Excellent food and service.
With dishes like a delicious fish tempura taco, Empellon Midtown - like Alex Stupak's other two Empellon restaurants in NYC - offers a nouveau take on traditional Mexican cuisine. If you like Mexican, you must give it a try.
An interesting menu and worthwhile for a special occasion. Some of the staff very nice but our main waiter was very surely. Very expensive so beware.
I've dined here few times and it never disappoints.
We returned to Empellón for the second time after going during Restaurant Week in July and loved this visit just as much, if not more! Every dish was outstanding! You can taste the love and care put into every detail of every meal. Our server Ozzy was also top notched and provided an excellent dining experience, along with the entire wait staff. Thank you for another amazing meal! We will definitely be back! Full details on our Instagram: @excessiveeaters
Bustling atmosphere, trendy, great flavors, the local Brooklyn beer was excellent (aromatic fresh and flavorful) and great sculptures. Would definitely reccommend and go back.
As always the food was amazing, and José was fabulous. See you soon Empellon!
DO NOT SKIP DESSERT. It is well worth saving room for. We loved sharing several tacos and guacamole and the selection of seven salsas. All delicious. But the real star was the avocado dessert. Don’t let the bland description dissuade you. We also enjoyed the corn ice cream taco and the pineapple and ice cream.
Food and service were great,
The smoked black cod appetizer is outstanding. The noise level was a bit too loud for us.
Who would think Mexi-party food could be elevated to such heights?
Everything coming out if the kitchen sizzled and sang.
service was friendly and attentive, food delicious
Delicious food and great service as always!
Service is polite and efficient without being intrusive. The food was at times pedestrian and over salted and other times inedible. On order: crab nachos, brussels, tartare quest, and short rib. Nachos were too lightly dressed with crab to command the $30 price tag and the corn chips themselves were cold. Sprouts were fine, but the balsamic soy (?) glaze was a bit heavy on some of the dish. Queso in theory sounded amazing but was nearly inedible. The crackling topper overwhelmed the dish and the cheese lacked any flavor. The cheese was also congealing by the time it made it to our table so fundido it was not. Short rib presentation was messy and the actual dish was drowning in salt. We’ve gone to Empellon before and loved it. Maybe we ordered the wrong items of arrived to close to closing but things were just off. At ~$35-45 an entree and ~$18 a drink this place can’t afford to be off though.
We had a great time at Empellon. There was a lot of energy and we loved the gaucamole with 7 sauces! The staff was very accommodating and the menu interesting. My husband had pastrami tacos and I had octopus tacos. Both were tasty and unusual. The desserts were a pleasant delicious surprise - something you might not expect from a Mexican restaurant.
Lunch course is good. Decent food, service and ambiance. Quite expensive tacos though
Very Disappointing after excellent meals at the former Empellon location in the East Village and at Empellon Taqueria on West 4th Street. A stunningly beautiful restaurant with well-spaced tables. Excited by the intriguing and different menu but the chefs in the gorgeous open kitchen failed to meet expectations. The guacamole was excellent but I could have done without the gimmicky presentation of 6 accompanying sauces. Tried them all but preferred the guacamole alone. Duck tamale was excessively salty (and I like salty food). Took one bite & pushed it away. Hash brown taco sounded so interesting, but the chunk of hash browns presented on top of the tortilla was dried out, luke warm and not crispy. The sauces on the taco did not seem to go well with the hash browns. Dessert of 8 small bites of different fruits including some excellent creative preparations. Highly recommend that dessert.
Great food—definitely try the guacamole and salsa ‘for the table.’ It was pretty quiet when we arrived, which pulled from the ambiance, but overall very good.
Always consistently good and memorable experience. Thank you Ivan!!
Great spot close to the theater district. Fabulously helpful staff.
Great service, and authentic and tasty food while being innovative.
This is a "trendyish" over priced, loud restaurant with stingy portions.
