Soaring above Chicago's skyline on the 40th floor of One Financial Place and under the culinary direction of Chef/Owner Jean Joho, Everest serves some of Chicago's finest personalized cuisine. "Though the restaurant has a spectacular unobstructed cityscape as a backdrop, the food is what commands attention," said Chicago Magazine, which has voted Everest four stars for the tenth year in a row, since Everest opened.

I expected a view from the 40th floor. However, there are two parts to the dining room. The one in which I was seated has a full wall blocking any kind of view. I was at a table in a corner that might as well have been on the first floor as the fortieth. This was disappointing and meant my review is based only on food, wine, and service at $195 for the Tasting Menu plus $145 for the Wine Pairing before taxes and gratuity. Bottom line upfront: It was good but not stellar. The glassware that was used for the wine pairings detracted from, rather than enhanced, the enjoyment. At this price point, I expect an experience that is much closer to stellar. Especially absent a view, I felt the experience was significantly overpriced. Nothing was bad, yet none of the courses elicited a "wow! Things were a little slow to start. It seemed like I waited a long time after being seated to be offered water or a cocktail. Once I (finally) had the chance to order a cocktail, the service afterwards was good. However, I had to ask for a napkin when only silverware was brought to me. I understand that COVID precautions preclude setting the table in advance but felt they should have gotten the silverware and napkins thing down by now. A particular criticism: the white wine pairings come in what look like identical mini-coupe glasses about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of a normal wine glass. The reds also come in either mini-glasses that look closer to a water glass than wine glass or a cordial glass. My guess is that they hope to avoid making obvious the tiny size of the pours. However, even if the pour was just a taste of wine I think it would be more enjoyable in proper wine glassware. I cannot recall being in another high-end restaurant that didn't have wine glasses matched to the types of wine being served. For me, this greatly detracted from the wine.

Food was outstanding. Well seasoned, perfectly cooked, complex dishes. Service not so much. Courses should move at the pace of the diner and we spent a lot of time waiting. Even had to flag someone down for the bill.

Always a special treat dining at Everest--as we have done four times over the past four decades! Service, ambiance, view, food, wine--it's all sublime. Alas, the restaurant is closing soon and our meals there will just be wonderful memories.

I didn't get seated where I requested to get seated. I reserved almost three months in advance in order to secure the table I wanted for my first wedding anniversary. We got sat right by where all waiters convene. It felt like I was eating in the kitchen. I had to ask for a refill. They're custom was to congratulate you on whatever you were celebrating upon arrival and that didn't happen. The waitress just dropped off our check, but never asked how our meal was. I heard her congratulate the table next to us on their anniversary, but we were treated differently. They're closing on December 31 and I will not miss them at all.

The food was not bad, the lobster and the risotto was definitely wonderful. However, it was not worth the money at all. Just be wary that the prix fixed price does not include some of the items listed on the menu, not any drinks, and at its core it’s a good three course meal but not really Michelin star worthy or worth the cost.

What a wonderful experience from start to finish! This was our wedding dinner celebration and the Everest team made this evening the best dining experience ever. The views from the window are amazing and the service and food both top notch. The chef was able to accommodate my special request of creme brûlée for dessert as that is my wife’s favorite dessert. AMAZING!

Jean Joho is a treasure, Everest our celebratory go-to. Three amuses-bouches—broccoli mousse, mushroom bisque and lobster en gelée—lead the way for a beautiful three-game bird marbré; the tenderness of the veal tenderloin entrée rendered the steak knife extraneous; dessert Vacherin with raspberry was a sublime taste and texture delight. The gewurtz and verbena palette cleanser—or pre-dessert—was a delicate, pleasant treat. Wine pairings complemented food choices. Add the view—>voilà, perfection!

We were quite disappointed actually. The menu online was the deciding factor for us to try Everest. How disappointing that on arrival, we were advised it was a set menu. If we’d seen or known about the set menu we could have taken a view, but seeing as we were there already we went with it. The chef did give us some money off if we removed the desserts, as we are more savory which was nice, and the staff were really professional and pleasant. I have to say it wasn’t about the money, it was the restriction on choice. We chose the lobster soup and steak. The lobster was chewy and the steak was too. The food came out way way too quick and we’d literally finished within 45 minutes of arriving. For the price, which ended up being close to $500 it was really unsatisfying and as this was supposed to be a special meal, we felt somewhat short changed . We paid and left instead of making a fuss, but I’m afraid we won’t be returning anytime soon. I understand restaurants are struggling at the moment with Covid. But there is no excuse to serve up mediocre food and charge top dollar prices. You know it’s bad and so do the patrons that eat it.

It had been a long time since I have been to Everest, my favorite go-to for celebrations. Even with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic it again exceeded expectations. It was a little disconcerting to use a Q code for the wine list and the menu but that will be a new norm and much appreciated. There was a special request I had from a meal there many years ago and the wait staff were very accommodating and I was able to share a very fond memory with my daughter, from when she was 12 and served multiple Shirley Temples without being asked if she wanted more. Lobster corn soup, and halibut, yes, more please!

The sommelier was the only one that really interacted with the table. I asked on the reservation for a view, instead small little table on side and i looked at the wall. For a M Star restaurant this was nothing special. Go try some where else for $600 for two people.

We didn't appreciate our food as much as we usually do. A few things on the tasting menu missed the mark. The corn soup was tasty but it overpowered the lobster pieces that came surrounded by it. Tarragon seemed to be too strong on our cod course and the veal, while tender, was plain tasting. The hits of our evening were the amuse-bouche, trio of marbre of duck, pheasant and quail, cheese course of crispy camembert, and our desert of blueberry fromage blanc parfait. As usual the service was wonderful!

The first thing that you notice is the amazing view of the Chicago Skyline. Grab a seat by the window if you can. The tasting menu was delicious and very filling- each dish created and plated with care. Ingredients are simple but fresh and paired well. Sommelier was very knowledgable and recommended a suitable alternative to the wine I ordered when it was unavailable. Overall great experience.

We have been dining at Everest since it opened in 1986. It has always been our favorite restaurant. We always do the tasting menu and wine pairing. The food and service has always been perfect. With the view of Chicago out the 40th floor windows, what more could you want? I have heard some people complain that the portion size is too small. However, that is very deliberate. If you ate 11 full size courses, your stomach would probably blow up and you'd be too drunk to walk. Everest is the best restaurant in Chicago.
