Great food, nice atmosphere, but amazing amazing service. Ossy and Damien catered to my cousin and I and were spectacular. Friendly, attentive and caring. They represented the restaurant very well. I will 100% be coming back!!!

Outstanding flavor combinations. Highly reccommend the uni/crab nachos, the smoked Black Cod and any of the tacos are fabulous. Nice wine selection and interesting craft cocktails

Highly recommend the crab nachos and octopus tacos. The margaritas are excellent too. The only downside is it's super noisy and the scale slightly kills any ambiance. Recommend the Taqueria in the West Village instead but this is one of the few decent midtown dining options that is good food without being $300 a head.

Empellon is a mixed bag. For those who can lip read, it may be OK, but the noise level is ear-splitting. If you can manage to get one of the two tables near the 53rd Street windows, it gets a tiny bit better. The food has its good news and not-so-good news. The taste is fine. The portions are tiny. On balance, there’s not enough on the plus side to offset the shortfalls.

Really disappointed. Very few diners and so staff had little to do and were too busy talking to each other than pay attention to the guests paying to be there. The wine that was produced by the waiter was a different year to the one we chose on the menu and it was only when we pointed it out that they conceded it was not right. We then received our starters before another bottle we ordered was delivered to the table. Frustrating. The food was lovely however, overall, not worth the effort.

Celebrated my nieces 24th birthday and had a wonderful meal. We did alot of sharing of starters, appetizers, mains and desserts. Of course, enjoyed my favorite Spicy Cucumber Margarita to wash it down.

This is one of Pete Wells's favorite places--despite the fact that he notes that Alex Stupak, the chef-owner sometimes gets a bit bizarre in his approach. Well, that's what happened to us. Margaritas and guacamole were excellent (try the cucumber margarita--it's heavenly!), but then we hit the main course. Two skirt steaks, both ordered medium, arrived kicking on the plate. Both were exceedingly fatty for skirt steaks (when you charge as much as Empellon does, at least you could moderately trim your steaks!). The spice rub on the steaks was to neither of our liking, and we are very eclectic in our taste. The corn ice cream taco for dessert was fine, but nothing special. Having dined at Empellon previously, I have to say that this time was a real disappointment!

The food was good but not great. I do have to say that the service is on point and the environment is Pleasant. However, feel that their attempt to be creative with Mexican food was a bit much for my palate. While I am expansive regarding try things some things should just be left not to be over inventive. That's my take

We always have at least one meal at Empellon whenever we come to New York.
The staff is welcoming and observant. For example the waiter noticed that my partner especially liked one of the eight salsas and brought more without being asked.

I rarely post negative reviews, but our dinner here was exceptional (and not in a good way). Getting the good out of the way first: The kitchen obviously prioritizes presentation; the dishes coming out looking ready for a magazine shoot. Ok...that was the good; onto dinner: I ordered the pork chop and it came to the table medium rare. There is no way this pork was safe to eat, so I sent it back. By the time it came to the table my wife had finished her dinner. (By the way, though an ENORMOUS piece of meat, the sauce was most reminiscent of the gravy on thin-sliced roast beef in the diners of my youth, lacking any punch, and merely covering the smokey flavor of the bacon wrapped chop.) Her fish was truly an odd dish. It was butterflied and covered with chips and what I think were sliced tomatillos, kind of like a semi-soggy, cheese-less, greenish nacho. The fish itself was bland. (As to the appetizers, the guacamole was unexceptional and without any heat, and the crab nachos were nothing to write home (or here) about, the sea urchin added nothing to the dish). We asked to take the pork home, but the kitchen couldn't find any bags, so stuffed it in an umbrella bag. So strange. We were comped two mini-ice cream tacos. They were probably the best thing we ate. Anyway, one of the employees caught us as we were leaving to offer apologies for the meal, saying he didn't cook the food or forget to order the bags. I had already taken that into account and left a standard tip. They say you get what you pay for, and perhaps since I was using an Open Table reward certificate, I should be happy that I paid (out of pocket) nothing. It was certainly what this dinner was worth.

Love the flight of salsas and the guacamole! Also very tasty drinks. My only regret is that I didn’t go in totally famished so I could’ve eaten more!

The crab nachos, octopus tacos, and fish tacos were amazing! We don't know the name of the lady who served us but she was equally amazing, authentic, friendly and just brilliant! The margaritas were strong and smokey. Would very much recommend this.

I am familiar with restaurantes that serve contemporary, fusion-like Mexican food in New York City and Mexico City. Empellón does a great job of preparing creative dishes still with generous portions that make the experience last longer. The sticky tamal is a creative, well rounded, and a pleasant dish. It was a nice surprise to find Mexican wines, which are rarely found in the United States. Desserts are intriguing and, in particular, the avocado is an excellent dessert.

This is a good choice for a business lunch that's creative and fun, without feeling too stuffy or pretentious. I thought the Mexican food was excellent and the prix-fixe menu looked like a good value.

Great food and a very comfortable environment. Host and hostess are always very welcoming, table is available immediately when reserved, and service is excellent. A nice option for midtown business lunch.

Delicious, creative food and cocktails. Environment was warm and conversation-inducing. The service was exceptional. Our waiter immediately met our individual needs, with vegetarian suggestions and several other recommendations. Wait staff was friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend!

I was especially impressed by the GM, who gave our table two complimentary desserts; I think he recognized me, since I do eat there with some frequency. I would recommend the upstairs rather than the downstairs, since the noise level is lower. Beautiful setting, original ingredients and plating; everyone loves the 7 salsas which accompany the guacamole. I took a major wine and food writer there, and he loved it as well, especially the cocktails. Vaut le voyage.

With dishes like a delicious fish tempura taco, Empellon Midtown - like Alex Stupak's other two Empellon restaurants in NYC - offers a nouveau take on traditional Mexican cuisine. If you like Mexican, you must give it a try.

An interesting menu and worthwhile for a special occasion. Some of the staff very nice but our main waiter was very surely. Very expensive so beware.

We returned to Empellón for the second time after going during Restaurant Week in July and loved this visit just as much, if not more! Every dish was outstanding! You can taste the love and care put into every detail of every meal. Our server Ozzy was also top notched and provided an excellent dining experience, along with the entire wait staff.
