FARIDA Central Asian Cuisine & Grill
Food took over an hour, all meat was overcooked, servers were no where to be seen.
I had been a huge fan of this restaurant because I had a fantastic food experience previously. I was astounded by how horrible the service was on the recent visit. They never refilled the water and the food took an hour to arrive with no one checking on us. The food was not as good as previously and was overcooked. I have recommended this place to all my friends before this visit. Definitely stay away on busy nights.
Took over one hour to get our food
Great food, service, and ambiance.
Service was really really bad, food mediocre and we were overcharged on two separate items. Will definitely not return.
Very tight place, you basically sit on each other . Service is excellent.
Enthusiastic and darling owners serve outstanding food! Deliciously spiced and perfectly cooked. So good!
Amazing food and very welcoming staff
Friendly, attentive service enhanced a very special meal. The highlight of the meal were the Umka - pillows of crisp puff pastry filled with richly spiced vegetables or meat. Can’t wait to return.
Great food! Friendly service! Cosy decor! Loved it!
Wonderfully different place. Food was exotic to our palates, and delicious.
One wants to like Farida. Alas, reality rears its head. Comprehensive menu with prices generally reasonable but with a few whopping exceptions. Trying to order, 10 minutes later we were informed that there was no Plov, a specialty. All meat could only be ordered medium-well or welldone. Bread, usually a specialty of Central Asia was dreadful, accompanied by a strange gadget that proclaimed itself coffee, oil, vinegar and for all I know Spanish Fly. Pouring it, only vinegar emerged. All entrees came on one plate, all skewered but with no explanation of who got what. Chicken and steak(laughingly proclaimed Prime) were edible but little more. All accompanied by a tiny unappetizing salad, around 3 tablespoons for four people. One entree never arrived: just as well. For most of the meal we were alone until two women showed up. The staff was diligently working at an adjoining table as if a mob was about to descend. For their sake I hope they did but we won't return.
Avoid going during prime dining hours and weekends - even with a reservation the host/owner will not honor your booking time. In our experience, he asked us to wait outside until 45 min past our reservation time. Then upon letting us in, asked our party of 6 to squat at a table for 4 to wait out another table finishing up. When that table finished another 30 min later, the owner insisted that the 4-top we were squished into was where we were going to stay after all b/c he wanted to accommodate another group that was delayed. We explained that we were sitting on top of one another and very uncomfortable, and one of our friends was pregnant. He accused us of beng inconsiderate of his business. It was quite rude - we just wanted was to enjoy the reservation we had booked well in advance and arrived on time for. The food - it was fine, but honestly not worth the rude experience. Understandable for a new opening; less so for an established restaurants that doesn't express any courtesy for diners time.
We have been here many times and while we love the food, the service is just plain poor every time. Lucky for them that the food brings you back. It’s a small restaurant with crowded seating for 25-30 guests and there are generally only two wait staff who handle the phone, take out orders, waiting on and busing tables as well as billing. So they are busy but still rather inefficient. We arrived at 6:15, right on time for our reservation and were seated promptly. Then it took ten minutes to get our menus, another ten minutes to take our order and then almost 15 more minutes before she came with our beer and glass of wine. She brought them individually, making two trips which was dumb. The food comes out in the order it is ready, meaning don’t count on appetizers coming first. That is always the case. The restaurant needs a busboy to clear the tables and to bring water, silverware etc. Those things take too long to accomplish as it now stands. I recommend the restaurant for the food—you won’t be disappointed there—but just be prepared for slow, unorganized service.
Food was amazing. Service could have been better.
I came with 6 friends and we had a reservation already. After 1 hour of waiting only 1 person had been served water and only 4 menus. We tried numerous times to get the attention of the waitresses but they kept seating people instead of attending us. After waiting over 1 hour we still had not been able to order any food or drinks. It was really not fair because people who arrived after us were already ordering and eating their food.
My six friends and I then had no choice but to leave and go the Pakistani restaurant a block away and were served food immediately. I was really disappointed because I really enjoyed this restaurant the first time I went. I really hope that service is improved because just filling tables is not what a restaurant should focus on.
excellent food. warm and inviting environment that will make you want to sit for hours..the waitresses are prepared to answer questions and they aren't pushy.
