Inventive food - the atmosphere needs to improve.
Service was fantastic.
What a mixed bag this place is!
The good - lovely atmosphere, quiet, charming. Good (but pricey) selection of wines by the glass.
The not so good - SALT! Lots of salt in everything. The mushroom appetizer would have been fabulous because the plate had wonderful mushrooms of all kinds. But the sodium killed the dish.
The guinea hen was absolutely delicious, but the portion was pathetic at any price, let alone $42.
The "gulf shrimp and polenta" was not gulf shrimp like I've ever had, the shrimp themselves very small and nothing special, the "polenta" looking and tasting like quinoa. When I questioned this, I was told it was some special corn. Don't see the point at all, the grain was tasteless, the texture unpleasant. What's wrong with standard polenta? This was no improvement on the tried and true.
It seems that with a little more attention and work this could be a great restaurant. But I will wait for them to get their act together. At these prices, you can do much better elsewhere.
We apologize for your experience. I had followed up with our server regarding your experience. The only concern/question you had was in regards to the black corn polenta. We had informed you it was Dakota black corn polenta not quinoa. I feature the Dakota black corn to celebrate the corn eaten by my Blackfeet and First Nations People. The passive/aggressive review is unfortunate. We would have gladly taken proper corrective action had you brought these concerns to our attention at the time.
Beautiful inn, great service, excellent food. A very special place.
Thank you for your review. We look forward to your return. We appreciate your support!! Best, Chef James Massey
Field and Cellar is an undiscovered gem! Chef Massey’s creations rival any restaurant in the Berkshires.
We had the Duck Wings, Foraged Mushrooms and Egg, Venison Loin, and Nison Short Ribs. All are highly recommended. They cocktail menu was most creative. My Rose Bush Manhattan was delish.
The service was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. There was also a jazz duet.
My only criticism, which is minor, is that the dining room could be spruced up to match the quality of the food and service.
Delicious, creative food and great service. Wish we were from the area so we can go there again.
Uneven service, decaying white elephant for ambiance. Food tried and succeeds sometimes.
Chef Jim Massey expertly prepares the regular menu offerings as well as a list of specials. The food was superb, the menu varied and interesting and the service first rate. On a Friday night there is even a piano playing softly in the dining room. It is a great choice as well as a terrific value for people who appreciate fine dining.
The amuse bouche, lobster rolls and steak tartare were all excellent. The bison short ribs were way to salty and the chef made an adjustment to the bill. This would not keep me from recommending this restaurant or going back. We had eaten there three weeks earlier and had an outstanding meal
Menu was limited but food was good. However, in every other aspect (drinks, service, ambience) they are not up to par for a restaurant at this price level. Too many other great dining options in the area to settle for this.
We had dinner this evening at Field & Cellar. The service was friendly and competent. The atmosphere was quiet and easy going. The wine by the glass was good and reasonably priced. The sour dough bread with blueberry skin and honey butter was warm and crispy The meal was spectacular. We split two entrées. The crispy rabbit and the blistered tomatoes and cheese filled squash blossoms. This was not a lot of food but both plates were beautiful, very well prepared and delicious. We finished with the cheesecake and lemon cake. We met the chef to thank him for the great meal
We have been to many high end restaurants in the US and Europe. The meal st Field & Cellar was as good. Certainly, if you go for fine dining, don’t miss this place.
Our view of this restaurant was already tainted upon entering when we were met by very tired, dated decor in the Inn and a gentleman playing a keyboard. Felt like we were going to a really bad wedding. Our table was actually on what I believe was the dance floor! The food and service were adequate at best. The chef is very imaginative with food and plating but everything was just not quite there. Food was tasteless for the most part and portions extremely small for the prices charged. We had a beet salad for $18 that had a few pieces of frisée, half of a ping pong ball sized beet sliced super thin, and a duck egg that literally looked uncooked sitting on top. I couldn’t eat it, nor could my guest. Our meal totaled almost $200 for four people and we barely ate anything! We left and went elsewhere for dessert. Their website is very modern and upscale looking but the restaurant is anything but...
We were returning to the Thornewood Inn for yet another wonderful stay and booked a dinner reservation in their new restaurant, Field & Cellar. The chef, Jim Massey, is creative and imaginative! We were especially interested in the rabbit, which was delicious, as was every course and choice that we ordered. We definitely recommend having the experience of staying at the lovely Thornewood Inn and partaking of their wonderful cuisine while being entertained by a piano player and looking onto the gardens in the back.
We shall return!
The food was extremely creative and wonderful. The grilled apricot appetizer was amazing. The sea bass melts in your mouth and the beef tenderloin with foie gras and garlic mash potatoes was an explosion of flavors.
Just an overall great experience - very creative menu with excellent appearance and a delightful staff - worth going out of your way but if you are up in the Berkshires it is in Great Barrington
Exceptional and creative cuisine using local ingredients. Wonderful attentive service. We can’t wait to return!
We have driven by the Inn in which this restaurant is located quite often and never knew there was a restaurant there. The arrival of a new chef - name change - and a bit of local talk and we tried it. We were pleased if not amazed - went back with some friends who share our glee. Go and enjoy creative food, well presented, and served by caring folks
Lovely Berkshire setting. Food and customer service outstanding.
Manhattan prices, but Manhattan quality. Interesting dishes with Asian and Mexican influences. Beautiful room with great views. Excellent service.
Field and Cellar is all around an excellent restaurant. The food was so delicious and the staff was very attentive. The Inn and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. I will definitely be coming back for the pork belly appetizer which was the best I've ever had. Well worth the visit.
We love this restaurant
We were very pleased that a high caliber restaurant has been added to the Great Barrington scene. Food and Service were both great!
Field and Cellar doesn't have its act together yet. It's in a sleepy Inn and a tired decor of the room. While the food is "farm to table" the menu is very limited and very pricey. The food was very good but not great. The service was scattered. When one of our guests asked if something was gluten free the waiter never returned with an answer. They have no wine list, just bottles of those wines listed on the menu by the glass. The place has potential but it's not there yet.
Wonderful experience at Field and Cellar at Thornewood Inn. Enjoyable atmosphere and impeccable service. Amazing food creations and presentation. Highly recommend going to Field and Cellar!
Wonderful meal and attentive service!
This place is such a gem - loved our meal and the ambiance. Watched the sunset over the mountains while listening to some wonderful piano playing. Food is creative and is a perfect farm-to-table experience. Highly recommend!
Food was outstanding. Dined on 5/5 and enjoyed a Cinco De Mayo themed menu. We live in Great Barrington and now consider this to be the best restaurant in town. The greens that accompanied the meals were unique and best I have ever had. The starters and entrees were something that you would experience at Wheatleigh or Blantyre.
The atmosphere is inviting and the seating comfortable. We welcome having a table cloth and frown on other area restaurants that serve on bare tables.
An imaginative restaurant by a chef who really understands local and farm to table. The setting is quite attractive, comfortable, with a beautiful view.
Amazing dishes from Chef Massey and Watson. Delicious cocktails and the bread! Looking forward to going back soon!
Just the best night dining here. Creative menu, delicious and beautifully plated. Great cocktails. Friendly service- Like being invited into someone home. Local seasonal food- excellent overall experience. Shoutout to Chefs Massey and Watson for their innovative and well executed food. Beautiful dining room. Lovely ambience with live piano. Gorgeous west facing sundown highlighted the sunset. Could not recommend more highly!!
