Opened in June 1997 by famed restaurateur/designer Pat Kuleto and Chef Mark Franz, Farallon is located in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square in the historic Elks Building. Recognizing the demand for large parties, Pat and Mark have also created three private dining rooms on the fourth floor.View Private Dining Details
We enjoyed a birthday dinner for my husband’s 62nd birthday. We had celebrated his 50th here and decided it was time to come back. Our meal was delicious from start to finish! We enjoyed oysters to start, followed by the shaved asparagus salad. My swordfish in a curry sauce was amazing and my husband’s Cod wit Corn & Peas was delicious! Farallon remains one of the most perfect seafood restaurants in the city!
The food was very good, but not "must have." The setting and space was good and conducive to talking.
The place is cavernous and looks kind of like a low rent set for 'The Little Mermaid'....prices are extremely high for the food, and the drinks are outrageously marked up - the beef and cod were both ok (although very small portions) , but my companion's mashed potatoes were INSTANT and my fish was served with a decidedly odd mixture of (frozen) corn and peas, with fresh blueberries and...POPCORN??? I was brought a steak and a regular knife for my fish - but no fork... We only went due to it being close to our theatre plans, but we won't be back.
Food was delicious and fresh. Definetely will come back!!
We arrived 15 minutes early and were told our table was not ready... that was understandable. The couple of cocktails and conversation we had with the bartender was quite enjoyable and made the wait fly by... that was the best time of the evening.
Our server was polite.
The ambiance was phenomenal upstairs. The noise was tolerable although the tables across from us were talking so loud we could hear them having some kind of passive aggressive argument between the step-siblings and the father. Food was great. Would definitely return for a second trip to eat there.
Wonderful service and unique food. Totally enjoyable. Only complaint was that our entrees were not warm enough and had to be sent back. Waiter was accommodating but one would not expect this as a problem at a high end restuarant.
This has been one of my all-time favorites dining spots when I am in San Fran. The food is always exceptional, the service is second-to-none and it is in a word - consistent.
I have never had any issue that I can even mention. I always make this my last dinner when I am visiting so I can purposefully compare all the other places that attempt to do it better...and no one has been able to deliver just quite at the all around exceptional level.
If you are looking for an amazing night, that is not overly pretentious, and worth the few extra dollars you will pay for fine dining, then this is the place you MUST go when in San Fran!
My wife and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary at Farallon. The food, staff and experience were all first class. An excellent restaurant.
Awesome. In one word... Awesome. Great ambiance and atmosphere. Excellent food.
Farallon was recommended on open table and we were looking for a seafood restaurant with a little something special and as visitors to SF we were not disappointed. Delicious food. Vibrant atmosphere Great service. Unique decoration. Highly recommend.
I love trying new foods and unique menu options, however this restaurant is trying too hard to be unique and falls short on creative to quality meal options. The dishes that came out were too weird to enjoy. Presentation was beautiful, ambience was beautiful, service was good....but I won't be eating there again. The prices were high which doesn't bother me when its worth it, but in the case I was not impressed.
The open table reviews have to be fake. The most upsetting part is the opportunity cost. I trusted the reviews and missed the opportunity to dine in San Francisco at a great restaurant. Place is a trap in all respects.
We enjoyed everything from the minute we walked in. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. We ate everything from appetizer, pasta to entrée. We will be back for our anniversary celebration.
We had oysters and a few drinks during happy hour - that was good value!
Dinner - we were first seated away from the main dining area and the staff were very accommodating when we asked for a nicer table.
We enjoyed good food and wine but it was an expensive evening!
The scallops were fabulous.
An Amazing Meal.
Since I was by my onesie, I sat at the bar and had a great time-good conversation with the bartenders, and fellow diners.
The freakin mixed green salad was spectacular. Every bite was scrumptious. A salad that made me stop and savor. Wow.
Then I had the Grilled Swordfish. OMG. Literally a party in my mouth. Prepared perfectly, the sauce was divine, the cellophane noodles were a slick compliment. Add a bottle of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and I was in heaven.
