Eating in a food factory best describes our recent experience which will not be repeated.
This actual is a review of the New Year's Eve dinner at Hult's (it's last night). Food was a set menu--set selection from the standard menu. Service was great. Hope many of the waiters from Hult's also work at Flights. Sat in back corner of the back dining room. Way too dark and low ceiling made it hard to talk. Good luck to Alex for his new venture and I look forward to trying it after it opens.
We were expecting a nicer experience than we had but overall, it was good
As Hult's is going away to be replaced by Flights, this review isn't meaningful in some respects. In any event, after the disaster of Thanksgiving (well chronicled on Open Table), which dropped Hult's rating noticeably, I was really happy that everything was in good order for Xmas eve dinner. Food was the standard fare, but delicious. Service was prompt and attentive. Everything went well and thanks Hult's for a memorable dining event. Look forward to going back 1-2 more times before Hult's is no more.
Food was good. Service was not. Our waitress was brusk, mis-informed about the menu and very slow in attending to our table.
The food was amazing. Made accommodation for my 4 year-old-nephew. Our server was super helpful and funny.
We’ve been to Hult’s in the past and liked it. Unfortunately this experience made us leave before eating! The wine list only had 1 Chardonnay by the glass, a budget label they wanted $12 for. Not what we are used to. Something must have been wrong with the exhaust hood in the kitchen b/c the restaurant filled with smoke twice in the 25 minutes we were there. The front and side doors were open despite the 35 degree weather. Then the waitress only came by our table once, we weren’t quite ready to order yet. She didn’t come back. After 20 minutes waiting, we left and walked to another spot with a great wine list and service.
We're really going to miss Hult's. I'm sure the new format will be great, but the classy, special occasion atmosphere was a lot influenced our choice. No question the food is great too. Both of us had a wonderful meal with fine service.
Hult's has a pleasant ambiance, nice Christmas decorations. However, the food left a lot to be desired. Paying a hefty price for delicious food is one thing, but we left not satisfied with the quality of the food. Service could have been more attentive as well. We won't be back for dinner, but maybe happy hour.
Food did not come out over an hour after reservation, we had to ask and rush our food. Restaurant claimed that there was a big party, but kitchen should be able to accommodate that. We ordered a few more items after we were served and those entrees came out within 10 minutes! Makes you wonder... Food was descent, short rib was dry, fish smelled like it was about to be spoiled (returned), pork belly was salty, Elk was delicious as well as the dessert. Overall, it was good to try but I would not come back.
Food was disappointing- ordered 3 items and each dish was cream- laden! Overpriced!
Hults took the reservation but they are CLOSED. why would you do that?
We had an early Christmas celebration and wanted a restaurant with an "order off the menu" brunch and their selections were perfect for our group! We even enjoyed their bottomless Mimosas!!!
We've eaten at Hult's many times. Alexander Hult is the reason we keep returning. He is changing the restaurant over to Flights in January. We came in to have one last gathering before that happens. We wish him well!
Hult's in my favorite restaurant in all of Santa Clara County! I am deeply saddened that it is closing. I consider myself a foodie and expect quality menus. Their food is outstanding!!! I understand that Hult's will re-open as Flights! I like Flight's, too, but will miss the Hult's menu. I am going through withdrawal already and very sad. I, of course, will go to the new restaurant, but feel that Hult's menu was the best in the whole area. Thank you to the Hults and their competent staff for many delicious and memorable dining experiences!!!
I will be sad to Hult's go but looking forward to it becoming Flights. I am sure they are downsizing their staff and that was why there was a 40 minute wait for food. But I must say when it arrived it was yummy.
I made the reservation for a birthday brunch. The restaurant had many open tables. It was not busy at all. We had to wait over an hour for our food (an hour and ten minutes to get all plates for 6 people) to where all of the guests commented on it, while I was hoping they would notice. The food was mediocre and almost all of the plates were baking hot, making us think most of the food had sat under a heat lamp long after it was done. Many tables who came in after us had their food before us. The server did not come by once to assure us the food would be out shortly. I understand mistakes happen so just an assurance that our food would be out soon would've been nice instead of us sitting there wondering what had happened. Then we had to wait 15 minutes after requesting the check to finally get it. No mention by wait staff of the birthday. Very disappointed. I know the restaurant is closing, but the current clientele deserve more than that, especially for the price.
