What Insiders Are Saying
As we’re all well aware, Mexican food in Manhattan generally blows. Empellon hasn’t come to save the day, but it isn’t adding to the problem either. While nothing blew us away, the food was solid with the good outweighing the bad.
Loved the aptmosphere but the food didn’t have any taste. We tried the fish tacos and the sea bass tacos. Both were bland. The guacamole however was amazing. The place was cute but we won’t be back.
Good food though tacos were quite expensive for what they were.
Once again we had a fabulous time! Food was delicious, service was excellent, margaritas were tasty and the chocolate dessert was scrumptious!
The food was bad. I was actually sick for four hours after dinner with a terrible stomachache.
The food is inspirational; service impeccable.
Never disappoints. Was trend setter and while others are now doing similar things, still happy to return here for tasty, consistent food and pretty darn good drinks, too
Empellon's flavors and executions held up six years after my first visit! The restaurant was super accommodating, making a prime-time brunch reservation for our party of 12 plus two babies in high chairs. We all enjoyed margaritas (made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, hallelujah), guacamole with a flight of 7 salsas, and various tacos. My husband and I housed 3 duck tacos (great hoisin flavor, and the tortillas were somewhat reminiscent of the pancakes you get with Peking duck) and two brussels sprout tacos. Delivery time for our entrees was a bit slow, but I attribute this to them timing the firing of 12 peoples' entrees. We had a great time!
Our table was ready on time. The service, food and cocktails were excellent. Jennifer, our server was on top of everything and a great personality. I highly recommend this spot. Love it.
Really fantastic cocktails. Food was delicious. Highly recommend!
We had a reservation on PRIDE Day and were amazed that we could get through the crowds, our reservation was on time, and the service was prompt even though I am sure the staff had a very busy day. The tacos are small and varied and suggest sharing to taste as many as possible. Great margaritas, and fun ice cream desserts.
I've been going to Empellon since it opened, a fantastic place with the best tacos ever. The margaritas are amazing. Don't miss out in visiting Empellon Taqueria
We showed up at 10:30 - after last call - but they were kind enough to seat and serve us anyway. Food and cocktails ++. We'll definitely be back.
The food was really tasty and good, however overpriced when compared to other similar restaurants.
We found the service great, very efficient and pleasant. We had a nice time!
our server was exceptional.....thanks...the food was so tasty and the margaritas were so great...we had several different kinds...
duck tacos ftw. Great meal and they didn't rush us out which is rare.
GO HERE!! A friend and I came here for the 3 for $30 Sunday pre-fixe. Our server, Michal, was so nice, helpful, and cheerful. The food came out promptly. The cashew dip in the first course was so good I asked for more. The portions were pretty good- we were getting close to full after the 2nd course. We both had the English peas with ramps for the vegetables course- it was a unique and delicious dish. We then had the queso fundido with shishito peppers. I had the sea bass tacos and my friend had the skirt steak tacos. Everything was excellent. We were stuffed and happy at the end of our meal! Would definitely go back.
Love it! Classic margarita, guacamole and steak tacos are everything
Disappointing second visit. Over priced bland food after we had a great meal three years ago. All food dumped on table at once in an effort to rush us through- resulting in cold food and no care or attention. There are far better modern Mexican restaurants. We will not return or re commend to others.
Delicious food and fantastically helpful, informative, fun and relatable server. Loved everything about this place except for the completely unaccommodating hostess.
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. We loved the small tacos, the ability to mix and match and choose different tacos, and the great prices. It has been about 4 years since we had been there, and we were really disappointed.
First, the menu is very different, and we were not pleased when we saw the new menu. It’s fancier, more expensive, and they don’t have nearly the fun variety they used to have. You can no longer order 2 different kinds of tacos; you must order 2-3 of the same. Also, there are fewer options for tacos. The starters and vegetable options were really limited as well. They no longer have the delicious street corn on the cob, but instead more gourmet options.
Now, the food was delicious. There’s no question about that. Had we never been there before, we would have been happy with the food. But we preferred the restaurant’s original menu.
