This is probably one of my favorite places to eat uptown. So many options and they're all good.
Our app took aver 40 min to arrive we had 10 min to eat that and the entrees that came out late as well we got to eat about a few bites before we had to leave for the show. We were charged based on if they arrived at the table. Said we could speak to a manager but he never came out.
I’m from out of town and my Charlotte friends recommended this place as Enso had closed which was my favorite go to every time I came came to Charlotte...our service was absolutely horrible..we ordered drinks as soon as we sat and it took 30 mins for them to be brought to our table ..meanwhile they had been sitting there for atleast 15 mins ...we ordered 6 dishes total to share amongst the table...it took over two hours for our food to be brought out..we did say it’s fine to bring one or two at a time ...we ordered another round of drinks which were never brought to our table nor on our check bc our server forgot about us. I work in this particular industry so I understand things happen but this was just ridiculous..thank god the food was good bc it’s the only thing that saved this night!
Overall not impressed. Had a reservation for a special dinner and was still seated at a booth in the bar area where we were constantly crowded and bumped into all night. We waited exceptionally long for our orders, to the point where several parties that were seated after us had already gotten numerous various dishes. Staff made no effort to compensate for poor service. The food was good when it arrived but was definitely not worth the cost or wait. This is not a place I would recommend, should have gone to Soul.
Food is always good, but it took forever to get the food. Too many cooks were doing Taste of Charlotte instead of working in the restaurant. (according to waitstaff)
Food was great, it was just my birthday and no one ever said anything to me about it and no dessert or birthday dessert was offered.
The website touts a ‘gastropub’; that’s iffy at best. While the bartender was able to provide good drinks but I wasn’t blown away by the flavors.
The food was okay at best. We ordered many different plates but none was great. Our falafel was burned and flavorless. The sushi roll lacked flavor.
I felt like I was at an Uptown Spot that wanted to do well but just missed it’s mark. I will say all of the staff was very attentive and helpful with us the entire meal. Everyone treated us wonderfully.
The food is great. I love the feel of the restaurant and enjoy the outdoor seating. However, it is so loud. It's really hard to engage in conversation.
A go to for evening drinks or a client lunch.
We were sat and no one came to our table. We ended up leaving because no wait staff ever came to greet us.
poor service- waited extended periods of time for everything. 10 minutes for first visit to table, 20 min for water and eventually took our checks to the bar to be completed
Menu was nice. Interesting items to choose from. Loved the small plate/sharing. That way we could try several items that sounded good. Ordered the kale apple salad and was informed that they were out of the prepped ingredients so no salad. Seafood tacos were flavorless and sauce was so runny it dripped all over. Bang bang grouper was delicious. Had to wait a while after we were done eating for the server to return. The restaurant was almost empty. Ordered flourless chocolate cake from dessert menu of 5 items. Was informed that they were out of that as well. A little disappointed with this experience especially since we had heard so many good things about it.
Mother’s Day Brunch fail...took us 2 hours to get our food, manager did apologize and comped the meal, but I don’t know that we will be back. I’m a fairly new mom and I was excited about celebrating, but was disappointed in the end.
Took my mom there for mother’s day and we both loved the ambiance of the place and the food was great.
The Mother's Day brunch buffet was fabulous! We will be back next year.
We had brunch for Mother’s Day at Essex. It was pretty expensive but the food was good! The brunch buffet was huge and offered many different choices!
Great food ! Was my first time there . Tried lots of wonderful food. Server was a bit slow - had to keep asking to fill our water through the night as well as drinks. Had to wait to order 30 min . But overall was great experience would come back
This was my 3rd time eating at Essex & they have yet to disappoint. Excellent food, prompt & courteous service in nice setting.
The food was amazing. Our service was outstanding. Drinks were delicious. Hostesses were terrible-rude and aloof.
Food was good, but service was horrible. It took 20 minutes to speak with the waitstaff or receive water. Wine did not arrive until after the meal was almost finished. Order was wrong, causing further delays. Restaurant was half empty, but we were told they were backed up. No follow up to check-in or to advise why there was a delay. Waitstaff was not empathetic. After requesting they remove the wine charge, they agreed. This should be proactive and not something the customer should need to request.
Sad as this has been a good restaurant in the past, but service has really declined over the past 4-6 months.
Waited 10-15 minutes to get service. Drinks took longer than appetizers. Missing food we ordered and food that came out was incorrect.
Took 20 minutes to split our checks.
Overall terrible experience for just moderate food.
Waitress wasn’t the best but everything else was spectacular!