Phenomenal as usual. Do yourself a favor and GO! The food is amazing and each bite full of rich and fresh flavors.
Great food and drink and wonderful service! We loved everything we ate, and our server was incredibly helpful in guiding us toward some house specialties and options for what would be good to share. She also let us know what was the right amount of food - and she was spot-on. The margaritas were amazing - particularly the apricot and the saffron - and the guacamole with seven sauces was spectacular. We loved the pastrami tacos and the sea bream. And then we were set to ask for the check and leave, when our server suggested the avocado dessert. She said we had to and she was right. It was amazing!
We had a wonderful dinner. Thanks!
Amazing food. Not cheap but worth the price. Service is good and place is not overrun so overall a really good option.
Lovely restaurant. The food was delicious, with creative combinations of flavors and options from mild to spicy. The servers found the perfect balance of casual and professional, with deep knowledge of the offerings, including ingredients and preparation. Not once did they interrupt our conversation, yet they were always there when we needed them. We were traveling in NYC and meeting old friends. I will definitely try to come back!
Very very good crab nacho and duck tamal. Service on the spot. Adriano my server is the best.
Really delicious creative food. Too bad they took the Lobster appetizer off the menu. There are still a lot of great choices.
Friendly and accomodating staff.
Knowledgeable sommelier... had 2015 Mexican wine which i would have never ordered unless i trusted the sommelier ; it was exactly as described and enjoyed it very much.
Excellent quality, ambiance is very nice, service is excellent, various options for cuisine, innovative cocktails.
It’s too expensive for what they are really offering
only the guacamole and the crab nachos were good, the rest was below average
A top quality experience, as always. Hostess at door helped us get seated quickly even though we arrived more than 30 minutes early. Our server was well dressed, courteous and knowledgeable about the dishes. But, ultimately, one goes to eat, no? The food was superb: seafood nachos (with sea urchin!), king salmon, pastrami tacos (to die for!!!), fish tempura tacos (light & great lime salsa), squash blossom capellini (seasonal), and the AMAZING (as always) “avocado”, and corn ice cream taco, for dessert. Drinks are a well curated selection of tequilas and mezcals, although beer and wine are certainly available and good value. Try the mezcal margarita.
Definitely a gathering spot for the after work Millennial crowd, who filled the restaurant and bar area when we entered for our 7 pm reservation. Very loud and had to speak in raised voice. Thankfully we were seated upstairs, where the noise level was manageable. Receptionist and wait staff were all very friendly, respectful and knowledgeable about the menu, even going into more detail to answer our questions about ingredients, etc. Service was easy and not rushed. The guacamole with the seven sauces was outstanding, as were the tacos (pastrami with mustard seed salsa, and the fish tempura). Only comment is that the tacos came out too soon because we wanted more time to enjoy our appetizer, and our drinks arrived after our appetizer and entres were served. All in all, a pleasant, lively evening, with delicious food.
Expectations were high. Food was underwhelming. Salt used to compensate for a lack of flavor. It wasn’t awful, but it didn’t live up to the hype or the cost. A very creative menu with unusual options. It’s worth a night out if you’re curious about the pastrami tacos, but the tortillas are not of particular quality.
Service was rushed and we were seated in a remote upstairs section away from the lively Friday night crowd ...it seems like we were profiled and didn’t make the cut for the pretty people section. Not a great experience, but have loved other empellón locations in years past.
Very different for a Mexican restaurant.
Great choices on the menu.
Knowledgeable wait staff.
Will definitely go back for the guacamole dish.
Incredible. Best pork ever
This was our third visit to Empellon and won't be our last. The bar scene downstairs makes it rather noisy for our taste but the food is superb and the service is attentive while not intrusive. I shared the "pork chop" with my friend. It was two pork chops, not one, and it reminded me of what pork chops used to taste like before pork become "the other white meat." It was moist, flavorful and perfectly cooked.
Those were the days.
Loved our server!
