Nino Trotta — who owns Forcella alongside his girlfriend, general manager Shannon MacGowan, and his brother, wine director Christian Trotta — say that the cozy, candlelit vibe of the restaurant sets Forcella apart in a sea of massive North End trattorias.
“It’s tiny, 33 or 34 seats,” he said. “It’s perfect for a date.”
Chef Robert Morotto, formerly of the Aquitaine Group, has designed a menu that includes dishes from all over Italy, with a slight lean toward Naples, where the Trotta family is from. Primi dishes include meatballs, lobster bisque, and crispy quail, while pastas range from linguine alle vongole and risotto to gnocchi with braised rabbit. Salmon, ribeye, and pork porterhouse round out the menu.

Perfect night out with friends visiting. Amazing food - fresh pasta, duck was delicious, attentive service with wine pairing recommendations, gorgeous lit outdoor patio hidden. A favorite!
The seating and outdoor ambience was very comfortable and quiet. We enjoyed the food we had, with the exception of being disappointed in the Caesar salad. Expect to have more anchovies and more upscale lettuces. We had the special which was lobster risotto and we had rabbit gnocchi.
Sat in the back patio Which was a gem of a find. Very spacious, well spaced out tables but with a lot of energy on a Saturday night. Went there for a wedding anniversary. Great food, good wine list.
The food was delicious, excellent service and I loved the outdoor patio. All around enjoyable evening. I will be back!
Beautiful romantic setting on the back patio is a great little gem. Food was on point and only questionable element was the check brought rather abruptly after the mains sans any offer for desert. We were polite and had friendly rapport throughout. Maybe she had somewhere to be. No worries as we just walked over to Mike’s Pastry for bomb cannoli. Great dinner overall
Menu is fantastic. Wide variety of items and for the most part everything was well prepared. Wine list is on the small side, but quite good. Relative to other spots in the North End, the menu is fairly pricey. Some posters may complain about lack of coffee/desert, but many restaurants in this neighborhood forgo these to encourage people to wander to cafes in the neighborhood instead (and there are plenty). If dining outdoors, ask to be seated in the back courtyard. Wasn't aware of that at this spot and it's got a decent amount of charm. Overall, enjoyed it and would return.
Just spectacular food. We ordered the gnocchi with rabbit, braised lamb Genovese and the linguine with clam sauce. One the best Italian meals we’ve ever eaten.
We sat outside and the ambiance was excellent. The back patio is surrounded by multi-story buildings and is very cool, but that also makes it a little loud. Service and food were excellent.
They asked us to put our full order in at once - which is fine but kind of goes against the vibe you want on a Friday evening in the north end. They also don’t have desert or coffee? Weird for the north end.
We were greeted promptly and taken to outdoor table. Service was very good and my duck was memorable. We will definitely when we are in Boston again.
great place an hidden gem in the hearth of the north end
I lived in the North End for 10 years, and very much wish Forcella had been around then. The service is excellent. The food is elevated and perfectly prepared. The ambiance and large rear patio create an exclusive outdoor atmosphere away from the throngs of people and traffic on Hanover street. One of the neighborhood’s and city’s best.
Love the risotto specials. And everything else on the menu.
Forcella is a nice North End neighborhood restaurant. The food and wine selections are good. Unfortunately, they don’t serve desserts. Grab some nearby. It’s the North End. Also, try to not book on a weekend or at night. Parking is limited. But, I’d go back especially for the risotto next time. Enjoy!
Excellent food and service. Lovely place, can't wait to try outdoor patio.
Everything was phenomenal! The rabbit gnocchi, the carbonara, the risotto di giorno was delicious. We had the meatballs, the house salad and the octopus!
Forcella doesn't disappoint. The patio is beautiful and the food is solid.
We went for a birthday dinner and it was wonderful. Both food and service were great. They have the very best pasta red sauce I’ve ever had in a restaurant. 5 star Yum!
Great place. Food was fabulous!! Service great too
Outstanding!! My girlfriend and I went here for the first time and can not wait to return. The staff was very welcoming and provided great service.
