Empellón Taqueria is local, Mexican inspired restaurant and bar from Chef Alex Stupak, located in the heart of the West Village.

Our menu focusses on tacos, ceviche, queso fundidos and seasonal vegetable dishes.

We use fresh masa to make our corn tortillas daily, (they’re gluten free).

Our drink menu focuses on margaritas and cocktails crafted from artisanal Mexican spirits. Beer and wine is also available, with happy hour specials served at our Sunday – Friday, including late night.

We serve dinner 7 nights a week, brunch on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon, and offer a Sunday evening prix fixe. Takeout and delivery are also available via Seamless, GrubHub or Caviar.

I had made reservations for my visiting friend’s birthday a week in advance. I confirmed when I got a confirmation text. We showed up on time and host said it would be a few minutes for our table. 25 minutes later he tried to seat us at the communal high top table. I told him I reserved a table and it was a birthday. He, Aaron, was unapologetic explaining some bigger parties had come in so we would need to be seated at communal table. I was surprised how bossy and unapologetic he was about the situation. He said we could be put on the walk in wait list if we wanted a table! He was extremely rude. We left mad without eating so he cancelled my reservation so I couldn’t leave a review. We went back the next afternoon because I do love the food and I’ve enjoyed this neighborhood restaurant for years. Again, the hostess was not welcoming but the waitress and waitress staff were wonderful as were the food and cocktails. Not a place with a warm welcoming hospitality/host staff.

Spouse and I had a fun and delicious dinner here, we enjoyed the queso fundido with shishito peppers and mezcal margaritas. The lobster tacos were our clear favorite over the duck tacos. But the revelation of the night was the Kishu mandarins dessert, the ice bar that breaks open and spills out tequila toffee was a delight!

Only one high chair for the whole restaurant, slow service, much narrower menu than it used to. Got an expired beer that took forever. Felt like it expired on the way. To top things off we forgot our baby’s water bottle and they were nice to call back and tell us, only to find out that five days later they ‘had cleared the lost and found’ and thrown it away. Thanks and goodbye empellón

If you are looking for a place to have a conversation and/or a nice relaxing dinner, this is not the place to go. It was so loud in there that my sister (who I dined with) and I had to yell in order to hear each other. The restaurant had a lot of empty tables as it was early in the evening but they put us all in the front of the restaurant I guess they think that if the restaurant looks packed it will attract people to come in. They should consider the comfort of their existing customers and not cram a bunch of people in one small area I am NOT going to this location again. Their other locations are better

We enjoyed a group meal here sharing the delicious food and enjoying the margaritas and beer selection on offer. Service was very good - we were seated in our preferred area, the waitress spoke through the menu clearly and provided her recommendations too (the brussel sprout taco was different and tasty!) and we were looked after well. The atmosphere was busy, with the tall and lower tables providing a bustling feeling in the room. It was expensive for tacos and margaritas - but they were very good!

Wow! We were very impressed by Empellón Taqueria. Very warm welcome, pretty ambiance, attentive staff and best of all delicious food and beverages. We shared the guacamole and queso fundito with shishito peppers to start. Served with crisp chips and warm corn tortillas both were delicious. Then we shared the carnitas and fish tacos. Carnitas were nicely caramelized and the fish tacos were crispy and flavorful. Their sauces were also delicious. You get several different types with the carnitas along with a platter of thinly sliced onions and cilantro. We didn’t try desserts but I’d imagine they would have been fantastic. Also the neighborhood where the restaurant is located is a great place to wander around and take in some classic nyc moments. Highly recommend!

Called ahead to ask if a picky eater could be accommodated by making a cheese quesadilla or chesse tacos. Was assured this was possible. When sitting down for dinner, was told it was not possible. Ordered the Sweet potato flautas and asked for no onions due to an allergy, they said that was no problem. Took the first bite and they were filled with onions. Waitress then said she forgot they were filled with onions and was impossible to make it without onions because everything is pre made, ew. Also, the margaritas were very underwhelming for the price.

I used to love Empellon Taqueria's food, but I hadn't been in a couple of years and it has really gone down hill. The service and wine were both very good, but the food was bland and poorly balanced. A small bowl of guacamole was $17 and consisted of mashed avocado with insufficient acid and salt liberally sprinkled with chopped raw jalapeno peppers that were not properly integrated into the dish. The beet tartare dish was overwhelmed by large chunks of undercooked potato. The Lamb Barbocoa and Brussels Sprouts tacos were tasty, but needed salt (and it took me 15 minutes to get salt). The chicken taco with black kale was really awful; the chicken was mushy and tasteless, and the kale was overcooked and tasteless. I won't be going back.

These are fantastic tacos. We were aiming at happy hour when the tacos are about $5 each instead of $16 or so for two. We didn't realize we would be sitting at high top, long higher table down the center, in order to have the happy hour tacos. But they were all very good. We all loved the skirt steak, the fish tempura was good, although there is a lot of the fried part, my husband liked the duck. My husband had been there before, loved the tacos and wanted to go back with our kids.

One of the waiters is always trying to push food down your throat and it’s very annoying. It’s my 4th time there and he is always the same.... if I want to eat more I will ask for mote. He is blonde.

Food came out cold - every taco filling was cold. No one came by immediately after the food was dropped to ask how the food was, so we ate it anyway. Tasted OK, but I imagine it would have been better hot.
