What Insiders Are Saying
Flour + Water in the Mission will always be one of our all time favorite Italian spots.
We had the pasta tasting menu, and we loved every course! They bring one smallish plate of each pasta for each couple to share, and you might start off fearing you will not get enough food, but to the contrary every dish is so rich and bursting with flavor that both your tummy and your tongue will be well satiated. The wine pairings were creative and well chosen. Every course was a highlight, but perhaps my favorite was the duck consonsei with pickled beets and mission fig mostarda and horseradish. The toasted farro orrechiete were amazing, and will make a convert out of anyone who suspects they may not like whole-grain pasta. This is pasta at its best, drawing on tradition but not weighed down by it--and perfectly cooked in every instance. This is not just a meal, it's an evening's entertainment.
I've been hearing about this for some time and finally made a reservation - not only did it live up to the hype, but it was even more delicious than I could have imagined. 1000% worth it!
Had a great time, food was great. We did the tasting menu and it's value can not be overstated. I look forward to coming back and exploring the a la carte menu.
Pasta and pizza was delicious!
The music was very loud; it was difficult to hear people at our table. Not good for a date night or catch up.
Delicious cuisine in a hip, cozy atmosphere. The pizzas are creative and fun, but the pastas are a real treat. Pastas are moderately proportioned, so for a party of two, you might get 2-4 of the pasta options to share, but the food is filling and rich enough that one pasta dish each can certainly be enough. This is one of the best restaurants in SF, and that's tough competition indeed!
The music was just a bit loud and the waitstaff forgot to fire my pizza order. Everything else - pretty awesome.
The cool and unassuming decor and staff are outdone only by the exquisiteness of the food, of which the pasta dishes were the highlight. Much thought goes into the delicate flavors that play out in each dish and your only mistake is not eating there this very night.
Food was great. Service not as great. We got the price fixe so spent a lot of money. However when we finished our last course, the check came right away without being asked if we wanted any coffee.
Once again everything was great. The pasta is definitely the best in the city (and that is coming from someone who doesn't really eat pasta but my husband a big pasta lover... I just sample). It is cooked to perfection with that so "right" al dente bite and not overpowered by sauces, etc. We also had the heirloom tomato salad and the beet salad - both were good. The main course that night was the rabbit dish - also delicious. The wine list has plenty of good choices. The service was great.
Out of the ordinary Italian food. Great Wine List.
Food and the overall ambiance were great. Our server was attentive, but rushed us through our meal. We sat down at 9:30 and within 35 minutes had all our appetizers and entrees on the table. We were looking for a nice long dinner, but instead felt incredibly rushed. The place wasn’t even that busy - maybe that was the problem, but I had hoped a place which focuses on fine dining would be able to properly course a meal.
We got there at 5:30 for our reservations, and there was already a mob of people crowding around the door with babies and strollers. The mob of people didn't have a reservation, but we had to wait behind them to be seated.
If this is a typical Sunday night, I would suggest a hostess coming out and asking those with a reservation to come in first, and then those w/out line up. It felt chaotic, could have been easily resolved.
The hostess was nice enough, but made me feel guilty for asking her to explain the testing menu. She said "They'll explain everything when it comes out". I want to know before I order it. Over all the experience was 'okay'.
Great. Took my mom and girlfriend for dinner. Music was a little loud for easy conversation.
Best Pasta ever!
You like pasta? Go here. You like pizza, go also here.
It is worth trying Flour + Water when visiting San Francisco! The place is very busy and the service was very good. We ordered way too much food but we wanted to try everything. Had the Roasted Carrots and Little Gems to start and they were great. The Maiale Pizza, Cappelletti and Squash Tortelloni pastas were all delicious! The Budino for dessert was just right.
Great food, friendly staff. The music is noisy and there's just one bathroom and there tends to be a line for it.
Come with friends. Order all the pasta dishes to share. It’s some of the best in SF.
Soooo good. Very creative appetizers, excellent pastas.
Excellent restaurant, great value great food.Waitress also very helpful with wine.Only draw back on this place is the restroom was horrible
Remarkable flavours and textures by a very talented team of chefs. A buzzing atmosphere and younger crowd eat mostly pizza accompanied by quite a loud soundtrack. The tasting menu for a first visit is a must and makes the effort to get here well worthwhile. Go with it, it's pasta like you have never experienced before.
The best food I’ve ever had. Super amazing service. Really normal prices. And perfect portion sizes. Everyone should eat here at least once.
Outstanding, incredible food and service. Truly.
However, someone should be flogged for playing crap music at max volume, ruining the dining experience.
What a find this remarkable restaurant was! The service was outstanding but the food.....unforgettable!!! There were five of us and it was late so we decided to share some pizzas and pastas. The pizza margherita was as close to the pizza we fell in love with in Venice! We ordered two of the Taleggio Scarpinocc and Tagliatelle Veal Bolgnese and I am still dreaming about both. My favorite was the Taleggio Scarpinocc and I will definitely order that all to myself on my next visit there! It literally melts in your mouth! We ended up ordering more of the pastas! Make sure to make a reservation and prepare for a delightful evening!
Appetizers are good, pastas are so so. Personal opinion.
Incredible food. Service a bit slow and snobby.
At the end the waiters asked for more tips which sounds very unprofessional
Best food I’ve had in SF ever!! We tries everything as we had a large group. So much fun!
The service was lovely. They were so accommodating and kind.
Food was great service could of been way better but made the experience of first time dinning there not so great
Food was very good, but out table was right next to the kitchen and there was throwing of cutlery nonstop while we were there :(
Service was very nice, though.
Portions littte small. Little to pricey. Good but not overwhelming.
Everything is great
Food was brought out rather slow, and server stated we needed to order all at once not being flexible as other restos allow.
Noisy, small portions of food and ridiculously expensive!
I’m surprised that their rating has gone down in Yelp. After a second visit, I find their pasta equal to that is Sicily and delicious. The staff is attentive and professional. While we waited for our table (friends were a little late), the hostess suggested and took our drink orders so we wouldn’t have to fight for elbow room. We tend to come during Burning Man week as it’s easier to get day of reservations. They also have a great wine list and the desserts were yummy! It’s def a treat to come here.
One of the best meals I’ve had this year. Simply incredible!
We were totally unimpressed. We heard so much about this restaurant. Food was average. Service poor. Deserts were good.
The food we had was really good, but the meal was spoiled completely by the noise level, which was horrible. We couldn't hear ourselves talk, let alone the servers. The loudness of the "music" actually hurt our ears. I would never go there again.