We started with the octopus and the meatballs. The tomato sauce for the octopus was quite flavorful and complemented the rest of the dish well. The meatballs, which are the chef’s grandmothers recipe, were delicious and an absolute must have when you go there. We then had the carbonara and rabbit gnocchi, both of which stood out to us. The carbonara had just the right amount of pepper in the pasta itself and the guanciale was cooked perfectly. As for the gnocchi, I would buy that sauce by the quart if they sold it and put a straw in to drink it.
The next time that I have a craving for quality Italian food, I will return to Forcella!
Indoor dining looked cramped with diners elbow to elbow, so we sat in an outdoor patio in front that was extremely pleasant, well spaced out, view of the city and North End. Salad was quite ordinary but duck entree was excellent. But service was unsmiling and unfriendly, and the overall goal seems to be to get you in and out in about an hour to turn the table over as quickly as possible. No drinks before dinner, no coffee or dessert option after dinner. As soon as you finish your entree the check is there and you’re out. Two courses and we were out in 60 minutes. So for a quick, very good meal, an excellent choice. But don’t plan on making an evening of it.
Good place. The staff forgot about us and we waited for about 20-30 min while they served people who came in after later than our party. However once they figured out that we had been neglected the service was good. Would definitely go back.
Really nice experience, great food, service was good too! No dessert or coffees but we wandered elsewhere for that and it was fun!
TripAdvisor reviews are most helpful and I use them quite often with very rare disappointments in my selections. Last night, however, was one of them dining at Forcella. We had a courtyard reservation but it was 54 degrees, windy and light rain. The night before Boston had record breaking wind and 3” of rain, with a a 40 degree drop in temperature. We Asked for indoor seating, and were brusquely told, “…nothing available”. No mention of a possible later time indoor seating, simply “no”. We Went to the courtyard and asked for one of the gas heaters to be lit. “We can’t.” I asked why and was told they had no propane?! On all of their heaters! Every other restaurant we walked by that evening, had them wonderfully lit. The Forcella courtyard is shared by an adjacent restaurant. There was a party of six seated next us and they were quite raucous and rude. We discretely asked our server if the other diners could be asked to temper their loudness. We were told they were diners from the adjacent restaurant and they could not say anything to them ? Dinner…caprese salad was mediocre with the smallest mozzarella portion I have ever had. A Meatball side order was rather tasteless, at best. Other Menu items? There was No lasagna, no ravioli, no veal and only 1 or 2 pasta selections. 1 Seafood selection…in Boston? Wine? We asked for Chianti, please. There was None on the menu. All in all, a very disappointing experience. In a highly rated Italian restaurant, I would need to hear some very compelling reason for me to return.
Hands down best Italian in the north end! I can’t wait to go again. Service is also incredible.
3/4 dishes were fantastic! The risotto of the day, however, was in a pool of liquid and missing the cheese! I didn’t feel comfortable sending it back because already the chef said we couldn’t order appetizers while we waited for our late guests to arrive. The chairs are uncomfortable and the noise level was crazy, but we’d try it again outside. They were super understanding about our late guests and brought yummy bread while we waited.
Food was outstanding, cool spot, great atmosphere. Staff was kind and courteous. Food was reasonably priced in my opinion
Weird they don’t have desert but food was so good
Beautiful patio courtyard dining in the north end. Great food and service. Forcella a gem!
Will not be returning to Forcella. Expansive, extremely small portions.
Wow! Party of six we all loved our meals! We had steak special, duck, lamb, linguine pesto (2), and rigatoni americano.
Everything was delicious. Great service loved the back patio…
we will be back soon!
Service was spot on- the best we’ve experienced in awhile. Kudos to them considering we’re in the new Post pandemic world.
Great service and food
Food was terrific. Atmosphere and locations closest thing to being in Italy.
Our first post-COVID outing and it was wonderful. The back patio was delightful and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend the seared sea scallops on pesto risotto.
Food was great, waited for a while to get our check after having our plates cleared but was otherwise lovely!
They have a great outdoor seating area tucked behind the building, next door to Paul Revere’s house. The area is beautiful and the staff was extra helpful in choosing a wine. Our server brought out three different ones for us to try. We had the Salmon and the chicken dish, I don’t remember the names, but the food was excellent. I will definitely recommend Forcella to friends and family.
One of the best restaurants in the NorthEnd. Highly recommend
Very tasty great outdoor dining. Loved the pasta with sauce and speck
