Opened in June 1997 by famed restaurateur/designer Pat Kuleto and Chef Mark Franz, Farallon is located in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square in the historic Elks Building. Great service food and atmosphere.
Felt a bit rushed to order. Second bottle of champagne wasn’t put on ice.
Food quality was great. Enjoyed the caviar and oysters.
Great staff. Honest. Happy campers already looking forward to the next time
As usual, Farallon was outstanding. The food is excellent, the service is helpful and friendly, and overall, it is a very enjoyable evening.
Great food! The ricotta squash blossoms, Dungeness crab, the sole with ratatouille! My daughter inhaled her filet ! Everything was great!
It took a very long time to get served between courses - 2.5 hours for the entire meal to be done with. Server had a bad attitude from the beginning. No one seemed very apologetic or showed any hustle. Except the bread guy. He was the best.
This restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge. When I looked at the menu online there were many choice however when we arrived there were very few selections. Restaurants was very dark & dingy. Understanding the menu wasn’t easy either. This place is for the super Uber foodie with small portions. Yes everything is fresh and unique but I could have chosen a dozen other places in San Francisco. Waitress was very nice but I wouldn’t recommend this place to any family or friends. So many better choices in the area.
One of my favorite San Francisco stops! Great seafood and better service. The staff is accommodating and informative as well as attentive.
The fish soup was quite mediocre as the quenelle was cold (not as in room temperature, but cold as in “ I just took it out of the fridge”), in addition, I asked for another piece of bread and they were out of it. Most important is that my wife was told that the dishes she ordered had no cheese (it is an important thing as she is allergic to cheese) and, unfortunately for them, the plate had cheese all over it. They had to restart the same.
Finally, we ordered the sole fish. Nothing fantastic, not bad but not great neither.
Definitely the best were the oysters!
Great food and good service - recommended
Farallon is a fine dining establishment at fine dining prices. I'm holding Farallon to very high standards because of that reason. The wine, server, ambiance, and dessert were amazing. They all met the standards one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber.
Unfortunately the appetizer, entree, and sommelier were not up to par. The prawn appetizer was bland and the entree was very salty. The food, except for the dessert, was underwhelming.
The sommelier was defensive and awkward when my wife had questions about a bottle of wine. I'm not sure if he actually gave advice on the wine or just defended himself by saying how great he was at buying wines. We did get the bottle my wife asked about, so he is actually good at crafting the wine list. However, he is not great at interacting with people. I'm still giving 5 stars for service because our server was amazing and I wouldn't want his metrics to get dinged for the sommelier's poor people skills.
Again, the dessert was truly amazing.
Everything was amazing the food was fantastic, the service is excellent. Highly recommended!!!
Wonderful date night dining experience from start to finish. Unique restaurant decor. Jaime the bartender was knowledgeable and helped with my continuing education of Japanese whiskys. Luke the sommelier recommended a fantastic cab franc and our server Will was perfectly attentive and made a great recommendation —particularly on a custom combo foie gras and cheese platter. All around five star night. Thanks for a great time.
The menu is somewhat limited but we ordered fish dishes. Presentation was nice, hot and tasty. Our salad came with our meal so we sent it back. Too expensive to rush through! Management handled well, took off and offered a free desert. We did have the ice cream sandwich which was superb!
Always a grand experience!
The best seafood and oysters! We had oysters at Fisherman's Wharf for lunch and they were small and fair. Then we had them at Farallon for dinner and they were plump, juicy and oh so amazing! Plus the abalone with uni sauce cavatelli!!!! Fantastic.
Having eaten here many times, I was disappointed for the first time. My appetizer of squid with squid ink risotto was overly salty ( and I salt everything) and my rare tenderloin came cooked medium.
The service was great as was their wine offerings.
The kitchen just doesn’t seem to be paying attention to everything. My dinner companions all said their meals were wonderful.
The food and service were spectacular and the restaurant is beautiful!
