Came here for Valentines day dinner.. Overall a decent place... impeccable interior design.. very modern with a beautiful upstairs area... BUT I cant get over the ridiculously chewy skirt steak .. I couldnt even bite into it I had to swallow the pieces I cut whole
Food was not good, menu had no options
Exceptional service and excellent food. Ambience was upscale but pleasantly casual. Great date and group dinner spot.
Food and service was outstanding
Already planning to come back again
Great atmosphere, food, and staff. Really fun date night and Adriano was great - he had great suggestions and everything we tried was amazing. Definitely recommend!
Loved the atmosphere and the service! Had fun tasting the 7 salsas with the guac. The food was tasty and unique. They waiters were awesome! They refilled our chips and some of the salsa's that we liked the most. Everyone loved the food - we had the tacos: Hash Browns, Pastrami, Falafel and Fish. Loved the brussel sprouts. Would go back.
This restaurant is awesome. The food is inventive and EXTREMELY flavorful and delicious. The wait staff knocks it out of the park! ADRIANO - our waiter - was fun, attentive and went out of his way to make sure we were happy with our menu selections, our table and our service. For this, Adriano - Lorraine, Nancy and Pam blow you a kiss! You were the icing on a fantastic restaurant experience. xoxo
Food was good but service was slow and inattentive.
Excellent for work lunch. Service was prompt. Food is excellent, particularly the 3-course prix fixe menu.
I didnt like tacos at all. As a mexican restaurant it s better they have more selection of food. Guacamole was ok. It is ok to me because i like tomatoes in guacamole but they didnt add.
The hostess guy was a total mess. I tried to hang my jacket and i didnt see anyone around who ll be able to help me, so i tried to do it by myself, so hostess literally run to me and said “OMG you cannot go there! It is not allowed ! “ like i was person from street not a guest in a restaurant. But luckily we had a very good and attentive waitress!
But it s not the place that i will recommend to my friends or go there again.
P.S cocktails are really good
a very good option in midtown if you want some Mexican leaning food.
The Octopus tacos were really good.
Good meal & drinks - service ok but slightly variable
Amazzzing! I'm still thinking about my dinner. The fish tacos were the best I've ever had and the guac was awesome.
The service was very spotty we had to wait for the coat check
The waiter was supper nice when he was available but we had a long time for him to be available
The food was nothing special
Loved the food ambiance and overall dining experience. The cuisine was creative and cooked to perfection
Food was good and table service was fine. Biggest frustration is that we showed up right on time (after 3-4 reminders about our reservation) and then waited more than 20 minutes for a table. By the time we finished the place was just about empty. Ridiculous to wait that long for a table when you have a reservation.
Great time at dinner, can't wait to return! Food, wine and service all perfect!
Very nice decor, good food, and rapid service. Probably the most upscale Mexican restaurant one could imagine, catering to the midtown finance crowd. $21 guacamole appetizer says it all.
Inventive, delicious Mexican food, excellent service and attractive ambiance. Don’t miss a chance to enjoy some excellent Mexican wines!
I enjoyed a dinner with family here, initially thinking restaurant week would be a good opportunity to try out the food. Overall the food was good though a bit pricy, good mezcal margarita, and fish tacos. I had the Sea Bream with a verde sauce and chilequiles, the fish was cooked well but the sauce a bit bland. The service was mixed with our waitress at the high top table prompt and efficient but fairly cold and not friendly. The staff at our table upstairs were warmer but they were too aggressive with clearing plates and meals before we were finished, somewhat disrupting the experience. As a whole we enjoyed the experience but I don't know if I can recommend given the price point, mixed staff experiences and other nearby options.
Chef Stupak is from my hometown and our son, who is an Executive Chef in Boston, told my wife and I we need to eat at Empellon. It was fabulous. From the short ribs confit and fish tacos to the the salsas and mescals/tequilas, 5+ stars. Food was brilliantly prepared and the ambience was perfect. All that said, what made the evening was our waitperson Jose. Knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely interested in our experience, he made a great evening complete. Go to Empellon and eat Mexican food the way it is meant to be - savored, high quality, and with the flair of authentic regional food.
