About El Parador

El Parador Café was founded in 1959; it is the oldest and most authentic Mexican restaurant in New York, celebrating its 50th year in business. Carlos Jacott launched the original establishment, first located on 2nd Avenue and 31st Street. The restaurant has been lauded for having the best Margaritas by The New York Press and the best Ceviche by The New York Times.

The torch has now been passed onto Jose "Alex" Alejandro, a 1994 graduate of The French Culinary Institute, who continues to grow the restaurant’s following by offering an excellent menu, world class bar & lounge and warm atmosphere.

El Parador is dedicated to culture and hospitality. Many of the customers, dubbed “El Paradorians,” first met each other at the restaurant.

The wonderful ambiance and cuisine has made El Parador Cafe NYC's favorite Mexican Restaurant, voted #1 by Open table and, once again, named a Bib Gourmand winner by the Michelin Guide for great value.

Loved this restaurant! Had the taco platter which was the best thing ever as well as the strawberry margarita. The margaritas were same if the best I’ve had and the food in general was some of the best Mexican food I’ve had. The food also didn’t make you feel gross or gassy like some restaurants. I would totally return. Great place for a date or for meeting a friend.

El Parador never fails to impress. Every time I come to NYC, I call and RESERVE their fabulous chicken mole. It truly is worth the trip.

All excellent except our round table was in the center of a heavily trafficked area so that wait staff were constantly brushing my back and accidentally kicking my chair

It is a good day when I get to go to a great movie at Kips Bay and join my family and friends at El Parador. Have been going to this gem since I was in college back in the 1990s. It is a wonderful place that has stayed the same which is good as it is perfect.

One of the best meals I have had recently in New York. The atmosphere was enjoyable with the eclectic furnishings. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding from the salsa and chips to the Pollo Parador. Highly recommend.

It was so so. Hadn’t been there in a while and it wasn’t what I remember. The food wasn’t hot except for the fajitas which didn’t have enough onion and peppers.

I went with two enthusiastic people from the neighborhood. The food was excellent, service very careful and caring, drinks good, and no trouble conversing with my friends.

The salsa offered on the table was not vegetarian (I've never encountered a salsa that wasn't so I didn't think to ask...very strange), and we were not told that until 10 minutes into the meal when we had already tried it. We asked twice for the vegetarian menu before actually given a menu with vegetarian dishes. I have never had to make a fuss about ingredients, but even after asking specifically and politely what was in the meal, they kept denying there was cheese even though it was clearly visible. They tried to scoop it out at the table, and it was very embarrassing. I don't think they knew that meat broth is not vegetarian or that a little bit of cheese on top is still dairy. This was all especially strange because we were one of three parties there at the time, but it was really difficult to get service. I've never left a review anywhere, but I felt compelled to warn people not go here if you have any dietary restrictions.

We were very surprised when the bill came that 20% charge was included in the bill, as we were 3 people dining. Our waiter (Manuel), when asked, said that was customary for the restaurant. We were not too happy about it, because the person who was paying was about to add a 20% tip. On our way out, we stopped to ask other customers who had received their bill as well, and were very surprised to see there was no service charge added to their bill (they were 4). So, because we were speaking French over dinner, the waiter either thought to take advantage and get a double tip, or was afraid we would not tip and wanted to make sure we did. In any case, they lied to our face, and we will not be going back, even though we live 2 blocks away and have been regular customers.

Food was very good; drinks were great as well - happy hour at the bar up till 7PM... interesting twist on the food itself, NOT your standard Mexican fare. Worth going and trying it!!. Only downside was that due to it being busy the wait staff was not as attentive as they could be; we continuously had to ask for someone passing by to send the waiter over if we wanted more drinks or needed anything. No one came over either during the meal to ask how the food was or if we needed anything so we spent a lot of time seeking someone out during the entire duration of being there. Its rare to find a Mexican restaurant where the noise isnt so bad that you can have conversation and that was a really nice fact about this place too... no shouting needed during the rush! highly recommend.

wonderful old school Mexican food in classic restaurant. Good quiet Mexicano music, we could actually talk and hear each other without shouting.

I've been coming here since 1972 and have never been disappointed - until now.All four entrees were overcooked. Their formerly wonderful Margaritas our now made with lemon juice(not lime) and were mediocre at best. The only part of the experience reminiscent of past was the quality and friendliness of the wait staff.
