About Ela

In November of 2011, chef Jason Cichonski opened Ela, an inventive new American bar and restaurant in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood. Ela showcases 27-year-old Cichonski, who Philadelphia Inquirer’s Craig LaBan called “one of our most exciting young chefs,” is combining an approachable menu of innovative dishes with an extensive wine and craft beer program and inspired cocktail list in a rustic-modern setting.
“Creatively, it’s wonderfully freeing to prepare food that doesn’t fit into any one genre or style; this is seasonal food, using exceptional ingredients, prepared perfectly,” says Chef Cichonski. Ela is a serious-yet-comfortable restaurant with a menu that that changes frequently throughout the year, to reflect the latest offerings.

We tried this restaurant because we were visiting someone in Jefferson hospital nearby. We did have a reservation, but they sat us at a table in between two other tables that were so close we were practically on top of them. It was impossible not to hear their conversations. Very awkward. The menu is very eclectic. Strange choices. I had the pork loin which was tasteless and tough. The Apple salad was tasty. My husband enjoyed the scallop noodles as an appetizer and he also enjoyed his trout as a main course.
We are in our 50s and the restaurant was just too new wave for us.

Chef Cichonski is a true master of his craft. Each course was more impressive than the last. We asked out completely stuffed because everything was so amazing. Definitely recommend. One of the best restaurants in Philadelphia hands down!

Went for brunch with friends and my toddler. The food was really delicious! I had the biscuits with chicken sausage gravy which was recommended by our server. Service was efficient and very accommodating in terms of stroller parking and high chair. I ordered her toast and they brought out thick cut challah toast-nice touch! It wasn't at all crowded, so definitely a good place to go with my daughter and we'll be back for brunch.

I live very close to Ela, but never dined. I'd seen the great brunch reviews on line and in the paper, so decided to take visiting relatives there for dinner. The oysters weren't our favorite as the sauce had an aftertaste which didn't enhance, but every other dish blew us away. From bread to dessert, every dish was composed and beautiful with nuance and culinary artistry. The flavors were outstanding. We are all foodies and licked our plates. A glorious surprise.

Our dinner at Ela was lovely, all around. I was visiting some friends in Philly, and Ela came recommended from a chef friend (we're in the industry too) for one friend's birthday celebration. Our cocktails were thoughtful and delightful, and we shared several different plates from different categories of the menu. Everything tasted carefully prepared and delicious. Half price bottled wine selections on Monday nights was a nice little bonus. Our server was attentive and informative, and very helpful in helping us create our meal. We were disappointed not to see more guests, as our experience was memorable and fun, and perfect for our low-key birthday celebration. Definitely recommended.

Ela had a great ambiance, delicious food, helpful staff but a pretty crummy BYO champagne situation for brunch. Some friends and I met up at Ela for Brunch on Sunday recently and decided to bring some champagne after we saw that the Ela website heavily advertised their Sunday Brunch with BYO champagne for mimosa's. When we got their, a table was held for our reservation and we were pleasantly seated by a friendly and polite waiter, he demeanor dropped a little bit after we declined drinks and informed him that we had brought out own champagne for mimosa's. We asked what the set up for that was and he said that we would have to purchase their orange juice and for 2 bottles worth of champagne it would be $16 for a bottle orange juice, the house mimosa sells for $8. That's a lot for orange juice but it wasn't anything we didn't expect so we agreed to it and he opened our first bottle, put it on ice, and poured for us - a really nice touch, he also poured out OJ for us and continued to do until both champagne bottles were empty. This is where I have an issue, when our bottles were empty our orange juice was whisked away too. Orange juice we paid $16 for, I figured if it's paid for we should be entitled to the full amount, which I would have gladly sipped on sans champagne.

The 6 course tasting menu was well thought out and presented. The highlights include the scallop noodles, Crudo, and boneless short ribs. The half price wine on a quite Monday was nice as well.

Service was inexplicably bad. We joked that it was like someone had called out and his father agreed to fill in. Totally inept service: drinks forgotten, courses served differently than ordered without warning, things spilled. Not ok for a restaurant of this level.

We were six in our group for a Saturday evening and elected to get the 5 course special meal as the restaurant was celebrating its sixth anniversary. The bread and oil that starts off the meal is great. They were very obliging and permitted some changes according to the taste of the individual. We could have opted for the a la carte menu but no one did. The foie gras course was wonderful as were all the dishes. Our group did not go with the menu but went for a diverse selection. I had the pork dish which was excellent and very filling. I always wonder what treasures Jason keeps in his kitchen to be so versatile and inventive. The wait staff was excellent so our group dallied for quite some time. We left without feeling rushed. It is always a delightful meal.

Service was a little slow and needed to be flagged a few times but not to the point of wanting to leave. They has an event going on which slowed things down, and my dinner should have been excellent but it was on the cool sid eby the time it got to the table.