But the service was inexcusably terrible. For our party of 4, they brought 3 of us our drinks in a timely fashion, but it took 25 minutes to get the margarita for the fourth member of our party, when we all ordered at the same time. As for our food, it took an hour for us to get our food. ONE HOUR. And the restaurant was not full. 50 minutes after ordering, I asked the manager to check our food (because our server could not be found). 8 minutes later, our server said that the kitchen was making our food. 58 minutes after ordering. They had forgotten our order, and our server would not have noticed had I not asked. The manager apologized and covered our drinks for us, but the whole experience was poor. I could look beyond the poor service and try it again if they still had their old menu, but with the latest menu, we will not return
Empellon is my go to pre-jazz club restaurant. The sea bass tacos and quail egg sopes were excellent, as is just about everything else on the menu. Admittedly, the corn in the "corn ice cream" was a bit difficult to discern.
Delicious, inventive cuisine. Many of the items can be made vegan. Five delicious salsas and the English Peas with garlic ramps and mint have a yummy Greek like garlic sauce that you cannot stop eating!
Nice taco’s with Pastrami, duck, sprouts and other creative combo’s
Food was delicious however our experience was ruined by the way we were treated at the end of our meal: we reserved for 4 people at 9:30pm on a Sunday night, restaurant was quiet and they rushed our service, even started emptying out neighbouring tables and chairs from the restaurant while we were eating, brought us the bill without us asking and without proposing dessert/coffee while our empty main course plates were still on the table... final straw was when they turned up the dimmed lights while we weren’t even done drinking our bottle of wine... reserved at 9:30pm and we were long gone before 11pm with all these “messages” from the staff... too bad because food was actually good
Hits the spot with great margaritas, guacamole, tacos and tasty desserts !
We went late, 10 pm, so it was quiet, and the service great. Loved the food and wines by the glass more than satisfactory
Everyone at the restaurant, from Carlos the host to the servers, were wonderfully welcoming, friendly and professional. I love the inventive Mexican food at this terrific restaurant. Always a pleasure and treat to eat there!
Loud, bad service, don’t even know who our server was, had to ask bidder for refill and check
We went there for their Cinco de Mayo pre-fix menu. Most times the guac and chips are disappointing, but not here, it was delicious. Everyone loved their meals (I had the fish tacos), and the margaritas were just right! It was loud and hectic, as is expected for Cinco de Mayo, but the staff was super friendly. We had Omar as a server and he was excellent.
Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait 1 hour until we were able to get seated which was a bit frustrating. However, it was a delicious meal and the service was great... worth the wait!
Brunch prix fixe. Food was good but drinks were dissapointing!
Great food and margaritas. The brussel sprouts taco was particularly good.
This is my 4th or 5th time and each time I leave utterly satisfied. The food is delicious, very flavorful, fun, and well presented. I can be with my husband, colleagues and even a client, everyone loves it. The cocktails are very well crafted, creative and delicious as well. Shishito peppers, guacamole and the 7 dips are a great way to start the meal with a Mescal margarita for instance. The tacos are all good, my favorite being the tempura fish, the crispy duck and the lamb. I favor another cocktail over desserts, but there are options for the sweet tooth. The room is lively, the service fast and perfect.
Such a fun and delicious dinner. We had a 7 pm reservation but somehow thought it was 8 pm, so arrived an hour late. And the host was incredibly gracious on a busy Saturday night and found a table for us anyway. And that gesture set the tone for the rest of the night. We were well cared for and had a fantastic meal (still thinking about the duck/hot honey tacos).
Amazing! Great food and attendance!
The service and drinks were excellent, however the food was oddly bland and somewhat lacking. My brisket taco was dry as a bone.
Exceptional meal and drinks. A repeat!!
Great food, good service and an incredibly noisy environment. Best for a group, especially if they care about good food.
Restaurant is excellent. The health inspector just happened to pop in that night which caused a slight delay in service, but the waitress kept us updated and offered us the first round of the drinks on the house. The chips are excellent and so are the tacos!
Great tacos and guacamole. Good service. Ask to sit in the back, the front is too noisy.
