A member of our party had a dairy allergy. The restaurant was wonderful and so helpful
The cucumber margarita was refreshing and a nice twist on an old standard. Guacamole with several sauces was outstanding, as were the short ribs! Tequila ice cream in meringue log is not to be missed. Decor and service excellent too. Will return when in town again.
Great food, drink, and service!
Love the chips and salsas, the fish tacos, well, pretty much everything!
The starters and desserts are really good!
Excellent, elevated Mexican cuisine, in a stylish room, with "on point" service.
Nothing to be repeated! Food regular and very pricy.
I took my husband here for his Father’s Day dinner and he loved it! We both loved it! The fish tacos and guacamole with seven salsas is a must have. Great over all experience!
After a wonderful broadway show, this was the perfect ending. Steve and Jay from Philadelphia.
Our reservation was on a Saturday night and the restaurant could not sit our large party together, even though the restaurant was not full at all. There was not much ambiance and no bar scene. The drinks and food were mediocre; the guacamole is the only thing I would recommend. The interpretation of gnocchi was not good nor was the tamale. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Excellent food with excellent. service.
Loved everything except noise level could not hear each other talk at table
Thank you Team! Really incredible experience.
Had a great dinner at Empellon. We had a really nice table upstairs which was pretty quiet so it was easy to have a conversation.
Service: The service was great - the staff was very friendly and attentive and offered up great food suggestions. I had questions on how a few of the food items were prepared and our server was very knowledgeable.
Food: I would definitely recommend the guacamole/salsa appetizer - perfect to share and start the meal. The bacon taco and cabbage salad were also great. Definitely save room for dessert - they are all so creative and unique (and gorgeous to look at!). We had the ice cream taco and 'avocado' and were very happy with both!
Loved everything we ate!
The food was AWFUL. We ordered a duck tamale that tasted like Purina dog chow. Asparagus salad was ok but not much asparagus and no flavor. Short rib taco was covered in what tasted like jarred BBQ sauce. Will not be returning.
Food was pretty good. Enjoyed the lettuce leaves, tamal with duck a bit boring, octopus taco had terrific tortillas. Best dish was pork belly with more of the tortillas. But oh the noise! Even in a slightly out of the way corner it was impossible to have a conversation.
Dreadful food with every dish over doctored, over priced and underwhelming in being
tiny portions. Not on Madison Avenue at all-big fraud just to gain style from that
street-walked by three times before we found the place with its dull frontage on a
side street. Cocktails well overpriced-not much choice in selections. Waitress
suggested we order from here and there on the menu-there were 4 of us. If we had
taken her advice, I would have faced a $400-500 bill for fussy looking rip offs. This
place does not deserve a second look much less taste experience.
Food was delicious, space was not crowded, server was amicable.
Food significantly decreased in quality since last year
Food was delicious and very creative! Especially the desserts. A wonderful find!
Lovely staff and great food
A great location, something completely different - can’t recommend it enough!
The food and especially the avocado dessert were amazing! The service was professiinal and attentive without being overbearing. We loved it!!!
Empellon offers a creative take on Mexican fine dining in a stylish, modern setting. The menu is varied, with a strong seafood component, and the dishes are beautifully presented. The shareable menu selections make this a great destination for groups. We chose our dishes based on recommendations from a former employee we know — he suggested the cabbage salad (delicious), pastrami tacos (a little on the fatty side, but very tasty), fish tacos, uni nachos, and sea bream. We also had the skirt steak, which was tender and flavorful. Save room for the unique desserts — we had the avocado parfait, which provides an interesting and refreshing flavor combination unlike any we'd ever experienced before.
Great experience. Quality ingredients, really interesting not overwhelming and well paced. Recommendations were on point in terms of combinations. Genc was an awesome waiter.