The decor is wonderful and so is the service. The stuffed squash blossom was excellent as was the almond ice cream with fresh peach and basil. Unfortunately my main course, Lin Cod, was extremely salty. We have always enjoyed Farallon and will return.
My wife was disappointed with the limited selection of the seafood options. However, we both loved the tuna entrée we selected. The lobster salad was just ok. Flavors were good but the lobster portion was small and dry. Service was outstanding. Our server was very personable and was at our table often to refill our water and wine glasses, or ask how our meal was.
Every moment was perfection. Loved the Hemingway cocktail! Each morsel of food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the staff was attentive to every detail. The decor was gorgeous, it definitely felt like we were dining in an undersea palace.
Always a great meal with wonderful service. I have been coming here for many years.
Incredible meal. Food, ambience, service were all spot on.
We were disappointed. The place is in a beautiful space but that’s where it ends. Our waiter had to be reminded to take our drink order after 15 minutes. The raw bar sampler was a rip. 2 measley shrimp, a couple muscles and clams. The Dungeness crab was tasteless and had a weird consistency.
The place has potential but if managemt reads this, I strongly reccomend you either revise that dish or hope that no other yelp reviewer reads this. Our fish was also tasteless and bland. We didnt finish either meals and won’t be going back. If you decide to try this place, I would stay away from those two dishes. Hard to believe it received good ratings on Zagat. I thought this place would be more enjoyable than it was.
Absolutely delicious food. Great for a special occasion.
We have eaten at this restaurant in the past and it was amazing but this time it was poor
The menu seemed fairly limited and at least for us wasn’t very enticing
Slow service. Food was marginal. Restaurant seemed in decline. Sommelier was decent... Seemed like no one was in charge!
Good food preparation and presentation, nice ambiance, service is on point, we thoroughly enjoyed the Ling Cod and Ahi Tuna.
Scallop crude was the perfect fresh bite to start and the pea gazpacho was heavily.
The restaurant was stunningly beautiful. The food was so fresh and creative. We were so glad that we chose Farallon for our anniversary!
Disappointed in the menu selections as they were described. We were given a table for two which was extremely cramped for leg room and the seat was very hard and lumpy!
Love the food, love the atmosphere. We go back often.
A Chihuly designed interior would not by itself qualify a restaurant for high marks. But what a kicker when the restaurant has such tasty food! Our seafood was fresh and nicely prepared and the wine list was within reach price-wise. I would strongly recommend Farallon for any dinner, special occasion or otherwise. In the heart of the Union Square area, we ended up going there twice on our SF vacation. Enjoy!
Disappointing meal. The food wasn't the quality I expected. My fish was raw, not just undercooked. My waiter advised me that the fish was supposed to be prepared that way, but if I like well "done fish", it could be cooked more. I've had a lot of steelhead and never has it come with the entire depth of the centre to the fillet raw! The rest of the dish didn't make much sense: black tahini and cold calamari in a cold curry sauce. The oysters were very good and the dessert delicious. Overall, for the prices charges, I expected better service and execution of the dishes. Will not go back.
Our servers were very nice!
Worse food ever. Had such high hopes because of history and how cool restaurant decor was. Pork dish was all fat and so hammered beyond recognition from heat lamps. Cod had no flavor. Plenty of other places to go in San Francisco
One of the best meals we've ever had in San Francisco, but EXPENSIVE.
A very special place decorated with a seafood theme and a menu to match. Impeccable service and an interesting menu, particularly the raw bar and small plates. Delicious stuffed squash blossoms and scallop crudo. The main course was competently done, although the Tuna not quite rare enough. Unique desserts. A good place to take your time and enjoy. Becuase it has three modestly sized rooms it feels intimate. Some tables in the back room are next to the open kitchen (and yet not too noisy.) Very good wine list including a much better set of wine-by-the-glass offerings.
We were only in town on business for a few days. We wanted to try some of the top rated restaurants in SF. Farallon was an excellent choice...a perfect dining experience indeed‼️
