Firefly Grill Ratings and Reviews
I read an article about the Firefly Grill in an Illinois Tourism Guide while staying in Chicago. During a recent trip to central Illinois to visit friends, I took them to diner at the Firefly Grill in Effingham, IL. The dinner and Duckhorn wine was excellent. It was an outstanding evening with friends. I would absolutely go to the Firefly Grill again.
I have visited Firefly Grill twice--once for lunch and once for dinner. After my first visit I began recommending it to friends and have heard nothing but good about their experiences. The food is delicious, but the real draw for me is the emphasis on local ingredients, including many of my favorite Illinois farmers (Schottman corn, Miller chickens, etc.), and including produce straight from a compact little mini-farm adjoining the parking lot. No point describing the details of my last meal there, since it was entirely composed from the daily specials, but it was perfect. FYI, I drove 75 miles to eat there and am planning to do that again and again, esp. in the fall, when Effingham is very pretty.
This was our first time back in a couple of years. I still love the building, decor and atmosphere. However, the quality of the food has suffered tremendously. I had the Pork Shank and it was way overdone which is difficult to do since it's supposed to fall off the bone. My wife had the ribeye and it was very salty.
The service was outstanding. The restaurant was not too crowded but there seemed to be lots of staff to serve you and assist with bread, water, etc. The television show "Check Please" was filming while we were there so this could have been the reason for the excess staff but since they were all very helpful there wasn't any reason to complain.
For the last 4 years we have started our annual "Sisters Weekend" at the Firefly Grill. As always we had a wonderful meal and great service. My husband and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary at the Firefly in April. We started our meal by ordering the Cheese Board. What a way to start our meal. Delicious and fun!!!.I told my sisters all about how we really enjoyed the cheese board, so to say the least, we had to order it.We were not disappointed. It was wonderful. It is a great addition to the menu. We look forward to starting our "Sisters Weekend 2014" at the Firefly Grill.
My wife and I decided to try this restaurant on our way up to a ball game in Champaign. We stopped to eat here with our 3 kids (9,5 & 2). The restaurant is in a very well designed building and the food and service matched the appeal of the building. I was a little bit hesitant at first because upon entering I thought it may not be so kid friendly, but I was mistaken. The children's menu is simple with nice offerings and the waitress was very pleasant and good. The kids got to feed the fish and enjoy a nice meal. My wife and enjoyed the food and ambiance as well as the pleasant atmosphere for family dining.
We were in Efffingham for Corvette Fun Fest, and were looking for a decent restaurant other than a chain or fast food. We saw Firefly and decided to check it out! What a surprise!!! The restaurant has an impressive menu, uses local ingredients and ingredients from their own garden! We were so impressed we went back the next night. All of our selections were awesome!! Burrata, escargot, Caesar salad, halibut with panzanella salad, waygu ribeye with truffle whipped potatoes and mushroom ragout, fresh cheese and mushroom pizza and confit chicken wings. Dessert was awesome too! Will make it back for sure on our next trip to Effingham!!!
We had a reservation, but were seated in the back room witha couple of very large groups. Felt a bit like an afterthought with no atmosphere or music. More like cafe dining. Our server was excellent, however. For the very high prices, we would have expected more of a gourmet touch and flavor in the food. Although the veggies were touted as "fresh from the garden, the menu didn't describe them as organic. My fish was wonderfully fresh but still not deserving of the $34.00 price tag. My husbands fried chicken lacked flavor and again not deserving of the price tag. The wine must was great.
This is a beautiful rose of a place hidden within the wheat fields. What I mean by the title is: the restaurant is a beautiful rose hidden within the area (like a wheat field). It is a little off the beaten path but the exterior and interior décor was beautiful and relaxing. What I found most appealing was the atmosphere, location and décor matched the wonderful menu. The staff didn't rush us, explained things and were wonderful with our 3 year old Grand-daughter. The food was delicious and plentiful. I look forward to our next trip to this area and our next meal at this wonderful restaurant. I would HIGHLY recommend it for anyone willing to try new things and be pleasantly surprised.
My fiance and I have been to the Firefly multiple times. This past meal was the best we've had! The sweet corn and lobster chowder was so good, after the first bite we placed an order of it to go! My seared scallops and risotto was to die for, as well as my fiance's steak. The service was top notch, and the evening was an overall perfect night! Thank you so much! Oh, and don't forget to order the escargot ... What. A. Treat!
After two great visits to Firefly, we went back for our 3rd time. In previous visits I noticed shakiness in the service but this time I realized it to be a pattern. The wait staff is disorganized. From my having to ask for a wine list then wait 5-10 minutes to get one to not getting our steak knives until after we has finished.
