Was seated right away, the overall decor and ambiance was very tasteful, but the food was slightly lacking in the comparison to flavor and price point. Started with Spicy Cucumber Margaritas and the Guacamole which was excellent, the spiciness the of both the guac and margarita were on point, the number of different salsas and hot sauces offered was unique with its presentation as well (that was the only satisfying dish, unfortunately). Followed the starter with Fish Tempura Tacos, Pastrami Tacos and Sticky Rice Tamal with Red Chile Duck. The tempura taco was ok the light batter and the fish being cooked correctly was right, it just lacked in any flavor. The pastrami taco was pedestrian it was a pastrami sandwich transposed to a corn tortilla, and the sticky rice was impressive with the presentation, the duck was cooked incredibly, but it also fell short on any real flavor in the fact that it was bland. In parallel to Casa Enrique, the food needs to take some steps in improving its overall flavor profile. Loved the drinks and the atmosphere but wouldn’t come back for dinner, would go back for drinks and guac.
We were seated next to the open kitchen. The yelling was so loud as to be distracting and jarring. The woman at our table kept yanking her head around as if she was about to encounter a violent act. The service was abysmal. One gentleman at the table had to ask three times for an ice tea. Another had to ask for a knife for the second course twice.
Lunch special was surprisingly good. Wines b6 the glass were well picked and priced. Service was quick and efficient.
Major problem in seating. I arrived 20 minutes early even though tables were available hostess refused to seat claiming they have to space out .
Waited 20 minutes for my lunch partner to arrive to be seated while at least 14 seats on main floor was available to the whole time.
Stupid to say the least u don’t want ur customers to start with bad taste in their mouth .
Excellent meal with an elegant and interesting Mexican-influenced cuisine. Great to share plates. Many interesting choices. There was a lunch menu which is a great option. Need to go back.
The meal we had at Empellon was the best meal we had in NYC. The Octopus
with Celery and Salsa Verde was outstanding and the Sea Bream
with Chilaquiles Verdes was one of the best dishes I have EVER had. Amazing!
Empellon has a unique menu and a comfortable atmosphere. The sticky rice with duck was assembled at the table - unwrapped and sauced. A reduction that was very flavorful but regretfully too salty for my tastes. The selection of tacos is far from typical so be ready for a creative dining experience. Our choices were fish tempura and octopus. The tempura packs a big fried crunch and the octopus a delicious messy sauce (finger licking good).
The staff was very congenial and professional.
Delicious cocktails, great ambience and inventive smartly crafted menu.
Wonderful creative Mexican cuisine. Almost every dish was outstanding--especially octopus tacos &sea bream. The restaurant did a great job helping to orchestrate a surprise birthday party. Very sleek and eye-catching decor. Food didn't appear that pricey but the drinks certainly were, so the tab adds up fast even for not-heavy drinkers. Also, you will want to order lots of small plates.
Exceptional meal with attentive service.
I went to dinner with a friend. We ordered a couple of margaritas to start - classic and saffron. Both were too tart for our liking. With regards to our meal, we started with the guacamole and seven salsas. The guacamole was just okay, but some of the seven salsas were excellent, especially the mildest and hottest ones. We had tacos for our main meal - falafel and pastrami. Both were good. As was the Brussels sprouts side dish. Overall food was good, but not great. The place was very loud - it was tough to hear the person sitting across from me. I would go again, if it was convenient - but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there.
Excellent. I will definitely return to this please.
Lovely salsas and guacamole. Would not order crab uni nachos again but the smoked cod was sublime and the avocado dessert! Wish I’d tried all the desserts and likely will return for that express purpose. This is what chef did so phenomenally well at WD50 and his return to form definitely reason to celebrate.
Overall a B - The food was good but was a bit disappointed by a main course of corn- and basically more corn. There was some other things in there, but not the best. 3 of us did the pre-Fixe which only includes 2 mains.
Most disappointing was the attitude of the waiters- get over yourselves, people! We are here to enjoy a good meal and pleasant convo- snootiness doesn't become you.
On the plus side was the short rib and rioja wine.
Simply put this place is pretentious, which would make you think the service was great, but alas the answer is sadly no. The server gives you menus, not the host, so if your server doesn't realize your table is sat, like ours, you're sitting there, menu-less and a little cranky that you're hungry and can't even start to plan your meal. When you actually read the menu, which I didn't before hand, I was disappointed by the selection, it's trying way to hard. Portions are small and it's mostly tapas style so be ready to order quite a few items. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I've had similar for much better elsewhere. Basically this place is no bang for your buck unless you're looking to feel important, and be met with snooty service. At the very least you'll have a good cocktail in your hand.
Waited 30 minutes for the food...
