Flour + Water in the Mission will always be one of our all time favorite Italian spots.
Fabulous! We did the tasting menu which was delicious. They were even able to accommodate my cows milk allergy without batting an eyelash - I was prepared to just sit some courses out but they offered a substitute that was super yummy. I will definitely be back.
This restaurant was really a great experience. The different pastas were ALL on point, and so delicious. The atmosphere was lively and fun, with great music and a good vibe to the whole place. Looking around, everyone seemed to be having a good time - I know we were. Highly recommend!
Hip with fun music and yummy comfort food. Pizza and pasta. Vegetarian options too.
9th anniversary dinner pasta tasing was to die for! So happy we finally got to eat there!
We were visiting from
NYC , been looking forward to this meal, lived up to every expectation. Our sever was enthusiastic and had great energy.
Flour + Water Anniversary
One of my favorite San Francisco restaurants. It is always delicious. The appetizers, the pastas and the deserts are amazing!
Way too expensive for what it is and the servers are "too cool for school."
Service was exceptional. Food presentation was beautiful. The actual flavors of most dishes in the tasting menu (family style, FYI) didn't appeal to me personally. But my husband loved it and ended up with most of the dishes. We ordered a pizza and the server strategically placed it in its proper space within our tasting which was greatly appreciated and was honestly the highlight of the meal. That and the bread. I wouldn't rush back. This was quite non traditional pasta but I had read enough reviews to expect it to be that way.
Came here to tread my mother to a special dinner before she left to go back abroad the following day. Upon arrival at 6pm we were told we had the table to 7:45pm. At 6:35pm the bill was placed on the table, not asked for and at the same time dessert was served. We were planning on ordering more drinks but were hurried out despite other tables being empty. We did not finish desert as the waitress was hovering for us to pay.
My mother ended up having to finish her drink by the door. I was very upset and felt that were both were descriminated against for some strange reason as no other diners had the same issue. Again we were told we had the table till 7:45pm, but were rushed out 40 mins after arrival at 6pm.
Excellent food! there were 3 of us and we shared a salad and the seared cod for appetizers. Then had the margherita pizza (good thin crust pizza, but not the best I have had in the area), duck ravioli, which was excellent with a buttery sauce and asparagus pasta which was creative.
Chocolate pudding for dessert, one was more than enough for 3 to share.
The pasta's were very delicious and creative.
Service was OK, could have been better for the price one pays. Very long wait times for tables.
The food was good - for apps, we had the tuna, cod, burrata and salami plate. For mains, we got 4 pastas - duck, clams, sausage and a red sauce. The service was just weird - our main server was helpful and accomidating to a dairy allergy in our group. it’s clear they absolutely think highly of themselves. When we were offered dessert menus, we were told we had 20 min left at our table, so up to us if we wanted to rush through dessert. It was especially awkward because there were at least 4 open tables all around us. With multiple apps, drinks and main dishes, our bill was significant so it felt especially petty to be essentially asked to hurry up to turn over the table. Classic example of a restaurant thinking they’re so amazing, but forgetting that manners are more important than menu.
The overall dinning experience for all of our party was very good to excellent
The only negative was that the music they were playing was too loud in a room with poor accoustics
It inhibited our conversation
Went here with my girlfriend for her birthday dinner and the food was amazing! We ordered three starters, two pastas and two desserts and felt comfortably full at the end. Everything tasted fantastic and we would definitely head back to try more.
Also while we were there they played the top 7 tracks off of Tame Impala's album Currents thus making the ambiance 10/10, so bonus points for that!
Celebrated a Birthday.
Good was excellent and service was great!
The food was amazing; not just to taste, but to look at as well.
As their name indicates, everything with flour and water in the ingredients, they do very well.
Not only was the stuffed pasta (we had the nettle one) well seasoned and delicious, but their bread was to die for. You have to actually order it, but it's worth it! Their super soft, warm sourdough was one of the best I've ever had.
The service was a tad spotty.
Some of the servers were very helpful in not only explaining the menu but also giving great recommendations, but others were kind of out of it and and didn't know the menu very well.
My biggest complaint was the ambience.
The music is WAAAY too loud, and I had to shout to be heard over the music. So not very a conversation-friendly environment.
And it is way too DARK. I had my contacts on, but could barely read the menu.
So if they could turn down the music a bit and dial up the lights, would be perfect.
This was our 2nd time at Flour & Water. The first experience was blow your mind amazing. We had the tasting menu and every pasta dish from squid ink to rabbit ravioli was memorable and exciting. This time around everything was tasty but few dishes made a lasting impression. We started with a rice ball amuse bouche that was crispy on the outside, creamy inside and pretty awesome. Next was a yellow fin tuna sashimi course was solid, but felt like something you could find on many menus.
The turmeric & carrot cappelletti with flower power, bee pollen & mission honey was intriguing and left us excited for the next course. Of the next 4 course, the salumi tortellini en brodo, which was a scrumptious tortellini in a sublime chicken broth was by far the highlight. The brilliantly seasoned broth was a near spiritual experience.
