What Insiders Are Saying
Flour + Water in the Mission will always be one of our all time favorite Italian spots.
Flour + Water, good as ever! Always delicious food, great casual service, and a good time.
Excellent food and wonderful music selection
First off, believe the hype, the food is exceptional. We've been here many times and on occasion there is one dish which stands out as not insanely good, but most of the food here is stand out and the flavors spot on with depth. Really. The food is good. We've ot been for years-used to work nearby and pop in at 10 after the crowd, sans reservations. My sister gave us a gift card after hearing us rave about it and explain how we never went any longer, to encourage us to go back and enjoy it since it obviously made us happy. Gotta love an impulsive sister. So, years later, we made a reservation. Everything was as it had been in the past. The staff was very helpful in helping us make our decisions, but then the service felt rushed, not bad, just a little hurried; my last sip of wine was whisked away without asking (and, yes, it was a sip, but it was intentional and awaited), my dining companion had completed her meal and i was still savoring my pizza (which, really, you have to try their pizza), i placed a piece of crust down and there was someone offering to ox the rest-I grabbed my crust (did I mention that every ounce of crust is divine?) and let him box the rest accepting that it was better that way as I cold enjoy it for lunch, but still. Then, mere moments after my coffee was poured the check was put down. All of these things did not make me regret anything, because the food is fabulous, but it did make me never want to go here again before 10, when everything was truly everything that you could ever want from a restaurant, because while I could not get away from feeling rushed, the staff here really is top notch.
Delicious from start to finish. Will definitely return for a special occasion.
Had a great meal. Pasta is what they are known for and they did it amazingly well. The pizzas were great too.
First time at Flour&Water for the 4 of us. We ordered 8 dishes to share and get a good sense of the food. Appetizers,Pizzas, Pastas - all slightly unique and delicious. Only issue was the service, our waiter seemed disinterested and bored. Other than the first greeting, never said a word to us again. It became the running joke on our table. Fortunately, the food runners were great and explained the dishes nicely. We tipped appropriately because of them...they even thanked us when we left, as our waiter just grabbed the check and walked away.
One of the best pasta in SF, maybe the best.
Service here is always amazing! Food is fantastic and the menu changes. Servers are knowledgeable and very helpful walking you through it. Can’t wait until my next trip back!
Dishes were all delicious.
Service was welcoming
The four of us absolutely loved the ambiance, wood interior, excellent service and all the delicious dishes we ordered. Every meal had unique flavors, presentation and textures in our mouths. Yummy! We will be back soon.
The food was delicious and the service was delightful. It was a wonderful evening, and a great place to host a birthday dinner. Would highly recommend coming here! Next time, I plan to do the pasta tasting.
This place is very cute. Service was very good. We were greeted promptly at our arrival and seated right on time. Food however, lets just say I can find some better option nearby. Scallop starter was flavorful but very salty. Pizza was oooookay and pasta dish was same. Price is on better side compared to similar restaurants but considering the wait time of this place in Opentable, I wouldnt be dying to come back anytime soon.
Our third visit to Flour+Water in 12 months. We are 3 for 3 with the pasta tasting menu and wine pairing. Simply put Outstanding!
We really enjoyed the food. The asparagus alla carbonara was very good. I had the nettle & sunchoke caramelle, it was outstanding. She had the fungi pizza, it was good. I had the carrot cake for dessert it was very good.
The music was way too loud. We asked them to turn it down, which they did, but it was still loud. Otherwise, the atmosphere was fine. Service was fine. We didn't really see the waitress after the order was taken, others took care of us. I don't recall anyone checking how our entrees were. We had a 7;15 reservation, I called to come in earlier and was told no. However, when we arrived, there were a number of empty tables.
Food was overrated but good. Probably would not go again
Great pasta, good pizza, good wine selection and one of the worst service for the price you can get in SF. I would recommend only on a very slow day, where they don't have to rush you in and rush you out - like it is a fast casual restaurant (which it isn't).
Finally tried F & W pasta tasting menu and it was outstanding. The wine pairings were great but one or two could have been a bit more interesting. I’d go again in a heartbeat
Great food! We did the tasting with wine pairing and it was delicious!! The pastas and sauces were fresh, flavorful. The best I have ever tried. The service was excellent. I would come back anytime.
Celebrated our 29th Anniversary with flour+water. The meal and experience was a Top-5 all time for us. If you are even considering going here, do it.
One of my favorite restaurants in SF!
Truly delicious! I'd recommend ordering family style so you can try lots of different dishes - they're all so different and wonderful!
Amazing! This is definitely a place to experience and enjoy delicious and fresh food!
Everything was delicious. Service is good. A little loud.
After years of wanting to go, we finally made it happen. Fantastic food and wine. Server was wonderful. Can’t wait to come back.
This is a fantastic place- the BEST Italian dining I have experienced!!
But if an odd neighbourhood to find this restaurant in, but loved the energy in the restaurant. Food was amazing!!!
Birthday meal! Did the tasting menu with the wine pairing, and it was amazing. Would love to go again!
Overall had a great time. I wouldn’t recommend the tasting for the price - food was good but not worth the price. The dishes other tables got looked amazing so I will definitely do that next time.
Pasta was too fancy for my tastes
Always love Flour + Water! Great food, great wine, great ambiance.
The food was great. Phenomenal actually. The music was very very loud. The seats were comfortable enough.
amazing food, wonderful experience. we were glad we made a reservation - there was a long line of people when we arrived at 5:15 for our 5:30 reservation (on a Monday).
Food was great. But service at the table although ok felt rushed, like they had someone waiting to seat down. The unacceptable part was the attitude of the hostess. To be honest I don’t think I am coming back. There are too many great restaurants in SF to take this attitude for service.
It was as wonderful as I remember the first time was. To make up for a short wait prior to our meal, the chef sent out a small pasta tasting, which was great.
Very very meh. :( I was super disappointed we didn’t enjoy the food more... I went as a first time with my boyfriend who had been raving about his outstanding meal the last time he visited. We both left feeling a little confused... was this really flour & water? Everything was SO SALTY. We physically couldn’t finish our salumi board, or pasta dishes. Everything was so salty it made our mouths pucker.
We loved the squash aranccini- but everything else was pretty lack luster. My duck pasta was swimming in oil, and also very salty. I had very high expectations based on friendly feedback... but man. What a bust. Unsure if we would recommend or return.
Excellent food and service. Would definitely recommend
music was just a bit too loud. everything else was great.
It was disheartening after paying a $600 bill our waitress informed us there were a lot of people waiting and asked if we could leave ASAP. We had just signed the check and were not lingering super long. But it would have been nice to finish our glass of wine and conversation without being told to leave.
Delicious food, especially the pasta dishes. Unusual new addition was scallops -- fabulous flavor. Service was attentive and friendly; staff is always engaging and wonderful. A great place for food and enjoying the evening with a friend or friends.
We really enjoyed our dinner we were most pleased with the appetizers we had two delicious salads. The pasta’s were way too heavy in butter and cheese for us, it kind of overwhelmed the pasta We felt the same way about the pizza it also was really oily. The flavors were excellent just way too much butter and cheese for our liking. I would definitely go back for the salad’s and the wine list was lovely also.
