Outstanding experience - the staff was warm and attentive the whole 2 1/2 hour service. Our Somm Stephen was incredible - a wealth of knowledge and history who told great stories about each wine (which was paired exquisitely with the food). Each course was inspired and so well executed. Having eaten at ESS several times over the past decade, this was hands down the best experience we’ve had. ESS has once again cemented their status as one of the best restaurants in the south. In short, we will be back!
Even better than before! New fixed price format provides ESS with a very focused menu. Got 8 courses (btw 2 people). Each one was A+
The 4 course tasting was delicious!
We really enjoyed the tasting menu. Everything was delicious! However we do hope they bring back the regular full menu at some point.
Good food but very small portions for such a big price tag. Did a taster event for $70 and got 3 salmon sashimis, 2 shrimps, two slices of filet mignon and one piece of cheese.
It was good food but too expensive for what they served. Would have been better if there was a bit more food in portions.
Recommended. Good for foodies. Great wine list. Near Piedmont Park.
Always an amazing culinary experience and the cocktails are outstanding - from the adventurous to traditional. Service is also always friendly and outstanding.
Great place and service!!
Excellent cocktails and wine service!
Knowledgable staff and got exactly what I came for. Delicious tasting with great wines.
The tasting menu was just perfect! Good choice for my pescatarian diet and my meat-loving husband, all delicious and uniquely prepared. The wine pairing was great as well - think we found a new favorite red! We sat outside, which is generously spaced so we had privacy. It was covered so no worries about sunburn and the outdoor space has a nice breeze. (For windy weather, you may want a jacket and to keep an eye on light items like menus.) highly recommend.
I absolutely LOVED this restaurant! The service was phenomenal and the food was delicious! We did the 4 course tasting menu with the wine pairing and everything tasted so good! The pairings were perfect for each course! The service was very friendly, courteous, and quick! I couldn't have asked for a better experience!
The service by Allison P. was exceptional. She was a pure delight. We enjoyed the four course option and everything was paced perfectly. The food was AMAZING. The cocktails and wine, also delicious.
Best restaurant experience I have had in Atlanta in a long time. The food and service was beyond excellent.
The food was, as always, incredible. However, the service was terrible. It took over an hour to get one course, and the four courses overall took three hours. I expect better from Empire State south
Presentation of the food was top notch.
Each course had distinct Excellent flavor profiles.
They are European portions and you will leave satisfied bit not overly full.
Will definitely return.
Overall, a positive dining experience. Recommended.
Great service and food.
I really enjoy this restaurant and am so happy it is staying the course as their location is not easy to find. I live in Midtown and have told many people over the years where they are as they wander around the 999 building.
We sat outdoors. I always note things like dead plants and not paying attention to details and saw some of this on the patio. It would not take too much to make the seating out here a bit more inviting. Service stalled for a while but I know staffing in the industry is so tough right now. The pricing guide should have $$$ - three of these as their entree (larger size) portions start close to $30. Always a yummy cocktail but a few things to tend to before a 4 or 5 star overall. Thanks.
The snack board and drinks were amazing! We ordered small places for dinner and they were SMALL, but fresh and full of flavor. We interacted with a few of the team members and everyone was equally pleasant. Next time we are in ATL, we will be back!
Great server, great food!
One of the worst dining experiences. Inside was nearly empty on a Friday evening and had to flag down people for service. Pre mixed cocktails and no bar is a big killer and underwhelmed by every bit of food. Maybe new management? Used to be weekly customers; but, will not be going back.
The service was prompt and very knowledgeable. All of the food and drinks we ordered were delicious. The outdoor area was lovely — well spaced out and covered with both heating lamps and fans available for optimal climate control. Will definitely be back!
Knowledgeable and friendly staff, with a heart for serving good food in a fresh way. They made it easy for us to enjoy ourselves.
Great night out with friends. We sat inside and our table was far away from anyone else. We felt very safe and appreciated all the covid protocols they had in place. The food was amazing and came out in a timely manner. Service was spot on. I can't count how many times I've been to ESS, and each time, I leave so happy that I chose to dine there.
Great ambiance and social distancing in the courtyard with amazing food and wine. Will be a go-to spot going forward.
We have eaten here a few times and always has been good. On this occasion, they were out of a few things (inc 4 cocktails) on the menu. The food was subpar, very bland and average at best
This place used to be fantastic. Special. Now it's a pub. I had a buffalo chicken sandwich and I think it was the best thing on the menu. Sad.
Good food. Nice ambiance as always. Lower noise level than normal made it perfect for our Valentine's dinner.
My wife and I have been going to Empire State South for many years. In fact, we got engaged here. Unfortunately, it seems our once loved restaurant has changed executive chefs. We were extremely disappointed in the food and beverage offerings.
The sample board pales in comparison to once was called “ESS In Jars.” All of the drinks were pre-made. I asked for a French 76, and was disappointed that my request could not be accommodated. The Farm Egg that we enjoyed so much in the past had be reduced to nothing but a bowl consisting of mostly mushrooms. The absolute worst part was our main entrees. I had the filet; which was 2 thin slices of filet. Typically I would expect at least a 6oz filet for a main dish. This was the most measly portion of steak/filet I have ever had. The portion size was suitable for a child’s menu. My wife had the duck; which was extremely tough and hard to chew.
I do not think we will be going back in the future. Regrettably disappointed.
Great service, transcendent food! The perfect mix of fine dining and good vibes. Staff was knowledgeable, helpful, and respectful of pandemic public safety protocols. Food was creative and impeccably executed.
Get the pimento cheese; it's very good. Great cocktails with the punch selections being my go-to.
ESS never disappoints. The food is reliably good and the service is always solicitous. Our server Cole was excellent, making sure we well taken care of.
These guys are covid hyper sensitive. I’ve eaten in many different countries and nearly everywhere around atlanta and I’m not aware of another single restaurant who forces you to wear a mask nearly at all times. When the food came out they pretty much threw it on the table and ran away like they were feeding rabid dogs. Suggestion to management - go conduct some diligence of what others are doing around town and relax or don’t open.
Great and funny staff ! Food was great and the drinks was amazing.
The staff was extremely diligent about social distancing and guests are asked to wear masks during all interactions. We were very impressed with their protocols and the food was incredible!
New Years Eve 7-course tasting menu was so so. Amuse of Latkes were tasty but too hard and not fresh. Beef tartare was excellent! Beet salad good. Tagliatelle was very good. Collard and crowder pea soup was fantastic! Celeriac en croute was cold and boring. Duck was good. Scallop was boring. Strip steak was overcooked and tough and even the remake was inedible. Buy better beef! Apple tart and chocolate tart were good. Coffee was good but not hot. Service was excellent and manager was very nice and accommodating.
Great as always. Safest dinner we had during the pandemic.
Empire State South is always our spot for a nice family dinner. The food is locally sourced, beautifully prepared, and delicious. In Covid times, they’re more thorough with their precautions than anywhere else I’ve seen. We will continue coming back because they are amazing!
Thanks for all of the positive words and feedback! We hope to see you soon as well.
