I was s frequent consumer of ETETE before the renovations. The first time I tried after they had a private event, second time something else happened. Got in on the third try. Glad I was persistent. The remodel was nice. The menu was cut down a bit but you still are fed well. Prices went up a bit but hell I always thought they were cheap before so now they are charging their worth and who can be upset with that. Always loved Etete and always will.

I've heard amazing things of this establishment and have been anxious to try it since I moved to DC. This restaurant did not disappoint, and over-exceeded any expectation I had entering the door. The ambiance was divine, the craft cocktails were delicious, and the wine list was superb. The crispy-fried whole red snapper was so tasteful and perfectly seasoned, the beef was among the best I've ever had, and the fries appetizer was wonderful — we're still reminiscing on our meal! Mario, our server, was so attentive and very knowledgeable. We will certainly be back! Thank you, Etete!

Very unsatisfied with the packed full restaurant. We reserved tables early this month but was still seated in the window seat where the 90 degree weather had just begun to cool down. The food, if it's actually authentic, was plated nicely but that was the best part of the meal. The drinks were more ice than anything else. My party and I rushed to finish in order to go to another place to have my a filling dinner. The 4 of us ordered 1 appetizer each (which is all they serve per the waiter) but the check was over $150. My advice would be to keep your money and go to an authentic Ethiopian restaurant with entrees and a main course, possibly even dessert. The same waiter never introduced himself, which was surprisingly rude since there are waiters at Denny's that introduce themselves. Maybe it's just a DC thing. I'll never go back and I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless you're looking for expensive lackluster "appetizers"

Good food, but you don't feel "authentic" like you do at other Ethiopian places in & around DC. I get they want to make the place more upscale, and I appreciate "tacos" made of injera, but... where are the Ethiopians? None of the workers nor the patrons. Some may not think that's important, but I do like to see ethnicity when eating ethnic food. I'll stick to my usual spot down the street, Dukem, unless I need it quiet since Etete is much quieter compared to them.

While visiting from Minneapolis, I asked an Ethiopian taxi driver to recommend the best Ethiopian restaurant in DC. His favorite is Etete. I went for an early dinner and had a wonderful meal and exemplary service. I wasn't familiar with the dishes on the menu so server Harry asked questions to determine what I might like. He was spot on, even with the beverage to accompany those dishes. I had the spicy red lentils, smoked carrots & cabbage and lamb stew. Everything was flavorful and had just the right amount of spiciness. Heaven on a platter. Harry was charming and funny and the other staff were friendly and welcoming as well. This restaurant is a little gem that I will frequent when I'm in DC.

Went here for a date last weekend. They gave us a great table for two right in the window and picked up on the fact we were there for a date. The service was quick and accurate, and for the most part they left us alone and let us chat. We really enjoyed the veggie platter. I'd definitely go back!

I like exotic eats and fusion, but I just don't think the fusion here works. It's no improvement on regular Ethiopian, and for someone who is hesitant to try Ethiopian, it's not going to help. It took more than an hour to get the restaurant week menu, which was supposed to be somewhat quicker, and they were out of all the desserts that we ordered. I'd say go for the ambiance and order the most traditional-ish foods. Roasted cauliflower salad and the beets were good. Cocktail and wine menu looked good, too, as did their happy hour specials.

Very good Ethiopian food. We shared lamb stew, red lentils and smoked carrots and cabbage. While the food was excellent, the bespoke cocktails were delicious! Various options that used Ethiopian inspired spices to change and add to the original. Well worth going just for them.

The food was delicious and came quickly - my main concern here is just that it's overpriced. There's so much good Ethiopian food in DC, and this was significantly more expensive without being significantly better. Our waiter suggested that since there were two of us sharing a vegetarian platter that we double up on some of the pieces. We doubled up on lentils and kale, which was a great call, until the check came, and we learned that an extra scoop of lentils and an extra scoop of kale cost of $24. Again the food was great and the restaurant was charming. But it just felt pricier than it needed to be, and that was a bummer.

Food was perfect - they do a great job with the Ethiopian classics, with a few unique additions. Service was attentive and fun, ambiance was intimate but casual, and the location is ideal. It was telling that the place was full of Ethiopian couples - it is the real deal, plus a great for a date.

We enjoyed the cocktails and a delicious veggie sampler platter here. The food was excellent, though pricier than other Ethiopian restaurants in the neighborhood - in keeping with a more upscale ambiance and efforts to do a little bit of "fusion" on the sides menu. The charming owner/namesake was sat in the window seat while we were there and insisted that we have more injera to finish everything in front of us - which we ultimately were too full to do, but it was a sweet touch. I would come back here, especially if trying to introduce this cuisine to someone who is a bit pickier or more skittish, since the servers seemed very good at explaining the food and how to approach it (as they did to the large group eating next to us, who seemed unfamiliar with Ethiopian food!).

Gorgeous renovation. Really beautiful space. I enjoyed the concept of Ethiopian/global fusion. I love Ethiopian food, and liked a different, creative take on it. The teriyaki beef tips were jaw-dropping! My friends and I agreed that they were incredible. Injera chips = tortilla chips = delicious!

We had a very enjoyable dinner - an intro to Ethiopian for my friend. We had the vegetable platter with enjira - spicy red lentils, yellow peas, cabbage and carrots and yellow beets. I had chicken in coconut sauce - fabulous - crispy on the outside, melt in your mouth tender in the inside, coconut sauce delicious. Small venue, not too many tables, quiet, great for catch up conversation. Heartily recommend. One block from U and 10th Street metro exit.

This was a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant... and, they have made the decision to change and let their menu evolve towards small plates, modern American cooking... we went back to Etete for their Ethiopian food and have been a bit disappointed since we could not find the same level of awesomeness we experienced in the past. All in all a good experience !

I dined at Etete a couple times prior to its recent makeover, and the change is for the better. The food is good quality, inventive, well-spiced, and thoughtful. The menu has been remade into tapas portions for the most part, but since we were craving classic Ethiopian we went for the Vegetarian Plate in addition to a couple of the tapas. It was all good... the vegetarian plate was quite pricey at $30, though, and I could have done without the potatoes in the middle. Really enjoyed the red spiced lentils and their take on the fish tacos. And stay for dessert -- the cardamom scented cake was very nice indeed. The service was a little on the scattered side -- the restaurant was still doing some construction upstairs and that seemed to distract the staff, but I won't hold that against them. Oh, and the bar staff? Great eye candy. :) I'll be back.

Excellent service. I especially appreciated his explanations of some of the items. The green lentil rolls, little fish tacos and the red lentils were great. A few of the veggie dishes were pretty bland. They took one off our bill when they saw we hadn't eaten it, which I also appreciate. The meat eaters in the group loved the beef dish. If you order carefully, this place is a fun night out. Price was quite reasonable too.
