Flour + Water Ratings and Reviews
We did 2 pasta tastings (1 vegetarian). The food was all very good. I'd have to say that the first pasta dish, beet chitarra with dungeness crab, romanesco & tarragon, was my favorite of the night, followed closely by the broccoli cappellacci dei briganti with baby kale &
broccoli relish (on the vegetarian menu).
Our wait staff was all so nice and attentive. I think we will be back at Flour + Water in the near future!
Flour and Water! What happened to you guys? Been dining with you since you first opened back in 2009, and have been my go to for pasta on a regular basis. This was my first New Year’s Eve dinner with you guys and was quite excited to take my date for her first time to F&W, and looking forward to this special night at one of my favorite restaurants and starting the New Year off with a bang!
First, I was a little disappointed with our table location being that I made reservations 30 days in advance and thought that 7:45 reservation would get me a good seat in the house. We were seated right in front of the expediting/server station and our table for two was pretty much attached to the table for two to the other side of us. This made for an unpleasant dining experience with servers and food constantly bustling back and forth on one side, and feeling like we were in the same dinner conversation with the couple next to us on the other side. I feel like I could be the wedding planner for the couple next to us as I know every detail of what and how they want their wedding to be in the upcoming year!(totes to them btw)
Second, the $125 tasting menu was overpriced for the quality and service I received that night. You would think for NYE F&W would come out with their best. The courses were good but lack the quality I usually get from my regular dinners there. Service was mediocre at best, waited a good 20-25 minutes between our first course and second course. Then we got our fourth course soon after we received our third and felt rushed to eat both before our final course arrived. Overall F&W, I was disappointed with the NYE experience that you put out for me. You are one of my favorite restaurants and I know you can do so much better than this. I can only hope my next experience with you will regain my confidence otherwise I will have to let you go...
A lovely evening and the pasta was on par with the house-made pastas you find at restaurants in Italy. The only negative: the restaurant is small and reservations seems to fill quickly, so it took us a couple of weeks to secure a reservation at a desirable time.
I continue to love the food (which is fantastic) but feel like the service has gone down in recent years. Our hostess was friendly but our waitress was extremely aloof and tried to convince us not to order specific dishes because it would be a long wait - in the end it turned out to be a normal wait time and we were happy to try and have conversation while we waited. Unfortunately the music was so loud we could hardly hear our friends across the table. The food is amazing but it's almost not worth it to spend the money for this type of service.
A fantastic dining experience is the sum of many parts ... food, staff, decor, sound, plating and so much more. The food at Flour + Water was, as always, delicious (we had the pasta tasting). It is served family style, which means that the food is scooped onto the individual plates so the beautiful plating is quickly lost. The wine pairings were perfect. Why, then, only three stars overall? The restaurant was unbelievably loud because the music volume was cranked up so high (and remained so even after we asked them to turn it down a bit). The wait staff explained each course and wine pairing, which was great, but, to be honest, we couldn't hear a word they said so we nodded politely and then consulted the menu to see what was before us. Even the young members of our party complained that their ears were in pain and ringing when we left. While we thoroughly enjoyed the food, the overall experience was very unpleasant - not a desirable outcome for a family outing.
I was so happy to have finally a reservation at Floor + Water but the overall experience was very bad
We were running 10 minutes late, and tried to call to let them know but nobody was answering the phone. When we arrived, we have been told we will have to leave the table in one hour and fifteen minutes. Nice way to welcome customers!!!!
We ordered salad, pizzas and pastas and they were just ok. We didn't finish the dishes which is very unusual. Two desserts were good but mine, a carrot cake was at least one day old.
Please, avoid Flour + Water. there are so many good restaurants in San Francisco!
Food and ambiance were nice. Very loud (music blaring) and not good for those looking for a quiet dinner, or anything close. Food was great. Service was underwhelming. It took 20 minutes for a bottle of wine during the first service of the night and there was an aura of attitude between the 5 or so folks that served our table. Could have done without that. Overall, would recommend.
