At Flat Top Grill, we believe each meal should be memorable. You’re our guest. You decide. Shouldn’t your meal be prepared precisely to your tastes and preferences? We think so. We will make sure you’ve got what you need, just how you like it—from our homemade sauces to our signature Roti bread.
At Flat Top Grill, they grow it, you choose it, we cook it. C’mon in. Grill’s on!
Food was generally good, the service was nice but they were drastically understaffed for the night. The food was out in only half of the area, with two grill cooks and 3-4 servers plus one manager. The night was way too full to run with that, and ticket times and drink speed suffered.
Service was pretty bad but food was fine
The place needs some freshening up.
They ran out of tofu and never told us before checking in as we’re vegetarian, our soup never came so had to remind twice. We spoke to the manager and all he said was just sorry and walked away. Service was used to be great here but lately it sucks and no one cares about customers. Our waitress never came back to check on us if we needed anything.
Server was super nice and helpful with how the meal works. We have never been there before, great food! 4 boys and mom after a Northwestern game.
was good- not as good as in the past....but still good
Awesome concept. Great value allergen friendly
We have loved Flattop in the past, but this was likely our last visit. The food didn't taste fresh and service was very poor. It took 20 minutes to get a glass of water after requesting it. The first glass was soda water and our server argued with us that it was plain water (three of us tasted it...).
The beef was so dry and lacked any flavor :(
The service was absolutely horrible. The hostess was to busy on her phone to notice we walked in and had zero enthusiasm. Waited forever for drinks and the food tasted like it came from the frozen section of the grocery store.
Awesome 👍. Have been back many times. Service is usually very very good. For some reason it was a little off this time
My kids love it! Kids pricing is super affordable too.
Great food, nice job with the options and all veggies (except the broccoli) were fresh. The chicken was great but the Salmon, not so much.
Interesting idea--but if I'm going to figure out/do everything about what I might want to eat (except cook it), why bother. Ingredients seemed fresh enough, but a lot spilled on the floor making it untidy if not unsanitary. Too many ingredient/sauce combinations--unless you just like stir fry with nothing but what you choose, the results still weren't very interesting. Way too long a wait: to get a server's attention, to get a drink served, to get the food cooked, to get a bill. Server apologized for delay and took one dish off our bill as compensation, which was nice. If you ordered chicken, you got a LOT.
Not my cup of tea at all--I'd never go there again.
We really enjoyed our business lunch on the outdoor patio. We love this location in Evanston.
We ate outside which of course enhanced our ambience experience since it’s downtown Evanston. The server however was very attentive... started to get a bit slow as we waited for the check but it was also prime lunch time and much busier. The process was relatively simple and there were people there to help answer questions since it was our first time there. Only criticism on the food is I felt like the sauce with the stirfry was not mixed evenly, but I also used a light amount of sauce so it could be related to that. The roti (bread) that you can get on the side is definitely worth getting… And the lettuce wraps were surprisingly fresh Bibb lettuce leaves. Not much to not like meal wise since you basically craft your meal. Would definitely go back.
Love it here always- one of our favorite places. Great food and good amount
I love the idea of Flat Top Grill because it allows people to fully customize their dining experience. There are a variety of proteins, sauces, and vegetables that a diner can add to their dish... making it to taste. I don't ever get any of their other dishes as the "make your own" is the best value on the entire menu and definitely the best reason to go here.
The only thing is that the margarita was just okay seems as though they forgot the tequila. Otherwise food and waitress was great for my first time there.
The server had a huge section which slowed things down. That’s not her fault, that’s bad management. There was a terrible odor by the bathrooms that lingered and wafted into the back dining room.... not pleasant.
There was a 15 to 20 minute wait for the table. But as soon as I showed them that we had a reservation, they took us right in. It was busy but we had a really good server who was really nice.
The food was really good. We didn’t see the rice, as it was in pots at the front of the buffet. Should have piled the veggies up higher, and added a lot more mushrooms and broccoli... they cooked down more than I expected.
Look over the entire buffet before you start, and taste the sauces before deciding.
Service was ok. The server wasn’t as attentive as I would have preferred, but we got everything we wanted.
Was very disappointed with the food quality this time around. Chicken was not fully cooked.
Very attentive staff. The restaurant was very clean also. The food is fantastic. And the prices are excellent. It’s an excellent place for a semi quiet lunch or dinner for two but it’s also a great place for a huge party to go eat together.
I'm a fan of Flat Top Grill as I do like that we make our own meal. This visit was with some newbies who really liked it as well. We did have a few issues... the first being (and this usually happens) that some dishes get a rogue piece that they know they didn't add to their bowl. Weirdly, we kind of look forward to this. However, no food allergies with our group -- and we were asked prior to ordering -- I'm sure if their was a food allergy that more care would be taken in the prep. Second, one person in our group asked for beef as her protein and received chicken. We didn't bring it up as she was fine with it.
For the value it's hard to beat. Fun for families for sure. Highly recommended due to value.
Was a litty bday celebration but coulda been more littier if emily pulled up. Food was da bomb doe :)))))))))))))
Excellent food and service! Love this place! Everyone is really nice and helpful.
Entire area smelled like ammonia from the bathrooms. Will never eat there again.
Casual, fun, but I'm not a chef and wish there was a menu or set of recipies i could choose from...my meal was bland, but i guess thats my fault. The bread was good and if you put two sticks in your bowl you get two pieces.
Enjoyed the idea that you can add your own ingredients and amount to the bowls for your own taste. Unfortunately when I told my waiter it was our 1st time, he dropped the bowl off and gave no instructions on what to do so had to ask the hostess who was very helpful in explaining and assisting in how to prepare the bowls and what to do! Actually should have given her the tip
We are regulars at Flat Top. It was good as usual. The only snafu was that they couldn't find our Open Table reservation. We got seated anyway.
The food is always served hot and there is an abundance of choices. We were asked several times how everything was and if we needed anything.
Love Flat Top! Service was super slow, server only came to table a couple times and we had to ask for him a couple of times from other staff
Always a hit with the kids and a good value! Forces kids to be creative and try something new.
Thank you for the 5 star review, Nicole! We hope to see you in soon!
Everything was great! My only complaint would be they need to change the serving utensils more frequently. They were slimy.
Thanks for taking the time to provide us with this feedback, Carol! I am happy to pass along your comments to the staff here at Flat Top. We appreciate your feedback as it gives us the opportunity to improve! We hope to see you in soon!
Food was just decent. My husband’s food was lost and likely given to another customer. After a 10 minute delay of figuring this out after everyone else’s food was given out, they told him he had to make it over again. They also forgot to include parts of people’s dishes (I.e. the rotisserie) for 2 of the guests. Overall food and waiter service was decent.
For large groups, this place is super easy to enjoy a nice meal at! There are vegetarian options, I made my bowl with tofu. The prices are a little steep but the food was very good, especially since I could choose what I wanted and how much of it I wanted. Make sure to fill your bowl to the top and get a piece of their bread! It's amazing. Also there's a student discount.
Our server was great, and the food was delish. Perfect date night restaurant!
It was great!
