What Insiders Are Saying
As we’re all well aware, Mexican food in Manhattan generally blows. Empellon hasn’t come to save the day, but it isn’t adding to the problem either. While nothing blew us away, the food was solid with the good outweighing the bad.
Jammed into a loud space. $10 tacos that are good but can get the same or better for way cheaper. $26 guacamole that was so so. So loud and cramped not worth it. Overall there are plenty of better Mexican options
It was very good though service could have been a tiny bit more attentive
The wait staff were super friendly and knowledgeable, the best part of the experience. Sadly the food was wanting. While the menu looked adventurous and seemingly reaching into the current modern leanings of cultural foods such as this, the taste and execution just wasn’t there and underwhelming. And for the quality of the dishes to be the way they were, I didn’t feel the cost was justified, which was I thought on the high end. Great margaritas though, and nice location. Lastly, the noise level was deafening at best, we had to yell to talk amongst ourselves. I won’t be back nor recommend, sorry.
RE: FOOD :Selection was awful.
Duck Taco's = Bland
Lamb Taco's = Too much heat (perhaps paprika). Good candidate dish for acid-reflux.
No starches offered as sides, like rice or even beans.
RE: Service : Waiter forgot my 2nd wine, although he did make up for it.
RE: Ambiance: Great place to go if you want to shout as a means of communication.
Overall, considering the money I spent there. It was a total disappointment.
The tacos were quite bad, I'd go to the food truck on 7th ave any day over this. High prices, indifferent service, crowded and noisy. We won't come back.
Absolutely delicious food!! Fun and tasty drinks. Our waiter was amazing and very knowledgeable of the menu and offerings. He made great recommendations. Can’t wait to go again!
Everything was excellent but please bring the prawns back to your menu.
Guac with 7 salsas were great as was the brussel sprouts taco. Will definitely be back.
COOL VIBE, GOOD DRINKS AND FOOD - GET THE CHICKEN AND THE GAUC!!
We love Empellón! The food is amazing and they always take great care of us. Omar is amazing!
I think their menu has been updated and it’s very good, we had a very nice brunch here
Loved it! Food and drinks were fun and fabulous. Definitely will go back!
The food, service and atmosphere were each top notch. Highly recommend.
But it is quite noisy, it is not a place to have a conversation
Service was excellent. Noise level of restaurant was way too high (we had to yell to hear each other). Food was good but unremarkable. Trendy scene.
Amazing and very accommodating to food allergy!!
Time is a special occasion
Great friendly staff. Very accommodating. Food great.
Great experience overall. Spicy pineapple margarita was great, food was fantastic, and the service was very friendly and prompt.
Exceptional service and very informative staff. The carnitas were scrumptious.
Always a wonderful time at Empellon. Love the ambience, the food and the people. First class.
Not only was the food and the margaritas incredible, but the service was amazing too. My water glass slipped out of my hand and shattered all over the table and they had it cleaned up immediately and also made sure I wasn't hurt in any way. Will definitely be back!!
Awful dining experience. Food was terrible and where our table was was freezing with cold air conditioning blowing at us despite complaining twice it was not switched off. The music is so loud, you have to shout at each other to be heard.
Delicious food, exquisite dishes, superb staff. I would highly recommend
Tacos are good, guac is excellent, side vegetable dishes (beets and broccoli) are bland and overpriced. The broccoli are actually just stems, which is deeply confusing and unsatisfying. It would be like giving someone just the stems of roses instead of the actual flowers: not exactly a panty dropper.
The food was mediocre and overpriced. The staff was very nice, but I would not revisit. It’s also quite loud in there.
Sumptuous feast! The selection was wonderful and the mood was just right. Try the drunken beans and the ceviches.
Food was lackluster and dry tasting. Felt very rushed
amazing experience, cant wait to go back!
Best Mexican food we have had in some time...service was off the charts...
The managers and servers have been very accomodating even when more people come over to joint our already large group. The food is super fresh and good.
The food is very good and it is a nice place, though noisy. The host at reception was unfriendly, bordering on rude. Wait staff were friendly.
Super friendly service staff, delicious food that came out fast, chic but casual ambiance. I'll definitely be back and I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a great dining experience in NYC.
Delicious drinks - good food, limited menu
As for downtown Mexican - much more comfortable to sit in than many others with better service and drinks and not crazy prices - the most disappointing part of the dinner were the chips and salsa!
3 of our party of 6 were stuck in traffic and arrived 15 minutes late for our reservation. When the host seated us, he told us (and not in a nice way) that we would have to order quickly. I have worked in restaurants for many years and this set the mood for dinner and totally turned me off. Our server was lovely and food was good, but not good enough to have me recommend this place after our host's greeting.
Food was great, service was iffy, it was packed and there were only two waitresses
Meh. Not worth the money. Dos Toros’ tacos are as good.
Great little spot making modern versions of authentic Mexican flavors. Margaritas are the best I’ve had in New York so far (I’m a Texas native, so I have plenty of margarita experience. Ha). Service could not have been better. It’s small and gets packed quickly, so always make a reservation though.
