About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Neighborhood gem
One of the most celebrated restaurants in the United States, Estela is an intimate downtown bistro from chef Ignacio Mattos that can be experienced in many ways, whether it’s a thrilling dinner in the dining room, a leisurely weekend brunch with friends, or a late-night drink at the bustling bar. Since opening in 2013, the restaurant has served several signature dishes that are now considered New York City classics, while always offering guests something new to try.

Estela holds one Michelin star, among many other major accolades.

From the OpenTable editors: When chef Ignacio Mattos debuted Estela in 2013, New York Times critic Pete Wells called it eccentric in a positive two-star review. That originality is what made the cozy downtown bistro an NYC icon with signature dishes like pillowy ricotta dumplings with thinly shaved raw mushroom and a simply perfect endive salad. Pair your meal with one of the creative cocktails or a pick from the extensive wine list—a meal here will immediately show you why Estela has held a MICHELIN Star for six-years running.

Good food, but was the worse experience I had at Estela of the several times I ate there! Poor service!

Tbh was so excited about this place, but got a bit underwhelmed/disappointed. The food was honestly just OKAY, oyster was great, but that’s really about it. Trout dish mushroom was kinda raw, squid ink rice dish was too salty, overall was just not impressive frankly. I’ve had much better w half/a third of the price. Service is good, cute place but was quite loud, we can barely hear each other.

We are regulars at Estela - we come at least once every 6 weeks. Our service the last two times has been notably downhill compared to the excellent experience we are used to, but last week in particular was not up to a fine dining standard at all. The waiter was particularly rude and abrupt when he came to take our order (first words were “what do you want”). He was not helpful with selecting a glass of wine and never checked on us during our meal. We asked other waiters for refills of drinks multiple times. Very disappointing and while the restaurant holds many special memories for us, we are not planning to return again.

The food is simply exceptional — I get the same things every time but it always feels like my first time ever experiencing the flavors.

I’m French and I have experimented a lot of 1 star… The dishes were tasty and creative but not so merited because it misses a touch of innovation. It’s my opinion By the way, the ambience and the noise level were definitively not an asset!!! It’s like a good « bistro » and for a start, it’s not bad! Bravo anyway to the Chef, but he has to reinvent something!!!

The food was delicious, as always, but the service felt a bit off this time. The attendants seemed a little lost—there were long waits to clear the table, remove plates, and so on. The noise level was also pretty intense, to the point of being genuinely annoying. Overall, the experience felt noticeably more casual than before—but not in a good way.