We also did the wine pairing which worked nicely and elevated the experience. Our biggest challenge was the service. We were sitting at the communal table and the service was knowledgeable yet brusque and uninterested. Definitely not what we had experience the last time.
All and all very solid food, perhaps our first visit set an unrealistic expectation and the winter menu was more appealing than the spring menu. We will have to try the summer menu and see which experience was more indicative of where F&W is headed.
Food too salty. The blasting music made conversation impossible. Not impressed.
Best overall restaurant in SF! Housemade Pasta & Pizza was to best I have ever had. All items on Menu are fresh and have amazing flavors. Cool, hip old world wine list. Great music playing in background. Not too loud. Team service was very consistent.
music was too loud - - - - miss old menu I recognize this encourages shared plates we did enjoy -
This was the best meal we had on our weekend trip to San Francisco. We heard about this place from mutual friends where we live in Chicago that have been here in the past. Great vibe and nice staff. We had the pea leaf arancini, clam and nduja pizza, ramp cresto de gallo pasta, and panna cotta dessert. They also let us have the strawberries and blood orange black pepper sherbert from the tasting menu.
Amazing - everything was enjoyable, the food, the music and ambience, and the service! Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a delicious Italian meal that isn’t too heavy!
I waited a long time to get a decent reservation date and I had heard so many people rant and rave about this place that I was so looking forward to try it but I wish I had saved my money instead. Everything we had was not very good except for the bread “which you have to pay for unlike at most restaurants” but at least it was good...very good. My wife had the vongole pizza and you could not even taste the vongole. Not enough of them in the pizza and overpowered by super spice whatever that souce was. My Aleppo sorprese dish was too al dente and and the fresh sweet peas too hard...not blenched enough or cooked enough and not sweet. A total dead appointment for us both.
I hate spending a lot of money on food that I don’t like and here in San Francisco we have too many options so I’m never going back.
I absolutely love Italian food and I consume it frequently. This restaurant had a wonderful selection of dishes and incredible service. The only part of the entire evening that was not appreciated was that we were charged $10 for 8 slices of bread. Quite ridiculous.
Food was unreal.
I absolutely love this restaurant. This was the second time I've been to the restaurant and I have been wowed each time. The restaurant does really well to take what is in season and bring out the flavors with innovative dishes.
The tasting menu and pairings were outstanding, the servers attentive, knowledgeable and friendly!
Flour+Water was exceptional! Also, there was a mix-up with my open table reservation, where my 7:30 reservation was switched to 10:30, though I never received a confirmation email about that. There was something wrong with the app at the time. Anyway, as busy as Flour+Water was on a Saturday night!, they accommodated me and my guest right away. I was so grateful. Our server/bartender was sweet and knowledgeable, attentive but not over bearing. The food was exquisite! We ordered the Wagyu Beef Carne Cruda and Asparagus Alla Carbonara to start, and the Black Garlic Campanelle and the Seweed Spaghetti as the main dishes. I can't say there was not a dish I wanted all for my own because it was so good! Oh and we got the lemon poppy seed cake for dessert. YUM!
My girlfriend and I were celebrating her birthday. We did the pasta tasting menu! Each dish was amazing. Pasta was so simple and perfectly executed. The salumi tortellini en brodo was heaven in a bowl! Their taleggio scarpinocc with aceto balsamico dish is a staple. I suggest the tasting menu. Won't be disappointed. They even put a candle for my girlfriend's dessert!
This place gets me every time. Always incredible food, unique wine list, and outstanding service.
Excelllent food, pasta and pizza were delicious. Servers are top quality, great wine recos. Best resto of 6 we did this week.
Do not do the tasting menu. Needs work here, definitely not a Michelin rated restaurant. Server was awesome but food was lacking.
I've been to F + W many times. The appetizer and pasta offerings were superb but I was disappointed to see that they've stopped offering main courses or vegetable sides. Somehow, the meal felt less substantial. I'm hoping that this trial run at a reduced menu ends soon. I miss their amazing fish!
Finally been to this restaurant after living in SF for 4 years. It was pretty much what we expected (we did the tasting menu); pretty good food and experience, but weren't totally "wow'd." The price for the tasting menu is reasonable. Very crowded and lively atmosphere, which I enjoy.
Flour and Water was our favourite restaurant in the 3 weeks we have been travelling in Canada and SAN Fransisco. The food was subtle and exquisite! Loved the playlist! Have it now on Spotify, and the service was just right! We want flour and Water in Perth!!!
Great pasta as always. Service was prompt and very attentive.
I didn't know pasta can taste so good until I came here.
Love this place!
We enjoyed very much the restaurant and we were positively surprised that the restaurant accepted a so late (10:45PM) booking.
The only issue is that as soon as we seated, the waiter told us that we should order asap because kitchen was about to close. My point is, if a restaurant accepts to attend clients so late, it has to have some flexibility when people arrive to give them, at least some time to see the menu, the wine list, and etc.
But the overall impression was very good.
