We had a very nice meal with excellent service. The menu was small but diverse. I was not terribly hungry so the kale salad and lobsters claws were perfectly portioned for my appetite. My husband enjoyed his halibut dish. Everything was beautifully plated. The wine list was tremendous. The acoustics are interesting and allowed us to hear conversations from across the restaurant. However, That wasn't a problem as we were seated in a comfortable private booth. The highlight was our very attentive server as well as the birthday card that was waiting at our table expressing birthday wishes for me and appreciation that we shared my "special day" there. We would happily dine at Farallon again.

The staff is very attentive and good-spirited, do not rush you, well versed in the food being presented. Fish is prepared with attention being paid to the proper cooking time so it is presented moist. I ordered Oven Roasted Petrale Sole that was moist, firm and with a crisp surface finish -- excellent.

You walk-in to an inviting wharf style ambiance to the jelly fish bar and it continues through out the restaurant.

Well done staff...

The desk clerk at the nearby Courtyard hotel recommended we dine at the Farallon. Great suggestion! We opted for oysters on a half shell for our appetizer, followed by salad, soup and great entrees. Ann the food server was super nice, well informed, and just a delight. The food was superb! We enjoyed the ambience of the nearly 100 year old interior, and perfect for quiet conversation. Just wonderful!

A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Everything from the ambience, to the food and the service was exceptional. Service was friendly and timely without being intrusive or rushed. (Our meal was a leisurely 2.5+ hrs). 5 star dining at its finest. Great for a special occasion. Yes, it was crazy expensive- but everything I hoped for in a downtown San Fran upscale dining experience

My husband and I wanted a special dinner to celebrate Christmas and his retirement. Farallon fit the bill! Delicious food, beautifully presented, great variety. We asked for a wine pairing to compliment my husband’s lamb dish and my petrale sole, and should’ve clarified the price ($175), but oh well! Memorable evening & highly recommend.

The restaurant was nice and spacious. We were seated in front of the open kitchen so it was noisy and waiters constantly queuing up for their orders. When I booked the reservation the restaurant was running a special offer of a free dessert with every entree ordered. However when the waiter brought the dessert menu he said nothing so I asked. He confirmed but seemed annoyed that I knew. Nice place but for the cost and the snobby attitude I got from the waiter at the end I could drop my $$$$$ elsewhere.

I was a little worried about the mixed reviews given the price, but while it is expensive, it is well worth your money, from my experience.

The place is gorgeous, service was outstanding, food impeccable, and overall I didn't feel in the slightest that it was over-priced. It's classic SF fine dining at it's best.

Great seafood, highly recommend the oyster bar.

The food and service was impeccable. The sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and helped us with our request of finding just the right bottle of wine. The pace was not rushed and yet we felt attended to throughout each course. Happy 20 years in San Francisco Farallon.

I have been to this restaurant in the past and the food, service, drinks and ambiance was superb, this time it was subpar. The service was poor, had to keep looking for the waiter, the food was tasteless and dry, the ambiance unwelcoming. I don’t think I will go back

Came here for my husband's birthday. It's a place we've been wanting to try for awhile in the Union Square area in SF. Love the decor of the oceanic feel with the jellyfish lights. Food was fresh and good. Cocktails and wines were both lovely. It was a lovely evening.

The food was very good, as expected, and as it has been since I've been going to Farallon, which is since it opened. However our evening began with drinks in the bar and a young cocktail service person was quite rude and seemed to have serious chip on her shoulder. Then, and perhaps after some behind the scenes gossip?, our main wait person was just going through the motions all evening (3.5 hours of our special occasion for our party of 3) and never engaged. The sommelier seemed positive and knowledgeable, but extremely rushed, and in selecting a bottle of wine from a large collection of candidates that starts around $75 and goes very far upwards from there, it's not exactly an endearing experience.
In the end, our bill with tip for three was ~$400 with just a single bottle of wine. Though the food was very good (thankfully), we did not feel valued or particularly welcome even. We most certainly did not enjoy an experience worth even half the price we paid. Farallon held an important place in my life due to many momentous & sentimental evenings over the years spent dining with the most important people in my life, but despite this, and very regrettably, my relationship with this restaurant is over.

The bartender was great, and clearly the best thing about this restaurant. From there on everything was downhill. The food quality and preparation was very disappointing. The staff didn’t dare to ask the usual “so, how is everything?” ...Seems they know better than to ask.

It's a nice restaurant with pleasant staff. That said, it was just average service with average to slightly above average food. The lobster chowder and scallops entree were very tasty. They forgot to bring the appetizer (oysters) before serving the salads and chowder. When they did come, they weren't worth the money...so small (ridiculously small) you could barely get a bite size taste out of the shell and on the mini-fork...definite losers! They should take a lesson from Hog Island Oyster.

Never disappointed. Try to sit in the main “pool” room and look at the details in the ceiling. Once you understand the historical references, makes the already outstanding meal even better.
