Some of the most delicious food we’ve ever had! Service was very personal and generous as well.
Great place, excellent server, absolutely recommend it!
We did the full tasting menu and our chef, Ryan, did an exquisite job both overall - and consideratly meeting our dietary restrictions. We'll be back for more!
The entire staff of Fat Hen perfectly complements the amazing food. Chef Brian is a true creative - not just for the sake of visual beauty. The food is delicious and well thought out. Not only that, he sources ingredients with integrity and community in mind. Jake and Jamie make dining an absolute pleasure and wine pairs are carefully made by them - enhancing the food perfectly. There is no reason to order off the menu. Order the chef’s whim....trust me, you want Chef Brian to make your decisions with his beautiful food. Overall, Fat Hen is a warm and inviting experience where food is love!
Great food. Fun restaurant
A fantastic experience. Food is always memorable and of course delicious on so many levels. Cozy place, great service.
Sadly the risotto was over seasoned to the point it was inedible. Ceased salad was marginal at best. Too much dressing, not enough flavor. Wish I could find something good to comment on. The server was really attentive.
Took a chance and won.
Decided to try a new restaurant and what a win. We went with the very affordable (for this type of restaurant) 4 course taste menu so we didn't have to make too many difficult decisions.
We started with the yummy smoked trout pate and the creamy smooth foie gras. Then onto gnocchi and lumache. While we are not pasta fans, and normally would have skipped this course, you wouldn't be disappointed if you only went for the pasta. Then onto a main of more trout and scallops with celeriac in many forms. The seafood was cooked to perfection and tiny tots of celeriac delighted me. Desert choices included biscotti and super smooth semifreddo.
Most dishes had both smooth and crunchy textures and also contrasting tastes--birch ice cream with the semifreddo, tart cherries with the lamb past--which kept things very interesting for the palate (although the tart cherries were perhaps a tad too harsh a contrasting flavor).
Amazing service, strong and tasty drinks, and excellent food!
Too dark!!! I Could not see the food...and some was served on black plates to boot.
Food was mediocre. Gnocchi was the only thing I liked.
Service was inattentive. Took 15 minutes to get our check, and when the server finally came back to our table, he brought the restaurant tablet (iPad). “Something is wrong with the internet connection” (so he said) I could not get a receipt or even see an itemized bill on the tablet. And when I asked to see the itemized, the server kind of rolled his eyes and said, “Well, I can just tell you the prices”. Sorry! I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being scammed! I was not impressed...at all. Very bad end to my birthday dinner. I do not recommend.
Not worth it
A small venue, somehow attached to the much larger La Brasa next door, Fat Hen on Broadway East was at least as wonderful on our second visit as on the first. This time we gave ourselves over to the "Chef's Whim" option, which was generous, and we had one splendid course after the next, with a range of textures and flavors that were perfect for a winter night. The service was informal but attentive (and informative when describing the dishes we sampled). We left nothing on our plates and finished with the comfortable sense that we had eaten just enough, not too much, not too little.
A plus: we recently referred a friend, who got back to us with thanks for their delightful evening at Fat Hen.
A real gem. The pasta is great (and very reasonably priced). The staff is fantastic and really make you feel welcome. Everyone seems to take pride in their work.
Went with friends on a weeknight. The complimentary bread and butter with olive oil was excellent. We ordered the arancini and pate for appetizers. Arancini was soft and creamy and pate was flavorful but too salty for my taste. The pasta selection was great, and I got the cherry lamb ragu pasta which was sweet and tasty but the pasta was a bit overcooked. My friend's clam risotto was good but also too salty and I'm afraid that the seafood menu in this restaurant is way saltier than the rest. The dessert was pretty and sophisticated. I might come back but wouldn't order seafood here.
