Opened in June 1997 by famed restaurateur/designer Pat Kuleto and Chef Mark Franz, Farallon is located in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square in the historic Elks Building. Recognizing the demand for large parties, Pat and Mark have also created three private dining rooms on the fourth floor.
Farallon Ratings and Reviews
Read a lot of mixed reviews but decided to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. We were told to wait at the bar when we arrived. I ordered two alcoholic drinks and a water and soda. Was told she had seven drinks ahead of me and I would have to wait. When we were shown our table, I mentioned we had placed an order for drinks as a courtesy. When the waiter arrived and asked, I told them I had placed an order for drinks as a courtesy. Half an hour from when I ordered the drinks, they arrived. After our bottle of wine for the evening. The waiter however was spot on and his service was excellent. But it felt like he could only juggle so many balls in the air at one time. I grew up in San Francisco and know it well. The food had a few hits (charred abalone, octopus) but overall lacked any impressive nature to the dishes. We were not shy to experiment ordering half the appetizers on the menu, half the entree's, and half the desserts. but the gnocchi with the abalone was just mush. The dungenous crab far from fresh. The pork belly, kimchi, and dungenous crab combo confused me. Love the idea (why I ordered it) but for me the experience was a piece of fat, pickled vegetable slices, and crab that had no firmness left. Except for our waiter, the whole experience felt like everyone was going through the motions. At a price point of pushing 200 per person, the walkaway should be one of "Bravo".
We were searching for a unique location for our a business meal with our top client. We wanted a place that was a local gem, had delicious and unique food, and could accommodate a vegan guest in our party. Farallon far surpassed all of our wishes; the food was AMAZING (seafood is what we focused on), and the vegan appetizer and main course was absolutely perfect and appreciated. They could seat up to 8 in the main area (which has very unique jelly fish chandeliers and such a custom decor), but our party had 12 so we had the beautiful and private wine room to ourselves. The service was very personalized and upbeat. We will go again when in the area next!
Our meal at Farallon was good. We ordered the jumbo shrimp to start (approx. $28). Five came out on the plate. They were okay. We felt that for the price they should have been better. Our meals were quiet good (I had the salmon and my husband had the scallops). No complaint here. Our server was friendly and helpful. We also found the other waitstaff attentive.
My husband and I dined here in November, and enjoyed our food very much. The decor is delightful and the wait staff knows its stuff. Good wine list, internet menu was kept current (to the day), so what we looked at on line was the same as what was on the menu. This is unusual! Octopus was wonderful, shrimp chowder, too. Ling cod and salad were both tasty. We didn't try the oysters, but they looked great. Next time. Acoustics are suitable for conversation, which I appreciate.
Probably the worst seafood appetizer presentation I've ever had with substandard quality. Oysters were dime size, 2 mussels had a bad taste, 2 shrimp, 2 claws haphazardly arranged. Value was $20 charged $70. Very disappointing. Waitress didn't seem like she had tasted ANY of the main entrees as her descriptions were lacking any sense of direction. Won't be back.
The hanging jelly fish are just one area where Farallon earns style points. The waiter came back with an odd policy around substituting side dishes with their meat entrees; per the chef's comments, "sides are portioned out already for each main dish." Having dined in top-tier restaurants in New York City and Boston, if I'm paying top dollar for a steak dish I expect malleability to substitute minor side dishes. Other than that good experience.
We dined at Farallon to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We had a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. The service was great and the atmosphere was perfect for a quite dinner. My wife had the scallops and I had the lingcod. Both were perfectly presented and delicious. The chocolate mousse was our dessert option and it was remarkable. Again, a very pleasant dinner and highly recommended.
When I called to make my reservation I requested a "romantic table" over the phone for my 6th year Anniversary. Once we got there, we were seated at a tiny claustrophobic table with my elbow hitting the wall... I was furious and told the mannager, he moved us to a much bigger table in the center of the restaurant as I had originally imagined. Food was good except for the "Ravioli & lobster" dish. The tiny piece of lobster was delicious, but the ravioli was unbearable & drenched in salt. Of course they took that plate off our bill. Overall it was a great experience and a wonderful way to spend our anniversary dinner. My recommendation to Farallon is be a little more meticulous with your customers request & have a better communication between your staff members. I understand mistakes happen, but that Salty Ravioli dish was very embarrassing for such a high end restaurant.
My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Farallon. Our server Nancy was knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive. The food (as always) was incredible. We started with the oysters, and the octopus (LOVED this!). Our main courses were the scallops and the choucroute royale. We finished our evening with a decadent chocolate mousse. Can't wait to return for our next adventurous meal.
This was the first time I had a meal that mimicked the savory passion experience I previous read about. Had the trout entre OMG! Capped off with phenomenal service from Robert and Juan - could not ask for a better experience! The icing on the evening for me was they impecable service and a memorable meal as a woman dining solo! Kudos to Wine Spectator magazine whose review made me aware and 10+ stars to the chef and staff for being able to exceed the expectation the review created in my mind! I am 59 and well traveled. This dining experience was memorable!
Very disappointed by our experience. We had filled out the form to let them know this was a Birthday and opted to have the free dessert option. No mention of the Birthday was made and no free dessert. The waiter recommended the short ribs and parts of it were tough as beef jerky. The scallops were delicious. The prices were high given we didn’t get free dessert.
It's been a while since we've dined at Farallon but the entire experience was as wonderful as we remembered. Fabulous food and calm, seasoned, sophisticated service. Just over the top. I'd recommend to anyone in a heartbeat, whether special occasion or not.
The setting is quite unique and beautiful. The service was excellent. The menu quite varied. All the dishes we ate were well prepared and quite tasty. This was a Thursday night. We had reservations for 6 PM. By 7 PM the place was full. Despite that the dinner was leisurely and we were told the table was ours for the night. We will definitely be back.
Top quality professional servers, superb dining fare and presentation, distinct design/atmosphere all make for an enjoyable evening and memorable event. The prices are rich, but align with other high-end San Francisco restaurants. I cannot say enough about the friendly, timely and otherwise capable staff that accommodated a seating request, altered a menu item (to fit vegetarian need) and were perfectly attentive.
Must say food is wonderful.... expensive but worth trying
Our waiter Jerry (I hope I got this correct ) we loved! Steered us in a good direction
Had the seafood platter appetizer..:
Steak tartare and gnocchi appetizers,
Didn’t feel rushed at all went on a Monday evening
One member of the staff who will remain nameless was Little Young and new. but everyone else very professional and I would say this is a definite go to place
Such a treat! The octopus appetizer was unique and delicious & the cocktails were delightful. We asked for wine pairing and they did a lovely job. Even dessert was gorgeous and fun. The service was so crisp that I almost felt rushed but I was impressed with how professional it was. I’ll be back!
We had 3 courses which were very good, but they failed to bring us our oysters which we ordered first. Also the service was very slow, the waiter never asked if we needed more to drink after i finished my cocktail. Restaurant ambiance was beautiful, maybe better to go for drinks and the raw bar.
