About EN Japanese Brasserie

Experience Japanese dining in a beautiful, authentic Japanese restaurant located in the West Village of Manhattan. We offer the rich traditions of Japanese cooking with Chef Abe Hiroki’s modern yet relaxed style of dining centered around a procession of small plates.

We adhere to the fundamentals of Japanese cooking: respecting the ingredients and their natural flavors, cooking in the moment, and letting the ingredients speak for themselves. We have created an extensive menu, featuring dishes as fresh tofu (prepared six times a night), saikyo miso black cod, stone grilled Washugyu and Wagyu steaks, an assortment of sashimi and sushi rolls and three signature EN Kaiseki tasting menus. To compliment your dining experience, we have developed a list of over 80 sakes and 25 shochus as well as carefully crafted signature cocktails and wine list. Polish your meal off with a choice from 27 Japanese whiskies, a lineup that is hard to beat.

I used to love coming here as the food is consistently good. And ambiance was lovely. But recently the service has been so disappointing and rude. Front of house is warm and welcoming. And this is completely let down by the serving staff who do not smile, roll their eyes when you ask for something and whizz by when you’re waving your arm for attention. What a shame as the food is delicious and fresh. Hats off to the chef but boo to the servers. And it’s gotten expensive. Won’t be back for a while.

Kaiseki dishes were completely lackluster and insubstantial. Service was okay outside of having to wait 20mins for seating despite being on time. Food was served at the wrong temperature and tasteless. Although a regular customer in the past, I will not be returning to En.

Just sublime as always: from the homemade tofu to the Kyoto small dishes to the rice clay pots to the sashimi.

The restaurant was supposed to open at 530. No one was there and they did not seat us till 545. At 6 I told the hostess we had a show and needed to order. She said right away but nobody came. So we paid for our one drink we got from bar while waiting and left. The hostess and waitress were awful

Had a table booked for 3ppl for 2:15pm. Two of us arrived at 2:10pm. We’re seated for 2:17pm only to be told the kitchen closed at 2:25pm. Why they’d take the reservation no one knows. Such bad unapologetic service. We’d to leave and find a new restaurant that would actually serve us food.

Been coming here for years. Fabulous setting and decent food. The staff can be quite haughty and not very obliging. The food is ok but not as amazing as the descriptions or setting would suggest. Definitely the most impressive thing about this place is the interior design (and the sake list!)

my wife and I eat out often and enjoy varied, interesting menus and dishes:
came on the recommendation of friends;
this restaurant is a beautiful setting, spacious and well appointed:
the service from beginning to end was impeccable:
ingredients were very fresh;
presentation varied and truly interesting
preparations were rather bland, all fish tasted the same;
as the night went on, noise level became very loud to the point of being irritating;
we had two of the three special menus, they were both disappointing;
too expensive for the quality of the food;
will not recommend or return
there are much more appropriately priced options in New York;

Did the $80 tasting menu with the $45 sake and shochu pairing on Saturday night. The mixed reviews of En make sense; the food is excellent and the portions are appropriate for the price. Interesting vegetable-based first course with japanese mushrooms and radish in a ponzu-like sauce, fried tofu and seaweed in a shichimi togarashi spice soy, and kabocha with tofu sauce. The next course was the only disappointment- 6 pieces of sashimi, two solid salmon, two boring lean tuna, and two yellowtail that was so lean and tough it could have been fluke. The miso cod, fresh tofu, and stone-grilled chicken that followed made up for the disappointing fish. The sake pairings were extremely small servings, but the quality and diversity were satisfactory. The service was downright abysmal. Poor timing, a wildly confusing parade of multiple waiters, bussboys, and attendants meant that after an initial check-in, our waiter was nowhere to be seen even when we physically got up to try to get our bill. Timing of dishes was completely off, with some coming before we'd finished the most recent course, and one taking more than 15 minutes to arrive while we sat and stared at the giant branch sculpture in the middle of the dining room. Can't decide if we'll try again at the sushi bar or a table, or if the service issues make this $160/pp meal not worth the cost.

I don't usually write reviews, but this time I just had to - such a disappointment and a waste of good money. The menu was so exhausting we decided to go with the tasting menu - it was extremely disappointing. Not even one dish was good. A couple we couldn't even finish... almost everything came out cold as if it was just taken out from the fridge and just put on our table. Service was ok, but no wonder - restaurant was half empty. Although the waiter didn't even care that half of the dishes was almost untouched..
Not going to return for sure.

