Lack of veg options. Poor service (rude waitress)
The food was all excellent the highlight was a starter which was a calamari in a mole sauce, out of this world. Excellent would definitely go back.
Great plate sizes. Service is impeccable. Second time and highly recommend
This was our third choice. We couldn’t get an earlier time I’m State Bird and Liho Liho. We had the Heirloom tomatoes, Alaskan cod dandrade, Duck, Hawaiian tombo, and birthday cake a la mode with coffees. Food was delicious. Not the best but up to par. Location was not an ideal area. Parking was hard. The birthday cake was okay. It was recommended by our server. Nothing special. We thought it and with ice cream. That’s extra. Don’t fall for that. If they ask what flavor ice cream you want. It’s plus $3 from $12 birthday cake = $15 + $8 coffee. Nothing to get excited about. It’s just a regular chocolate cake with caramel. It didn’t wow me. I don’t like the fact that they charge for employees medical. It’s called SFM (San Francisco Mandate). That’s BS. This place is not cheap. The owner should be able to afford the employees benefits. This a whole lot of BS from the City and county of SF. That’s why restaurants are closing. It’s not worth a drive from Danville. That’s all. I don’t think we’re coming back here. The Duck and Tuna was simply delicious. Add some color to it. It’s monochromatic. It doesn’t look appetizing. Not good for instagram posting. 😁👍🏽😎
Had the pleasure of proposing to my girlfriend here. The staff was phenomenal and I cannot praise them enough for their hospitality and the genuine joy they took in sharing this experience with us
Amazing food and great service!
Ambiance is very chic but still inviting
We had an amazing date night here. The ambiance is lovely... If you can sit out side try to. The movie we watched (seemingly we were the only ones watching it) was a silent movie called Sunrise from 1926 - it was perfect. We had a couple of bottles of wine and the sommelier was a great help in finding the perfect wines to compliment our mood, tastes and meal - the wine selection is well over 1200 bottles. The oysters were fresh and fabulous. The lavender goat cheese was spectacular. The beef carpaccio was davine. And the steak.. wow!! Such a lovely night!!
it was the perfect spot for an intimate birthday brunch for four. the food was delicious and the ambiance is always inviting and cool.
Meal was so nice, and the Staff served a small cute birthday dessert. The experience here was awesome!
Was looking forward to this trendy restaurant. The food is a hit and miss. The lavender goat cheese is overrated, not very good. The charcuterie plate is super delicious. The New York steak was very disappointing and all chopped off (you get few bits of steak). Cheese plate for dessert was also disappointing
The service is really bad; we couldn’t get our waitress attention at all times and she made mistakes in our order.
Overall, not a pleasant experience and will not going back given all the choices available in the city.
Loved Foreign Cinema!
Came here with my family to celebrate a special birthday - It felt like the whole staff knew and went out of their way to make sure our family felt special. Food was delicious and the service was spot on - Let us take our time while remaining attentive if we ever needed anything.
Looking forward to coming back.
Drive was sketchy however once in the restaurant it was amazing!
They helped me out with a surprise birthday dinner, and it was a success! My partner was overwhelmed and so happy. Thank you to the staff that helped us make it happen!
I went with me and my partner and had a lovely evening. My only wish would be to not have so much wine options as I will never be able to tell the difference. I will absolutely come back again. Thank you for a magical experience.
we love going to Foreign Cinema, great food and very friendly service.... and the owner/chef is a very down to earth guy....
What an unexpected experience. It is such a cool space, the food excellent and an impressive wine list. Read about it on a blog and thought it sounded unique...and boy did it live up to that expectation. If you want you impress friends, family or a date...this is the place.
My boyfriend and I enjoyed our 3 year anniversary watching Raising Arizona out on the patio and eating the most delicious food. The weather was perfect, the ambiance was enchanting, and our service was phenomenal! Our server recommended the Book of Elijah and I second his opinion, especially if you like whiskey. We will definitely be back!
We were constantly rushed. Our waiter hovered for an order; 3-4 times/course someone tried to remove our still unfinished plates; immediately after dessert was dropped (2 mins after ordering it) the check arrived while we were eating. We were a table of 3 for a casual dinner and were out in 75 minutes, so we didn’t linger or otherwise occupy a table beyond reasonable times.
This was a Monday night, not a Friday/Saturday either.
Food was generally good but a few misses here and there.
Enjoyed in the distant past, would not recommend anymore.
Enjoyed brunch at the Foreign Cinema. Nice day to be out. Server only came by a couple of times to refill the coffee. Food was okay, I had the Champagne Truffle omelet, it was okay. Brown Sugar Bacon was good though!
