Contemporary American
Perfect For:
  • Fit for Foodies
  • Neighborhood Gem
  • Creative Cuisine
In November of 2011, chef Jason Cichonski opened Ela, an inventive new American bar and restaurant in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood. Ela showcases 27-year-old Cichonski, who Philadelphia Inquirer’s Craig LaBan called “one of our most exciting young chefs,” is combining an approachable menu of innovative dishes with an extensive wine and craft beer program and inspired cocktail list in a rustic-modern setting.
“Creatively, it’s wonderfully freeing to prepare food that doesn’t fit into any one genre or style; this is seasonal food, using exceptional ingredients, prepared perfectly,” says Chef Cichonski. Ela is a serious-yet-comfortable restaurant with a menu that that changes frequently throughout the year, to reflect the latest offerings.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Intimate, pretty and very very dim lighting. Overall the atmosphere was nice (even though you needed a candle to read the menu.) We chose the 4-course tasting menu. We had the kale salad and burrata to start. Kale salad was good, not incredible but a solid kale salad and the almonds added a nice bite. The burrata was just mozzarella, it lacked the creaminess that is burrata. But either way cheese is cheese and I ate it happily. Next we got the scallop noodles and gnocchi. The gnocchi was fabulous and my favorite thing I ate there. Scallop noodles, though super creative being in the form of a noodle, just tasted like scallops, nothing more nothing less. Next we had the steak and the pork shoulder. The steak was excellent, but the pork shoulder was all fat and too undercooked for my liking. Would I come back? Yeah, but I wouldn’t be the one paying.

Energetic ambience. Everyone enjoying great food and exceptional, caring service.
If you want great food amongst people having a fun time, and you can accept a little noise as the price of this experience, you will be rewarded. If you’re not sure, look elsewhere; that will insure I’ll be able to snag a table next time I wish to return.

Always enjoy the tasting menu here...I'd say the 4 courses is a bit too much to eat, but everything was super tasty. Also, the cookie dough is my favorite dessert in Philly!

Had a wonderful meal here without knowing the back story behind the chef (was on Top Chef). My business partner and I deferred to the server for recommendations on the menu and the resulting meal was absolutely top notch and incredibly creative. As my dining partner noted, one of the ways to evaluate a chef and restaurant is how well they handle chicken and the entree he ordered was absolutely unbelievable - moist, flavorful throughout, stellar presentation. I had the pork shoulder and was equally pleased with the flavor and presentation. One other item that is absolutely not to be missed is the day scallops prepared as a "pasta", which is apparently the chef's signature dish from Top Chef. Really a very pleasant surprise - almost like a fettucini alfredo with the sweet flavor of scallop. Will definitely be going back and soon.

Really good food. Limited menu- thought it would be an issue- but with the imaginative specials, there was no problem. Sat outside, or it would’ve been noisier than we like. Best waiter ever

We hadn't dined at Ela in quite a while and were wondering if the kitchen was still as impressive as on our last visit. It is. There were 4 in our party so we were able to sample quite a bit of the menu. The deep fried octopus, the beef rib ravioli, the crispy chicken (incredibly tender and moist on the interior due to a sous vide preparation), and the desserts were all exceptional. Ela remains one of Philly's best restaurants.

We did the chef’s tasting and it was top-notch. Portions were perfect, flavors were all unique but there was continuity through the night. I found myself clapping every time they presented a dish and explained the ingredients. Really a great time - highly recommend.

The only complaint I have here is that their food tends to be a bit on the salty side. Other than that, the place is great and service is fantastic.

We went for Philly Wine Week and did the deal for 5 small bites paired with 5 wines for $55. The food was delicious. All were unique, flavorful bites, slightly different from the norm. My favorite was the hot chocolate chocolate chip cookie dessert. So delicious and gooey and perfect! Great ambiance and friendly staff. Will definitely be making a trip back!

We had a great time this past Sunday when we went to Ela for brunch. We were seated quickly, the food was wonderful, and the space itself has a really nice vibe. We ordered a few things--two savory, one sweet--and everything was delicious. The presentation of my scrambled egg dish with some really tasty ingredients made it even better. I would absolutely go back, especially to try out the bring-your-own-champagne-for-mimosas deal!

Really good food. Decor was not great and service was very frustrating. Seemed like it may have been limited to our specific server.

