Two of us went to Forage for a special fixed menu dinner with wine pairings. My guest described the restaurant as her favorite in Cambridge after this occasion. The meal was spectacular. The wines were wonderful. The service was fantastic. We happily passed away three hours while dining without feeling as if time had passed at all. It's a small, cozy restaurant with a friendly, helpful staff that serves very interesting food. Go there!
Forage has reliably interesting and tasty cuisine. The wine selections and pairings when offered are described lovingly and well priced. Highly recommended.
We had the pre-fixed Vegetarian options. Some unusual preparations, but all were exquisite, and paired with excellent wine tastings. We were so impressed that we added on a gift certificate for a foodie friend of ours, who we think will love it, too.
This is a restaurant that focuses as much on their sourcing of ingredients as they do on the quality of the dishes prepared; all top notch. The menu is inventive and the dishes wonderfully complex in flavors and preparation. Portions are generous. Excellent bar with many small batch or artisan distiller products. Thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Unfortunately there was nothing outstanding about either the food or the service. The ambience is very nice, but for the price I expect a little more polish and impressiveness in the food and service.
Great night at the Bar at Forage. Food was great. Wines and cocktails really interesting and the owner & bar tender enthusiastic, entertaining and attentive. We’ll be back.
Forage had very good, locally sourced, tasty food. Mussels and especially the tomato broth was incredible as was chicken and Thai fish dish. The wait staff was properly trained and attentive and floor manager of highest quality for service and customer related attention. They even offered a nice complimentary lovely homemade ice cream as a happy ending after we decide to forego dessert. The main issue of night is the seating is very close and after arriving at 6:45 a couple seated next to us had a 7 month old that screamed and squirmed throughout our dinner. Rather than realizing how disruptive the child was, the new parents continued on with their dinner assuming the rest of us were perfectly accepting of their baby's struggle and its obvious requests and need to go home for rest. Always unfortunate for patrons, staff, and even clueless parents when trying to eat formally in a very nice and intimate restaurant. Obviously, nothing the establishment could really do as trying to show level of tolerant for their patrons, but kind of imposing on what could have been a GREAT evening date night. We raised to children. Took them to restaurants but knew to go to the earliest seating and leave (at least one of us) when baby is unhappy or stressed. We pre-planned and had exit strategy if evening soured with jr. I think these parents and others would be better served to pick a different style of restaurant for their Friday night outings or have a quick hook and plan to leave if baby goes south after a long work week for all. Good Luck Forage and probably best to pay closer attention with customer with infants and very young children and to be sure and ask clients if they mind being seated next to a baby for their Friday night - after 7pm dinners as we would have been happy to be seated elsewhere though we know you didn't have many options given busy night.
First time- 2 of the 4 of us are gluten-free and vegan- several unique and different options that were well received- we had a lovely evening- staff- food- noise level- great for dates- romantic dining- or the hard of hearing. We will be back.
A friend and I both had the special Tuesday wine menu, which was great fun and a wonderful value. Although one of the five wines I found off-putting, even that was a beautiful failure (an exotic gem that just wasn’t to my liking). The person who served as sommelier (whom I think may be a co-owner) freely shared his knowledge without being pretentious or overbearing. The food was simple but inventive (including, for example, lightly cured Arctic char served with julienned celery root). This is a terrific neighborhood spot with a funky vibe.
Great meal--it made us which we had tried out Forage sooner. Roast parsnip was great, really inventive, with a wonderful marmalade and sheep cheese on toasts. Hanger steak was terrific, with a tasty kale side. Overall, a great experience--we'll definitely be going again!
Had high expectations based on reviews. We had tasting menus and overall disappointed in quality of main dishes, amount of food in dishes and the wait in between courses was unacceptable, they felt so sorry they poured us a free glass of wine. That ruined the experience. In addition the little things like the person taking our plates and silverware between courses dropped them twice, they laid the silverware out wrong (a bit anal, but details are what make good restaurants) and we hardly saw our waitress. Would not go back. Would have been 2 stars but price for number of courses was good.
Just okay. Appetisers were hard to pass around
Flavor combinations were unexpected and delicious- like mussels in Sherry and parsnip marmalade. Outstanding food and lovely service.
It was awesome. As Always stan and Eric are amazing
Amazing food! We end for the Lobster Dinner (with wine pairings) and were amazed with the creativity and flavours that we took in.
This restaurant is a neighborhood treasure. The kitchen is constantly exploring new directions and the results are almost uniformly great. One exception: the seafood stew. Recent embellishments have improved it somewhat, but the liquid portion remains watery and bland.
Forage never disappoints, I love that you can get a vegan, vegetarian or omni tasting menu here. All the wines and courses were fantastic and the service was exceptional.
As always- a delight.
Creative, fresh fare, thoughtful surroundings, friendly and gracious service. Just what I hope for in an evening out. Thanks so much for doing what you do so well.
Consistently good food and excellent service. Its a tight space and gets noisy but you just need to be flexible.
This is my 3rd or 4th review of Forage, and the reviews are a bit repetitious because Forage is very consistent. We have always gone on a Tuesday evening for the prix fixe dinner with wine pairing; this review is of the November 13, 2018 dinner paired with unusual Austrian wines (no Gruner Weltliner from the Wachau at this dinner!). As always, great service in a comfortable environment, attractively plated food with flavor combinations that are unexpected but never weird, and wine pairings that are an education as well as a pleasure to drink. If I have any quibble, it is that the rye berries in the third course were bland, a very unusual lapse for this restaurant but a minor quibble indeed. Bottom line: we love this place and will keep coming back.
It was one of the best date nights we’ve had all year. The four course tasting menu was amazing. The wonderful service was the cherry on top. Highly recommend.
