What a wonderful dining experience. Rarely do you find food this good, service this good, and a staff so well informed about their food and drink all in one place. Best dining experience I’ve had in a long time.
Had six course meal with wine pairings. All courses and wines were explained very well. Service was outstanding. Just a great meal/experience.
It is difficult to describe the vibe at Empire State South, closest I can come up with is French farmhouse.
We selected the 4 course, chefs menu and included the wine pairings. The menu and experience was amazing.
The sophistication of the selections was only complimented by the stories about each dish and the history of each of the wines. It is rare that every member of a restaurant is so well versed in every aspect of the experience. The presentation pulls you in and leaves you feeling like you are part of a journey that you would only have if you were traveling the world and living it.
I really can’t saw enough great things about this restaurant.
Definitely a great date place and will be adding this to my top 10 list.
Staff was great - I feel for them having to explain the carefully made dishes through their masks - but they do so with a good bit of cheer. Keep up the great work. Solid wine pairings for the 6 course tasting menu, and huge thanks to the somm for sharing a stellar CDP red. Very cool gnocchi dish as well. Would like to revisit.
Delicious and inventive. Sommelier is great. Staff knows and cares about their food.
Wesley and Steven were amazing hosts to a mouth savoring 6-course meal (3-4oz portions/course). The wine pairing was spot on with the hosts providing background on the wines and pairing rationale. Loved it! I believe the 4-course option comes with smaller portion sizes (2-3oz).
I had the 6-course tasting menu with wine pairings. It was an exceptional meal! I was able to sub gnocchi from the 4th course and have it for the 5th course since the menu offered all meat for that course, and I am pescatarian. It was fun to learn about the different wines that were paired with the food. We also had a complimentary appetizer course with wine pairing. The food is incredible, so seasonal and impeccably thought out and prepared. We sat outside on their lovely patio and enjoyed the evening so much. Highly recommend!
The cuisine was expertly prepared. Alex was a great server and Steven, the somm, was right on when it came to pairing the wines. We have gone before and will go again.
Food was great service was wonderful!
Started with cocktails and oysters. Delicious tasting menu locally seasonal ingredients and wine pairings. Beautiful outdoor seating. Couldn’t be better. Lovely evening
We were here in 2019 and liked it very much. Not so much know because of the new format of the menu . Desserts are the weakest part.
Not sure if we would recommend it.
Great space, almost too quiet, but the food is exceptional and creative in terms of mixing flavor and texture.
I was disappointed with the new price fix ($70 and $100) options that made me order dessert when I didn’t want it. I asked for two apps instead and the second one was 1/3 of the portion size (not half 1/3). This was petty and rude. After spending that much to try to save a couple dollars- not planning on going back.
The 4-course tasting menu was perfection! Highly recommend, especially for foodies!
We had the 6 course prefix and I wouldn't change a thing. Everything was absolutely delicious, but by far my favorites were the duck and fois gras. Service was fun and friendly. Can't wait to go back
Beautiful night for outdoor dining.
Perfect mix of casual experience with fine dining.
Great evening! Excellent food and service.
Chef Daniel came to our table, Pascal our Server did great, right on point, food amazing, wine selection was fantastic,
Craft cocktails were perfect.
We will be back
Nice atmosphere and friendly knowledgeable staff.
A wonderful dining experience! 4 courses with perfect wine pairings. We learned, we tasted and we were completely satisfied. Thank you!
We went for the tasting meal with wine pairings for my husband's birthday, and everything was perfect. I like the fact that the tasting meal gives you a choice of four items for each course. Food was all-around excellent. I especially liked the oxtail stroganoff. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Our waiter managed to tell us about each wine without sounding pretentious--an achievement.
Fantastic! Could not recommend more, will be going back the next time in town
Alex was such a great host/server 😊
I do not like their new "tasting menu" format. Everything about it drives you to spend more money. The food was fine, but the prix fixe, the confusing 20% service charge, and the high price of wine by the glass (they did not bring us a bottle list) made for a very expensive night.
We had the tasting menu and it was fantastic. The knowledgeable wait staff were awesome.
fantastic dining experience. We enjoyed the 4 course meal with the wine pairings, and it was outstanding. Food was exceptional, and the service was some of the best I have ever had anywhere, and we are fortunate to be able to dine out frequently. I forget her name, but our server was a young black lady, who knew the menu inside and out, and knew lots of detail about each dish, and wine pairing. She made an outstanding meal, and outstanding experience.
The six course tasting menu has many options to accommodate all types of dinners and the wait staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu, which was clearly sourced from surrounding area. A little pricey, but great for a special occasion.
I am sad to say this was one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in a very long time. I suppose I’ll start with what was good about the meal. We dined outside and the restaurant space both inside and out was great. It was clear a good deal of time and money was spent on the decor of the restaurant. It was definitely in line with what I would expect of an intown restaurant at this price point.
The food and the service is where I all went wrong. When two people dine at a combined cost of about $300, I have certain expectations. I have to say the presentation of every dish was truly a work of art. If only the flavors were reflective of the presentation. In addition to everything we ate being bland and uninteresting, one of our courses was brought to the table before we’d even finished the one before it - and neither of us are slow eaters. This food was not delivered by our waiter and at least the waiter recognized the mistake and had the plates removed until we were ready. However, a restaurant attempting to be at the level of Bacchanalia should know better.
I definitely don’t mind paying a premium for an excellent dining experience, but I can’t say anything about this meal makes me want to return. It’s especially sad since this is within walking distance to my home.
I didn't have high expectations after reading some reviews, but even at that, what a gross disappointment. We spent $350 for the six course tasting and had some wine - I honestly would've been happier with Chick Fil A. The food was bland and salty, lacked quality, depth, creativity and was just not good. I was hoping that maybe dessert would at least be good, but no such luck.
We went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary!!!
The ambience and interior is not something remarkable but the food is just WOW.
The experience is awesome with friendly servers and delicious food with wine pairings.
Loved the dessert and Farm egg is a killer dish, must order.
The tasting menu is my absolute favorite! I could eat it over and over again. In fact I had doubles of what course! Get the wine pairings - the sommelier is very knowledgeable which is always a plus! Cheers!
Food and Service was great. We had the 4 course dinner with wine pairings. Very relaxed atmosphere and servers were very attentive. Portions were perfect amount.
Absolutely amazing food and service!!
Every course, every bite was absolutely splendid! WOW! We did the tasting - 4 courses along with wine pairings. Thanks to the staff and chef for such great food and great service!
Outstanding experience - the staff was warm and attentive the whole 2 1/2 hour service. Our Somm Stephen was incredible - a wealth of knowledge and history who told great stories about each wine (which was paired exquisitely with the food). Each course was inspired and so well executed. Having eaten at ESS several times over the past decade, this was hands down the best experience we’ve had. ESS has once again cemented their status as one of the best restaurants in the south. In short, we will be back!
Even better than before! New fixed price format provides ESS with a very focused menu. Got 8 courses (btw 2 people). Each one was A+
The 4 course tasting was delicious!
We really enjoyed the tasting menu. Everything was delicious! However we do hope they bring back the regular full menu at some point.
Good food but very small portions for such a big price tag. Did a taster event for $70 and got 3 salmon sashimis, 2 shrimps, two slices of filet mignon and one piece of cheese.
It was good food but too expensive for what they served. Would have been better if there was a bit more food in portions.
Recommended. Good for foodies. Great wine list. Near Piedmont Park.
Always an amazing culinary experience and the cocktails are outstanding - from the adventurous to traditional. Service is also always friendly and outstanding.
