About El Paseo
Originally built in the mid-1940s, the history of the Bay Area is woven deeply into the construction of El Paseo. The bricks walling in the quaint warren of rooms were reclaimed from landfill from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the thick beams, supporting many of the ceilings, were rail ties from the gravity trains used to bring visitors up Mount Tamalpais’ East Peak at the turn of the last century. Designed by noted architect Gus Costigan, who sketched his designs while serving in WWII, El Paseo is a soulful and authentic example of the California Mission-Style. With this incredible history in mind and a near life-long tradition of celebratory family meals spent at El Paseo (birthdays, Mother’s Days, recording contracts… you get the idea) Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar financed the meticulous two-year restoration of the property; a restoration which has enhanced El Paseo’s warmth and accentuated its timeless appeal.

Ordered the duck breast entree and it arrived totally unccoked, red in the Center. What I tried was chewy and had no flavor. I returned it to have it suficiently cooked and 5 minutes later
the duck was slightly more cooked but one of the least appetizing duck entrees I have ever ordered. The waitress asked if I would like another entree instead and I chose the Crab, which was very tasty, however the fries were lying on the same plate as the crab and were totally soggy from the crab juice. My wife’s cod entree was quite small and uninspiring. The new celebrity chef was missing in action. The $14 glass of Pinot Noir was thin and uninspiring. For the price paid, there are much better places to dine in Marin.
This was my fifth time to dine at L Paseo in the past it has been fantastic. This time looking back there were several red flags that we overlooked. There’s no longer a menu there’s a one piece sheet of paper with some entrées on it. There was one meat selection a ribeye not like there was before three or four different steaks or chops to choose from. This ribeye at $52 came with new potatoes and leeks with a layer of cheese melted over the steak the smell was somewhat overpowering. My steak was good, it was not wonderful it was good. But very little selection now it’s a little pricey. it’s a shame Sammy Hagar had a beautiful restaurant there in the past
It was cool outside and we were sat in a small cozy room with a fireplace. Great service. Dinner menu had only 5 entrees and seemed limited. Two people ordered the cod, and it was overcooked. I had the Sugar Pumpkin Bolognese, good, not memrable. Would go again for the ambiance and location.
Many favorite food items disappearing from the menu, now the tartare is gone, too. Our server didn’t ask us how our meal was nor did he even speak when filling up our last glass of wine. I was disappointed, but will give them another try. Everyone has an off night.
We’re frequent fliers at El Paseo. We had a 7:30 reservation and were not seated until 8:15. Our server was just ok, not very engaging. A large and very loud party was seated near us during our dinner. It was difficult to hear ourselves speak & our server became preoccupied with this table. It took a long time to order dessert.
El Paseo's new chef Todd Shoberg is one of the most innovative chefs in the Bay Area and we are lucky to have him at one of our most beautiful restaurants. I've loved his cooking at 2 of his previous restaurants, Piatti and Molina. Todd honors the fresh local ingredients in every dish, and elevates them to star billing--always creating simple yet memorable dishes. Every bite is full of flavor. The avocado toast is an example of that--it's simple, yet the addition of the smoked trout made it uniquely delicious. My black cod was in an Asian style coconut broth--but the fish was not immersed in the broth so it stayed tender and kept it's own flavor. The pork chop and rib-eye were also cooked to perfection. Todd's skilled preparation of meat is only one of his many gifts because vegetables play such an important role in every dish. I just can't praise Todd's cooking enough.
We ate there for the first time about 2 years ago and it was amazing! We were very disappointed this time. Menu seemed a lot smaller, service was good, best thing is still the ambiance. Brussels sprouts were pretty good, probably the best thing we ordered. Although not sure it needed the persimmons...pomegranates and Pork Belly were probably enough going on. I had the Dungeness crab. None of it was pre-cracked and it came with half a crab over French fries and a lemon. Not a ton of favor or Crab. My husband ordered the steak and it was the biggest disappointment. It was $52 and covered with a partially melted slice of cheese, served with a few potatoes. Steak would have probably been decent without the cheese, it was cooked perfectly. Not sure we’ll go back, especially for the price. Sad because the ambiance is so cozy and it has so much character.
Except for the warm greeting, we were disappointed. Last year, we had a great experience. Delicious traditional Thanksgiving meal for $39 in 2016. This year, they upped the price $26 to $65. Kind of outrageous. The portions were small with adequate taste. The stuffing was tasteless and only 2 teaspoons much like the gravy. The carrots were totally out of place. I hate cooked carrots. No bread was even served. The service was poor. When she asked us our drinks, she argued with me about a particular type of liquor when it was right on the menu. I had to show her the menu. She didn't inform us ever that the pumpkin cheesecake had run out and served us apple tart without even telling us. I found out by taking a bite. My husband who usually leaves a 20% tip only left 15%. Very disappointing.