This was my third visit and it seemed that the menu has expanded. The food didnt strikes me as fresh lime the last time- seemed too fast to the table to be prepared just for us and a few of the dishes were over cooked
The service was so slow. He was trying to get our drinks out correctly but he didn’t and then it took about 45 minutes to receive our food. Which is awful when you are on your lunch hour...hour being the operative word in that sentence. You can’t take 45 minutes to get the food out when people are on their lunch.
We picked this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. Our waitress and the Manager were amazing to us but the kitchen was terrible. We ordered an appetizer that came out with main course food, I received my food however my fiancé didn't receive his until after twice of asking about it. He then was given completely different tacos than what he ordered. They waited an hour and a half into our experience to tell my fiancé that they were out of lobster for the lobster tacos after we were told several times they were working on fixing their screw up. There were several tables that the kitchen had either messed up their order as well. The manager and our waitress were very apologetic and took the tacos off that we never received however our whole experience was NOT worth the $75.00 that we spent. I chose this place because I believed that it would be good place to celebrate our anniversary and unfortunately this was not the case at all. Very rarely do I give bad reviews but we will not be back to this restaurant due to the reasons listed.
The food was great.....service bad. 3rd time there and all 3 with bad service.
We sat outside but it was still noisy , the noise level inside was awful . Our service was very slow . Our waiter was very nice & and apologized . They seemed understaffed . The value for food we ordered , the beef 16.00 had 3-4 very small ( bite size ) pieces . Grouper was better . My salad was a lot of lettuce little chicken . All in all not a good value for food .& it was just okay
Food was fantastic. Service was slow and non attentive. They didn’t check in until we waived them down for more drinks & then the check. Other guests said it was an outlier that service is typically good. Will come back and give it another shot. Food is worth it
Not very much food for the money. I left $100 poorer and still hungry.
If you’re going for dinner, you better eat something before or plan on spending a lot more because the portions are small and do not come with any sides. We went to another place after to get some real food.
Amazing Menu. Unique Drinks, although very heavy on the ice all the time, so they get watered down quickly.
Food and wait service were great! Terrible check in process. Very disorganized and chaotic. Both hostess could, but would not, communicate with one another or even remember who they just talked to about seating them. No communication between the hostess and wait staff. Was a complete cluster. Don’t know it it was lack of training or merely ambivalence.
Brussels are amazing f
Perfect business dinner for 4
We love this place!! Great food!! Great atmosphere!! But it is not a place for quiet conversation. There are always big groups which tends to make the noise level go up. But its worth it!
My sister was in town and it was both her birthday and my birthday the night of our reservation. I was trying to pick a new restaurant we hadn't been to and that I had heard good things about. I put in the reservation that it was for a birthday and also when my parents got to the restaurant before us they mentioned twice to two different people that we had two birthdays here tonight. We weren't expecting anything crazy but not one single person even acknowledged that it was our birthday. On top of that, I am gluten free and I specifically called a head of time to make sure I could eat there. The person on the phone said they didn't really have any gluten free dishes but that they could modify any dish for me. Not the case when I got there. Our waitress in my opinion was rude and very unaccommodating of my allergy. She basically said there was only two things on the menu I could eat. It felt like I was just a total annoyance to her. Not to mention service was so slow. It was supposed to be a special dinner with the family and it was beyond disappointing. For all those reasons I personally would not ever recommend for special occasions or food allergies. Food was good and everyone liked it but not sure I would want to go back there again either way after that.
Took my fiancé here for his birthday on Sunday. Food was tasty but service wasn't so good and it wasn't even busy at all. It took Victoria a while until she realized that we needed refills. My fiancé's cup was empty for a while so I had to give him my water which eventually needed to be refilled also. She just needs to be more attentive. If she's not when it's not even busy at all, I can't imagine how she is when it is busy. I read other reviews about service being bad and I thought since they weren't busy then there's no way it can be slow but proved me wrong. Like I said food was tasty, but the portion isn't worth the money. I'll only maybe come back for restaurant week where the portion would be worth the price.
Absolutely love the new Mimosa and Bloody Mary bars...this is definitely the new hot spot for brunch!
The food was amazing! However the service was awful. My friends ordered martinis and they “ran out” so served them in wine glasses. I also asked for a sushi menu and was told I got the last one which looked like they was pulled out of the trash. I had friends from out of town that I took there and was so embarrassed.
This was my first visit for a colleague's birthday and the food was amazing. I have passed the restaurant multiple times and we all decided to stop in for the birthday lunch. Great & Exceptional food. Flavors were all on point. I will definitely be back.
