About El Paseo

Originally built in the mid-1940s, the history of the Bay Area is woven deeply into the construction of El Paseo. The bricks walling in the quaint warren of rooms were reclaimed from landfill from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the thick beams, supporting many of the ceilings, were rail ties from the gravity trains used to bring visitors up Mount Tamalpais’ East Peak at the turn of the last century. Designed by noted architect Gus Costigan, who sketched his designs while serving in WWII, El Paseo is a soulful and authentic example of the California Mission-Style. With this incredible history in mind and a near life-long tradition of celebratory family meals spent at El Paseo (birthdays, Mother’s Days, recording contracts… you get the idea) Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar financed the meticulous two-year restoration of the property; a restoration which has enhanced El Paseo’s warmth and accentuated its timeless appeal.

Broccoli was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Will go back just for the broccoli! Ordered a steak and it was fatty throughout--tasted ok. Sadly disappointed in the french fries that accompanied the steak.

I'd go again. Service was overall good, food hot, good drinks but I probably would not order a big steak, pot de crème or sit at the same table because of a few gripes: medium rare steak arrived rare/uncooked inside...not unusual but waiter did not check until I ate what I could and took balance home. A sauce would help because the steaks alone are a little dry and a square of swiss style cheese semi melted on top is not for me. Serrated steak knife was large, dull and made for sawing not cutting...no excuse for a steakhouse. No tablecloth/covering for wooden planked tables in south of restaurant and difficult to read menu because of inadequate lighting. Pot de crème, the ultimate dessert, was just okay.

We enjoyed our appetizers and dinners very much. The steak tartare had watercress accompanying it which was nice and tangy. We both ordered halibut as the main course and both of us thought it was great. Seared on the outside but still moist and tender throughout.
There were nicely prepared vegetables served underneath and alongside that were both flavorful and a good compliment to the fish. The pot de creme was heavenly. Service was attentive and not overbearing. We'll be back.

This is the first time I've ever left a negative review on OpenTable. I would love to support our local restaurant. Service was pretty good and the ambiance is delightful, but the food was very mediocre. Our halibut was very overcooked and basically inedible. My cocktail was tasteless.

We are locals who had not been to this restaurant for some time as it went through several ownerships and menu styles. It seemed like it was time to give it a try. Unfortunately, the splendid ambiance couldn't make up for the disappointing preparation of the entrées which were overcooked and tasteless. It's a beautiful spot. We hope that they can get their act together.

This was a special occasion for us & we chose El Paseo for the romantic setting. We indicated it was our anniversary (33rd) in our reservation, but were seated in the bar section of the restaurant: small table, by the door, noisy: not romantic at all.

Cozy and welcoming, a perfect place for a cool Fall evening in the heart of Mill Valley. Creative menu - the duck was pefect November fare as were roasted brussel sprouts with chunky bacon lardons. A definite go back to place.

Cozy, romantic spot with food that strikes a perfect balance between inventive and comfort food.
The chef is relatively new. The atmosphere has always been wonderful - a number of different, small rooms, which keeps it intimate. Now the food has taken a leap into more interesting styles and flavors, but without sacrificing the basics.

We went there for my birthday. My sister was in town and wanted to try it out. We all felt it was lackluster. One might like the darkness of the restaurant but we needed to use the lights on our phones to read the menu. The table setting was bare of anything to warm it up. My husbands fish was devoid of flavor and the onions were tough. My sister and I had the Bolognese and I think the chef tried to put a spin on it with pomegranate seeds but really a good pasta dish doesn't need that on it. Also no bread on table nothing. Just a very Boring experience all around. Well say the waitress was very nice and her service was great.

The rating is largely based on the price vs value. El Paseo for it's scant menu selections and the list item prices, would not impress anyone I'd send there.
We had an 8pm seating. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived on time, however, the host was apologetic about it and guided us to the bar. The server then came to us twice while we were waiting for our table @ the bar, to apologize for having us wait for our table, and subsequently to bring us to our table 15 minutes later. He was very polite about it, so extra points for that.

The food certainly didn't meet expectations. I can't say much more than that to describe it. I absolutely love a hearty bolognese, and this simply wasn't it. Flavorless. I would have been more lenient on my rating but since the options are so limited (8 items), it is fair to expect that each dish would be above satisfactory (4-5 star). My wife order the pan roasted duck. She was a bit more disappointed than I was.

We no longer eat out as much as we used to (pre-children), and when we go out again, El Paseo will sadly not be on our list of considerations.

Advice: if you're going to serve a select menu, absolutely nail *every* item.

Our first visit to El Paseo for my birthday and we had a fabulous time! We are both British and the wood tables and brickwork reminded us of home. Food was outstanding. Can't wait to return!

The smoked trout avocado toast is delicious and very filling for an appetizer. Salad with green goddess dressing very bland. Love the European atmosphere. Even though staff was told there was a birthday at the table, no acknowledgement was made.