Excellent food, excellent service, knowledgeable bar staff, cozy yet tasteful ambiance. New favorite for me.
We've already had dinner at Forage several times and will certainly be back and back. High quality and creative food and wine menues in a relaxed setting👍
When here with my parents and boyfriend I got the vegetarian entree which was pretty good but could have used more flavor. My parents got the fish stew which they said was pretty good but could be better. My significant other got the spaghetti with meatballs and loved it. We shared an appetizer of mussels which was great and the bread there's from Iggy so it's Top Notch. Overall this place could have better food but the service and atmosphere is lovely
We loved Forage! Foremost the staff were relaxed, friendly, and professional, setting a positive, relaxed tone for the evening. Having been to other restaurants in East Coast cities, I still find Forage to have an outstanding kitchen, variety and inventiveness, for a very reasonable price.
My vegetarian 4-course meal was $49., and my husband's carnivore meal was $69. Everything was delicious and carefully, beautifully prepared. I would say, personally, that the carnivore menu was way too heavy on protein. Some vegetables would have been appreciated. Pate, mussels, meat - my husband loved it! I chose the vegetarian only because I didn't want the heavy meal, not out of any dietary restrictions.
Absolutely of note was the dessert! They served vanilla or lemon semifreddo - well! - often that can be a little chalky or bland, but theirs was sliced in thin wedges, with sweet-covered nuts, then topped with lemon grass-infused maple syrup. Enough said about their inventiveness - and deliciousness. I recommend Forage - go!
I am an omnivore and my husband is a vegan. We were both able to have a fantastic tasting menu experience at Forage for our 18th wedding anniversary. The decor at the restaurant is as warm and inviting and the restaurant had happy conversations bubbling throughout the space. We were impressed by the inventive cocktails and each of the courses of our meal were a work of art. Our appetizers ranged from a delicious carrot salad and colorful radish rings topped with warm tofu and wild mushrooms to a full charcuterie plate and mussels in a white wine sauce. My husband was able to enjoy delicata squash and mixed veg for his entree and I had pork with homemade cornbread that was out of this world. I can't recommend Forage more highly - definitely worth a visit!
Very fine food, tho my friend did not think that her fish stew was stellar. Great ambiance. My only complaint was the noise level, tho we avoided it by eating at 6pm. Also, the seats against the wall , on a bench, needed cushions to make them comfortable. Wait staff extraordinarily nice, tho they came around a bit too often. I would highly recommend it. It was 4.5 stars.
What the quality of food failed to deliver, this well-managed and cozy restaurant has more than compensated for by the politeness and attentiveness of the reception, waiting and managerial staff. They are all personable and responsive to our needs, very perceptive when we disliked some of the dishes and without our asking, generously took the charge off our bill. We naturally appreciated the gesture, but would rather the chef got our constructive criticism so that we can give it another try: please use much less salt in the food preparation. I also compliment the care with which wine has been chosen to pair, but would respectfully with some of the choices - but that should be just a matter of individual taste and speaks nothing about the creativity and skills of the wine or food management of this gem of the neighborhood.
I recently enjoyed another stellar Tuesday night wine dinner at Forage. Each of the courses are perfectly paired with a regional wine; this time it was the Piedmont region. The cheese course featured a 2006 Barolo, yum! Service is friendly and impeccable.
Interesting flavor combinations. Ask to try the porcini vermouth
Fresh and sublime. A little louder than I wanted, but will definitely make this restaurant a regular spot.
Nice menu, but some veggie items were undercooked — seems like kitchen was rushing to keep up on a busy evening. Also a bit noisy for relaxed conversation in the back room.
Stepped into this restaurant and immediately loved the ambiance--warm lighting, cozy seating and pleasant staff. I was thrilled to experience a tasting menu specifically with veganism mind. It was good, but I think they can continue to explore and enhance. The roasted vegetables and the carrot salad were the highlight of that menu. Delicious Chocolate Nemesis!
My spouse and I go to Forage for special occasions. We are vegan and love that Forage has a fully vegan tasting menu. There are very few places vegans can go for food of this caliber. The cocktails are top notch as well!
Their special mushroom dinner, with wine pairing, was spectacular. The Porcini Pakora was amazing, and the Black Trumpet Pavlova was to die for. My husband and I were discussing how soon we would attend their next wine dinner before we even left the restaurant.
Went here for my wife’s birthday and had a fantastic meatless Monday. Every course was lovely, the price was right for a date night, and the drinks were also delicious.
Awesome food! We had the vegan and vegetarian tasting menus and every plate was awesome. The wine tasting is worth it!
It was good, but not amazing and for the hype and prices I expected more.
This restaurant is truly a neighborhood gem. The dining area is small which makes it more intimate and tucked down in the lower back level of a building off a side street in busy Harvard Square. The food is excellent, and the price for Cambridge quite reasonable. We have now gone two Sundays in a row for their fixed price menu. Last night we both had the salad for an appetizer and my husband kept stealing off my plate once he woofed his down - and it is substantial for an appetizer - last week I had the vegan sausage. I am not vegan, nor vegetarian but it sounded very interesting and I was not disappointed. For the entrees we both had the fish stew. The broth was unbelievable and the fish was cooked to perfection. I repeated from last week unlike my husband who had the eggplant dish the week before - he loved it as well. We could have stopped there but of course the last course was dessert and we both had chosen different dishes but we never did get to try each others because again, we both coveted our own - that's how good they were. The service was also wonderful - not overbearing but just the right touch. I hate for more people to find this hidden gem - I want to keep it to myself - but I also want them to stay in business since it is such a rare find in Cambridge.
Delicious food with creative seasonal plates. This place never disappoints. The service is even better and the crew that runs the place is so fun and loves what they do. It's always a great time when dining at Forage!
