Felix's Fish Camp Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I recently had lunch at Felix's; and it was, as we have come to expect, superb!!!
We had no wait time to be seated (we had a reservation). The staff was prompt and attentive, without being overbearing. Our server was excellent; her timing was perfect. She seemed to stop at our table, just was we were finishing this or that.
Our meals were delicious. I would characterize the food as a mix of southern and Cajun.
For those who have never stopped by Felix's, the name may be a bit misleading. While Felix's Fish Camp is on the causeway and overlooking the bay (with remarkable views), it is not a traditional/working fish camp. Even though, it might appear so (inside and out), but that is part of the ambiance. Which is not "painted on the walls".
P.S. Speaking of the staff being attentive, pay attention to the color of your cloth napkin, it will either be light or dark, dependent on the color of your clothing. Nice touch, and something typically found in more formal restaurants.
Superb as always. Felix's has been #1 on our list for a decade and for good reason. The food is always outstanding, particularly the crab soup, camp salad, and the key lime pie. You can't go wrong with any of the entrees either. One of the few consistent restaurants left that hasn't tried to cut expenses by ridiculously cutting the little things like salad dressing. The service is always impeccable. The hour and a half we spent there alone was worth the drive from KY for the holidays. Do yourself a favor and forego those other causeway places and any other chainy tourist trap you come across -- head straight for Felix's (but be sure to make a reservation or you will wait for it).
Everything is relative. Compared to many New Orleans restaurants, for example, Felix's is mediocre, 3 stars. It can be an enjoyable experience because of decent food, a pretty view, a place to go. It's loud and hectic and feels forced and staged in service and interior atmosphere. However, the servers are well-trained to their standards and the food good (not great).
The fish is usually tender but last visit two orders of fish were so tough we thought it may be chicken when cut with a knife. The server agreed it was subpar. Therefore, the servings were replaced with flaky properly-prepared fish. However, by the time it arrived, we were too full to enjoy it.
Sadly, there are not many (if any) options for excellent food in Mobile restaurants. Felix's is, however, one of the best options related to others, in my opinion.
The service was great. The food was not as good as I remembered. You have dropped the crab and corn bisque which was my favorite thing. The fish creole was over cooked and the shrimp and grits used to have Gouda cheese grits instead of grits with yellow cheese on top. Just not special.
We stopped on our way through town to spend the night on the coast. We had a marvelous dinner and could not have had a better waitstaff in Colby. Thank you! We highly recommend the West Indies salad, the fresh catch of the day, the crab claws, the oysters, and anything with lump Crab meat and or soft shell crab on top! Excellent!
Returned to Mobile for a visit after a year away. There just isn't a restaurant--much less a good fresh seafood restaurant--in the Detroit metro area life Felix's. In fact, we haven't really found a place like Felix's in the Tampa metro area (some close but just not the same). Felix's was just as expected--wonderful. Great view. Good fresh seafood fixed just right. Exceptional service. And the same gorgeous view of Mobile Bay.
We were there for lunch on a Friday. My friend and I ordered the fried shrimp and it was awesome. Very fresh and not heavily breaded. Had the Fried Green Tomatoes as an appetizer which was tasty. Hubby had the fresh catch on the Camp Salad. I would recommend this establishment. The only negative was that it was extremely loud and difficult to carry on conversation.
We had a long business lunch for 4. Service was excellent. Food was prepared quickly. It was a little loud in the dining room but not so much that it was a problem. Fish, seafood au gratin, and sides were all prepared excellently. I wish the lunch menu portions were a little bigger, but they were very good.
Great food as always. All in all, we had a great dinner. The only negative was that we had a reservation at 4:00 and didn't get acknowledge until 4:12. Of course it was shift start time but doesn't that happen every day? After that, every thing was on point and we had a great meal.
Another very pleasant dinner with friends at Felix’s. We have been dining here at regular intervals for about 15 years and food quality has remained excellent. The menu has trended lighter with fewer thick sauces and has added high quality beef selections to the comprehensive fish menu. The coleslaw is outstanding and the West Indies salad is exceptionally good - perhaps the best available. Lots of fish selections with locally caught featured. Fried is just one of three or four preparation options and Southern clichés like hush puppies and greasy green are absent. Felix’s is a regular recipient of Lagniappe’s Nappie award for best seafood and has become a bit more casual and less fine dining oriented but I put this as all to the good. After all it purports to be a “Fish Camp.”
great concept service was excellent and the building itself was a lot of fun. Words don't describe that this place was built for fun' The food was good but!!!. I had Redfish Almondine I know the term but I never saw such a thick layer of almonds. Too much butter and salt but once you scraped the topping off the redfish was tasty.
