El Chorro Ratings and Reviews
When we arrived, several large parties were waiting to be seated AND 2 groups were hosting events. I figured we were in for a poor service / cold food night.
Not so! The was wait staff was plentiful. The food arrived from the kitchen in a timely manner and the food temperatures were great. Hots were hot and cold were cold.
job well done!
Whenever we are in Phoenix we try to eat at El Choro so we've been going there for almost 40 years. Lots has changed in that time. As always our food was excellent and service attentive. We did opt to eat inside and were placed at a table that was probably the least lit in the entire restaurant. Fortunately we had the flashlight in our phone so we could read the menu. My only complaint has to do with the sticky buns. The bread basket contained 2 small buns and when our waitress cleared the empty basket she did not offer additional buns. When we first started going to El Choro, the bread basket was brimming with sticky buns and regular bread and they served a relish tray. Nothing stays the same, and we will be back on our next visit.
My husband and I dined here on a date night. The restaurant offers an old time menu in a fun inside setting. (It was too chilly for the patio that night). His Salmon and my Trout Amandine were amazing. The service was quick and friendly. It was noisy given
how close it was to Christmas, but we could still hear one another. We will be back.
What happened to El Chorro?
We have been dining here for decades and frequently attend their special events: (Wine dinners, wine tastings, cocktail classes, and brunches) We attended the wine tasting on December 5 and decided to stay for dinner. The patio was not crowded, only 6 tables were full. When one orders drinks at El Chorro a bread basket usually arrives with rolls, fresh bread and their famous sticky buns. Tonight, none were offered, and none arrived. We ordered items from the house specialties; the brazed short rib and the beef stroganoff. We ordered bread with the meal. We were served stale and dry sourdough with crust that scraped the roof of my mouth. The short rib was very tender but was completely devoid of seasoning and flavor. It was so bland that adding table salt and pepper did little for the taste. The stroganoff, by comparison was very flavorful, but the meat was terribly inconsistent. About 1/3 of the portion was tender and delicious. The remaining portion was full of gristle and completely inedible. When the pile of inedible pieces of meat were pushed to the side of the plate and left. For desert, we ordered the pie of the day (apple). It arrived at room temperature, I should have requested it be warmed up. The crust was very flakey, and the accompanying ice cream was delicious. Since we had not had any sticky buns, we ordered a half dozen to take home. Big mistake, the sticky buns were minuscule. (about ½ the size they usually are) Additionally, two of the buns were dried out, rock hard, and inedible. This was by far the worst dining experience we have ever had at El Chorro. If this had been our first experience, we would not be coming back.
We celebrated our son’s 22nd birthday under the supermoon next to a lovely fireplace. Of course it’s always fun to start a meal here with those yummy, gooey, sweet sticky buns, although they should finish with them as a dessert. I had the blue crab, ahi tuna & avocado stack with an orange reduction garnish for entree which was perfect in portion for me. The crab was tasty, however, there weren’t many distinguishable chunks. Tuna was excellent. Bday boy’s tequila jumbo shrimp were indeed enormous as advertised and delicious. Other entrees were standard fare-braised beef short ribs and a roasted pork loin. Lovely little white chocolate pyramid bday dessert with candle topped off a very nice dinner.
The food at El Chorro was outstanding, and the views from the outdoor patio were perfect for a Sunday brunch on a beautiful afternoon. The price point was very appropriate for the ambiance, location and food quality, making this a place that is very accessible for any Sunday brunch. El Chorro has been around for a long time for a reason - and that is very obviously because the experience is outstanding. This restaurant will absolutely find it's way into our regular rotation.
We've been coming here for years and years and years.....we're done! 6 orders of eggs benedict, all 6 ice cold including the potatoes. One of the plates the eggs were softer than soft boiled, crazy that this should happen on a Sunday morning when it wasn't overly crowded. El Chorro you are better than that. Yes they brought the table hot potatoes, yes two eggs were replaced, and they took one off the bill....c'mon
Memorable meal, beautiful ambiance and amazing server (wish I could recall his name...he was SO personable, efficient, fun and professional)! Our dining experience that evening, start to finish, was pleasurable and satisfying...I am placing it on my top five dining experiences ever! Really.