Philly foodie gem. I picked this one out for my birthday, and I nailed it. Myself and three others. Location: Queen Village with a bit of South Street funk spillover. Great walking neighborhood. Place is perfect sized, a little private area in the back, really nicely done in urbo-industrio (just made that up). It is relatively quiet.
From the top: Service was charmingly erratic, but no problem whatsoever. Cocktails really are artisinal ( grossly overused term, ikr?). Good tap. Menu is relatively simple, you'll also get the specials, chef's tasting, etc. Locavore, too. We tasted around, everything was amazing. Presentation nice but not overdone (a pet peeve...) It was such a great evening, I'm almost afraid to go back. It was a Monday, customarily an off night for many places, but no worries, busy but not crowded. Well, I'm going to go back anyway. My new favorite.

We dined here prior to a TLA show. To start, we were given amazing fresh bread with smoked olive oil. We couldn't get enough of that olive oil! And we had a cheese plate with three local cheeses. They were amazing choices. We each had two of the very creative and delicious cocktails. Everything was wonderful, creative, beautiful to look at, and well done.

Some the best tasting food my girlfriend and I have ever eaten, but also inventive while not being pretentious. The Diver Scallop Noodles were amazing, a must try! The service was great, Joe was super attentive and informative. The drinks were tasty and we got there early to enjoy some happy hour which was a good value.

The food is absolutely incredible. We decided to indulge in the 6 course tasting menu. The menu can be crafted to your liking. For instance, my boyfriend and I love octopus which was not part of the tasting menu so we asked for it to be incorporated and the chef was able to supplement one of the dishes for us. He created something off the menu and off of the tasting which was to die for. At the end, the chef introduced himself and made sure we loved everything, which was impossible not to.

Food, drinks, atmosphere, everything was perfect.

One of the best meals my wife and I have had in a while. Phenomenal Spanish Octopus appetizer --perfectly cooked. The pork tenderloin and albacore entrees were excellent. Imaginatively composed flavors across the board, including The Manhattan --or The Staten Island as it was.

Ela offers inviting ambience, exceptional service, and top-notch food. The prices are a bit high, and the menu is somewhat limited, but there are both small plates and entrees from which to choose, and everything we tried was prepared with care and delicious. Their chicken dish served with barley and cabbage was moist and flavorful. A tilefish special was perfectly cooked and served in an aromatic sauce. Their wine menu is not extensive - they only offer one cabernet sauvignon, for instance - but it was reasonably priced ($42/bottle), and we all agreed it was excellent. This is a good place for dinner with a date or friends when you want something a bit more special.

We hadn't been to this restaurant in a very long time, and their kale salad with citrus was missing! The service was very quick, and the food was tasty but a bit overly salted. We don't drink alcohol so it wasn't a good ploy, if that was what they were after. Our soup was delicious, but it came from a terrine that was so small, and then split in half! I actually reminded that we ordered two separate orders! But she insisted that it was. Yikes! One of the dishes had meat, and I am a vegetarian so we asked for it on the side. My friend who does eat meat, could not even eat it. He said it doesn't taste good, and left the whole thing! He said it was definitely not worth the money. That was a $15 dish that wasn't even eaten. It's a shame, we used to love this place.

We went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary and wanted a nice meal and bottle of wine. They had advertised half-price wine that night, but all of the wines on special were very low end, so we asked to see the full wine list. The wait staff was quite nice but could not advise us on a wine, so they brought over the manager. She recommended an expensive bottle of Super Tuscan, so we purchased this, but it was terrible, just very poor quality like bubble gum and undrinkable. We asked if she had anything better, and she tried to steer us to the most expensive bottle (Amarone) on the menu even though it was far too young (2015) and she was unable to vouch for it. All of this took quite long, since every request took 15+ minutes, and our food arrived before we had any wine. The manager was quite annoyed that she had to deal with us, was running back and forth a lot but not stopping to check on us, even when we were waiting for her. The food was fine, not exceptional but tasty, but the attitude of the manager almost spoiled our night until we left and went elsewhere where they appreciated guests, went overboard to make us happy and we had a wonderful meal and excellent wine as we had hoped to at Ela.

Unfortunately the chef was either away, or worse, gone all together. Our starters were good; the seafood crudo excellent and the standard I was expecting, the octopus was enjoyed by my guest but was trying too hard in my view. The pastas were ok; average gnocchi and ravioli, that again my guest liked, but I found had an odd note. Third course just okay and desserts not worth ordering. One billed as fresh fruit water ice was more like dissolved sugar.
Hope this place can return to its previous standard. The restaurant was completely empty except for us, perhaps the word is already out.

First, second, and third bites were all delicious. Dessert was less impressive - almost stomache-inducing sweet. I wish I'd opted out of that course as it left a bad taste in my mouth after an otherwise near perfect meal.