This was the third time I ordered the filet and instead of the grilled asparagus I was expecting, I received four tomato slices garnished with parsley. Hardly worth the $30 price tag and a huge disappointment.
What I am noticing is that there seems to be greater attention to aesthetics than to service. After two great 'hits' this experience was a miss and unfortunately has blemished my opinion.
Not one vegetarian entree. Request for accommodate was met by waitress saying I could choose the side dish set from any entree and have that as my entree. I got an appetizer sized risotto and two morel mushrooms as my whole meal. Farm to table doesn't extend to anyone not wanting meat for their meal. I have more choices at Burger King. Major disappointment.
The Firefly Grill is a gem. The base menu is family friendly, but Chef Nial's special menu is as good as any restaurant in the country for the money. We recently had a fabulous charcuterie plate and followed it with halibut and salmon. Both fish preparations were perfectly cooked and presented. The ambience is relaxed and the service is always excellent. We annually drive from Arkansas to Michigan and back. Just our luck that Effingham is exactly halfway. We now build a trip to the Firefly into each grinding journey. A true delight!
Had the pork shank with polenta, and it was fall-off-the-bone tender. The meat was marinated 4 hours in a very tasty sauce, and the polenta was a great compliment to it. Wife ;had the pork chop, and while it was very good, we both felt that the shank was better.
One of our favorite dining destinations when traveling East/West from Delaware to New Mexico, Firefly always satisfies with 'just-right', delicious offerings, promptly served, and in comfortable, attractive surroundings. Several trips we have planned an overnight in Effingham just to book and enjoy dinner at The Firefly Grill...I even bought their t-shirt, which I do for only special places. Highly recommend!
This was our second visit to Firefly. The first experience was horrible( 2 hour lunch that was not what we ordered). This trip wasn't any better. The crab cakes were below average and my wife's pork chop was so tough she couldn't cut it without shaking the whole table. I paid $22 for two small crab cakes that came with fast food tasting fries. Really? Not to mention the $4.50 warm, tasteless cottage cheese. It seems like the diner is just paying for the fancy food descriptions on the menu. There is a reason why the restaurant was only half full on a Saturday evening. Very disappointing. $95 for a meal that was worth $20. I feel like a sucker. Not again. I should have listened to my friends and stayed away.
We had always wanted to go to Firefly Grill, so we opted for an Anniversary Special to drive the hour and a half to go there for dinner. It was very good, but a bit pricey. The atmosphere was great, the waitresses were very good, and the fish in the lake were awesome! Overall, great experience.
Didn't get seated until 15 minutes after reservation. Another couple came in with 6:15 reservations (mine were at 6:00). The hostess sat that couple before us and that's when I complained and she found us a table. After a very long wait, we received our salads and less than a minute later, our entrees were brought to the table. Warm bread is included on every table. We asked for our bread several times, but never received it. The hostess completely ignored our request to ask the waitress to bring out check. We had a show to attend and because of the service, were running late. I was facing the hostess station and she made no effort to communicate to the waitress that we needed our check. We were late for our show! Never again!
I on a recommendation decided to take my wife to dinner here for our 40th anniversary. It was a 170 mile round trip drive and more than worth the drive. Upon arrival we were escorted to a table overlooking the water. A beautiful fountain was located within our view. The hostess was gracious and we had two delightful servers (Shelby and Cinna) who helped make our celebration special with their attentiveness and sense of congratulatory fun. As a surprise for us we were served with two complimentary glasses of champagne. The food was incredible! The entire evening was five star and made for a very special wedding anniversary.
We don't live near to Firefly Grill (it's a 2 1/2 hour drive), and when our travels take us through Effingham, we've either just left home or we're just approaching home, so it's not exactly on our beaten path. Nonetheless, we manage to visit at least once a year, if not more, and we've sampled brunch, lunch, and dinner. Simply put, the place is a gem -- it's unlike anything we've seen elsewhere in the region: it combines gourmet-level cooking, with a serious devotion to excellence, with the casual atmosphere and genuine sincerity of the midwest. The staff is unfailingly courteous, observant, and responsive. The 126-mile trip is easily worth the time and the effort. Congratulations on an having created an extraordinary institution!
Great food & presentation, beautiful scenery as sun was setting (flowers, lake, fountain, fish), variety of seating (indoor, enclosed porch, bar, outside deck, casual outside lounge groupings), casual atmosphere but trendy feel, great service. They called to confirm on-line reservation. Requests were granted. Prices were high for our area, but value & quality of food make those prices acceptable. The rib-eye had terrific flavor & texture. The brownie-to-share was "built" table-side so was even more decadent! Location is near I-70 and Effingham Performance Center, but still seems secluded & tucked away from hustle & bustle.
