Fifty Six Union
Peter is a ’78 graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. He came to Nantucket in '79, and has worked in some of the top restaurants on the Island. In the year 2000, he and his wife, Wendy, open Fifty-Six Union.
Peter’s Global Cuisine changes seasonally, using fresh, local ingredients. Wendy’s 150 bottle wine list includes the ‘top guns’ as well as the unique ‘little gems’. They now serve their own Private Label Pinot Noir by the glass, produced and bottled by Steele Wines, called Veronica’s Private Reserve.
one of our favorites and never fails!
yummy food big cocktails
and always great to be greeted by wendy
Thank you Peter and Wendy...and Eric and Evan - fantastic food, service and the G&Ts were fabulous
Food over cooked unfortunately.
It was a great experience except that the whole order has to be placed and our concern that it wouldn’t be staged properly. Our mussels arrived (appetizer) and salads appeared appeared at the same time. They did take salads back, but it was frustrating.
56 Union has never disappointed - excellent food, service and ambience. Treat yourself to the alfresco dining - and the cozy blankets on the back of each chair if it gets cool!
Food was as delicious as anything I’ve had in the Island in this gem of a restaurant. Sorry we hadn’t tried 56 Union earlier. Simply a delight! Best crab cake bar none!
We love Fifty Six Union for many reasons. Service, quality, and atmosphere...just to name a few.
This lovely little restaurant, only a few blocks from downtown serves excellent food to enthusiastic diners every night. Peter (chef) and Wendy (sommelier) Jannelle put together an eclectic menu of global cuisine in a friendly, informal atmosphere.

cozy restaurant with great service and food. A last minute cancellation forced us to reduce our number of guest, but we were still treated like royals. We will return for certain
Good food. Home made raviolis were outstanding. Attentive and friendly service.
Food is amazing. Drinks made by a pro!
Great birthday with Wendy & Peter
Zero problems. Food excellent.
One of the finest restaurants on Nantucket. Food wonderfully prepared. Attentive knowledgeable staff. Always a pleasant and memorable experience.
Most of the food was delicious especially the appetizers. Lamb was over cooked but server tried to please everyone.
As always wonderful service and terrific food!
It was too loud in the middle of the bar but the food was delicious!
Excellent food. Scallops entree, tuna entree both incredible. Great appetizers too. Killer dessert!
Very mediocre. Had ahi tuna that was not good. Fish on this island should be fresh and outstanding!
We love going to 56 Union and get there once a year while we are on the Island. Great food, great service and really nice atmosphere.
Evan at the bar was awesome, we loved the espresso martinis! Bobby was very attentive, our food was brought out promptly. The flavors were so incredible we loved everything!
Great night. And great food at good prices for ACK.
Delicious food and fabulous service by Boris.
My husband never misses an opportunity to enjoy the Javenese rice. I enjoyed my fish very much. The service was excellent. It is always a good choice.
I really wanted to like 56 Union. We've eaten at nearly every restaurant on Nantucket, some of them several times, and had promised ourselves many times that on the "next trip" we would go to 56 Union. So on Friday evening, we finally went. Man, what a huge disappointment. Our waiter seemed to be either new, distracted, or completely uninterested in doing his job. We could barely hear a word he said, and he didn't offer to tell us the specials or anything about the restaurant at all. We ordered three appetizers for the four of us, and three of us ordered wine that we said we wanted with dinner. He brought the wine before the appetizers which took FOREVER to be delivered. He did apologize for the delay and even provided a complementary watermelon salad to compensate us for the wait. Meanwhile, we had consumed all of our wine before we got the appetizers, each of which was delivered at a different time - my husband's, a $21 crab cake got delivered less than 5 minutes before the meals came out. No one ever asked us if we would like more wine, we sat with dirty plates and empty water glasses for the majority of the evening (at one point I got up myself and got a water pitcher to fill our glasses) and after the waiter took away our dinner plates, he never asked if we wanted coffee or desert, just brought the check. And no, it wasn't late!!! We left before 9:00 p.m. and the restaurant was more than 1/2 full when we walked out the door. When he delivered the check, we still had dirty silverware, a ramekin of ketchup, a dirty butter plate, and a ramekin of butter on the table. Maybe the food was good, but given the horrible service, it was hard to notice. We will never go back.
There were nine of us for a family get-together with three generations. The restaurant could not have been a better choice. Great food, service, and ambience. My Dad needs to use a walker and the restaurant could not have been more accommodating. We sat outside and had a perfect evening.
DELICIOUS MEAL, A BIT PRICEY, BUT DEFINITELY WORTH IT.
Delicious food. Good Service.
We loved it all, from the halibut to melon + prosciutto to the famous fried rice dish. I ended with a the toffee sundae (and an espresso martini too, don't you judge me!) for dessert. All around great experience.
It was ok.. the guy sitting next to us said the f*** every other word. Some lady had a screaming kid and acted like it wasn’t a big deal.
My husband and I had a date night here and we sat outside on the back patio. It was beautiful! The lights, decor, heat lamp made for a lovely evening. Cocktails were inventive and yummy and one came with a free cap. We ordered curried mussels to start and they where amazing. The flavor, the risotto on the bottom - out is this world delicious. For our main dishes we enjoyed the lamb and the tuna. Both were flavorful and outstanding. And dessert - pomegranate creme brûlée - I will never forget it. Delicious!!!
Awesome food. We both had pecan crusted halibut. Delicious! Service was outstanding
Good food and a very professional staff. I prefer a warm friendly front of the house staff. For me that is the difference between having a good meal and having a dining experience.
Always a great meal / never a complaint
Had a most pleasant dinner at 56 Union this past weekend. The halibut we both had was delicious as were our clams casino and beet salad starters. Our server was pleasant which added much to our experience. We had dined here before and will continue to do so in the future.
Excellent...very cozy and warm on these cool spring evenings
Our favorite restaurant in Nantucket!
Excellent dinner and afagatto for dessert to top off the evening...where would you rather be on a cool spring evening
A delicious meal with friends in a room with lovely ambiance. Service was excellent, attentive but not intrusive, friendly but not unctuous. Bravo, a great restaurant where I will return again and again.
