to be one of fave places hands down.
Super amazing, very quality service and incredible food. I’ve already recommended the place to friends. can’t wait to go back
The experience was great. I was here for a birthday date and food was great!!
I'm not sure what took me so long to dine here but I'm glad I did! I made reservations for my birthday for dinner with my boyfriend and we had a great experience. We sat outdoor and our server was fairly attentive (he was a bit slow to bring my second glass of wine... lol). We shared the tomato salad with feta and hummus and it was very fresh and delicious. I then had the swordfish, which was very tender and flaky. The potatoes were perfectly crisp! My bf had the duck and he said it was the best he's ever had! Everything was seasoned perfectly well. The sun began to set by the time dessert came and they began showing Alice in Wonderland on the projector. The speakers near the table weren't too loud to be obnoxious or ruin an otherwise lovely dinner. The hanging lights above us made for a perfectly romantic mood. Also, they were sweet enough to bring my panna cotta with a candle and a "happy birthday" message :) Highly recommend, and I'll definitely be back!
Great setting for fun get-together but very noisy for conversations. Food is good but the space is packed with too many table in a tight space. It's tough to have a romantic conversation with the next table almost bumping elbows with you. Space it out and it's much more versatile for different occasions.
Service was not up to par. Some examples could be the following:
- our waiter had not tasted majority of the dishes. As a previously experienced waiter, it is a basic necessity to taste and understand the dishes in order to explain the individuality of each dish
- the removal of the dishes was astonishing; under no circumstances should a client see a waiter removing utensils and stacking dishes on top of one another. Additionally, the bus boy removed the utensil over the shoulder and arm of my friend prior to removing the plate. It was noisy and messy and unpleasant.
Otherwise, the food was excellent and I believe the service was not at par to the food.
This was our first experience at Foreign Cinema and it was amazing! The atmosphere is relaxed, contemporary and very inviting. The staff was so accommodating and gracious! We ordered the cumin scented brandade which was delicious and then moved onto the fois gras-duck mousse and beef sirloin carpaccio both of which we reveled in. Both dishes were awesome we ordered a second round and took the five=spice duck breast home for lunch the next day. If I could eat there once a week, I would.
Everything was amazing, but I had a pretty long wait for my first drink ( 10-15 minutes). The drink was amazing, all the flavors I love and I would wait just as long the next time.
I ordered the second drink and it didn't tasting anything like the first drink. i spoke w. the server and he had them remake it and it was exactly like the first.
Ambiance, staff and food was amazing. I would return.
Fantastic weekend brunch. French toast to die for. Lovely ambiance too. And friendly service. Thoroughly recommended.
Foreign Cinema is a unique dining experience with a film noire ambience. Sophisticated cocktails, amazing food, including sesame fried chicken.
Really great ambiance and the food is great too. California style cuisine. The staff is really friendly and provided some great recommendations. We had the ahi tuna poke starter and the smoked salmon and caviar as well. Main dish was the coffee rubbed steak and the salmon. Every one of the dishes were pretty phenomenal and we tied it off with a half bottle of Rose.
Walked out paying just about 200 so not bad for a great restaurant in SF that has had a lot of hype.
The food was outstanding, you get what you pay for in this case in ADDITION to the amazing ambiance. Would recommend requesting an outdoor seat to fully enjoy the atmosphere. The service was very attentive and personal, it just took a long time between courses.
Foreign Cinema is absolutely beautiful and I've loved previous experiences here but this experience didn't quite live up to the hype. I had really wanted a wow-factor (which is what you pay for) and left underwhelmed (by service and by food).
La experiencia del cine esta divertida, la comida bastante normal por no decir que regular y muy costosa para lo que es. Hay muchísimas mas propuestas interesantes y aun mas costosas pero que valen mas la pena.
That place was great. I had the steak and it was cooked to perfection. I also love the drinks!
Definitely a place to go out of your way to get to. The service, food, and atmosphere are all top notch. Make sure you get here for all of it.
We came here for my wife’s birthday. They were great with our 7 and 8 year olds. The food would have been outstanding had it not been way too salty in nearly every dish. Despite the saltiness we enjoyed the meal, it’s just that the menu and ingredients deserved a more subtle touch with the seasoning.
Every single dish was amazing!!! The service inside the restaurant was very good. In comparison, a couple receptionists were not as welcoming.
My favorite place to take a first time visitor to San Francisco!
There are many things to like about this restaurant. The mix of flavors are wonderful, but the menu is limited and the first courses leave a lot to be desired. The ambiance is terrific and super fun - the service left a lot to be desired. Our server seemed to be having a bad day, and his mood took away from the entire experience. I am certain that there is a lot of culinary talent and creativity at this restaurant, however, they need to rethink their servers and menu items.
Very fun and beautiful environment! I can’t remember the name the our server but he was incredibly polite and did everything possible to ensure we had a great experience!
The food is always good and creative. The service was excellent.
Diverse, delicious dishes. Food memorable.
Our waiter was attentive and kind. service was great
Thank you for making our 9 year Anniversary a great one.
Probably the coolest restaurant in San Francisco. The food is amazing. My husband and I have been to both brunch and dinner and both were equally great. The ambiance is so cool. The service is also great. We had a 7pm reservation for my birthday but our babysitter was SO late so we weren’t able to get there until 8 and the hostess staff was so understanding and sweet and was able to get us a table outside on a busy Saturday night where we had been hoping to get a table. Def one of San Francisco’s best restaurants
This was a birthday brunch and we loved it from the genuinely gracious server to the wonderful food. We shared the enormous cinnamon roll with frosting and each of us had something different--wonderful pastrami reuben sandwich, champagne omelet and baked eggs in polenta. Delicious and filling and very special. And a great value at brunch. Can't wait to go again,
I had brunch with my family of 5 while vacationing in San Francisco. The service and atmosphere were amazing. The food was beautifully presented and very good. We absolutely enjoyed our whole experience and that includes my 9 year old son!
It was a mixed bag because I went a few times years ago for brunch and it was excellent. This was my first time eating for eating. The service was impeccable however the portions for the amount of food given was very disappointing. For drinks I had a Strawberry Infused Lillet Blanc which refreshing and delicious. My friend had two drinks, one a red wine served in a wide glass the pour was not genorous, and then towards the end of the meal she ordered champagne which came in a wide glass and it was flat. For an appetizer my friend and I shared the Honey Kissed Peach Salad and it definitely wasn't a whole peach on the plate. The flavor was good but it was not enough. For the entree my friend ordered the Pork Chop and I ordered the Garganelle Pasta dish. My friend's pork chop portion was huge, however my Pasta dish which was cost me $25.00 was like a cup of pasta, a tablespoon a peas, and generous grating of parmesan. It was so unfortunate because pasta cost pennies on the dollar, and the flavor profile I just anticipated get more of it. I had to order more bread. For dessert my friend had the Rose Meringue with raspberry sorbet, blackberries, vanilla almond cream, and coco nibs. The flavor profile was there, but she got the smallest scoop of sorbet I've seen at a restaurant. I had the Nectarine -Blackberry crostata with lavender crumble, and mascarpone ice cream, which was delicious and the average fining dining dessert size. Overall I'd recommend giving it a try but be mindful of what you order.