I went to Hult's for me and my girlfriend's anniversary. We had the tasting menu which is now $85 / person (the price wasn't written on their site and I had to ask). The food was really good, everything is what you would expect when paying so much for a meal. A lot of interesting takes, and a few surprises mixed into what you would normally expect. Such as macadamia nuts in ahi tuna poke, and the duchesse potato with the filet mignon. I think our favorite dishes were the scallop and pecan ravioli. The portions were what you would expect from fine dining, but the filet mignon at the end was quite filling.
The drinks were good for the most part although the cocktails were a bit too strong. Service was really good! Our waitress was quite attentive and our waters were constantly filled as well. I would go back again, but for it's price it would definitely be for a very special occasions and not just for date night.
Note: The washroom is quite accessible for anyone with those concerns, although the tables were a tad cramped.
We were at Hult's for Thanksgiving - as were many, many others. In fact, the place was overbooked, and they had to turn people (with reservations) away. I suspect the overbooking may not be their fault - perhaps the high demand from several different booking sites, such as Open Table, couldn't manage. Unfortunately, all the blame fell on the poor people at the restaurant, although they did everything in their power to accomodate as many as they could. They ran out of items on their menu, and therefore offered what they did have at half price. We gladly accepted, and everything was delicious. We really appreciated how hard they worked to make the evening a treat for everyone despite the circumstances, and we made sure to give the waiter a nice tip. We've been at Hult's several times before, and the food is always so delicious. We have two people with Celiac disease in the family, and we really appreciate the gluten free options. We will certainly be back!
Went for Thanksgiving 3course meal and they were out of most items. The owner took upon himself to allow the people with no reservations to also dine which depleted all the foods for people that had reservations. An nice dinner turned into a miserable dinner as most of the items were out.
This was without a doubt the WORST DINING EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD.
I don’t have time. No food horrible service st hostess stance. You routined my thanksgiving
Will never go here again.
How can you advertise special occasion and not buy enough food?
I had heard good things about Hult's and it was recommended by Goyot for Thanksgiving Dinner in San Jose. Since I could not get into my first or second choices, we decided to give them a try.
Neutral: The restaurant was very busy.
Thumbs Down: May have been short staffed.
Thumbs Down: Restaurant was very loud. I would NOT call this place a first date restaurant.
Thumbs up (by 1 minute): Seated within 14 minutes of reservation time.
Thumbs Down: Very poor service, waitress appeared disorganized.
Two Thumbs Down: If one goes, ask for a couple of sets of silverware at the beginning of the meal. When they remove the silverware, it takes forever for it to be replaced.
Neutral: Wine list was eclectic and had no sense of order. Poor selections, a surprise for Los Gatos.
Thumbs Down: Wine required two requests to receive after ordered.
Neutral: The food was mediocre.
Neutral: Kabocha Soup had potential, but was a little sweet.
Thumbs WAY DOWN: No spoon provided with the soup.
Thumbs Down: Swedish Meatballs dry. Gravy and Lingonberry sauces clashed.
Neutral: Braised Short Ribs slightly gamey.
Two Thumbs Down: Ran out of preferred dessert of Sorbet. (Who runs out of sorbet?)
Accidental Thumbs Up: Bread pudding excellent.
Neutral: Ambience was ok: kind of Old Steak House meet Contemporary.
Note: Hult's is changing its format/style as of the end of December 2017.
Neutral to Thumbs Down (based on experience): Total cost <$300 for two, three course prix fixe specialty Thanksgiving Dinner including an added bottle of wine and 10% (poor service) tip.
Thumbs WAY Down: Definitely would not return in the old format. Since ownership is not changing, probably will not try new format. Life is too short and there are too many better places for the money.
This was, hands-down, the WORST experience we’ve ever had at a “nice” restaurant. We came for the Thanksgiving tasting menu, and both the food and service were atrocious. The foot was awful - my husband’s meatballs were cold when served, and his entree, the turkey dish, was inedible. The meat was “turkey loaf,” and the sides were boring and bland. He literally equated the meal with Thanksgivings he has spent at a nursing home. The service was just as bad as the food. The hosts were frazzled and rude. Our server was terrible, complaining about how she had to work while her family was at home. She went to far as to say “I’m only doing this for the money” :-0 Even if that’s true, probably not the message to give your customers. The first course came out before the wine. When we finished out bottle of wine, someone came and cleared the bottle and my husband’s glass and didn’t ask if we wanted anything else. Then, after we finished with our main dishes, someone cleared our plates. 15 minutes later, our server came over with place settings for the main course. 15 minutes after that, she stopped by to say “so it looks like you’re still waiting for your main course.” We let her know we had already received our mains, and she said she would go check on our desserts. 30 minutes later, she brought out the very lackluster desserts - overly sweet sorbet and very bland bread pudding. She set the bread pudding down in the middle, saying we should share - completely forgetting about my gluten allergy. All in all, it was a terrible experience. For an $80/person tasting menu, I expected a LOT more. We will never come back.