So disappointed that El Paseo no longer serves popovers. No bread whatsoever was available. Every dish was oversalted. People who didn't want turkey could not enjoy any other Thanksgiving dishes. Prior experiences have been extraordinary, which made this meal all the more disappointing.
visited El Paseo before booking for Thanksgiving. As an individual meal El Paseo was good. Black Cod was missing something however double cut pork chop was good. The avacada toast with trout appetizer was excellent
Thanksgiving on the other hand was unremarkable and at $65 per person prix fixe vastly overpriced. Dark meat turkey was chewy and the deconstructed pumpkin creamcheese dessert was terrible. $500+ and only 3 glasses of wine for a party of 5.
I am sure there are better meals to be had at El Paseo however ours was unremarkable
Sorry Sammy. A fail. Been coming here 20 years. Worst meal on a special occasion. Bad cuts of meat, limited menu, boring starters and way too expensive. Criminal. Half empty restaurant should have been a clue to bolt. The four of us agreed it felt that no one cared. Good luck. Hope you make it another year. End of what was a good thing.
The bivette steak portion was small. At $35.00 I went away hungry. the seasonal
salade with green goddess was generous portion and tasty.
My son substituted salad for the fries with his and we were charged $8.00 without being
told we would incur an extra cost. When brought to the attention of the server, she did not
apologize only stated it was p\"policy"

I'd go again. Service was overall good, food hot, good drinks but I probably would not order a big steak, pot de crème or sit at the same table because of a few gripes: medium rare steak arrived rare/uncooked inside...not unusual but waiter did not check until I ate what I could and took balance home. A sauce would help because the steaks alone are a little dry and a square of swiss style cheese semi melted on top is not for me. Serrated steak knife was large, dull and made for sawing not cutting...no excuse for a steakhouse. No tablecloth/covering for wooden planked tables in south of restaurant and difficult to read menu because of inadequate lighting. Pot de crème, the ultimate dessert, was just okay.
We enjoyed our appetizers and dinners very much. The steak tartare had watercress accompanying it which was nice and tangy. We both ordered halibut as the main course and both of us thought it was great. Seared on the outside but still moist and tender throughout.
There were nicely prepared vegetables served underneath and alongside that were both flavorful and a good compliment to the fish. The pot de creme was heavenly. Service was attentive and not overbearing. We'll be back.
This is the first time I've ever left a negative review on OpenTable. I would love to support our local restaurant. Service was pretty good and the ambiance is delightful, but the food was very mediocre. Our halibut was very overcooked and basically inedible. My cocktail was tasteless.
We are locals who had not been to this restaurant for some time as it went through several ownerships and menu styles. It seemed like it was time to give it a try. Unfortunately, the splendid ambiance couldn't make up for the disappointing preparation of the entrées which were overcooked and tasteless. It's a beautiful spot. We hope that they can get their act together.
Cozy, romantic spot with food that strikes a perfect balance between inventive and comfort food.
The chef is relatively new. The atmosphere has always been wonderful - a number of different, small rooms, which keeps it intimate. Now the food has taken a leap into more interesting styles and flavors, but without sacrificing the basics.
We went there for my birthday. My sister was in town and wanted to try it out. We all felt it was lackluster. One might like the darkness of the restaurant but we needed to use the lights on our phones to read the menu. The table setting was bare of anything to warm it up. My husbands fish was devoid of flavor and the onions were tough. My sister and I had the Bolognese and I think the chef tried to put a spin on it with pomegranate seeds but really a good pasta dish doesn't need that on it. Also no bread on table nothing. Just a very Boring experience all around. Well say the waitress was very nice and her service was great.
The rating is largely based on the price vs value. El Paseo for it's scant menu selections and the list item prices, would not impress anyone I'd send there.
We had an 8pm seating. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived on time, however, the host was apologetic about it and guided us to the bar. The server then came to us twice while we were waiting for our table @ the bar, to apologize for having us wait for our table, and subsequently to bring us to our table 15 minutes later. He was very polite about it, so extra points for that.
The food certainly didn't meet expectations. I can't say much more than that to describe it. I absolutely love a hearty bolognese, and this simply wasn't it. Flavorless. I would have been more lenient on my rating but since the options are so limited (8 items), it is fair to expect that each dish would be above satisfactory (4-5 star). My wife order the pan roasted duck. She was a bit more disappointed than I was.
We no longer eat out as much as we used to (pre-children), and when we go out again, El Paseo will sadly not be on our list of considerations.
Advice: if you're going to serve a select menu, absolutely nail *every* item.
The smoked trout avocado toast is delicious and very filling for an appetizer. Salad with green goddess dressing very bland. Love the European atmosphere. Even though staff was told there was a birthday at the table, no acknowledgement was made.