..upon our arrival we were greeted by the hostess, who immediately escorted us to our table..Our server “ Anna L” was amazing..engaging, made great recommendations..everything flowed like a well oiled machine..We had several small dishes.. we wanted to try several items on the menu instead of ordering a singular item..we had the cabbage salad( not your typical!),white asparagus salad, sea bream( omg!).. but I must say the
Cremè de la cremè was the dessert.. The “ Avocado” was our fav! Can’t wait to go back
Every bite was sensational. We loved the sticky rice tamal, the salmon and gooseberries, all the tacos. The tres leches was shockingly complex and satisfying and the ice cream sandwich was divine.
Food was good however my business guest ordered an item that apparently had a 5 ounce minimum (marked on the menu) which he did not realize. Long story short we did not get 5 ounces but I was charged an $88 minimum fee. They should have either pointed out the minimum fee (then I would have taken the same dish) or served us the 5 ounces. As I had a guest I did not raise a fuss but am unlikely to ever go back.
Service was great! After reading the New York Times reviews, I planned to stay away from the tacos. I'm so glad that I decided to try the thick cut bacon tacos, they were a highlight of the meal! Skirt steak was also great. The corn ice cream tacos were amazing too!
I did not like this restaurant. Unfortunately my husband and I went on a recommendation and did not check the menu before making a reservation. They are listed as Mexican food, but I would say it is really more fusion. I am just not sure which cultures they were trying to fuse??Once we arrived they seated us immediately which was great, but as soon as they realized we were not ordering any of their specialty overpriced drinks drinks they seemed to be in a hurry to get us out.
We ordered the guacamole with 7 salsas as an appetizer. For $21 we were expecting something amazing and what we got was just average. The guac came out very quickly so it was obviously not freshly made and had too much cilantro in it. And the salsas were more weird than tasty. I think they have exotic confused with flavorful. it was like they were trying too hard to be fancy and they missed the mark. The bus boys took our forks and started prepping for the next course while we were still using them for the appetizer.
Main meal was a shared dish, Short Rib Confit with Picadillo Garnish, which while the meat was cooked very nicely the sauce had way too many sweet notes. We paired that with the Chile Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Seasoned Sesame Seeds , which were spicy, but also had a sweet thing going on that didn't pair well with the chile or the sesame seeds.
The staff made sure you had service, but they were hovering over the table most of the time. It was actually too attentive, they would fill my water glass after almost every sip! We chose not to have dessert, based on the rest of the meal. Some foodies might appreciate this place, but I was not a fan.
Food was great (Crab nachos, Octopus tacos, Crispy pork belly with chitchatting, Chocolate mousse). Service on point. Nice two level space. Price what you’d expect for the location. We’ll be back. Expanded our flavor horizons.
This is perhaps the finest haute cuisine Mexican restaurant in the Tri-State area. The fish tacos were as light and delicate as could be. The seven salsa guacamole was gimmicky, but the tastes were varied and interesting and the tortilla chips were perfect. The sticky rice with duck confit was just okay and there are probably better tasting items on the menu. The short-ribs with mole sauce, almonds, olives and grapes were enormous and outstanding. It definitely should be shared. Drinks are pricey, but I guess that is midtown pricing. The Mexican chocolate ice cream sandwich was good. Empellon is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in NYC.
Took my wife on a date.
Crab nachos were good..nothing special. Must haves are the Octopus tacos and the Tequila ice cream.
The Southwestern dishes can be imaginative and interesting. But the noise is so ear-splitting that easy conversation is impossible. Am in no hurry to return.
Upscale but not pretentious place. Cool design and balcony seating. Noise was low with good acoustics so one could have a conversation. Food was delicious. Crab nachos were great. Very subtle flavors. The fish tacos were outstanding, perfectly balanced with the lime, not overpowered. The octopus taco was not so good, overdone and the flavors were not great. But otherwise is was really superb and would recommend.
Amazing experience! The desserts were definitely the star!
Love the food so different and delicious!
The chilled lobster was wonderful...very firm and sweet. My daughter had the duck sticky rice and that was delicious.
Only negative was the gnocchi with truffles. The gnocchi was absolute mush and not worth eating. We shared the truffles and morels and left the gnocchi.
