In November of 2011, chef Jason Cichonski opened Ela, an inventive new American bar and restaurant in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood. Ela showcases 27-year-old Cichonski, who Philadelphia Inquirer’s Craig LaBan called “one of our most exciting young chefs,” is combining an approachable menu of innovative dishes with an extensive wine and craft beer program and inspired cocktail list in a rustic-modern setting.

Very busy Valentine's Day dinner. They added a row of tables to accommodate the crowd. Kitchen and service very stressed. The roast monkfish waited under a heat lamp too long and dried out a bit. Salmon carpaccio was excellent. Wine pairings were good. Discounting for the circumstances I will give dinner another try.
We were very disappointed in the change in the menus options AND the food. We have dined here about 6 times before. We kept returning because the food was very well prepared and we especially liked the option of getting a 4 course pre-fix dinner.
We haven’t been in around a year. Last night we learned we no longer had the 4 course option. Now we had to order al’ a carte. This made the dinner far less fun and far more costly.
We decided to share a “first” kale salad plate and a “second” scallop noodles plate. The salad was quite tiny and uninspiring. The scallop dish was more generous but the sauce was too rich for my partner to enjoy.
For entrees , my partner got the strip steak and I got the cod. We both found the entrees wanting. We didn’t finish them and left the meal hungry. My cod had an overly heavy, fennel-based sauce; it just didn’t taste very good. My partner’s steak was tough and had little flavor at all.
We skipped dessert.
We brought friends with us this time. The meal was delicious. We have never been disappointed. Chef Jason is charming and came out to say hello. We have had the tasting menu in the past and it was amazing. Everyone was happy with their choices. Service was excellent.
Ela is a cozy but chic restaurant in a cool part of Queen Village. They have great drinks an we thoroughly enjoyed the cheese plate appetizers. We were advised to pick one thing from each section of the menu, but it turns out the entree portion was perfect for feeling full but not overly so. The pork loin was excellent.
Small, cozy gem. This restaurant is located just south of the South Street bedlam. That said, the street is very quiet. While the building looks a little boring, the inside is anything but. It's vibrant and cozy at the same time. The food selections are uniquely original and very tasty. They also have a wonderful drink selection.
the food was delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful! Besides it being a little chilly inside we had a great experience! We went for brunch and everything looked so good it was hard to choose! The cornbread waffles were perfect and the caramel sauce on top was unreal. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes good food!
We choose Ela's 3 course Monday night pre-fixe dinner because "3 bites" is just the right size for us. Each course was delicious and the service attentive. The half price bottle of French chardonnay we ordered topped it off, it was very good. Highly recommend!
It was ok. Portions are definitely smaller than expected and for the value. Cauliflower dish is overpriced for sure! Would also be nice to have more vegan friendly options than 1 dish on the entire menu. Server was weird about pushing us to purchase desserts even after we shared that we had a birthday cake at home waiting for us to continue our celebration and enjoy. So, prolly wouldn't go back.
We tried this restaurant because we were visiting someone in Jefferson hospital nearby. We did have a reservation, but they sat us at a table in between two other tables that were so close we were practically on top of them. It was impossible not to hear their conversations. Very awkward. The menu is very eclectic. Strange choices. I had the pork loin which was tasteless and tough. The Apple salad was tasty. My husband enjoyed the scallop noodles as an appetizer and he also enjoyed his trout as a main course.
We are in our 50s and the restaurant was just too new wave for us.
Went for brunch with friends and my toddler. The food was really delicious! I had the biscuits with chicken sausage gravy which was recommended by our server. Service was efficient and very accommodating in terms of stroller parking and high chair. I ordered her toast and they brought out thick cut challah toast-nice touch! It wasn't at all crowded, so definitely a good place to go with my daughter and we'll be back for brunch.
I live very close to Ela, but never dined. I'd seen the great brunch reviews on line and in the paper, so decided to take visiting relatives there for dinner. The oysters weren't our favorite as the sauce had an aftertaste which didn't enhance, but every other dish blew us away. From bread to dessert, every dish was composed and beautiful with nuance and culinary artistry. The flavors were outstanding. We are all foodies and licked our plates. A glorious surprise.
Our dinner at Ela was lovely, all around. I was visiting some friends in Philly, and Ela came recommended from a chef friend (we're in the industry too) for one friend's birthday celebration. Our cocktails were thoughtful and delightful, and we shared several different plates from different categories of the menu. Everything tasted carefully prepared and delicious. Half price bottled wine selections on Monday nights was a nice little bonus. Our server was attentive and informative, and very helpful in helping us create our meal. We were disappointed not to see more guests, as our experience was memorable and fun, and perfect for our low-key birthday celebration. Definitely recommended.
Ela had a great ambiance, delicious food, helpful staff but a pretty crummy BYO champagne situation for brunch. Some friends and I met up at Ela for Brunch on Sunday recently and decided to bring some champagne after we saw that the Ela website heavily advertised their Sunday Brunch with BYO champagne for mimosa's. When we got their, a table was held for our reservation and we were pleasantly seated by a friendly and polite waiter, he demeanor dropped a little bit after we declined drinks and informed him that we had brought out own champagne for mimosa's. We asked what the set up for that was and he said that we would have to purchase their orange juice and for 2 bottles worth of champagne it would be $16 for a bottle orange juice, the house mimosa sells for $8. That's a lot for orange juice but it wasn't anything we didn't expect so we agreed to it and he opened our first bottle, put it on ice, and poured for us - a really nice touch, he also poured out OJ for us and continued to do until both champagne bottles were empty. This is where I have an issue, when our bottles were empty our orange juice was whisked away too. Orange juice we paid $16 for, I figured if it's paid for we should be entitled to the full amount, which I would have gladly sipped on sans champagne.
Service was inexplicably bad. We joked that it was like someone had called out and his father agreed to fill in. Totally inept service: drinks forgotten, courses served differently than ordered without warning, things spilled. Not ok for a restaurant of this level.
We were six in our group for a Saturday evening and elected to get the 5 course special meal as the restaurant was celebrating its sixth anniversary. The bread and oil that starts off the meal is great. They were very obliging and permitted some changes according to the taste of the individual. We could have opted for the a la carte menu but no one did. The foie gras course was wonderful as were all the dishes. Our group did not go with the menu but went for a diverse selection. I had the pork dish which was excellent and very filling. I always wonder what treasures Jason keeps in his kitchen to be so versatile and inventive. The wait staff was excellent so our group dallied for quite some time. We left without feeling rushed. It is always a delightful meal.
Service was a little slow and needed to be flagged a few times but not to the point of wanting to leave. They has an event going on which slowed things down, and my dinner should have been excellent but it was on the cool sid eby the time it got to the table.
