Ettan - Palo Alto
Went to Ettan for our anniversary dinner. The restaurant itself and it’s ambience are extremely classy. A bit on the noisy side, but we didn’t mind it so much. In terms of food, absolutely enjoyed the starters and small plates. Very creative and unique combinations. For the main courses, we didn’t think they were worth the price. You could easily find the same quality of butter chicken or the Vellore chicken curry at any other restaurant for a much reasonable price. However, I believe you’re paying for the experience in it’s entirety. At times we found the service to be a bit slow and I believe our server noticed that, hence felt the need to apologize for the delay in serving the food. While making the reservation, the system asked if we’re visiting for an occasion and if we had any special request. I did specifically mention about the anniversary and requested to have “happy anniversary” written is possible, as the dinner was a surprise for my husband. It didn’t happen, so I was disappointed about that. All in all, I would still recommend the place for special occasions!
Ettan’s decor is gorgeous, the outdoor space is especially lovely—sort of Maghreb meets farmhouse design. The food was hit or miss—our appetizers were tasty, one was truly innovative. The main courses were just ok—some aspects worked others didn’t. Our veggies arrived undercooked, the “one pot” dish was deconstructed and the sauce (separate) was good, but overall the dish was mediocre. We had to return a terrible cocktail and the waiter completely ignored us the rest of the evening. 10 stars for decor but menu and service need to level up if the restaurant expects to be successful over the long term.
Great service. Accommodated our seating requests. Indian food - enjoyed the curried corn soup, sauce on samosas a little on the hot/spicy side for me - used the raita to calm down my taste buds. Love the environment - outside with upside umbrellas high overhead and lots of design on walls.
Best Indian food in Bay Area. Sea bass collar and scallops are good
This place is a must try! The sesame salad and desserts are so unique. We did not order one bad thing! Best butter chicken, Smokey eggplant chutney with the rolls, fried chicken and branzino. Dessert was Lychee Meringue and the cherry burgundy sundae we just couldn’t stop eating!!!
Food was good, but the service was very disorganized, one dish arrived 20 mn before the others, so one in our party had to eat before all the others. The "rack of lamb" to be shared was excellent, but had two small cutlets, one per person. Overall, good food but a bit overpriced and not well organized in spite of the apparently numerous staff.
Do not just surf the hype of being a recent Palo Alto opening, Ettan, keep working.
We were there on a Thursday evening. While the food was tasty and different in a good way, it was served lukewarm. The service could have been more attentive: the only time the wait person was at our table was to take our orders, deliver the check and take the payment. Never bothered to ask us about the food or if we wanted anything else. He almost forgot our cocktails, they arrived well after our appetizer.
Loved the food and the ambiance
Ettan was an amazing place!
service was great, butter chicken was great, roti was okay but overall 11/10 experience
Tasty food with great presentation (especially the Ettan salad and the dessert. We ordered the chocolate bar, which was delicious and even decorated with flowers). The ambience is fancy and original. Cocktails are good too.
What a delightful Indian fusion experience. Everything was delicious.
Ettan never disappoints with food, however their cocktails really need a push. It’s a hit or miss with their drinks. But I love their food so much and I can totally do without their cocktails.
Phenomenal food and drink with beautiful ambience. Excellent service.
One of the best meals we had in recent times. Each dish is unique and well thought of.. definitely our top 5 places in the Bay Area for food
Ettan has been our go-to place for date nights and sometimes even afternoon brunches. We love the fusion menu and love the cocktails as well. The kulchas, sesame leaf and Vellore chicken curry are some of our favorites.
Food and the ambience was awesome. Wish the restrooms were a bit more cleaner.
Great ambience as always at Ettan and finally indoor dining!Food was great as well - slightly overpriced but nothing too much to crib about :) great spot for dates/ special occasions!
Oh very overpriced, portions were small, Several appetizers were forgotten, a request to have all of the food served together was ignored, salads had dressings on them when they were asked to be removed ahead of time, there was an allergen in one of the dishes we had asked to be removed in a request on the phone to the chef and also in person . Having been seated and placing an order with the waiter, I do feel that waiting an hour and 40 minutes for a very small amount of food is an excessive amount of time, unexpected and not acceptable for my dining out experience. I really wanted to love this place but the opposite occurred.
Beautiful space and unique Americanized Indian cuisine. Everything was delicious and service was very friendly
We went here for brunch, driving from san rafael and it was definitely worth it, the food is exceptional and so is the ambiance. Ettan is amongst handful restaurants in bayarea that have amazing takes on Indian food. The jackfruit vadapav was so damn good. Stuffed kulcha was piping hot and, with pindi chhole it was perfect. I just wish they had sweet lassi to complement pindi chole and kulcha. For dessert we had the saffron slice which is their take on kesar pista kulfi it was full of flavour.
Amazing food and atmosphere. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely be coming back.
The food was good. A bit on the pricy side and the quantity is less.
Excellent food and service. Worth the drive to Palo Alto. Consistent with the sometimes mind-blowing flavors one would expect from Chef Srijith.
I love this place. However, the latest visit was underwhelming. We were sat almost out at the exit, which is okay given the busy nature of business on weekends but when we were moved on request the inside table had mosquitos. The level of service also seemed lower than my last visit a couple months prior to the latest one in July. I hope they see this review and get this nice place back to the standards it deserves.
Great ambiance and food, and fantastic service. A bit on the expensive side.
The service was amazing. The sesame leaf chaat and saffron slice are a must!
We loved the food options and the creativity put into traditional Indian food. We will try more small plates and the desserts next time😊
Great and creative food, great atmosphere- their outdoor patio is large and very welcoming. The portions are pretty small but it just means you have room for dessert! Loved it.
Overall everything tasted good 👍
Great service and awesome food. We enjoyed our anniversary dinner :)
waited 30-40 mins to get the main course.
service is definitely good on weekends.
perhaps it was bad only on weekdays.
Courteous, helpful staff, incredible decor and amazing food!
1. The service was very poor! We had come for brunch and requested a portion of the monkey bread. The server, without asking the chef refused to consider the request even though we pointed out that the monkey bread was being served with one of the main dishes.
2. We had explicitly requested to know which items had dairy and which didn't. The server did not give us confidence about some of the dishes not having dairy. As a result, my friend who can't eat dairy ate only the few dishes that he was certain didn't have dairy.
3. In general, the food was good, not excellent. The service was really poor and we found the server mildly rude
We’ve been here 3 times and always love it. Amazing food. It’s a little pricey but definitely worth it.
Enjoyed the causal dining. Food was great! Some items were nit available. Otherwise menu was great.
It is a beautifully done up restaurant and located perfectly. The service from the point of arrival to the server and even the cleaning staff is perfect. There’s a few things which need mention though - the food fell halfway between authentic and experimental. It wasn’t bad but we didn’t find it remarkable. We won’t be rushing back for the culinary experience for sure.
Side note : For a pretty expensive per glass wine pour, we found it amusing that red wine was served in a standard white wine glass.
Absolutely ruined our anniversary dinner! It took our server 45 mins to bring out our dinner. Didn’t bother offering us the dessert menu - I mean why wouldn’t you want dessert on your anniversary!? Such a waste!
Second time I've been here and it has not disappointed yet. The waiter had great suggestions and we enjoyed all the dishes. The Black lentil dumplings need work they are bready and resemble a lentil cake more than a dumpling. But they were tasty