My second time to Empellon Midtown, my family usually goes to the one in the village. The food is as amazing as the one in the village. More entrée style at midtown. My 13 year old son LOVED it. Said was the best skirt steak he's ever had and he's a huge foodie. We've been to most of the steakhouses in NYC.
Empellon has been on my Manhattan list for a year now, and I'm so glad I was able to invite a few partners to try it out with me. We tried their array of salsas, all incredible, their tacos, and ordered the dessert avocado as our finale. We were so impressed with everything, and completely surprised that we were most impressed by the dessert avocado. I know it sounds weird, but just order it. It's the best dessert I've personally ever had.
All in all a fun experience - thought the service was while very friendly/ genuine was a tad on the slow side. Id go back. Loud and energetic - glad we were seated upstairs - loved the food octopus tacos were great. Loved the menu of salsas - creative and very good for all palates.
A truly unique Mexican experience. Food is at a whole different level from your typical taco experience. Don't miss the fish tacos, short ribs and the avocado dessert. We shared an appetizer, taco, main course and dessert and it was plenty for two of us. We will be back!
Very good food, high end Southwestern
High quality, a lot of energy. Warm friendly wait staff
A lot of fun sharing dishes
It was nice, cocktails were very good as were the guac and array of salsas. The entree menu is made more for sharing with larger single dish entrees too big for two if you want to eat more than one thing. Tacos and sides are nice. Nice addition to the area.
Excellent service in a nice setting. Doesn’t feel crowded. The guacamole with seven salsas kept the three of us entertained while entrees were being prepared. Food was cooked perfectly and well-seasoned.
Food is original and interesting. Great effort on service but timing was off. Nice team.
Excellent food including dishes uncommon for Mexican restaurants. Excellent margaritas. Knowledgeable wait staff are 100% on their game without being distracting.
We had a perfect evening. Came here for my mom’s birthday. Staff is professional and friendly. Cocktails were on point. The guac and 7 salsas were heavenly. Tacos were full of flavor. Skirt steak and sea bream dishes were amazing. And to top it off, our waiter was the best waiter ever. He brought out a surprise dessert for my mom, and was so attentive to every detail throughout the meal.
Dessert was wonderful, as always. Savory food was very good. Cocktail were decidedly hit or miss. In aggregate, it was great. I will definitely return.
Great & imaginative food in beautiful setting. We had a great meal- good for sharing.
I was truly disappointed with this place. I waited 10 mins at the table before I was asked what I would like to drink. The crab nachos were lacking flavor and was room temperature. The fish taco was almost a saving grace as the fish itself was perfectly fried and had good flavor. However it was drowned out by the soggy tortilla which was dripping as we tried to pick it off the plate. Our main dish was the short ribs. At $42 it was the highlight disappointment! The short ribs was served room temperature. No hint of warmth. With all the flavors that came with it, it was difficult to appreciate as the condiments were also slapped on the ribs as though the kitchen was super busy and forgot that part of the meal was presentation.(the part of making sure that food is served at the right temperature was also missed) . Our birthday meal was expensive and at best, poor quality. Nothing really worked. I was truly upset with the lack of effort given as I am sure with having a little pride in with what comes out of your kitchen, would have at least been mediocre. I am truly disappointed. I don't understand the James Beard nomination.
Fantastic food, attention, and service from a very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and attentive waiter. Absolutely made my daughter’s birthday so special and memorable! Thank you. We will be back.
Trip to NY. Best place we have ever eaten ate. Amazing food, service, atmosphere. The best.
Fantastic meal. Save room for dessert.
Not worth the price. Still a decent place to eat but the concept is failed to deliver through both presentation and food taste.
Too loud and too much attitude. The location in the village is superior.
Freshest effort in mexican food in years.
The marriage: DNA Of Mexican food blended with the percision of japanese chefs, presented by French chefs, flavors inspired by Eric Ripert.
Go pork, belly, chop, great selection of Mezcals
The place is beautiful, the cocktails are great, but the food is so so. The tamale is plain gross.
The hostesses were rude and slow.
Menu doesn’t appropriately identify the food or ingredients.
Nice space, good service, great food...not cheap, but in line for New York. Great food: a sophisticated take on healthy, very tasty, Mexican inspired fare. Desserts are outstanding....try anything with their specially produced chocolate. The avacado/guacamole nachos come with six spreads....like getting six different, great items in one order. The crab nachos were a bit pricey...especially for the frugal amount of crab sprinkled on top....but the dish was still very good. If they have the corn main course, do not hesitate....excellent.
Disappointing. The food was bland and pricey.
The service was attentive.
I’m not even a vegetarian but that cabbage appetizer was off the charts great