Flour+water is one of my favorite restaurants - was pretty lucky to get a reservation the day before. We arrived 15 minutes prior and was seated right away. Our server was very polite and patient since we took some time to go over the menu.
Having been here once, one of the most memorable dishes I've had here is their scarpinocc with balsamic glaze, and I was a bit disappointed to not see it on the menu. Our server was great and asked the chef to make an order for me - so delicious. We also ended up getting the halibut crudo (delicious with fennel shavings + aoili), pappardelle with lamb (tender!), and uovo pizza (the egg was a great touch). For dessert, we had the pistachio panna cotta (more milky than creamy), gelato, and affrogato (espresso and gelato, what's not to love).
The experience was great from start to finish and the staff was attentive/polite. Can't wait to go back again :) Thanks flour+water!
Absolutely love this place! It's been a while since I've been back because I've moved out of the neighborhood but I saw a reservation and had to snatch it along with a couple other reservations for the month since there were friends visiting - a good excuse for one of the best pasta places in the city, in my opinion. Not only is the food amazing but the staff is very friendly and sweet. The vibe is warm and welcoming and sets the perfect cozy scene. The wine list is on point and was pleasantly surprised to find a Montepulciano on the list - one of my favorites. It paired well with the pasta dish that was recommended to us. Will definitely not wait so long in between visits here. Flour + Water is a treat!
The pasta just ok, pizza better. The whole envoirment can tell too noisy, we need to shout to talk, also too dark can't see the food and menu. Some pasta quite hard, overall experience not interesting. The sauce also not what I expect. I prefer food taste more important. At least I try once in here.
The pasta tasting was delicious and the service was amazing. Our waitress did an amazing job guiding our experience, explaining dishes and inspirations, asking for feedback, and keeping our table well manicured. A bit of a splurge $$$ wise, but worth every penny.
After waiting years to go to this iconic restaurant we were surprised by all the hype. The restaurant obviously caters to a young crowd that can tolerate music so loud you can't talk. The wait staff does a good job although there is no dress standard for them so some look like they dress down for the evening. We had heard the food was exceptional, but our selections were good not near what our expectations were. For example, great chicory salad with 1/4 cup dressing on the bottom, a thin crust pie so thin that it arrived soggy from the tomato sauce. The pasta entry was good, still not up to the expectations everyone says about their pasta. And finally the dessert a chocolate boudin was so hard that while tasty the texture was just too difficult to enjoy. Now your saying, well this guy is just a picky customer. Well this guy owns a part of a restaurant reviewed by the NY Times and Bon Appettie so I do know something about food. To bad it was my wife's birthday, we have been happier at Delfina's.
We were there Tue Nov 28th.
The service was super slow, we waited almost one hour between the appetizers and the main courses. It's fine if the place is overcrowded but it wasn't.
They asked us if it was OK to prepare the kids' order first (2 pizzas) so they could start eating earlier (they were super hungry). One pizza arrived, the other didn't. We got our appetizers, we waited another hour and our pizzas arrived but still no info about our daughter's pizza so we told them that if they forgot the pizza was OK no problem (our son shared his pizza with our daughter).
They didn't say anything about the pizza (if they were late or if they forgot it), when our dinner was almost at the end the pizza arrived in a box and they charged us when the bill arrived.
The food was good, the service not.
Terrible service- our order was screwed up and only 3 of our 4 appetizers made it. Only 3 of our 4 pizzas were likewise brought. What came was brought piecemeal so that some at our table were eating while others looked on... Finally, my plate was whisked away before i was finished...
Extremely disappointed with our experience. It took over an hour from first to second of 5 courses to be brought. When it did come it was cold and bland. Courses were very similar in taste and presentation. I’ve gotten more attention at McDonald’s. Paid for my friends dinners because I chose the restaurant and was too embarrassed to let them pay that much for such a disappointing experience. Additionally, the music was blaring, which could have been overlooked if we were satisfied with the food and service. We will not be back.