Great food, service and movie!
Foreign Cinema continues to be a reliable and fun, but increasingly expensive. I recently went for my birthday and had a nice time, although the service wasn't as attentive as it has been in the past, possibly because like most nights the restaurant was packed (on a Thursday evening).
While waiting for the menu we ordered a Negroni and glass of Domaine de la Taille aux Loups which were both good. The cost of the cocktail is slightly lower than many similar places in SF. We asked for some bread which was promptly delivered, their dark sourdough bread is amazing, especially with olive oil instead of butter.
We started with the smoked salmon platter which wasn't quite as nice as the same plate a few weeks before. It lacked the fish pate and if there was any orange caviar it was hidden. We also had the beef carpaccio which was very nice with creamy slivers of raw beef, herbs, chips, cress and mustard.
For the entrees we chose the Duroc pork chop which was a generous size and very moist, and the Fort Bragg petrale sole with beans and zucchini, which was nice although the fish portion was small.
Foreign Cinema has an extensive wine list by the glass, carafe and bottle, with options to satisfy most budgets. We had a 500ml carafe of the pinot noir blend which is a fairly light, dry red wine, which was a little too acidic, but OK.
Overall it was a nice evening, and since it was my birthday the waiter brought us a complementary pluot granita, which was fabulous.
The total with tip was $220.
When we arrived we were sat at the table for 20 mins before someone greeted us and gave us water. Also, if you are reserving they should give you the option for inside or outside. The experience is very different. The inside space lacks ambiance in comparison to the dreamy outdoor area. I have been wanting to go to Foreign Cinema for a while now and wish it exceeded my expectations. But it did not.
I've eaten here for both brunch and dinner, always great food, service and atmosphere. I really appreciate that there are 'interesting' food wines by the glass so we wine nerds can go off the beaten path without having to coax a whole table along with us.
This is one of my favorites restaurant in SF. I love to go back there at any chance I get.
This time, however, the food was okay.
I wish they have more local Napa wine selections. The wine they have are mostly Italy and French wines. I would like to pair with local wines with foods.
After 2 hours of dining, we were asked to leave. Unbelievable and embarrassing as I recommended this place to out-of-country guests. The food was good (not great), and the ambiance is trendy. The service was condescending and arrogant. This place used to be a great SF establishment, but has become pretentious. Go here if you want to pretend that you know SF dining, but you really don’t.
I've found writing this review really challenging as I have had amazing experiences at Foreign Cinema in the past however last night the service was really poor. It was my family's last night in San Francisco before heading back to the UK and due to the poor service the night just felt flat and didn't leave a great impression. Our appetizers came out before wine, ordering was messy and the waiter had a strange attitude which felt rude by everyone at the table.
Excellent as always!!! A must go place
I have eaten here often over the years and always enjoyed the atmosphere. That said, the last 2 times I found the food very disappointing. What sounded innovative and flavorful in the menu description turned out to be mediocre at best. More so, my main course of sole a month ago came to the table barely warm. This last Sunday my duck breast was also barely warm, not to mention the bland flavor and goopy sauce. I can forgive a favorite restaurant an off night on rare occasions but 2 in a row means I won’t be returning soon.
A good second date, we enjoyed the food and ambience. Would come back, next time for dinner (today was for brunch)
We were hosting friends for a birthday and hadn’t been there in years. We were thrilled that it was even better than we remembered!
The food and presentation was fine, the prices a bit high and the noise almost defening. But we all enjoyed our meals.
We had a very bad experience because of our server. It was busy, however, he barely paid attention to our table. We had to ask to order -- we had to ask for refills of drinks, and once PART of our food was delivered, he never came by to make sure we had everything. Once we did order, I told him we had theater tickets and had to hustle to make the curtain because he didn't take our order for 30 minutes after we arrived. One of our party did not receive her meal for almost 20 minutes after the rest of us did. He didn't apologize. I've eaten at Foreign Cinema several times, and always had an outstanding experience. My friends were underwhelmed. We were late to the theater.
Excellent service , amazing food , would highly recommend to friends and family.
The beef carpaccio was orgasmic
Good food. Very noisy. It gets drafty and cold outside.
The mole calamari was a religious experience. The pork chop may have been the best I’ve ever eaten. The fried chicken would have been outstanding had it not been so completely outshone by everything else we ordered.
Fantastic creative dishes with top notch service.
Fantastic atmosphere and delicious food! A San Francisco classic everyone should check out.
Our three hour evening of delicious food, wine and John visiting our table was most memorable.