We had friends in town from the east coast and wanted to share with them some old Arizona charm and good food. El Chorro did not disappoint. When I walked in and saw signs for 3 different company holiday parties, I was scared that service might be slow or not up to par. Well I was worried for nothing. Kayla took excellent care of us! We were not the easiest, as we were doing a lot of catching up and not looking at the menu; thus Kayla had to check in with us a lot. Our guest loved sitting on the patio with the view of Camelback. Our food was delicious. We had a wonderful evening.
Went for Happy hour. Not very happy! Ends at 6 pm. A few appetizers (not the good stuff from the menu and NO mention of sticky buns) and $5 well, beer and wine. Would have liked it to last until at least 6:30 and better choices of spirits. Much better hh's most everywhere else. Julia at the bar was absolutely awesome.
Six of us enjoyed a wonderful experience under the stars...service was excellent...food delightful from the sticky buns, shared chicken liver and shrimp pepper pots appetizers, to the beef stroganoff, sea food pasta, fish special (2 of us had that ...cooked perfectly with a great sauce and preparation) , and red bird chicken. Highly recommended as a special place to take visitors to the Valley of the Sun and the views of Camelback Mt.
Beautiful setting wasted with mediocre food and service. We paid for high quality foods and great service and were extremely disappointed. The waiter neglected to let us know about specials and continually had to be told several times about our needs and the fish was sent back because it was so over cooked it was inedible. The second one they brought was not much better and tasted like a frozen fish patty. None of the meals were of the quality that price should ensure. Have not been there in a long time and will definitely not be back. Too many great restaurants available at that price point.
Great food and great location. Disappointed because it was my birthday and we booked that online and wrote it on the open table app. They even then called to confirm and asked about it being my birthday. I told them yes. They did nothing for us!! Very disappointed. Was supposed to be a special night for my birthday and it wasn't as good as it could have been
The food was terrible.. so disappointing! I loved the old El Charro. The new is nothing like the old. The wonderful huge shrimp cocktails at the old El Charro were a must. We ordered the shrimp cocktail to start . They were skimpy 4 shrimp overcooked and served on a plate , not the old shrimp cocktail glasses. The famous sticky buns are not the same either. They were much smaller and dry. All in all we all decided we would not be back. Im local. It seems now like a tourist place and thats it.
Ambiance awesome and Manager was lovely. We had a baby with us in a car seat and had to ask 3 times for a high chair, busser seemed bothered that we were asking and finally our waiter brought it out, he was great. Same busser seemed bothered that we asked for water refill as well. Other than that we enjoyed it.
I love this restaurant and was so disappointed that they can't figure out how to cook an egg. This is the 3rd time in a row we have gone for brunch and the eggs are not fully cooked. So this time I mentioned it was the third time with runny eggs. They brought the eggs benedict out and the eggs were like hard boiled. They brought my eggs out twice and both times were under cooked even though I requested over medium.
I've dined here for both dinner and brunch. perfect place to entertain and get a flavor of an Arizona setting with it's beautiful outdoor patio. I had an out of town guest and before they left, I thought to make an Open Table Brunch 9:15 reservation for a party of 4. Early because my guest had a flight to catch, but I have to say it was really nice, the brunch crowd wasn't there yet so it was very peaceful and very enjoyable. The service was excellent.
Of course we had classic brunch cocktails: Bloody Marys as we munched on their delectable Cinnamon Buns and assorted pastries while looking over the menu. Entrees ordered: Banana Pancakes (toasted macadamia Nutella fondue sauce), 3 Sausage Omelette, Green Chilli Pork Stew, and Best of Both Worlds Egg Benedict (one benedict of each. Jumbo lump blue crab cake, tomato salsa hollandaise, petite filet, béarnaise sauce)
All the dishes were hot, fresh, and tasted wonderful. My out of town guest had the Eggs Benedict which looked absolutely amazing and he said it tasted fantastic.
Arizona Landmark with excellent service, Food: very good... just a great place for an early brunch!
We were highly disappointed to arrive for our "Reservation" for 4 at Happy Hour, which is a choice on your site by the way, which included my 90 year Mother and be told that they WOULD NOT HONOR OUR RESERVATION. We had heard so many good things about this place, so of course we were upset. No apologies from the staff were forthcoming. They did not care. All of the tables outside were empty, it was only 5pm. We stated we would be in and out before their dinner crowd arrived, but they did not care. When I said well, I guess we will have to find some other place for my Mother's Birthday the Hostess just smiled and said nothing. She did not care. I am still fuming. I will never go there again. There are so many choices in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area to choose from that have friendly, accommodating staff, I would never recommend this place to anyone as their staff just doesn't care.