This is a wonderful restaurant. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm on a cold NYC evening. The food was excellent and creative ; each bite and each dish from our appetizers to desserts were filled with surprising and unique flavors that were absolutely delicious. But, it was the wait staff that took this restaurant to the next level—the unforgettable experience level. Our server, Adziano, treated us as though we were the only two people in the restaurant. He anticipated our every need with joy and humor and without hovering. He and his cohorts went over and above just about any set of servers I’ve ever experienced. Upon leaving we felt as though we had made a friend; a friend we will see again because the food was wonderful but Adziano made the evening unforgettable.
Another fabulous meal here. Super buzzy vibe and excellent Food. The cocktails are great and all the food is top quality, modern, chic Mexican. The restaurant is dim lit and great for a date or group of friends. Excellent service and really wonderful evening. Would HIGHLY recommend. It’s definitely on the expensive side but worth it. The guacamole and dips are a must as are the fish tacos and the burnt banana ice cream pud.
Great service but they shouldn’t use the tables next to the door where the draft comes through during winter. It was too cold.
Phenomenal, every dish amazing, great unrushed service and what fun.
Overall I enjoyed the dining experience. However, the cocktails were WEAK & the second one was also even after I mentioned it.
Jose and Nunez were a terrific team and were spot on with service and more importantly personality. Food was fantastic, drinks were well balanced and not too boozy. I ate alone a four course meal and pricing was definitely justified. Will definitely make this a staple in every visit to the city. Great job all! Ask for table 201! Best seat in the house! Ask for Jose!
Love love love Empellon!
Excellent faire. Creative. Colorful. Most of all tasty. The Pork dish was better than any barbeque I've ever had anywhere! Helpful professional service. Tasty cocktails(that Pomegranite with Mezcal and smoked salt was divine!) A little pricey over all which will lead me to the downtown branches. Still would highly recommend to everyone who loves outstanding Mexican food.
This place is loud.
Food was variable - tacos, cabbage salad, desserts excellent. $35 skirt steak was tough, salty, fatty, and served with an inedible onion salad thing. Stick to appetizer and any of the tacos would be an interesting meal.
This is a great spot and my second time coming here. this time we had one dish that fell flat but all the others were very good. the beef tar-tar queso was the dish that just did work. I'll be back when someone else is paying as this is not a cheap lunch with $18 dollar cocktails!
Great food, courteous service but small portion for the price.
Amazing food & service
Fantastic experience! Our waitress was superb! The avocado dessert was amazing!
The food was very salty and overall not worth what we paid for the meal.
An outstanding and memorable experience that stands apart from its peer restaurants. The food is inventive and thoroughly delicious without being pretentious. The service, from the maitre'd to the wait staff, was friendly and highly professional--genuinely caring that customers' needs are met and they are happy. The ambience upstairs was perfect--good music, but not overbearing, beautiful open setting, tables spaced well to provide a feeling of intimacy even amidst a full restaurant. Highly recommend for any time of day and for everyday meals or special occasions.
QUE RICO! I lived in Mexico for years and am always on the hunt for top-notch authentically flavored Mexican food. This is it. Plus maybe the best brussel sprouts I have ever eaten. Also loved the spicy cucumber margarita. Five stars all around.
Fish tempura tacos, pastrami tacos & brussel sprouts were all good. Banana ice cream with jasmne sauce lacked flavor. Margaritas were good but not worth $18. price. Service was very good.
After reading good comments about the food I took my teen age son with me to have an early dinner (5:45). We were seated in an alcove are by the front windows, near the door, almost directly under a staircase. I commented how cold if felt and asked if they could adjust the heat - but they couldn't. They offered to move our seat to upstairs ---but I didn't want to be in "Siberia", away from the main room. As well we had sat down, drank water and weren't in a mood to get up. The poor seats set a bad tone for my meal -- every though the food was good, it was cold and at time we felt a strong cold air draft. All for the sake of filling in more tables, the owners put people in that spot (it only accommodates 3 tables or so), as well it was in the front so we served as free advertisement to outside passersby. They may have thought we (a father and his son) were trendy enough to be put in the main dining room --- I don't know. At a minimum they should fire the host who put us there and I'd hope they would remove those tables.
