What Insiders Are Saying
Ethiopic is a casual spot in Shaw. Come for a group dinner, a catch-up with your vegetarian friend, or a late-in-the-game date.
The Asa Tibs is my favorite fish dish anywhere in DC
It was a great experience. Food was amazing service was excellent
The food was good, and the staff were very nice. The only slight issue I had was, despite having a confirmed reservation on Opentable, they pulled a table and two outdoor patio chairs of the back and set us up in a very odd position in the restaurant. My chair was directly in front of the door to the patio. The table itself was really small and it was difficult to accommodate the food and drinks we ordered. The chairs and the table kept slipping so we had to constantly readjust our table and seating. Otherwise, the food was really good and we would go back - hopefully to have a better seating arrangement next time.
It was unique, they tried to accommodate my onion allergy but it was difficult. It was a fun place to try something new.
Unfortunately, because of price, this has to be a once in a blue moon outing. Otherwise, it's a good/out of the box/takes me back to the old Adams Morgan kind of place.
Love this restaurant. I will be dining here again!!
An outstanding experience overall. We had some menu recommendations, but tried a few other entrees also. The honey wine was a good complement to the spice of the dishes. We will definitely be back.
Consistency, conversational quiet and kind staff make us repeat customers
Our favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Washington DC. Love the tibs!
While the food was excellent and certainly authentic, it was far too spicy for some of the group. We should have been alerted to order some definitely non-spicy choices.
Definitely the best Ethiopian in town. Often takes a bit of time for the food to come out, but it's worth it.
Absolutely love it! I’ve never had Ethiopian food before and had such a fun and delicious experience. Definitely recommend the veggie platter. That plus an entree was plenty for two people.
Ethiopic never disappoints! We love having lunch there when in their neighborhood. They easily accommodate groups as well as have smaller tables for couples. The cuisine is just wonderful and tasty and a nice blend of spices. It is perfect for people who like spicy but not too hot (I, on the other hand, may miss a tad of hotness sometimes). There is a variety of dishes to taste from vegetarian options to meat. You can pick individual dishes or sampler platters. I recommend the latter and the fish (Asa Tibs). I love their Ethiopian coffee!
Great food, indifferent service.
We were a party of four on a Thursday night when Ethiopic was about three quarters full. The food was excellent -- especially the lamb tibs, kitfo, yellow split peas and red lentils, however, our experience was soured a bit by slow service. The initial request for a drink order came about 10 minutes after we had been seated. It was difficult to find servers to take additional requests for injera and beverages mid-way through the meal and the check was slow in coming. I can still recommend the restaurant for the food, but the service needs to improve.
I went to this establishment on a business meeting and it was amazing!
I really enjoyed the waitress teaching my colleague and I how to eat the meal with our fingers!
Awesome Ethiopian experience!
This restaurant offers delicious Ethiopian food. I enjoyed their chicken and beef sampler.
Authentic food at good prices. The vegetarian tasting menu is delicious and has a nice variety. Great coffee and a good selection Ethiopian beers and wines. The restaurant has a nice neighborhood vibe and plays good music.
Less food than on previous dinners, with three previous diners there was always some to take home. Not so this time. We didn't leave hungry but the smaller portions were noticeable.
Service was a little slow to start during this visit, but they pulled it together and delivered another great meal. The lamb tibs and fried fish are continual highlights, and are always satisfying.
If you like Ethiopian food, this place is a keeper, but the service was slow. Even for a veteran of many Ethiopian restaurants, the food was spicier than anticipated. Nice decor.
Delicious and authentic Ethiopian cuisine in a cozy space with welcoming hosts and servers. So enjoyable!
Waitress continually ignored our table while assisting the patrons around us. It was remarkable and frustrating.
Very good food for a reasonable price. Fish is a must- so crispy and flavorful!
Not as good as I remembered - service was slow - we had to ask for things twice - and some of the dishes weren't that tasty or were overcooked. The yemisir wat was fabulous.
1st time for 2 couples. Shared the big platter and very tasty. Then we had dessert. I’m not a big fan of Ethiopian food, but having sampled 7 vegi dishes. I know which I like and will come back (within walking) order those with the chicken legs and be delighted! BTW Hubby & I enjoy the concept of meat at a non utensil place cause we have long joked about the chicken leg has a handle
we were celebrating a birthday and the staff honored that with a dessert treat and singing!
Unfortunately, my previous positive experiences dining at Ethiopic were diminished by my recent visit. The service was absolutely abysmal. We were very displeased about the confusion of which server was assigned to our table and the multiple unsuccessful attempts to get out waitress’s attention (without actually yelling “excuse me” there were at least 2 different instances of her walking past our table without even acknowledging our needs). At the end of our meal, we did not see her on the floor so we waited patiently (assuming she was busy with other tasks for other tables). After over 10 minutes, we had to ask a manager to please find her so that we could pay the bill. Even after she brought the bill to the table (and immediately walked away), my date had to find her again and indicate to her that the card was in the bill holder. She left for quite some time and after another lengthy wait, she returned with the receipt and his card. I hope that she improves her service ASAP because I have only ever had wonderful dining experiences at Ethiopic. I’m no longer able to recommend this restaurant to others without telling them to be mindful of the service.
Food was very tasty and the service was great. My new go to Ethiopian restaurant
I have been to this restaurant many times. I live Ethiopian food.
The meal was outstanding. The fried fish was cooked perfectly, in times past it has been over cooked, but no this time. We ordered the fried fish, spicy lamb, the veggie sampler ll and an extra aide of the Tomatim (tomato jalapeño salad). Everything was yummy.
The service has improved. It only took about 10 minutes to receive beers and the tomato jalapeño salad, ie we got it in record time. Lol.
I will continue to frequent this restaurant, the food is good and I love the view from the window seats.
I was so disappointed by the service at Ethiopic. The wait staff was inattentive and we repeatedly had to flag someone down to get service. There was no follow up on drinks, no one checked on us to see if we needed anything or if we liked the food. I am generally not one to write a negative review, but I was so surprised and disappointed, I figured that I would. We live in the area, and despite the fact that the food is good, we will not be back. There is stiff competition in DC, this kind of service will seriously hurt this restaurant.
It was spouse’s birthday and they made the evening memorable. Delicious food, attentive staff, and relaxed atmosphere. The birthday baklava was a nice finish to a great celebration. We were looking forward to the fish but unfortunately it wasn’t available on Thursday’s. Maybe that could be a reconsideration.
Excellent authentic Ethiopian food at moderate price. We arrived early for our reservation and were easily accommodated. There are a variety of national wines and beers, including Saint George’s which allowed my wife and I to reminisce our dining experiences in Addis Ababa. There is limited indoor seating and I imagine with the excellent food it could be very busy at peak times.
Slow service, charged for whole bottle of wine but only had a glass
The food was excellent. We got there during a shift change and the service was very slow, but the waitresses were very sweet. My husband and I split the Vegetarian Sampler for 1 and Signature Beef Tibs. We were very excited that they had gluten free injera. However, they did not tell us there was an up charge and charge us an additional $8 for the gluten free injera (crazy expensive).
Had a cozy alcove to have a nice dinner. The food was delicious
The food and service were outstanding. There was a little mixup on the recording of the reservation, but that may have been because I came more than 30 minutes early.
I used to love Ethiopic, but lately the quality hasn't been as good. The service is always great--but the food just tasted bland.
