Great food, great drinks, very good service. A little cramped and way loud. We should have sat outside but there was no availability.
The food continues to be excellent. Great service.
Great food. Very tasty, nice presentation, good combination of ingredients. innovative.
Some of the best Mexican food you can get in Manhattan. The mole is amazing.
Guac was OUTSTANDING. Everything very creative and delicious.
We were a group of 8 and had a great time. The food, service and cocktails were all excellent! Will certainly be returning.
Excellent service all around especially our waiter
Our server, Rose, was exceptional. The food was magnificent, the zarape de pato was one of the very best things I’ve ever eaten. Drinks were delicious, can’t wait to come back!!
Always a great choice.
I was really excited to try this place out but it just didn't live up to my expectations. For starters, the customer service is terrible! From the greeter, to the server, from the people cleaning out the table... horrific. Not even one person was friendly or went out of their way to provide good service. Now the food... decent, but nothing special. The drinks were okay but not enough to make me want to return.
Waited 20 minutes for waitstaff to come to the table, and another 20 minutes for drinks.
Fun, yummy, understaffed but the servers were so nice. Not their fault that things were slow and forgotten.
We had a nice outdoor dinner at Fonda in the waning days of summer 2021. We had queso fundido with chorizo, guacamole, carnitas, and fish tacos. We also had a cocktail and two nonalcoholic cocktails. I'd say the food was better than drinks.
There was nothing we had food-wise that was unexpected. Since many of the items came with tortillas, it's worth noting that the tortillas were all delicious, fresh, and bursting with corn flavor. I would not be surprised if they made them in house.
While there is nothing that was a revolutionary take on Mexican food, everything seemed to be right where it should be. We enjoyed the meal, and we'd happily return.
Fonda was great. Only negative in my review is that I arrived at 5:30 and had to prompt the waiter to show me the happy hour menu which was a little annoying since it says it goes until 6pm. Other than that, great margs and great tacos we split with a group before a show.
Fantastic and so fun.
Very pleasant dining experience. Guacamole was delicious. Enjoyed all entrees and delicious margaritas.
We live a block away from Fonda and have been regular customers there for a number of years. That’s why we were so surprised to have such a bad experience with the food and the service.
We had the guacamole to start which was very good as always. Our next course was the taquitos - we ordered both the chicken and the carne asado. The meat on both was so dried out that they were next to inedible.
The carnitas were also very bad. The pork was incredibly fatty and the chef had put so much herbs (thyme?) in the dish that that’s all we tasted. And you couldn’t put the meat on the tortillas because when you bit into the pork, the fat would pull the whole piece of meat off the tortilla.
We would have complained about the food if anyone had come by and asked us how our meal was. It looked like the waitress had too many tables she was responsible for and maybe that explains the lack of attentiveness. At one point, I didn’t have a plate or a fork and it took multiple requests to multiple people to finally get utensils.
I’m hoping that this bad meal was a one-off but the fact that both the food and the service were disappointing is disturbing - especially when we’re spending $150 on dinner. There are a number of other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood that are consistently excellent. I’m not sure how quick we will be to return to Fonda.
This place is like Mexican fusion, with some authenticity but mixed with other modern foods. If you are looking for 100% authentic, I would go somewhere else. The margaritas were okay and so was the food. They played some great music and the staff was excellent.
Great atmosphere, great food, warm and friendly service. It was definitely an excellent date night spot. One critique was that we sat outside right next to the front door, which wasn’t ideal but hardly detracted from my experience. I was satisfied with my experience.
The bar tender and server were so attentive. The drinks are strong and tasty! The food is fresh and amazing!
Fonda is located in an old wood building on 9th Avenue; the restaurant has ample interior and exterior dining space.
We enjoyed our meal but didn’t blow any of us away. We started with the guacamole which was too chunky and bland for our liking. They made us a grilled shrimp appetizer off menu which was appreciated. We also shared 2 pitches of red sangria which was tasty and refreshing.
Their brunch specials actually seem like a really good value since it includes 2 drinks. You can also order just the plate for $15.95 (which is what our 13 yo took advantage of).
My carne asada (pictured) was prepared with a mushroom sauce which was tasty and had the right amount of heat but it was not hot when it arrived at the table.
Our server was excellent. Definitely made up for some of the shortfalls on the food.
FYI 20% gratuity is included for parties of 6 or more. Fonda is a nice Mexican restaurant but there are so many other good alternatives in the area that I can’t see myself returning.
Wait staff missed some specifics of the order -but still great to be out in Chelsea.
Everything was great. My only complaint was that the bar area’s music was up way too loud. I get it’s the bar area, but there were only like 6 people in the bar area between the actual bar and the adjacent tables. I could barely hear my friend!
Otherwise, the food was amazing as always. Our waitress was kind and attentive!!
Staff was very attentive & helpful without being overwhelming. Food is top notch!
Great authentic Mexican food!!
We live in California so were unsure about trying Mexican cuisine here--but Fonda is exceptional. Higher-end ingredients and inventive preparations (both meat and veg), but still the ample comfort-food portions that hit the spot on a rainy day (and leftovers for lunch the next day!). Friendly and professional service, and a good vibe.
Amazing food and even better drinks. The hibiscus rosalita was delicious!
Something was going on upstairs — lots of screaming and it impacted our party. We could barely hold a discussion. Howling, deafening music — had we known we were walking into a disco scene we’d’ve gone elsewhere or sat outside. We love La Fonda in Park Slope and wanted to check this one out. Food was yummy although my daughter was disappointed in the vegetarian dish she chose.
Excellent food and service!!
This was my first time going there. The food, especially the guacamole, was delicious. Great dining experience.
Pricey food . Nothing spectacular
Great authentic Mexican food
First time to Chelsea location

What a great place to celebrate an anniversary (or any special occasion). Wonderful, creative, beautifully presented dinner, and terrific and kind service, as well. Thank you for a great celebration! Would recommend Fond Chelsea to anyone.
What a discovery in Chelsea. Delicious regional Mexican dishes and delightful staff. We'll be back to work our way through the menu!
This is the go-to for authentic, outstanding Mexican food. I had a wonderful birthday meal there and would whole-heartedly recommend Fonda as the best for Mexican food in NYC.
Margaritas were very good.
We eat at Fonda several times a year, especially for birthdays and other celebrations.