Stopped in for brunch (currently on Sunday mornings only). Tried the french omelette and gnocchi as well as the kale & barley salad. The omelette was a little wet but good otherwise. The gnocchi was very well done. Salad was a good add-on.

Open table rewards was very simple.

We went here to celebrate my birthday and we all enjoyed our meals a lot. I found the restaurant just a bit chilly, perhaps b/c of all the windows. We found the menu rather limited (there were only 15 options total, not counting drinks or desserts), but we all found delicious options among these. There was a slight push toward ordering 1 from each of 3 groupings, but we made do with just 2 from the 3 groups and that was enough. We began with drinks and I thought the mixed drinks were a bit unusual and not that appealing to me, the beers to be less extensive in range than many places these days, but we found some things we liked. I and a friend both found the starter to be quite interesting and delectable: the DIVER SCALLOP NOODLES | black truffle cream | applewood bacon | spinach | bread crumbs . I found it creamy and satisfying, pleasantly unusual. Our other friend raved about the KALE & BARLEY SALAD | roasted root vegetables | ricotta salada | walnuts | sherry-dijon vinaigrette , which I have to say looked quite tempting.
2 of us had the CRISPY ORGANIC CHICKEN | little noodle ditalini | brussels sprouts | chorizo | pecorino. I thought the amount of chicken was quite generous: 3 large and savory pieces of skinless, boneless chicken, and they liked the very tasty part underneath the chicken. I got the ROASTED MONKFISH TAIL | black rice | broccolini | chipotle-miso | 26. The portion size was just a bit smaller than I might expect for this price, but it was luscious, meaty, and had a great and slightly spicy sauce that went well w/ the fish, rice, and broccolini. We also started with some tasty, warmed bread that came with some garlic-infused olive oil. Really tasty.
We really enjoyed our meal here and were able to have a good conversation b/c it was not too loud, which is often a pet peeve of mine.

Good food and ambience overall, but subpar service, even on a quiet night. I may be tempted to try it again as the food was good, but definitely not on my must-repeat list.

Ela for brunch was amazing. I initially set out to date my husband Sunday after church and invited some friends after I booked the reservation on Open table. The staff at the restaurant were able to accommodate our party from 2 - 4 with no problems. I was a bit worried about the size of the restaurant because most dining areas in South Philly are typically small. This corner restaurant was bigger than I expected. Waiter was very knowledgeable of the oysters/menu. Bottomless chicken and waffles were definitely a treat. Waffle came out a bit overcooked the first round. We asked for a small adjustment and the next 2 rounds of waffles were superb. I looked forward to dining again at Ela. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.

I went for valentines day (well the saturday after). They were offering a 4 or 6 course tasting menu. The service was attentive and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. The restaurant as a whole hit just the right vibe for celebrating my first valentines day with my bf.

Very busy Valentine's Day dinner. They added a row of tables to accommodate the crowd. Kitchen and service very stressed. The roast monkfish waited under a heat lamp too long and dried out a bit. Salmon carpaccio was excellent. Wine pairings were good. Discounting for the circumstances I will give dinner another try.

We were very disappointed in the change in the menus options AND the food. We have dined here about 6 times before. We kept returning because the food was very well prepared and we especially liked the option of getting a 4 course pre-fix dinner.

We haven’t been in around a year. Last night we learned we no longer had the 4 course option. Now we had to order al’ a carte. This made the dinner far less fun and far more costly.

We decided to share a “first” kale salad plate and a “second” scallop noodles plate. The salad was quite tiny and uninspiring. The scallop dish was more generous but the sauce was too rich for my partner to enjoy.

For entrees , my partner got the strip steak and I got the cod. We both found the entrees wanting. We didn’t finish them and left the meal hungry. My cod had an overly heavy, fennel-based sauce; it just didn’t taste very good. My partner’s steak was tough and had little flavor at all.
We skipped dessert.

Ela is a cozy but chic restaurant in a cool part of Queen Village. They have great drinks an we thoroughly enjoyed the cheese plate appetizers. We were advised to pick one thing from each section of the menu, but it turns out the entree portion was perfect for feeling full but not overly so. The pork loin was excellent.

Small, cozy gem. This restaurant is located just south of the South Street bedlam. That said, the street is very quiet. While the building looks a little boring, the inside is anything but. It's vibrant and cozy at the same time. The food selections are uniquely original and very tasty. They also have a wonderful drink selection.