Amazing food and great service!
Had reservations but still had to wait over an hour to get seated
I had dinner on a week day, the place was packed and I understood why. The food was great, everything I tried was extremely well prepared, the food was authentic and the service was very good. The place is very tastefully decorated and creates very cozy, home like ambience. Highly recommended! Catch
We waited 40 minutes past our reservation time before giving up and going elsewhere for our meal.
My family is Russian and they loved the food. Very small place but makes up for it in food. Service was great and food came pretty fast. Hot and fresh. Would definitely return.
Very tasty. Would go back. Only issue was the high noise level.
Great food, but be prepared for so-so service. This is a small place with minimal room but the good food makes up for it. Make reservations on weekends.
The menu and food prep are excellent. Service is not great, but we had an overall great time. The staff is very friendly and attentive when you can get them to your table.
In the city with my son and we love to try new places. My children have Russian heritage so this restaurant was doubly appealing. The food was delicious and beautifully prepared. Comforting soup with rich broth.
The best Uzbeki food in Manhattan!
Loving it and go again
Service is very good, except that the restaurant is woefully understaffed, presumably due to its space constriction. Food is very good but sometimes inconsistent --the same dish is great once and just ok the next.
Great food and lots of it. Really liked the manti and Uzbek plov, though the veggies they served were just so-so. The prices are very reasonable and the menu is very tempting. Be careful when ordering, as the portions are generous!
We didn't get as far as trying the food; this is purely based on customer service. I booked online using OpenTable and when we arrived there were a lot of people standing outside. I explained that I had booked a table but was told that all slots were gone that morning, which begs the question is this a Farida issue or an OpenTable issue?
We stood outside to wait and thought it a good sign that others were waiting as it meant the place must be good. The restaurant is small but the atmosphere was buzzing and a violinist was playing and we could see that people were being moved to accommodate others. Eventually, all others standing outside were seated and we patiently waited our turn. When were finally collected, we were told that we would be given the best table because we had waited for so long and that we would be looked after better than anyone else.
As previously stated, the atmosphere was great and the menu looked really interesting so we were keen to try the food. In other restaurants we had been to, we had been acknowledged in at least a couple of minutes and offered water, which wasn't the case here. Despite being told that we would be given the best service, after 5 minutes nobody had approached us but my friend had been moved to the end of the table and literally trapped in so that 2 more people could be accommodated. She could not move.
Ironically, the violinist had a table all to himself for his laptop so if he had been moved the new people coming in could have been sat there and not infringed on us.
Another 5 minutes goes by and we were still not approached however, the couple who had been seated after us were being attended to and patiently being told about the food and menu. After wrestling with tables and chairs we walked out.
Not a good customer experience.
Always excited to try a new Central Asian restaurant. This place did not disappoint. Wonderful hospitality! Еда очен вкусно! Спасибо большое!
Amazing food, great atmosphere. Owners are friendly and welcoming.
Amazing flavors created with deceptively simple dishes by appearance. The basic salad was the only dish I don't recommend as it was basically chopped tomatoes and cucumbers with a light dressing for $12. Definable not worth it but everything else is delicious!
If you are an adventurous eater, this place is a find! The owner was so welcoming, he actually brought us into the kitchen to show us how their traditional plov is made—from a recipe passed down through the generations. We’ve been there twice this month, and will surely return for the lagman soup, manti, and another serving of plov. And if Uzbek cuisine is new to you, don't hesitate to ask for help ordering—the staff is very helpful.
A cozy little restaurant on Ninth avenue serving up some unique dishes with a variety of influences, embracing Uzbekistan's diverse culture. The service was decent considering the restaurant was full. The food arrived in a timely manner.
What a great find! Definitely going back! Unique experience - a gem!
Delicious shashlyks!!!!! Must have the lamb rib , Farida roll, and chicken thigh . Attentive service would come back again and would bring friends
Farida is the kind of a hidden gem of a restaurant that you can only find in New York City. It's tucked away in a nowhere neighborhood between Penn Station & Times Square, and it is tiny and lovely. The food was plentiful and delicious and inexpensive. The service was prompt and friendly. It was my favorite meal of a week spent in the city.
Excellent Central Asian Cuisine. I think the kebabs are the best there.
