My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by our experience at Empire State South this past weekend. It was our first time in and we found ESS after searching for "foodie" restaurants in Atlanta. Based on past reviews, we were a little hesitant but wanted to give it a try as an Anthony Bourdain acclaimed restaurant! The staff was great. We chose the 4 course dinner with wine pairing. The wine pairings were delicious, and what a fun experience! The star of the show was the Foie Gras and Crispy Rice. Would definitely recommend for a unique dinner night out.
WOW! It's been years since we dined at ESS. Usually not a fan of prix fixe menu because limited items I like/will eat; this menu was FAB! 4 choices in each course and 2 in each that I would eat (can't eat fish, don't eat granny meat). We also did the wine pairing & highly recommend! The Somm's knowledge and ability were impressive and on point! Again, the FOOD WAS AMAZING! We plan to go back regularly as well as take out asap! SO DELISH. (still thinking about the Farm Egg, Pork Belly & grits (which was actual pork, not just belly!), Salad (yes the salad) & blueberry crisp i.e. cobbler with less crust).
Great outside patio on a Fall Atlanta Day !
Love that we found this little gem in the middle of Midtown. The outdoor seating is very good and, even though you can see 10th St, it's very quiet and peaceful there. The food is excellent, though I hope they start serving a full menu, instead of just the two prix fixe options, for dinner soon. Our server was absolutely the best I've had in a long time and even though the vibe of the place is pretty casual, our flatware was replaced in full between each course.
This was such a nice treat for my husbands birthday! Wesley was so kind and easy to talk with. The food was phenomenal and the drinks were lovely.
Visited this restaurant on a random Tuesday after work. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to try their 4 course ($70 per person) or 6 course ($100 per person) meal menu option. We went with the 4 course being that we didn't plan to eat heavy that night. Our waitress was super nice and knowledgeable. She offered us a complementary pre-entrée making it a five-course meal by the end of the night. l of the dishes we tried were delicious. My favorite dish had to be the Arugula Salad with pickled red onions (i requested to have the candied pecans removed from my salad) and my friend had the summer salad. My least favorite had to be the Farm egg w/ crisped rice, chanterelle, cork and speck as well as the seared scallops. The scallops by itself was okay but all the other stuff that came with it like corn, okra etc was not to my liking. The farm egg that my friend is definitely an acquired taste as well, not so much our foretaste. It was disturbingly crispy. I probably should've ordered the pork belly w/ grits as I originally intended. For the main entrée my friend ordered duck and I ordered bear creek beef, which is pretty much an order of steak w/ asparagus covered in thick butter.
The ambiance of this restaurant was great! Had a 20's/30's feel to it. All of the servers and staff were very kind, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was absolutely delicious! The portions looked small (we had the 4 course) but by the time we were done with dinner we were stuffed! Everything overall was amazing! The pricing is a little high in my opinion, but it will not stop us from going back for another anniversary meal!
I took my wife here to celebrate her birthday, and we were not let down. We had the four-course meal, and my wife had a glass of wine.
The food was deliciously fresh, and our server Shar made sure the night was Impeccable. We initially sat indoors but then requested outdoor seating, which had the perfect ambiance. We were stunned by each course that arrived at our table.
The staff at Empire State South surprised my wife with two celebrations gifts. The tokens made my wife feel even more unique, and I couldn't have asked for anything more.
Our server Shar was highly knowledgeable about each dish. She explained each dish thoroughly and made recommendations outside of what I would usually try. Thank you for your guidance. I would recommend Empire State South to anyone looking for great food, good drinks, and excellent hospitality.
Special occasion- Yes
Date night- Yes
Cocktail night- Yes
4course dinner before theatre…wonderful experience!!!
Meal was good but uneven. Some courses delightful and some just didn't stand out . Asked for a bottle of wine not on wine list ... asked for price but in our rush that became overlooked. Ended up as $100 per bottle ... will be more cautious if there is a next time .
The weather was amazing so we were able to sit outside. The staff was fun and the food was perfect. I was hesitant on having to do the tasting menu but it made the experience even better.
Four us for the new prix fixe menu and every course was outstanding. From appetizers to the amazing pot de creme we loved everything (although duck was very tasty but a bit on the lukewarm side). Feels like this old standard has written a new chapter in its life. Can’t wait to go back.
Date with friends
Menu choices for the four course prix fixe were extensive - something for everyone in our party of seven, including one vegetarian.
Most of the execution was also good, but the third course was universally tepid, not hot. Staff may have been shorthanded, as there was also a noticeable delay between 2nd and 3rd courses.
Server assigned to our table appeared to be new - was confused about which glass paired with which of the four bottles of wine we ordered. Also, had to be flagged down for the check.
Finally, the policy of an applied tip is BS when applied to wine that was ordered without any help from the sommelier (at 75 years of age, I'm ok with my own choices).
ESS is a good restaurant with outstanding ambience, especially outdoors. Needs some fine-tuning to be great.