We went to Hult's for Thanksgiving dinner. It's a very nice place and the service was ok. The ideas behind the different courses and choices were good. Unfortunately, it was not so well made that it was worth that price (70$ per person without drinks). The turkey breast had a texture like lunch meat and the sauce for the short ribs tasted somewhat artificial. The rest was ok but not special.
Food was good but service was little slow. Ambiance for a Thanksgiving dinner was fairly poor.
Went for the Thanksgiving feast. And it definitely was. Very tasty and perfectly prepared foods from start to finish. Comfort foods were prepared in a different and delicious manner in generous portions. The service was great, never had to search for waitress or ask for refills or next course.
we are very sad that Hultz will be changing it's menue, etc first of year.
For us, very sad.

Our servers name was Elise and she did a great job. I was dining with my two kids age 2 and 5. Elise was helpful in getting their mac n cheese and short ribs out of the kitchen quickly where we plated both dishes for them to share. Elise took good care of me and allowed me to dine at normal pace. The Pork belly sous vide was excellent. Then I tried the Elk loin. Elk is a delicate meat and cant be over cooked. It was cooked to perfection! My only challenge to the chef is why plate with pickles? I tried one and pushed the pickles to the side. The night ended with wo desserts that the kids devoured as I finished my glass of wine. This is a unique restaurant. I nice setting for a special event or a semi casual dinner. Elise, my daughter Elyse says hello!
Don’t bother going. They are closing at the end of the year. Service reflects this. Menu still reads “Summer Menu”. Such a disappointing evening at a formerly lovely restaurant.
They do not have idea about "GOOD FOOD" this is a terrible restaurant, they must close the door and leave the TOWN.
Amazing food. Great staff. Delicious craft cocktails. What more could you ask for?
Holts restaurant needs serious staff training! Good food by horrible service!
There are serious management issues!
The same owners own another restaurant in Campbell and that is going fabulously!
The place was freezing, all the guests were sitting in coats. There was lots of retired people. They were still serving the summer menu in October. The food was ok but nothing special. All my girlfriends and I agreed that we will not be back.
I took my wife to Hult's for our 12th anniversary - it was both our first time there. The online reservation process was easy and we were promptly seated upon arrival. Two complimentary glasses of champagne (for our anniversary) were delivered right away...yum! I'm sorry to say that l cannot remember our server's name (Saturday, November 4, 530pm, if that helps!), but she was cheerful, informative and checked on us often. My wife enjoyed the exotic cocktails and l was impressed by the beer list and the to-the-top pours. We didn't have to wait long for our delicious tomato-pesto salad and the fillet mignon and short ribs were exceptional! While it started out fairly quiet in the restaurant, it became a little more lively as the evening progressed but never became loud or annoying. We were just too full from our dinner to even consider dessert, but plan on returning to try soon!
Overall, we had a fantastic experience and can't wait to come back!!
Food overcooked and overpriced. Dessert, however, was very good as was the service.
Loved that we could sit outside to more easily hear each other. Who knew that there were so many LOUD motorbikes revving up right outside, though. My elk dinner was delicious but I would have preferred it to be cooked a bit more. I believe our waitress asked if everything was OK but she had gone back inside before I realized and did not want to complain.
I had the Filet and my wife had the steak au Poivre and both were incredible. I could have easily had 2 of the Filets because of how delicious it was and both meals were cooked to order. Will miss Hult’s when it converts to Flights.
Went here for my mom's birthday. This is primarily California cuisine with a few Swedish dishes. Food was rather good. Loved the decor. I tad bit too loud & a little too dark for my taste.
Christine our server was AMAZING. She was really sweet to take time to explain the menu and work with us and our out of town friends. Very friendly service. Would go back if in the area again.
Service was terrible; music was from the 80s; food was minimal.