Service was impeccable from the moment we arrived. When I made the reservation, I requested a table against the wall rather than in between other diners. As soon as we walked in they acknowledged that request without us saying anything and made it happen. We simply had to wait maybe ten minutes for the party to clear out, which we did while grabbing a drink at the connected bar at La Brasa from the super friendly bartender. You can bring your drinks from that side back to the Fat Hen (bonus!). We then embarked on the Chefs Whim tasting menu which was incredibly varied (hamachi, fois gras, pasta, steak, vegetables). The waiter was extremely attentive but never hovering. Dishes were presented beautifully and the staff very knowledgeable. I only docked one point on the food as the steak was tougher than we both expected. The pasta course was by far our favorite. The meal concluded with a bonus dessert round complete with a birthday candle as we were celebrating my bday (again, which I only mentioned in my notes while making the Resi). We look forward to celebrating many more special occasions here in the future. Their attention to detail all around is unsurpassed. The place is also so cozy and intimate. Very romantic.
My husband and I had our last dinner here before his deployment. We ordered the chefs whim and it was amazing! We have been to fat hen many times and it never disappoints us! Definitely our go to place in Somerville!
On Wednesday evening we had an A+ dinner prepared, cooked and served by the chef 👨🍳 at Fat Hen.
Unique and tasty preparations!
Food was good but the place has no vibe. It was a little sad. The waiter was clueless and had too many tables.
Excellent as always.
Everything was just average, can't complain but for the price and hype, I expected more. The ambiance was lovely, and I like the intimate setting. Given the small size of the staff and menu, I expected our waiter to have more knowledge of the menu and to have a more elevated culinary experience. I wouldn't strongly recommend it, but I would consider giving this place another chance.
The only criticism I can offer is that for a steak, you need a steak knife...otherwise this is a fabulous place to have a meal--especially with someone special
We were lucky to get a between-the-holidays seating for two a couple of hours before arriving. With no idea what to expect, we were delighted with a warm welcome, meticulous service comfortably provided, and superb food. Everything about the evening was unpretentious, everything met my highest standards. My only compunction about writing a rave review is fearing that my next reservation might be harder to get.
We went for a celebratory dinner and both had the chef's tasting menu. It was fantastic. Thoughtfully crafted, carefully prepared, delicious food. The chef himself brought out each dish and described it to us personally, which was a nice touch - you could clearly see his love for the craft, and it was delightfully infectious.
Some of the best Italian food i’ve had! The staff is extremely attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Fat hen was an exceptional delight. As frequent travellers to Napa and Sonoma, our food and wine palate are pretty sophisticated. The wine and food pairing were perfect, the food fantastic, and the service over the top. The hidden gem is now one of our all time favorites.
Wonderful meal with excellent service!
Lovely meal. Service was excellent and very personable
Fantastic meal with an intimate setting—La Brasa is always a buzzing spot but Fat Hen is a softer, more quiet experience still full of flavor and exciting options. Definitely a great date spot!
From the service to the food everything exceeded our expectations. The 4 course menu was just enough food and an amazing way to explore the menu.
We had a great meal at Fat Hen. Both of us ordered the Prix Fixe with the wine pairing - the server was knowledgeable and the food was outstanding.
Just dined here again with my cousin and her husband who just returned from a vacation in Lardin in southern France. They said the experience at Fat Hen reminded them of dining in Lardin at some michelin rated restaurants there. We all did the chefs 6 course with wine paring, the chef brings out the dishes and explains the preparation and ingredients. These guys make their own sea salt by evaporating water from the maine coast! create and great attention to detail ... Been there 3 times and will be back again. If you want to pick your own food (which we think is less fun and adventurous, you can do the "pick 4 courses" thing and get larger portions that you choose. ) We'll be back again soon...
Great food. Cozy ambience. The drinks are very overpriced for the very small pours.
Excellent, combination of cuisine and service was well balanced.
The six course tasting tour was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Such beautiful presentation and unique dishes. The chef is an artist and the service was excellent. Loved every bit of it.
The risotto was a 10/10, ribeye and duck breast 7/10, crudo and foie gras were just so so. Overall solid experience
Awesome food experience! Highly recommended
Absolutely outstanding in every way
This is our third time at Fat Hen and each dinner has been amazing. There are very few tables and the service is fantastic. Each time we have ordered the four course prix fixe, which allows us to sample more of what the chef prepares. This time, we also did the wine pairing. Although expensive, it is a real treat for a special occasion. Highly, highly recommend!
Excellent meal with unexpected flavors! Truly well done
