Ella Kitchen & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Our waiter brought us our check immediately after the meal, without ever showing us a dessert menu or asking to see if we wanted coffee or tea, so we left and went elsewhere for that. The tables are way too close for comfort. The gal at the adjacent table who was literally elbow to elbow with us, had a fork in one hand and her phone in the other the entire, and I mean entire meal. This out of touch behavior seemed to be indicative of many of the clientele there. If you are looking to enjoy a meal, where you can actually hear the person across from you, have a little space, and not be annoyed by people's faces lit up by their phone at the next table, this is not the place for you.
While this was a nice place to meet my friend, have a drink which was good (mulled hot cider) he food was a bit disappointing. I only ordered scrambled eggs, rosemary potatoes and toast. The eggs were dried a bit, even after requesting them being soft scrambled. Toast was great. A nice bread, grilled.
I ate at Ella's for the first time last Sunday for my bday. The staff seated us before everyone arrived and kept us happy with drink orders until our table was full. The food was delish and very fresh. The staff could not have been more attentive even though the place was packed. Our waitress even wished me a happy bday as we left. I will definitely return.
My wife and I had dinner before a show at Lincoln Center on Dec. 14. First, excellent and attentive service from our waiter (sorry I don't remember his name). We decided to share a few small plates rather than a separate larger dinners and it was terrific. The smoky sprouts in particular was a home run. Nice atmosphere, comfortable and a fun vibe inside. Would definitely go again.
Ella went above and beyond to make our dinner there great. I went for my girlfriend's birthday and they went out of their way to make it feel special for her. Balloons, singing, candles... The manager came out to check on us and wish her a happy birthday. Our waiter was great and the food was delicious!
Don't go here. We had concert ticketed and our table was not ready when we got there. They basically told us they seated someone at our table who said they'd be done. The people would not get up and they let us continue to stand in the drafty doorway. After 15 minutes we left since last time our food was not good. Never going again.
I wish I was writing a better review because the menu sounded delicious. It’s just hard not to be jaded when your waiter forgets about you (and it’s not a large room) and doesn’t notice that you’ve had no food for 50 minutes. It was nice that they gave us a free drink each, but we ended up having to rush, and the food was ok but not brilliant.
Did their best to ruin thanksgiving for my family. I had a valid reservation but they called two minutes before the reserved time to l leave a voicemail asking “if I was coming”. Of course I was. As I walked in the door, one female told my kids and I that we had to leave cos they were closed. Then another guy comes and said they want to close and if I want to order I need to be fast. They gave me a limited menu to choose from which is not what had been advertised. Very bad experience and thankfully I ended up with a great dinner elsewhere.
Food was varied and delicious and lots of healthy options. We were lost in conversation when we realized that our meal seemed to be taking forever to get to us. The waitress responded immediately and finally brought our meal. Service slow but worth the wait.
My friends and I made a reservation for Saturday brunch at Ella expecting the standard to-do of the nyc brunch scene. For the most part, that's what we got. The food was good and came in a timely manner, the drinks were the proper strength, and the vibe was alight with the typical buzz. What set Ella apart for me was the service! After years of brunching with (understandably) disinterested and overworked wait staff, my standards are admittedly a bit low. Despite the ubiquitous drunkenness and menu alterations, our waitress was attentive and kind. Unexpected find, will be returning!
Good food, attentive and friendly service, lovely restaurant - I'll definitely return. I shouldn't complain about noise at a small, popular restaurant on the Upper West Side on a Friday night, I suppose, but it was difficult to hear anything my companion said. Is there anything that can be done about the sound level?
Been to every brunch place in a 10 mile radius and this one was just meh, IMHO. Omelets were greasy and overcooked, staff were surly and/or clumsy, space was cramped and surprisingly loud. Saw a wait outside when I left and cannot figure out what is worth all the fuss. Would go in a pinch, but many better options in this neighborhood.
Every time I come to dine here, I am happy. The food is delicious, well-prepared and presented. I tried the mushroom coquettes, the Ella empanadas and the steak skewers this time and each one gave me a special flavor, sauce and experience that will continue to bring me back. Their tequila reposado was a smooth taste as well...Our girlfriends' reunion was special and they were both happy with their choices.
I feel like I am known, recognized and appreciated for coming back. (I held my 60th birthday brunch here last December and have been back several times since then - even though it isn't exactly in my neighborhood...it's worth it!) Until the next time!