Amazing food, great pairings, recommendations fairly priced. Well worth it!
Great concept. The menu is very thoughtful. The scallops are very well done and the sablefish is tasty. The red wines are good, just not my taste, but the Reisling is very good.
Service is perfect -- attentive enough and not rushed.
I just experienced Farallon for the first time. It will not be the last. The whole evening from beginning to end was excellent in every way. It was a totally enjoyable evening and now to find an excuse to return!
I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant, its food and its attentive and genuine staff and management. My wife's scallops were picture worthy (but wife considered photographing one's dinner gauche) and melt-in-your mouth. I ordered curried swordfish, but should not have, as I am spice-averse. The dining room mgr took it back and asked the chef to tame the spices while retaining the essence of the dish. They bent over backward to accommodate my wishes, and did so quickly. Wait staff strikes a perfect balance of being attentive while not hovering or being pushy. Sommelier selected the perfect wines. This was my second visit from New England, and there will be a third.
We were celebrating our 40th anniversary and I happened to mention that on the reservation. They gave us a welcome card wishing us a great anniversary when we arrived. The service and the dinner was outstanding. Had a very nice bottle of wine to go with dinner. After dinner they brought us a dessert on a plate where they had written in chocolate Happy Anniversary, Very memorable evening and we will definitely go back when next in the city.
Ristorante molto elegante, forse un po’ old fashion. Servizio impeccabile. Cena molto buona pesce freschissimo. Rapporto qualità prezzo buono.
Our party had a great time. We had some out-of-town guests and I wanted to give them a genuine San Francisco experience, I wanted them to have a sense of the Union Square energy and this was the perfect restaurant for it. They were blown away by how beautiful and elegant it was and haven't stopped talking about it since. Yes, it's a little pricey, but it's worth it for a special occasion.
I have loved this restaurant since it opened 20 years ago. I am sorry to say that I will not be back. Food was good not great .... our waiter was gracious. The Sommelier was a pretentious jerk.
Very attentive waiter and interesting food choices
Great!!! Lots of food, amazing bread, fish, desserts and apps. So fun inside as well.
Beautiful decor. Excellent food. Expensive. Service, however, wasn't good enough. My order for oysters was mixed up (still delicious). And the waitress never asked if we'd like more wine, had a curt attitude and never directed any attention to my spouse. Weird. Yet, I could see her fully engaged at other tables.
Beautiful dining room, delicious food. Great dinner out.
Had an excellent dinner, all dishes were fantastic
Swordfish & oysters were excellent. Service was outstanding. Surprisingly, I ordered a coke soft drink but, there was not enough syrup in it. The ambiance is stunning. Nice touches such as Hawaiian salt on the table butter. I do believe though that the pricing was excessive.
Beautiful, romantic, impressive. If you want to impress a classy date, this is the place to be.
We stop in every so often to enjoy the Happy Hour $1 oysters, but this is the first time in years we had a full supper. And we're so glad we did! Everything was excellent from the great butter/bread to the service. Highlights were a blood orange margarita with smoked salt on the rim, a tuna Carpaccio, four spring onion/allium soup, and a banana bread pudding. The tab was high, but we savored every bite.
Nice old world restruant with modern menu. Smelled very fishy which disturbed our dining.
The food was ok. Well cooked but not inspired. Atmosphere a bit haughty, prices high for what was delivered. Charged exceptional price for ok food. Overall a disappointment.
We booked under open table and the special gift for booking was free deserts for the table, which we were charged for.
Very good food (tough competition in San Francisco), exceptional service and very interesting and attractive interior.
Came here last night with my bf and the food was completely disappointing. Overpriced and I think my mom cooks better seafood. I will never come here again.
We had a nice dinner but felt the drinks were rather expensive. Our waitperson asked us if we would like a glass of wine or champagne. We made the mistake of not knowing the cost and one glass of Tattinger was $25!
On the other hand the wait staff could not have been more attentive. It was lovely but more money than we expected to spend for what we ate.
