Fonda - East Village
One of the best bottomless brunches in the city. Great food, strong drinks and perfect service!
This was a new one for us, chosen simply on a hunch and because we felt like Mexican. Little did we know that we would find an authentic Mexican here on Ave A. The minor criticism was that a spicy guacamole was not really all that spicy, but it was very tasty and freshly made. I liked the carnitas I had afterwards, and the sopa de tortillas was excellent. An experience soon to be repeated.
Restaurant is amazing. Their brunch food options are delicious and their drinks are endless. Was a problem they sat us by the door and allowed 20 people to just crowd the area. I had three peoples butts on me at one point.
Been wanting to try this place for a while as it's in the neighborhood, and so glad we did. It has the appearance of a dive bar from the outside, and indeed there is a loud, lively bar scene in the front, but the cozy table for three we were given just past that was much quieter and relaxing. The host was kind to seat us early when due to change in plans we arrived an hour and a half earlier. The staff in general was very kind and solicitous all throughout. A lot of teamwork and they really seem to care about you. Service is very leisurely and does not hurry you which was fine for us but I notice other reviews see this as "slow", so keep that in mind if time is an issue for you. We started with the excellent guacamole, made fresh in front of us, wrapped in tiny tortillas and tried the Rosalita marguerita which was tasty and topped with hibiscus flowers which were intriguingly fruity but tasted a bit gritty at the end. Our entrees were presented attractively and were nicely prepared for the most part. The steak entree came with a wonderful, buttery, mushroom corn sauce that I could have eaten a giant bowl of all by itself! The salmon with machamanteles mole was less successful for me. The salmon was very bland (it came medium rare as requested, but just wish the outside had more of a char), and I did not care for the clove scented pureed fruit sauce that accompanied it. Nevertheless, we had a great experience and I would definitely return to try other dishes sometime soon.
I’ve been to this particular Fonda many times. My family and have always had great meal. Their service is top notch. Especially Rosy, she is very attentive and knows the menu inside and out. The food here always seems upscale. The dishes are delicious and there seems to be something on the specials menu that is to die for. Drinks are strong and delicious. My perennial favorite is the hibiscus margarita. My favorite dish is the beef with mushrooms. I’m not a mushroom fan but there is something about this dish that makes it so savory. I’m so glad I live in the area and can frequent this place regularly. It really is a gem.
The food was fine but the service left a lot to be desired. I made a reservation to celebrate my Wife’s birthday and called two days before to confirm the res.
On the day, we checked in with the host as our full party was not yet there (the restaurant is near only one subway line which ran with delays on Saturday) and they asked us to wait for the rest of the party to arrive - totally fine. 7 minutes later when we were all gathered, the host warned me that they had another reservation coming at 3pm - we were booked for 1pm. Again, totally fine if they were well booked for the day, but the tenor of the request rubbed me the wrong way.
Throughout the meal, the service was quite poor. We ordered spicy and medium guacamole but definitely received the mildest version, which had no taste. It was completely devoid of any acid or sodium. Alternatively, I ordered two margaritas and both time requested them without salt, but the rims were literally dripping with salt, which we used to try and save the dubious guac.
As we were finishing the meal around 2pm, the bus staff cleared our plates but also our place settings, which is an awkward process when everyone was still drinking and chatting. Had the server asked, we may have ordered some more food, like dessert, but we were afforded no such courtesy. The serving staff was not rude, but also was not especially welcoming, despite all my efforts to do my part as the reserved party.
Overall, food and cocktails were outstanding, definitely in a higher league from what most Mexican restaurants serve. We had 6:30 reservations (for 3) and I noticed happy hour goes until 7pm. The restaurant was only half full. Service was also slow. When we were seated I asked if we could order happy hour drinks at our table and the waiter said no. I was disappointed with this. Everything was a bit pricey. We all ordered from the regular menu, ordered 2 cocktails each @ $13 (the house hibiscus cocktail was loved by all), shared 1 guac/chips (thin, crispy and very tasty chips - guac was excellent) and 3 entrees that were all delicious. No coffee/dessert. We split the bill: $70 each.
