We'd had this restaurant on our list for a long time and were excited for our first experience. The halibut crudo and octopus starters were delicious, but pretty common dishes at other similar restaurants. The pizza had the biggest hype and biggest let down. The center of the pizza was soggy and overly chewy. Ingredients were fresh and flavorable, but texture-wise it was a dud. We actually got engaged after the meal, so I will always remember the experience. I gleefully announced we were engaged and our server seemed stunned - no congratulations, no offer to take our photo (thankfully the table next to us offered) - absolutely nothing. Pretty awkward. It didn't kill our happiness of course, but they missed an opportunity. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone or eat there again. There are way too many AMAZING restaurants to give this place a second thought.

Flour and alter exceeded my expectations. The staff was inviting and knowledgeable about he food and the Italian wine selection.

It’s commonplace in San Francisco to pay a lot for small portions for the sake of creativity or local ingredients. Flour and water balanced this approach so well. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion of our pistachio pesto and rutabaga pasta. The price was on point and we left our meal satiated but not stuffed.

Absolutely delightful. Props to the whole flour and water fam.

A dinner at Flour+Water is always a fabulous evening. The food is creative, original and timeless. The service is warm, helpful and attentive. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed and also special. They have great wines but (not surprisingly) most are from Italy and I’m not so familiar with wines outside of California. So, we asked our server to help us pick out a wine. It was lovely. Flour+water hits all the high notes perfectly— you can just relax knowing any evening at Flour+Water will be a wonderful evening. The salads and starters are bright and interesting. Of course, the pastas are the stars of the restaurant— they do just melt in you mouth, explosions of flavor, some big and some subtle— each one distinct and wonderful. It’s best to go two couples and share, so you can taste more of them. Also, don’t overlook the pizza— it’s the best pizza in the Bay Area— the crust has just the perfect amount of chew. The only negative about Flour+Water is that it’s quite popular, so even if you are interested in dining late it’s really difficult to get a reservation and if you try to just show up as a walk in you’ll have an exceedingly long wait. It’s best to plan weeks ahead and make a reservation.

Ambiance: Too noisy, loud music for a restaurant, you cannot hear each other.
Food: our food was too salty, don't want to have dinner at this place again

We try and eat at Flour & Water as often as possible. The food is nothing short of stellar and our only frustration is trying to decide if we should order off the regular or pasta tasting menus. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, plus the wine list is solid. Love this place!

For the price of the tasting menu (compared to similarly priced menus across the city) the amount of food was relatively small. I would have expected either more courses or larger portions overall. I would not recommend the tasting menu here based on this experience. The food overall was balanced and fresh. The service was not on the same level as other restaurants with similarly priced tasting menus, but I acknowledge the restaurant may have been busier than usual due to restaurant week.

Had 10:30pm reservations during SF Restaurant week and Flour+Water made the most of it!
I highly recommend the beverage pairing with your meal. Will definitely need to go back!

This is F + W's first foray into SF Restaurant Week. It was rocky. The food was top quality, but overwhelming in the pasta department. We enjoyed the salmon with radish as a starter. Then there were 5 plates of pasta. All in oil. No bread. No relief. I just wanted a little arugula or romaine, or maybe some of their famous cauliflower or spinach instead of one of the pasta dish. Maybe next time remove one of the pastas and serve a vegetable. Even the ice cream was served in olive oil. Tartine is just down the road. Maybe they could do some bread for you? It would have been so nice to put the sauces on.

While the food and service were quite good, the restaurant was freezing. For inexplicable reasons, the restaurant kept many windows and the back door open. Though we asked that one of the windows be closed and eventually wore our winter coats during the meal, other windows and the back door remained open. This discomfort made it difficult to enjoy our meal.

Hi, we were looking forward to coming in all week, & we were very disappointed. We ordered two of the pasta tasting menus with the wine pairing. We knew it was very pricey for pasta, but we knew that going in, & the restaurant was highly recommended by many people. All the wines we had were very good, a good amount for each of us & went very well with each course. Well the ones we could actually eat. The first two courses were very good, the appetizer with the sparkling wine & the beet chitarra with Falanghina. After that, all the other filled pasta courses were either under cooked(just before al dente) or overly salted, the tortellini al bordo was both. Also two of the courses we had to split at a very small table, which we thought was strange because some were served individual & some were not. We did tell our server about both of these concerns & was basically told, "well that's just the way we do it here". At that point we didn't want to stay for the dessert course, so the server took one of the tasting menus off the check, we paid & left, very disappointed with one of the most dissatisfying dining experiences we have ever had. At those prices, $75.00 per person, plus $55.00 with wines, ALL the courses should have been served individual, and we did order 2 pasta tasting menus, not one. As native San Franciscans & life long restaurant employees we thought the whole Flour + Water experience was very over rated.

Flour and Water was my first stop off the plane from NYC and had not been in four years! The food did not disappoint and I nearly licked the plates and bowls clean!! So happy to see the staff is friendly as ever and that the food has only gotten better!!

Flour+Water was phenomenal. I went for my birthday with a friend, and was totally blown away by the experience. The food is delicious, of course. The service was also outstanding. Having been in the food service industry in a past life, I was very impressed by the level of communication and care that the Flour+Water servers possessed. We had one minor mix-up where they gave us the wrong pasta. Before I could even say anything to one of the servers who was walking toward me, she paused and said, “I know, this is not your pasta. We are really sorry about that, but please enjoy it on us. Does anyone have any food allergies?” She already knew without me even having to say anything, literally within seconds! Such great service.

Overall a real treat, and am excited to dine here again!

The food and service was excellent!

The lighting was very dark, too dark for us (we were near the back and had to use our cell phones to read the menus). The music was too loud for intimate conversation.

Service was super rushed for no reason we were the last group probably seated and no one was waiting for a table. They kept coming to take our plates away before we were finished eating and food was served before we even got water wine or bread

We did 2 pasta tastings (1 vegetarian). The food was all very good. I'd have to say that the first pasta dish, beet chitarra with dungeness crab, romanesco & tarragon, was my favorite of the night, followed closely by the broccoli cappellacci dei briganti with baby kale &
broccoli relish (on the vegetarian menu).

Our wait staff was all so nice and attentive. I think we will be back at Flour + Water in the near future!

Flour and Water! What happened to you guys? Been dining with you since you first opened back in 2009, and have been my go to for pasta on a regular basis. This was my first New Year’s Eve dinner with you guys and was quite excited to take my date for her first time to F&W, and looking forward to this special night at one of my favorite restaurants and starting the New Year off with a bang!

First, I was a little disappointed with our table location being that I made reservations 30 days in advance and thought that 7:45 reservation would get me a good seat in the house. We were seated right in front of the expediting/server station and our table for two was pretty much attached to the table for two to the other side of us. This made for an unpleasant dining experience with servers and food constantly bustling back and forth on one side, and feeling like we were in the same dinner conversation with the couple next to us on the other side. I feel like I could be the wedding planner for the couple next to us as I know every detail of what and how they want their wedding to be in the upcoming year!(totes to them btw)

Second, the $125 tasting menu was overpriced for the quality and service I received that night. You would think for NYE F&W would come out with their best. The courses were good but lack the quality I usually get from my regular dinners there. Service was mediocre at best, waited a good 20-25 minutes between our first course and second course. Then we got our fourth course soon after we received our third and felt rushed to eat both before our final course arrived. Overall F&W, I was disappointed with the NYE experience that you put out for me. You are one of my favorite restaurants and I know you can do so much better than this. I can only hope my next experience with you will regain my confidence otherwise I will have to let you go...