Maybe we picked a bad night. We were finally getting together with friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Having eaten at El Paseo several times in the past we thought we knew what to expect. We were excited that they now have a full bar and a new chef. They failed to deliver on almost everything. We arrived punctually at 7:30 and were seated promptly. Then we sat. No water. No bread. No offer of cocktails. After 25 minutes I went back up to the hostess and mentioned that it might be nice to have a drink. The waitress finally arrived in a huff and took our drink orders and our appetizer order - sort of...she was simultaneously trying to take an order from the table next to us. Weird. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and grilled padron peppers. I had to inquire about my drink 10 minutes and I was told the manager would be bringing it out momentarily (he didn’t). The first thing the bus boy brought out was...a “little gem” salad. We mentioned that we hadn’t ordered a salad so he took it back and the sprouts were brought out. They were very good, cooked with lardon. Next out came —a little gem salad. We sent it back again. A few minutes later out came — another little gem salad. You cannot make this up. The bus boys were thoroughly confused. The peppers finally came out a good 15 minutes after the sprouts. The first one I ate was mild and the next one basically ruined my mouth for the rest of the night. When we commented there was too much time between the apps, the waitress said that “share plates are brought out as they are ready” (they sure make little gem salads quickly).

For our mains we had one skirt steak, the veggie risotto and two pork chops. My steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, however it was very chewy and pretty bland. The frites were excessively salty. The risotto was dry, undercooked and flavorless. The only truly great item was the pork chop, served with figs and pearl onions. Tasty

I have a lot more to say but I’m out of characters. Cmon Open Tabl

We had reservations for my husbands birthday. First we were seated in the bar which was incredibly loud and my father who has a hearing aid couldn’t hear a thing, so we got moved to some outdoor seating. They tried to give my 5 year old a high chair when we moved tables to which of course she was incredibly offended. The food was decent, I had higher expectations since we had eaten at Molina when the executive chef was there and it was fantastic. I’ll chalk that up to growing pains and would definitely try it again. However the service sucked. I felt like the waitress was put out by having us as one of her tables. The dishes sat on the table and we had to ask for them to be cleared and to get more water. Overall, I was underwhelmed. I can’t say we won’t try it again, but I may wait a while for them to work out the kinks.

The El Paseo physical space is awesome. Quaint looking dining areas, and lovely outside area for cocktails and post dinner coffee and dessert. Food disappointing. The halibut was dry, and the whole seafood dish lacked moisture - a sauce or even a glug of good olive oil would have been an improvement. Oyster starter very good but expensive. We had the chocolate dessert which was quite underwhelming Betty Crocker style. Will go back for the delightful bar area and cocktails.

My fiance had the 28 day aged rib-eye which was uneatable, all fat or gristle. She could not eat the steak, sent it back ans switched to salmon. I had the Bavette steak frits which was a tough as shoe leather. Our starter was a little gem salad with green goddess dressing andsea salt radishes. The radishes consisted of two tiny slivers and the dressing appeared to be missing. Of great annoyance was friends of ours ordered a chocolate cake desert for us and which the restaurant described as being their gift and did not mention the real giver. Yes the ambiance is wonderful, but that is it. One of the worst meals I have had in many years

I love This place, I have been here many many times, but I will say, while I had a good experience, this was the worst experience i've had there. There is a new chef and he is still learning his had at salt. WAY over done, and has a "Fresh Ingredients' thing.. ya ya ya.. who doesn't.. Farm to table.. sure sure. EVERY ONE says that.. But the menu is not as creative as it's been in past years. I'll say the food was still "Good" just was not at all special. 100% will go back, just hope the new guy gets his sea legs under him. AND.. it could use a little cleaning on the patio.. The people next to moved there table do to a smell, and well.. it was not what I'd come to expect from Tyler and that place.. Again, I'll go back.. just being honest..

This being my anniversary dinner it was especially disappointing. First turn-off was the music too loud and rather annoying. Next our server was obviously multi tasking and acting rushed forfeiting the idea of giving us a degree of personalized attention. our bottle of wine took forever to be delivered as we noticed the server being held up in conversations with other customers - our bottle of wine in hand. The interaction with our server lacked warmth and courtesy.

We selected El Paseo for our 27th anniversary dinner...it was supposed to be the most romantic restaurant in Marin. The ambience is lovely, the service good and the food was good too. Why only two stars? Because of a very noisy table in the same small back dining room, that absolutely ruined our experience. The threesome started out loud and then, proceeded to end up shouting and laughing so loud--3 bottles of wine into it--that people in the outside bar area 20 feet beyond them turned to see what was happening. We said something to our waitperson and she shrugged off our concern. Now, if I'm at a brewpub and it's a lively, noisy atmosphere, I'm into it. But when you are seeking a quiet, romantic place and paying around $100/person, I expect a bit more from the management to quiet such a disturbing party. I know there are some limits as to what a server or manager can do, but surely it wouldn't have killed her to go over, let them know other people were disturbed by their noise and asked to quiet their level. Normally, I don't mind saying something myself, but with all the f-bombs and sexist things being said loudly, I didn't feel safe to do so. This was something the management should have taken care of.

I have loved this restaurant since first going in the 60's. Sometimes the menu is great and sometimes not so great, especially for those who don't eat meat. Last Tuesday I didn't really like the menu very much. However, the food was good and I would always recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially if you have out of town guests. It is unique and so "Mill Valley". Please don't change it and don't let it go away.