A neighborhood favorite we were not thrilled to have new 4 or 6 course only menu options, but we decided to give it a try.
We just don’t eat that much. I was happily satisfied after course 1 and 2. The food was delicious, prepared to perfection. Presentation A+ and as always the waitstaff was impeccably engaging and professional.
It’s definitely a dining experience. Sadly for us it was just too much food to be back as local regulars. Rare that we would split one dessert, we ended up with three due to a delivery snafu. Granted we couldn’t finish any plate, any course but the Salted Caramel was out of this world.
We had a party of 4 and did the four course tasting with wine pairing! It was phenomenal food, over the top service experience! Would recommend it to anybody!
With friends before Hamilton at The Fox. The staff asked if we were there for the show so they could watch the time. They suggested the 4 course over the six. We did that with the wine pairing. It was superb. All of us chose different dishes for each course, everything was delicious. My favorite was the egg on rice. Perfectly poached over crispy, flavorful rice. Incredible. Tried wines from Rieslings to Champagne to red blends. It was a wonderful start to a memorable evening.
What a wonderful dining experience. Rarely do you find food this good, service this good, and a staff so well informed about their food and drink all in one place. Best dining experience I’ve had in a long time.
Had six course meal with wine pairings. All courses and wines were explained very well. Service was outstanding. Just a great meal/experience.
It is difficult to describe the vibe at Empire State South, closest I can come up with is French farmhouse.
We selected the 4 course, chefs menu and included the wine pairings. The menu and experience was amazing.
The sophistication of the selections was only complimented by the stories about each dish and the history of each of the wines. It is rare that every member of a restaurant is so well versed in every aspect of the experience. The presentation pulls you in and leaves you feeling like you are part of a journey that you would only have if you were traveling the world and living it.
I really can’t saw enough great things about this restaurant.
Definitely a great date place and will be adding this to my top 10 list.
Staff was great - I feel for them having to explain the carefully made dishes through their masks - but they do so with a good bit of cheer. Keep up the great work. Solid wine pairings for the 6 course tasting menu, and huge thanks to the somm for sharing a stellar CDP red. Very cool gnocchi dish as well. Would like to revisit.
Delicious and inventive. Sommelier is great. Staff knows and cares about their food.
Wesley and Steven were amazing hosts to a mouth savoring 6-course meal (3-4oz portions/course). The wine pairing was spot on with the hosts providing background on the wines and pairing rationale. Loved it! I believe the 4-course option comes with smaller portion sizes (2-3oz).
I had the 6-course tasting menu with wine pairings. It was an exceptional meal! I was able to sub gnocchi from the 4th course and have it for the 5th course since the menu offered all meat for that course, and I am pescatarian. It was fun to learn about the different wines that were paired with the food. We also had a complimentary appetizer course with wine pairing. The food is incredible, so seasonal and impeccably thought out and prepared. We sat outside on their lovely patio and enjoyed the evening so much. Highly recommend!
The cuisine was expertly prepared. Alex was a great server and Steven, the somm, was right on when it came to pairing the wines. We have gone before and will go again.
Food was great service was wonderful!
Started with cocktails and oysters. Delicious tasting menu locally seasonal ingredients and wine pairings. Beautiful outdoor seating. Couldn’t be better. Lovely evening
We were here in 2019 and liked it very much. Not so much know because of the new format of the menu . Desserts are the weakest part.
Not sure if we would recommend it.
Great space, almost too quiet, but the food is exceptional and creative in terms of mixing flavor and texture.
I was disappointed with the new price fix ($70 and $100) options that made me order dessert when I didn’t want it. I asked for two apps instead and the second one was 1/3 of the portion size (not half 1/3). This was petty and rude. After spending that much to try to save a couple dollars- not planning on going back.
The 4-course tasting menu was perfection! Highly recommend, especially for foodies!
We had the 6 course prefix and I wouldn't change a thing. Everything was absolutely delicious, but by far my favorites were the duck and fois gras. Service was fun and friendly. Can't wait to go back
Beautiful night for outdoor dining.
Perfect mix of casual experience with fine dining.
Great evening! Excellent food and service.
Chef Daniel came to our table, Pascal our Server did great, right on point, food amazing, wine selection was fantastic,
Craft cocktails were perfect.
We will be back
Nice atmosphere and friendly knowledgeable staff.
A wonderful dining experience! 4 courses with perfect wine pairings. We learned, we tasted and we were completely satisfied. Thank you!
We went for the tasting meal with wine pairings for my husband's birthday, and everything was perfect. I like the fact that the tasting meal gives you a choice of four items for each course. Food was all-around excellent. I especially liked the oxtail stroganoff. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Our waiter managed to tell us about each wine without sounding pretentious--an achievement.
Fantastic! Could not recommend more, will be going back the next time in town
Alex was such a great host/server 😊
I do not like their new "tasting menu" format. Everything about it drives you to spend more money. The food was fine, but the prix fixe, the confusing 20% service charge, and the high price of wine by the glass (they did not bring us a bottle list) made for a very expensive night.