The Sopa de Tacos was divine (I think I spelled that correctly). The broth was rich and flavourful. The Margarita was among the best and the rest of the meal was wonderful and the service was excellent
We were super lucky - we were seated up front where the noise level was bearable. The service was great. The food was fine - not amazing - but then again most people are going to brunch there for the open bar.
Would like to try it again for dinner!
I honestly was not impressed and the service was absolutely terrible and there was no one around to ask questions or see if we could change out a drink because It was poorly made. I really don't think I would come back for dinner.
Went to Fonda for a birthday dinner. Great food and drinks! Enjoyed the dinner, but the table set up, a small U shape, for our party was awkward and a very tight squeeze.
Our experience at Fonda was enjoyable. Every part of the meal was delicious and the service was impeccable. The temperature of every course was perfect and the drinks were made very well.
I will recommend this eatery to friends/family.
Amazing restaurant, great service and prices.
Good food, good service and good environment
You can’t anything more
the host / manager gave a lot of attitude, ruined my experience
I had a reservation for a large group and the hostess was very understanding due to late arrivals (terrible traffic) so i really appreciated that but the service was ehh. We all ordered cocktails and the cocktails were very watered down so we were very dissapointed and ordered the tequila flights which were excellent. The food was great. The E. Village location is a bit small for large groups.
Great food, delicious margs, attentive but not overbearing service. Only complaint is that we had a reservation but they seated us at a high table near the bar when there were plenty of empty tables further back.
Poor service. Good food.
Great service and delicious food. Love the margaritas.
We had a nice meal here. The staff were very friendly and the cocktails were good. The guacamole is definitely worth trying!
Very nice staff- very accommodating to my party which included a toddler and a preteen.
Lovely friendsmas! Thanks for accomodating, food (especially the guac) and drinks (especially la piñata) were amazing!!
Horrible service. Not good for large groups or birthdays.
Overall great experience. Drink refills were slow at times but they’d bring multiple at a time if you requested it. Food was fantastic.
So fun! The food was amazing -- and the margaritas were strong! Went for bottomless brunch, but I definitely want to go back to try other things on the menu. The brunch selections were still great!
My husband arrived on time but I was late trying to get the kid to bed with the sitter there. When I arrived 30 minutes late I explained to the host and he was very understanding and sat us right away. The margaritas were really delicious and the guac was perfect. It took a bit to get our drinks because it was quite busy but that was the only hiccup. It's pretty loud because there were a lot of big groups there- it's not a quiet night out but the vibe is fun and the food is great.
Great food, great drinks, great service, definitely will visit again.
Amazing chips and guac! The food was fantastic even though they were relatively small plate. I got the Carne tostadas and had no complaints. The only issue for me was that one of the bartenders seemed to be a bit annoyed to be there while the other provided fantastic service to my friends and me. Overall, I had a great experience and would go back.
Service could have been better. Our water was always neglected and it took them forever to deliver one of our dishes. Food was amazing as always
This was one of the first restaurants I tried when I moved to Alphabet City in 2015, and I've kept coming ever since. I've only been for dinner, but the atmosphere is usually lively. The mezcal flight is great and the food is phenomenal. I'd recommend for anyone looking for fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine at a reasonable price (for NYC).
Outstanding food. Great service from top to bottom. Best Mexican in NYC!
The tortilla soup is fantastic! Art meets ceramic bowl, beautiful presentation! We thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal! Very good service! Thank you Fonda!
The food is authentic and well-prepared. No matter what we have ordered, everyone is very pleased. Only drawback is the high volume of the music that inhibits conversation--we usually leave by 7:30 for a theatre curtain and by then, the noise level is extremely high. We would never go there past 7.
We had a delicious meal at Fonda! The guacamole was incredible - highly recommend. The drinks and food were fun and so yummy. Would absolutely recommend this great spot!
Ambiance of the restaurant is nice and service was good...but boring Mexican food....guacamole was good, nice and spicy but our entrees were nothing special.
We are coming back to Fonda in the east village location after 2 yrs. we felt the quality of food dropped. Did the chef change ?
Been here 5 times. Every time the staff was on top of their game. The cocktails are always creative and made with care. The food this time was the best we’ve had (grilled shrimp over green rice & chicken with beans and salsa. ) and it was good before. It is a little loud because everyone is having a good time.