Absolutely loved dining at En Japanese Brasserie! Creative, extensive and well balanced menu with attention to detail and flavor. Great atmosphere with ample space (not crowded sitting ontop of other tables). Attentive waitstaff. Huge sake selection to sample from too! We couldn't have been happier with our first visit.

It was my husband's 40th's birthday. it was a special dinner and the food was just ok especially for the price. From the first dish I knew it was going to be bad, the sushi was served at a freezing temperature and the space was huge but also freezing cold. They gave me match powder mix with water when I asked for matcha green tea. I got sick from that.

The decoration is nice, it is a quiet place. We went there for lunch. We ordered all seven small O-banzai dishes, the kaisen don and the truffle chawanmushi. Most of the O-banzai dishes were flavourless, or felt like they needed to be served hot, except for the pork belly which was delicious. The kaisen don (sashimi and rice essentially) was quite bland, not even as good as in everyday japanese restaurants, for 27 dollars. The truffle chawanmushi was not bad (28$) thanks to the truffle, but was nothing extraordinary, a simple egg cream with truffles. Overall, it was quite expensive and not even as good as your average japanese restaurant. Also, we were quite cold although we had sweaters on.

The food sounded a lot more interesting looking at the menu than it turned out to be. Each dish had an element that tasted good, and everything was well made, but it just felt like there was something missing every single time. I understand that Japanese food can be best when it’s very simple, but if you’re going to do simple you gotta keep it from ending up bland and boring. After five small plates we were quite disappointed, especially when considering how much money we spent. Lots of other places in the city at this price that serve amazing and interesting food.

We go to En frequently and generally we like it. We went last Sunday and it was drafty and cold. Not only my wife and I but all of the people at the counter with us were wearing our coats through dinner except for one man who had on a sweater and a scarf wrapped around him! We spoke with the manager who said the heat was on and did nothing to adjust it or address the issue or even to apologize. Not likely to go back this winter.

VERY expensive, and drink menu needs a lot of work. Cucumber cocktail {Luksusowa vodka, lime juice, black pepper, salt rim}
($15) used cheap vodka and did not taste premium. The Agave {Vida Mezcal, El Tesoro tequila, Golden 8 pear liqueur, ginger, honey, grated cinnamon, lemon} ($18) was a complete bore and had a flat flavor profile. Drink menu is unimaginative and I felt cheated.

Raw Tuna & Avocado Salad {Big Eye tuna and avocado with wasabi soy dressing} ($22) was bland. They have avocado on everything at this restaurant. The salad 'dressing' was totally tasteless.

Saikyo Miso Black Cod {broiled Alaskan black cod marinated in saikyo miso} ($26) was different from the one at Nobu but similarly tasty.

We tried 3 rolls: Anago Bozushi {grilled wild conger sea eel with sweet shoyu cucumber} ($20); Aburi Salmon & Avocado {with shiso and okra, yuzu kosho soy sauce} ($20); and Magurozuke Taku {marinated tuna and daikon pickle roll with shiso and katsubushi bonito flakes} ($22).

The Eel was the best-tasting of the lot. Pass on the salmon, which was one-dimensional. Tuna was okay, and had an interesting (crunchy) texture.

They never brought us soy sauce (which I don't even enjoy), but I have never been to a sushi restaurant where soy sauce had to be REQUESTED!

Dessert was matcha white chocolate Tiramisu ($10), which was very good.

Service is incredibly haphazard here and we never quite figured out who our waiter was. You are truly left to fend for yourself at this place.

NOT RECOMMENDED.

Came here for lunch. When we got seated we were a bit rushed,but after we explained we liked to take our time and we had nowhere to go the sever was very helpful. Yes, food is expensive, but it was worth it. Kobe beef melted on your tongue and sashimi was super fresh. The Fugu fish special may have been a tad bit overpriced for the experience but all in all a great meal. Would come again, albeit with spending a couple of hundreds of dollars for two, maybe not every week.

The atmosphere is very calm. It was a quiet and elegant space. I had the black miso cod for lunch which came on a tray with a collection of other small dishes. All the dishes complemented each other and were perfectly executed. The tofu, in particular, was lovely. I also enjoyed an unusual Yuzu and St. Germain cocktail that was delicious. If you are looking for a sophisticated lunch experience- this is the place!
