Flavio Ratings and Reviews
We are visiting DC for the first time and have 3 picky teenagers. so finding a place everyone likes is nearly impossible. Every member of the family absolutely LOVED their meal. Our 13 year old son called the margarita pizza the best he’d ever had. And my 19 year old daughter asked if we could come back again before we leave. We may have to do that. A great experience all the way around.
Food was wonderful - great portion sizes and flavors. We didn’t know ahead of time that it was pre-fixe, otherwise we might have selected another restaurant and saved a few bucks. Server wasn’t very friendly, told us to keep our silverware between courses, and quickly turned our table; we felt a bit rushed on an evening that should be relaxing. Ambiance of the dining room was a bit cramped. The candles on the tables were a nice touch. Didn’t think the music selection fit the occasion.
Flavio was great! I went there a few nights ago with my girlfriend and set up a reservation for 8:30pm. We got there around 8pm and they graciously sat us and attended to our needs. The server was quick and friendly. The food was great and I appreciated the minimal intrusions.
We were a little disappointed. We had been here many times, but this time it was very loud because of the music and the windows were all open (it's January!) so it got quite cold. Also, our waiter or cook did not take into account the very simple requests made (a little less sauce for the pasta, the fish a little more cooked through). I have had good experiences here before, so I will probably try it again, but this time was not enjoyable.
Great start with fresh calamari. Downhill from there. Meh drink. Long wait for partner’s course which was cold on arrival. Wait! 2 minutes later here are the mains! Mediocre veal; cold pasta, cold unattractive, monster meatball.
Waiter was sweet and apologetic, but it was too little too late. If you’re a Georgetown student, this may be the place for you. CavernouS and I imagine cacophonous. We were there at 5pm
On a Saturday to accommodate a movie.
We will not be back. (in fairness, they took off the meatball and the cold uneaten pizza.
The server did not know anything about serving wine: gave red wine glasses when we had ordered white wine, the wine was not chilled but we couldn’t ask them to chill it because he poured a glassful without asking us to taste, and he emptied out one bottle between three people in one pour.....
We have dined at many of Geoegetown’s Restaurants but this was our first time at Flavio. There was only 2 of us dining but there were a lot of big groups seated throughout the restaurant & also birthdays being celebrated which were obvious by the ‘sparklers’ & groups of waitstaff delivering the dessert to the many different celebrants. The tables for two are very closely stacked next to one another. At a 2-too we were practically sitting up against the tables of two on either side of us.
Food was solid. It was pretty basic but we enjoyed it: calamari app, salad, basic pasta & salmon dinner. We asked for the salmon to be prepared ‘naked’ - just grilled - but it was prepared with the butter & wine sauce as indicated on the menu. So that gets to the service...not great...got the salmon order wrong or didn’t notice it was prepared wrong...never came back to ask about drink refills until we were finished with our meal (at that point we were not interested in another glass of wine), has to ask several times for lemons for water and water refills...we ordered & were left to our food...service was sub-par.
It’s noisy & Given the number of large tables it seems like a good place for larger groups. We will give it another try but we are not rushing back.
Upon making my reservation, I specified not to be seated near the door as it's still cold outside & you feel the draft when the door is opened. The hostess seated me at a table near the door. It was far enough away so I didn't complain but I would have PREFERRED if she asked whether I wanted to be seated by the door/windows OR against the main wall (as there was ample seating & she directed future guests to that area).
I hecked the online option on my reservation that said "birthday" as my friend was treating me to a birthday dinner. So when I saw a table in the middle of the floor with a "birthday girl" whose dessert arrived with sparklers while mine did not, I was a bit bummed. Granted, I could have initially told my server that it was my birthday but I assumed she knew.
As for the wait staff, once INSIDE the restaurant, the service was impeccable. It was a somewhat slow night but the staff was very friendly, attentive, & our food arrived quickly. The warm bread basket with olive oil was absolutely delicious & we started with the cheese plate. We then ordered the spaghetti bolognese, ricotta gnocchi with a side of grilled chicken (I came here for the gnocchi which is the best I've had outside of Italy), and ended with chocolate mousse cake (decadent & well-made but a strawberry or raspberry drizzle would've balanced out the sweetness).
It wasn't until I was outside waiting for my cab that one of the staff said, "How was your birthday?" I told him dinner was great but no one wished me a happy birthday, even though I included it in the reservation details. So clearly, HE saw the details on the hostess' screen. Along with ignoring my seating preference on a near-empty night, this only goes to show that the hostess didn't care to adhere to-or even inquire with me about-the details on my reservation. She did the exact OPPOSITE of what I specified.
Why add specific (& very brief & reasonable) details to a reservation if they'll only be ignored? Rude!
The food was the only saving factor of the evening at Flavio. Great presentation and flavor. Otherwise, my last meal with my visiting sister was painful. Everyone in the restaurant was wearing their coats while eating because the venue was freezing. Mention of this to the waiter elicited no worthy response. There were very few people there, but all of us were seated directly next to each other so I could hear other's conversation which was rather annoying. Additionally, the music choices for the evening were random and odd, and to add, would be off and on again so many times that it was noticeable and irritating. Our waiter did an okay job - should have been excellent considering the number of people he was serving was so few. Will not be returning, there are plenty of better Italian options in the area. Disappointed.
Came here on Christmas. They seemed to be short staffed, so service was slow. I arrived at 6pm for my reservation and did not leave until 9pm. I’m am still happy they were open, and food was so good and the employees were friendly and made sure we left happy despite the staffing situation.
We arrived a few minutes early for our 8 o’clock reservation. We stood out in the cold while the hostess figured out where to seat us. The restaurant was overly crowded. We got to our seat and the hostess didn’t leave us any menus. Next, a server brought us water and spilled it all over our table. We put a napkin on it but he left our tablecloth soaked for the entire dinner. We ordered a bottle of wine and the restaurant didn’t have it. Then in the span of a couple minutes 2 servers dropped dishes that shattered and 1 server tripped and completely wiped out on the floor. My pizza was cold but my husband and son enjoyed their food. This was our 2nd time at the restaurant. We had a completely different experience in the summer. With all the amazing places to try in DC, I am pretty sure we will dine elsewhere in the future.
Went here for date night with my significant other. The food was great and a reasonable price for DC. The place wasn't packed and the service was attentive but not overbearing. We both got the pastas that are made in house and they were great! We're definitely coming back here again.
We visit Flavio monthly, as the food is good, service better than most and the ambiance is charming. All in all it's a great little place. They could use a little work on the downstairs rest rooms. Being in the basement, they tend to be musty and dank. A bit of improvement here would be a welcome improvement.
